A Detroit Coney Island restaurant worker is being hailed as a hero after he turned the tables on an armed robber last weekend, fatally shooting the man in order to protect the patrons.

It was an average Sunday morning at Pete’s Grill when a man stormed through the front doors, brandishing a gun at the customers and workers. The robber wanted the money in the register, but as he was busy shouting orders, one of the workers was busy arming up.

“Next thing I know, I saw everybody getting down on the ground,” said Robert Felton, who was inside the restaurant when the shooting occurred. “This guy was robbing the place. He had the gun on everybody. He was telling everybody, ‘get to the register, I want the register.’”

That’s when the unidentified worker leapt into action.

“Next thing I know, I hear a bunch of gunshots,” said Felton.

The worker shot the suspect and Detroit police said he was dead when they arrived on the scene. The worker has not yet been cleared of the shooting, but the general feeling is that it was an act of self-defense.

“When you are being threatened with a weapon and you face a split second decision, you make your decision based on the information you have in front of you at the moment,” said Sgt. Cassandra Lewis of the Detroit Police Department.

While those who witnessed the robbery may have been a bit shaken up, many of them acknowledge that the worker is a hero.

“The guy that worked here is a hero, man,” said Felton. “He’s really a hero.”
