Overview

Kimber broke some new ground last year with the introduction of their K6s revolver line. This year featured some new additions to that line, sure to make them a major player in the wheel gun market.

We had a chance to go hands-on with some new Kimber K6S revolvers at Range Day during SHOT Show 2017.

Impression

The K6S is billed as the world’s lightest production six-shot .357 Magnum, with an empty weight of 23 ounces. The cylinder is incredibly slim for such a serious cartidge, but the gun shoots quite smoothly. I had to double check to be sure they didn’t fill my cylinder with .38 Special instead of magnums. At the range at SHOT, I had the chance to see the Stainless model, Stainless with Crimson Trace laser grip and the DCR (Deluxe Carry Revolver).

I had a chance to shoot the one with the Crimson Trace laser, and this is a must-have option for me on small-size revolvers. The sights on the K6s aren’t as small as some pocket revolvers, but I still found the laser faster and easier to pick up. The DCR looks like a refined gentleman’s gun to me, but they let me shoot it anyway. Rosewood grips wrap the frame, checkered in a beautiful pattern. This model also features a fiber optic front sight, which was quite a nice addition.

The author ran some cylinders of ammo through the K6S and was pleasantly surprised at the lack of perceived recoil with magnum loads.

I admire the looks, the slim concept, the 6 shots, and the workmanship of a K6S 2 incher I shot 2 years ago, and it functioned perfectly with .38, +p, and Magnum loads, but damn if it didn’t kick like the living hell. The grip/frame at the top where it contacts your hand’s web is way too thin and lacks cushioning that is badly needed, so when it slams into your hand it is EXTREMELY painful , especially with .38 +p and .357 loads. Curiously, my Taurus M85 with their excellent ribbed soft rubber stocks was exactly the opposite- comfy and cushy with even the stout +p 38 loads; a pleasure to shoot. The M85 cost one third the price of the Kimber, and after having owned and shot scores of cheap and expensive revolvers over the last 50 years, the Taurus M85 and my Taurus M27, both with ribbed soft rubber stocks, shoot the friggin PANTS off this Kimber and some of my other pricey revolvers.

Nothing like being paid to leave an honest review. In magnum loads it kicks like a MULE.
Then there’s the problem of Kimber quality control. I hope they get this right. I’m the owner of 3 Kimber’s. 2 are unreliable and 1 has had multiple trips back to the factory. My Solo looks nice but that’s all.
For some strange reason I’m attracted to this revolver. I won’t be doing any impulse purchase. Only time will tell.

Love Kimber’s guns. How about a K6 action in 5 or 6 inch barrel with adjustable sights and maybe little fuller grip frame. Call it the K6 Target. I’d buy it.

So would I! How about a 4 inch barrel? It would fit nicely in my carry concealed purse. I am 78 years old and 4’10” tall but I can still shoot a good gun!!!
