Has Savage Arms solved the mystery and made us a safe and reliable 17 HMR autoloader? According the Savage, they have.

Savage did extensive testing on the new A-17 to ensure that it functions safely. They also had CCI do some independent testing to ensure that everything is good to go. We have been promised a sample and will be doing our own testing and evaluation in the coming weeks.
So how did they do it? Savage made several changes to their standard auto-loader design to make the A17 more reliable, but the biggest addition on the rifle is a special lug that locks the bolt in place for a millisecond, delaying blowback to allow most of the gases from burning powder to dissipate. The slight delay allows the bolt to cycle reliably.
The A-17 will ship with a 10 round rotary magazine and it is equipped with the Accutrigger. The MSRP is $465 and will ship in March. We’re pretty stoked about the idea. This isn’t you’re average everyday plinker. It really takes the rimfire fun-gun to the next level.

CCI has also developed a special loading of 17 HMR for the A17. This is a slightly hotter load that pushes the speed up to above 2,650 fps. Savage says this was developed to help cycle in extreme cold, or if the rifle is fouled from heavy use.
Savage also showed us a new version of the Mod 11 Scout rifle. It features an adjustable stock (length of pull and comb), 10 round box magazine and the always-great Accutrigger. The Scout has iron sights and a forward section of rail for optics. IT is a familiar concept, but Savage has put their own unique spin on the gun. It looks like it is going to be a solid addition to their line-up.

Savage needs to build a better magazine…plastic or poly internals…what a joke….17 hmr is deadly on prairie dawgs….2 days we got close to 500 with a savage bolt action in .17hmr and a Ruger 10/22. The .17hmr was more accurate and can shoot farther distances. Ruger come out with a .17 hmr in the 10/22 platform with a better magazine.
I bought one of the Alexander Arms Ar style .17 hmr 2 years ago. It has now blown up on me 4 times in the last two years of prarie dog shooting(after about 100 rounds) It set’s off a shell in the chamber and also in the action. Then blows the clip out the bottom of the rifle. Alexander Arms yry’s to tell me that it is designed that way to do that. Then they ask me how tight I hold the rifle to my shoulder.(What the heck.) Then you are only supposed to use Hornady Ammunition.(I then find out (from C.C.I.) that they make Hornady,Remington and C.C.I The only difference is the color of the tip.It was a good thing I took along an extra Bolt rifle in case of problems. The last time it blew up it left a sqibb in the barrel. They did replace the barrel on the rifle the last time. I was told by a rep at the factory that the rifle has to be completely stripped down and cleaned after 50 shot’s. It took me a 1 year wait to get the rifle and now I will be selling it as I am afraid to shoot it anymore
To me a Scout rifle isn’t a scout rifle unless A) it’s controlled feed. B) it can be fed with stripper clips. Box mags on a bolt gun are dopey it ruins the low profile of the gun and even if you use box mags there should be a clip guide like the M-14 it’s half the reason for the forward scope mount, the other half being the wide field of view around the optic….the “scout” part of scout rifle.

Gidee-up Scout! Looks good, they might have considered using AR mags for the appropriate calibers.

I agree the B-Mag rifle is a disapointment. They need to scrap that, and start over, or somebody needs to step up with a better design. If they don’t do that the cartridge will die on the vine. I realise it is a cost night mare to design a gun from the ground up, but Savage should have asked some shooters before they put the B-Mag out. I also hope this new rifle is not using the same mag system the B-Mag has. The plastic latch on the mag is bound to fail, and leave you with a clumsy single shot at best, unless you are packing more than one mag.
I will look forward to checking out this new rifle, and hope it sells better than the B-Mag has for me!

I have a Marlin heavy barrel stainless and it is a tackdriver and one fun gun to shoot.I can just imagine how much more fun the 17HMR would be in a semi auto.The gun gods are smiling.
I have both .17 HMR and .17 Winchester SuperMag guns.
A Mossberg HMR bolt gun and a Savage heavy barrel B-Mag, plus a Franklin Armory AR type rifle in the Win SuperMag.
Both the Mossy and the B-Mag are quite accurate, but the Win SuperMag just beats the HMR all hollow.
The Franklin AR, being a locked breach, is far better than any blow back autoloader with these higher pressure cartridges.
And the AR is a tack driver, and hasn’t missed a beat as a new designed gun. Two digit serial number.
I have both a Savage heavy barrel B-mag and a Franklin Armory AR in .17 Winchester SuperMag, and just love the cartridge.

I would much rather see Savage make this in the 22 WMR. More knock down and uses a heavier bullet. I lost too many coyote’s with the 17HMR
Ken Wilson; Why are you using a rimfire on a coyote? Would not a .223/.204 or like caliber center fire be more appropriate/humane?
You can put a .17 right through a coyotes eye socket, yeah it’s that accurate. Whats more humane than a perfect head shot. My buddy one shot drops hogs with a .17hmr
The CCI TNT, and Hornady poly tips are no joke…after penetration….kablooey! .22WMR CCI TNT loads will do coyotes no problem either….

No. its a 17Hmr. While a 17HMR case is just a necked down 22mag case the bullet its self is smaller then .22 there for a 22 will not fit in the chamber or the bore. How ever there should be no reason that it can’t be re barreled for 22mag. We’ll just have to see if savage does that.
Would love to a semi auto 17 WSM and 22mag that are reliable and affordable. Volquartsen is building a semi auto 17 WSM but it starts at $1800
Just bought a EEA Appeal 22 Mag bullpup autoloader. It has fired 150 rounds reliably so far. CCI, Winchester 40gn. I fired one mag of Hornady 30 gn and had a stoppage on the second round. Probably ok loading 8 rounds until the gun is broken in. (10 round clip) the action looks like a rem 597 with a weight added to the bolt.
Alexander Arms has been making a semi-auto .17HMR in an AR-15 upper that pops right in to your standard lower. The only mod is the magazine well conversion kit that comes with the upper, and is very easy to instal. $750.00 delivered, there is a bit of a wait, mine took about three months before it was built and shipped.
I bought one, the complete gun, about 6 months ago. These are great their reliable and extremely accurate. A little pricey and mine took 13 months to get they maybe a little quicker now but I recommen it. I had one of magnum receachs and sent it back on the recall after it blew up twice.

The Rep said $465 which means $465 or higher because it is a new gun and demand will be very high at the outset. There are some online sellers that don’t inflate their prices and the street price should come in closer to $399. Like most new guns, it will be hard to get your hands on one for a few months. Your best bet is to pre-order one now. I have the Savage MKII TRR-SR in 17HMR and I love it. It is the most accurate rimfire I have ever fired. I look forward to getting one of these A-17s and testing its accuracy. I also hope that Savage might build a 22WMR with the same design as the A-17…call it the A-22M

I’m warming up to 17hmr, its a flat shooting little bugger but I am totally with you on a .22wmr semi. One of my favorite cartridges! Now if I could find .22Mag ammo….

What about the super 17. better downrange effectiveness. more velocity, and harder hitting. Why wouldn’t you make it in a semi- auto.
I think simply because the .17WSM has been a flop compared to the .17HMR. I bought a BMAG when they first came out and I hated it–burst cases, sporadic grouping. Then they come out with version 2 that has the heavy barrel (which they should have done FIRST). The bolt sucks on the BMAG, too.
The BMAG would have been better off on a modified 93 receiver and heavy barrel. Oh and the BMAG magazine sucks, too.
