Savage .17 Winchester Super Magnum Rimfire Rifle – SHOT Show 2013

Authors SHOT Show 2013

Savage Arms
https://www.savagearms.com/

This is a groundbreaking new rifle from Savage made for the new .17 Super Magnum **RIMFIRE**. You may not have heard of this cartridge yet, but it shoots a 20 grain bullet at about 3,000 feet per second, at .17 caliber of course. This means fairly flat shooting at devastating velocities out to 300 yards and beyond. What makes this particular gun special is that it is from Savage, the leader in out of the box accuracy in bolt guns. They have incorporated several centerfire bolt gun features into this rimfire rifle, at a rimfire price of $349. As ammunition gets more and more expensive, that you can go shoot prairie dogs, crows or even tin cans all day at 300 yards on the cheap may make this the biggest story of SHOT Show 2013. Bill is correct here in the video when he says that Savage won’t be able to make enough of these guns. If you are a new gun owner and you bought a pistol or an AR first, this would be your ideal second gun that you will never outgrow and that you will still enjoy shooting in 30 years, with your grandchildren. Another great rifle idea from Savage. Get yourself on the list with your local dealer, because supply may not catch up with the demand in 2013.

John…nothing personal but have YOU asked ???? Little back woods PHX, AZ…..out of 8 stores I called no one has seen either ammo or rifle…..might be nice if you ask the mfg’s where the mysterious guns are…..I even called Davidson’s….a little wholesaler….if you buy over a million a year you “might” get one…

  • John McClaren July 30, 2013, 2:04 pm

Where can I purchase one at a reasonable price?

    • Administrator July 30, 2013, 7:40 pm

Ask your local gun dealer to order you one. Some of the dealers and big box stores actually do have them.

  • Ben July 29, 2013, 5:21 am

    • Administrator July 14, 2013, 2:18 pm

The rifle is officially out. We have one. Ask your gun dealer to see if his distributors have it. Midway is saying an August ETA on the ammo right now.

  • christian July 11, 2013, 5:03 pm

So if you have the rifle the 17 WSM can I buy the rifle and then wait on till the ammo is available to buy. And when do you think the ammo will be available would it be a few months or?

Where is the rifle? Where are the shells? Promises, promises, promises. It was suppose to be on the racks in April, then May, and now it’s June and still it’s a no show……………WHERES THE BEEF?

  • c.j. June 6, 2013, 4:37 am

My mom and my stepdad work at winchester and have a good amount of power in the facility so i can get a great discount on the rounds and hopefully on the rifle. If i get this gun it’ll be about my 27th gun:)

  • j bodnar May 6, 2013, 7:11 pm

I live in mt. and i have a lot of places to shoot than at a shooting range, for nothing.I’m a winter texan and if i want to shoot my firearms I have to go to ashooting range and pay $15.00,thats why i shoot skeet there. Texans are tight with their land and you have to know somebody there if you want to shoot. They feed the deer there and shooting a deer is as easy as feeding them. Pigs are everywhere-no challenge Hunting qual and ducks is expensive.I,ll take mt. We are more free here. By the way, I just moved here from mn. 2 years ago.

  • Josh April 3, 2013, 2:21 pm

I can reload 223 with ballistic tips for $12 per 50 and thats not even the cheap FMJ stuff.

  • Joe April 2, 2013, 12:38 am

Just to add a suggestion, comment was made above
That 17 super mag was to be $16 per box
And 223 could be reloaded cheaper?
The rimfire comes 50 rds per box at $16.
Can 223 be reloaded for less, primers, bullets and powder?
    Curious?

    • Bart July 24, 2013, 5:31 pm

If you factor in the reuse of 223 brass (figure it can be used 6 times), at current cost I can reload 223 for 8-10 cents a round.

  • meghin March 21, 2013, 9:32 pm

How do you put your self on the list?

  • alexschwetz March 2, 2013, 7:16 pm

lets not forget the 204 ruger, its between the223 and the all the 17’s.but they all have a purpose or is it a place in our heart.204 flat and carries better then all the 17’s.

  • Rick LaFountain February 12, 2013, 1:57 pm

keep me posted on availability of the new rifle, i want one thank you

  • Casey February 4, 2013, 8:31 pm

Wow!!!!!!!!! No narrow minded folks here.

Here’s what I’ve found out so far: I’m not advertising for them either.

    1) It has about 185 ft/lbs of energy at 200 yards, a 17hmr has 70 ft/lbs
    2) Wind drift at 200 yds in a 10mph 90deg crosswind is as follows:
    17hmr 16″
    22mag 24.2″
    17wsm 7.8″
    3)Trajectory: (50yd +.25″) (100yd +.83″) (150 yd 0″) (200yd -2.6″) (250yd -7.2″)

The negative: Midway is supposed to have these shells in stock soon and I think they were around $16/box.
any of us that reload can do 223’s for less than that. So, I probably won’t rush out and buy one
unless they get a whole lot cheaper.

All that being said, it would be lots of fun to shoot and a whole lot quieter than the centerfire.
    Hope this info helps someone.

    Happy Shootin’

    • Bill April 25, 2013, 11:34 am

yeah, narrow minded all over the place & glass half empty…….glad to have another piece to pick from in these anti-gun days…….can’t make some people happy at all…..ME…I want one!!!!!!!

  • Ryan February 1, 2013, 10:13 pm

I don’t understand all the hype. A 3000 fps rimfire is novel but it is not a huge improvement over the HMR. The claim that it will be a legitimate 300 yard varmint gun seems a little far fetched since it is still a tiny bullet that will get blown around by even the slightest wind. My 17 HMR is my current truck gun for varmint control on my ranch and while its great for rabbits and squirrels the only way to reliably take down a coyote is with a head shot and I imagine it will be the same story with this. If they had introduced a .20 WSMR with a 32 grain vmax at 2200+ fps I would be first in line but I think I’ll pass on the latest and greatest this time.

  • Walter January 29, 2013, 7:43 am

Hi I hope Savage will make one with a 7 round mag for us poor soles behind the iron curtain in NY.

    • Paul February 23, 2014, 3:21 pm

      AMEN Walter

  • Boots January 20, 2013, 9:03 am

3000 fps. How is that better than the .223 at 3240 fps with a 55 grain bullet? 33000 psi. Again. The rifle will take almost 100,000 psi. Why not make a case that will handle more pressure than try to minaturize the bullet? Will 4 to 5 thousand fps shoot flatter and have less wind problems with a heavier bullet make more sense? Barrels? I see more people changing uppers and replacing barrels than ever before, and I never had or heard of a local owned gun that shot 50,000 rounds and had to replace the barrel yet.

    • Administrator January 20, 2013, 12:10 pm

Many of the comments here miss the point that this is a rimfire rifle. The ammunition cost is roughly 1 third to 1 half for high quality ammunition. You can shoot prairie dogs all day for 50 bucks.

      • Bill April 25, 2013, 11:30 am

Finally some one who gets the point…….looking forward to this rifle and round 🙂

        • kim June 19, 2013, 3:23 pm

I like the17hmr because it’s fairly safe to shoot things out of trees, when the bullet descends it loses energy fast. Put me first on the list for a left hand model.

  • Robert7 January 20, 2013, 12:07 am

i can shot left with right side bolt so can my kids

  • Eric Mayer January 19, 2013, 10:35 pm

I shot this at the Media Day and did a full write-up on my site. To answer a couple of questions. It is a completely new round and NOT the .17 HMR. I do not think it will be available in the left-hand version just yet. However, Savage stated that they are looking to use this same platform for other rimfire cartridges, so it may be available in the future. Volquartsen told me that they are looking to build one of their rifles to handle this round as well. I also have a full picture gallery on the Savage B.MAG from the show. It is a neat little rifle!

  • common sence January 19, 2013, 7:18 pm

I THINK THAT A 17 HORNET WILL DO EVERY THING BETTER, HEAVER BULLET AND FASTER SPEED AND IF YOU RELOAD THE COST PER ROUND WILL BE VERY CLOSE.. HOWEVER IF YOU DO NOT RELOAD THIS COMBO COULD BE A LOT OF FUN THE DOLLAR…

  • jim mcdaniel January 18, 2013, 9:13 pm

if you want a semi auto in 17hmr go to volguartsen they are available there and the shoot great mine will do half inch 100yrds all day long.

  • Fred January 18, 2013, 9:09 pm

I love target shooting, It is great for steadying the mind and hand. shoot clays with a .45acp and enjoy the fun.

  • Fred January 18, 2013, 9:05 pm

learn to shoot from either side. U don’t alwayd get a chance to change.

    • jp May 5, 2013, 12:23 pm

some dont have that luxury, im blind in my right eye.

  • Jeff January 18, 2013, 8:52 pm

    @ Mark Owen
Agreed which is why I had Mike Mille bulid me uppers for my AR’s. Have two uppers in 17 remington and I can tell you they are my “Favorite” rifles, ZERO RECOIL, LASER TRAJECTORY, and WITNESS EVERY HIT. Realize I am talking centerfire, and thread is predominately rimfire, but if they aren’t going to make a semi-auto have one built.

  • charlie January 18, 2013, 6:20 pm

Sounds good, but I would of liked it more in a 20 caliber like the 5MM Remington with more punch.

  • Mark Owen January 18, 2013, 6:14 pm

I would love to have one of these .17 rifles, but it must be in semi-auto, with all the technology out there you can’t seem to come up with a good dependable semi-auto in .17 ?

    • Djcope February 6, 2013, 9:15 pm

Alexander arms makes a 17HMR upper for the AR.

    • LST June 28, 2015, 8:01 pm

      See Franklin Arms

  • Jeffrey January 18, 2013, 5:30 pm

Do the make a lefthand version?

  • ROBERT JOHNSON January 18, 2013, 5:01 pm

    Attention: W.J. Stewart
The .17 Hornet (by Hornady) is not a rim-fire cartridge. It is a center-fire cartridge. (Same length as the .22 Hornet
center-fire cartridge.) Both gun (Savage Model 25) and ammo are available. The ammo and guns will be one of 2013
    major high-lights. (In my opinion)

    • Wolfsbane November 8, 2013, 2:24 pm

      @Robert Johnson

      Hey dumbass, learn to read.

RJS asked if the cartridge was the same as the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire NOT the .17 Hornet. As in this:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.17_HMR

  • Ron January 18, 2013, 4:55 pm

Can we expect that rifle in a Left-hand version as well as a 22 caliber

    • Jeff January 21, 2013, 1:00 pm

Why are we constantly discriminated against, more left handed guns please!

      • Administrator January 21, 2013, 1:15 pm

Your own minions work against you! Take a look at the comments we got on the Browning left hand X-bolt lefty. Lots of people say they don’t need them.

  • JR January 18, 2013, 4:46 pm

There is nothing about this rifle on your website. When will it be available? I have been looking for a .17 and I think I found what I want.

  • Laurence January 18, 2013, 4:15 pm

How about a 20 cal version and left handed!!

  • Don January 18, 2013, 3:50 pm

    cost and available of ammo?

  • Gabe January 18, 2013, 3:45 pm

First article I had read about it a couple weeks back.

if it takes a majority of states to ratify an amendment to the Constitution and there isn’t a time limit for the states to study it before voting, how can a Governor or President flash a pen and change an existing right of the citizens? this is a travesty and as far as I’m concerned it’s the absolute beginning of the end of our democratic nation. it was great while it lasted and I, for one, have lived long enough to enjoy it. plinking and hunting with my father, then my sons and daughter and now.. or should I say, up until now..with my grandchildren. all 20 of them. I’ve been buying them rifles and land to hunt since 1963 and as far as I can see into the future it’s all been wasted money. I wish I lived in Texas, at least they have the right mindset!

    • JOHN HOGAN January 18, 2013, 6:56 pm

      Hello John

I can sense your frustration and your right. One man decides your fate up there??????????????? You have to question that for sure.
I have been in Law Enforcement most of my adult life (Topeka Kansas Police Department) and lived on a small 40 acre farm outside of Topeka, always shooting and loading. Since retirement I looked around for a place that didn’t have snow to shovel. I found a wonderful community in Mission, Texas.
You have to love, as I do the TEXAS way of life and how they treat the Texans that love their guns…. Our Attorney General just the last few days has extended and invitation for everyone of you foiks that love the AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE to head down this direction and enjoy it…..
Darn shame one or two idiot’s can change your way of life, your children’s and Grandchildren’s. If it all hits the fan this state will be the place to be. I will have the coffee on and you will probably be able to smell the Hoppe’s gun oil when you come in the door. Stay safe and keep your powder dry. John H

    • DDavis January 18, 2013, 7:47 pm

I think it’s great you have enjoyed the time spent with your father and offspring in the sport of hunting and shooting. God be with you and don’t ever give up.

    • Fred January 18, 2013, 9:03 pm

not about to happen. need I say more?

the minutemen were well armed and protected the locals from British taxation.

    • James March 25, 2013, 10:40 am

John, I hear you. I love NY, lived there just over a decade. The Adirondacks are among America’s most beautiful scenery, and the Forever Wild mindset and easy access to public lands is one thing NY got right. However, while it wasn’t the reason for my move, I did get fed up with the constant de-Americanization of NYC/Albany politicians. I lived in the Eastern Europe a while too. Guess where I felt more free?

Now I’m in Texas, and all I can say is, come on down. The water’s fine. And you’ll love the tax decreases, too!

  • Brakeman January 18, 2013, 3:27 pm

    Very cool indeed!
And quite a nice looking rifle I must say…
So when can we expect the 22 caliber version?

  • Anthony January 18, 2013, 2:59 pm

Give Obama and Co. a couple years and the detachable magazine on that bolt action rifle will make it an assault weapon. But being from the free state of Texas, we think such things are just fine. I’m glad to see that firearms companies are still innovating.

    • HuMart July 2, 2013, 7:57 pm

What a dork! Get your facts. Obama has yet to take a gun or ammunition away from anyone. And he isn’t going to. In case you hadn’t heard, laws are passed by Congress and signed – or vetoed – by the President. And if they are vetoed, Congress can override the veto if they can muster enough votes. The elected party that is in majority prevails. That is basically how our democracy works. If the government wants to arm every person in the country over 6 years of age, then it will pass because the people elected the government. If the government wants to take away all firearms from all folks in the country then it will come to pass because it is the government elected by the people.

Gun manufacturers and the NRA would love for you to think otherwise. That is what keeps you flocking to buy all the firearms and ammo you can possibly afford on your credit limit. It keeps you thinking how smart you are when in actuality you are an idiot and it keeps the big bucks going to the gun manufacturers and the NRA.

Keep on buying crap; it is good for the economy too.

      • Dan McMillan July 5, 2013, 7:44 am

Who’s the DORK?. Obama has been doing things he’s can’t do by law all along. First you have to haave a congress willing to stop him dork.

      • endthetyranny July 23, 2013, 11:58 am

Hey HuMart, it’s people like you that cant see past their A55 that got us were we are today, a tyrant President who hates America, it’s people and the Constitution. You stay in your little bubble why others are out fighting the good fight. you speak like a pansy. Lets all guess what HuMart is, a Liberal, a Democrat, a New Englander, an Atheist? MY GUESS ALL OF THE ABOVE. how about you?

      • Dustin September 28, 2013, 10:19 pm

        We’re not a democracy…..

        • Freeman January 12, 2014, 4:47 pm

Thank you Dustin, We are a Representative Republic, as anyone who know the Pledge of Allegiance also knows. And HuMart…I guess you think that resorting to name calling is the way to get your ill-conceived point across?

      • Paul February 23, 2014, 3:17 pm

Come to NY and see what Cuomo has done and will do if he gets to the WH

      • Neal September 29, 2014, 7:04 pm

No Obama plan wasn’t to take guns’ but to not sign the 10 year trade agreement where 80% of the ammo was being imported, he DID stop the import of ammo, and granted Homeland security enough funds 3 times, last known purchase from homeland security was 7 billion in hollow points ammo enough bullets to shoot each American citizen 10 times each, why do they need that much ammo, why is ammo so hard to get, because Obama didn’t take your guns instead made them useless, unless you want to use a riffle as a club and beat someone with it,

      • Trouble March 16, 2015, 3:59 pm

There ia always a know it all but not know a thing liberal in the closet someplace. What in the hell makes you think our current president cares a thing about the constitution of this country. He has a pen and a phone or haven’t you heard it on NBC yet.

    • STEVE C April 14, 2014, 9:49 pm

YOU MUST BE A DUMB-O-CRAT. This is the most ANTI-GUN, ANTI AMERICAN president in the history of our country.
      Get a clue dude!!

  • William J. Stewart January 18, 2013, 2:33 pm

“.17 Winchester Super Magnum Rimfire”? What are the dimensions of this cartridge, it’s pressure limits, and when will it be listed on the SAAMI web site? Or is this actually the registered “.17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire” Cartridge?
    Please give more information.
    Regards,

    • George January 18, 2013, 4:50 pm

Winchester has a “power fastener” division (think nail gun) and the new “.17 Winchester Super Magnum Rimfire” is based on their .27-caliber power fastener cartridge case.
