Overview

One of the other patterns we saw at SHOT Show 2017 was that of PCC (or “pistol caliber carbines). These have really taken off over the last year, for both home defense shooters and competitors. The adoption of a pistol caliber carbine division of USPSA sport shooting has been a driving force in this market, and it looks like it is here to stay. This year, Rock River Arms introduced a carbine built exactly for this.

The R9 Competition 9mm from Rock River Arms delivers home defense and competition-ready performance.

Specs

  • Chambering: 9mm

  • MSRP: $1,565

Impression

The R9 Competition carbine is chambered in 9mm, as are most current PCC. .40 S&W is next on the block for production, though we weren’t told when that is expected. This model is built to run on Colt Commando pattern magazines, which is handy if you have been in the 9mm AR game for a while. A 16-inch barrel means no stamps necessary on this new offering, and the barrel itself has a very unique “chain link” fluting system. It looks pretty cool on the stainless barrel, and helps reduce the weight on the system. The gun is very lightweight, which is a nice feature on a PCC. I don’t think any of us are concerned about 200m groups with 9mm, but weight is absolutely an issue in this class of weapon.

The carbine’s barrel has very distinctive fluting for added visual flair.

Price and Availability

The R9 Competition Carbine is priced at $1,565 and should be available on the market soon. If you need a home defense or PCC, this is a great option.

What a waste of time for RR, first of all why bring it out using Colt mags? I bought my 9mmPCC over a year ago from PSA for under $600.00 and it uses Glock mags which compliments my G 35 with a 9mm BBL in it. RR is trying to build a better mouse trap and PSA did it over a year ago.
For me, I wanted a PCC and handgun that used the same mags, I got that, plus the PSA will take all glock 9mm mags except the 26 style. I also have a 50 round drum that just smokes!
And I should add that I shot it in a 3 gun and two USPSA matches and had a ball pluse I’ve shot the hell out of it as have friends and not one hiccup of any kind.
So for a bit more you can buy 3 PSA for the cost of a RR and use a much better magazine.

I just wish they made it in something BIGGER than 9mm (like .44mag?).

Does this rifle use a dedicated Colt 9mm style lower or a magazine block?

At 00:56 to 01:02 on the video it shows a good angle of the lower receiver bottom. Looks like a dedicated (Colt style) 9mm lower to me.
