Sen. Manchin and Trump Working Together on Gun Control Bill?

Fake news? Or is there actual merit to the claim that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) believes he will be able to work together with the Trump administration to pass gun control reform?

Well, first, the source. In a lengthy story, titled, “Trump vs. Congress: Now What?” published by The New York Times Magazine, journalist Robert Draper wrote the following with respect to a discussion between Manchin and Trump:

Later that month, Manchin went on “Morning Joe” — the one show on MSNBC that Trump has been known to watch — to discuss, on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the Newtown school massacre, the need to expand background checks on gun purchases. Within an hour after Manchin was offscreen, his cellphone rang. It was Trump. Manchin was not completely forthcoming about the conversation, but he did tell me that he envisioned “a complete opportunity” for new gun-safety legislation. Unlike with Obama, he said, “no one thinks President Trump would do anything that would take away your gun rights.”

Say what?!!!

One will recall the 2A-tune candidate Trump sang on the campaign trail before he took the oval office.

“I will not let you down. Remember that. I will not let you down,” said Trump, last May at the NRA Leadership Forum after officially receiving the gun lobby’s endorsement for president.

“The only way to save our Second Amendment is to vote for a person that you all know named Donald Trump,” he continued. “I will never let you down. I will protect our Second Amendment.”

Hmmm. Would cutting a deal with Joe Manchin on, say, universal background checks be letting us down?

I’d say so. You’ll recall that Manchin, along with his buddy Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), tried to push through a comprehensive background check bill known as the Manchin-Toomey amendment following the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

That amendment, which would have criminalized private transfers between law-abiding citizens, failed to clear the Senate in 2013.

The question is whether Manchin would want to revive the bill with Trump in office? He had flirted with the idea of reintroducing it in 2015 under Obama, but the votes just weren’t there to guarantee the results. Remember, a 60 vote threshold is necessary to overcome a filibuster.

“We want to make sure we have the votes. Pat’s going to have to, and I’ll work with him, to get some of our colleagues on the Republican side,” Manchin said in an interview with The Washington Post in 2015.

Of all the gun control bills proposed while Obama was in office, e.g. a prohibition on “assault weapons,” a prohibition on “high capacity magazines,” the one that had the most support in Congress and amongst the public was universal background checks. Polls consistently show that a majority of the (uninformed) public supports requiring background checks on all firearm transfers, including those made online and at gun shows between private buyers and sellers.

It is the lowest hanging fruit for gun-grabbers. If Trump gave up any ground on the 2A front, one would have to think that this would be it. Of course, he’d certainly feel the wrath of the NRA and its millions of members and affiliates who support the organization.

But right now there is not enough evidence to suggest that there is any merit to the claim that Trump is in active negotiations with Manchin to push through gun control. One report in the NY Times just doesn’t suffice.

That said, let’s keep our eyes open. Trump certainly isn’t a gun guy. He is, however, a dealmaker.

Unless he got a felony conviction out of it, being behind on your taxes doesn’t make you fail a background check.

Well, given that there’s an easy way to tell if Joe Manchin’s lying – his lips move – I’d be inclined to led Donald Trump tell us his gun control plans himself.

The President knows he won’t be getting anything from Joe Manchin’s desk through Congress this term, because there aren’t the votes for that. It’d be Obamacare repeal, all over again.

Spoken like a guy who lives in a Free State. Get over yourself. Like the guy you just insulted had any choice where he was born. Not everyone can up and leave a terrible state, due to family, jobs, sick relative, etc. How dare you blame some guy you don’t know and cast your judgement on him as though NY or CA or MA’s hundred year history of gun control is his fault. You think politicians here give two craps what you write them about, what you petition for? You think a local, middle class person has a chance running for office in a liberal cesspool state?

Why don’t you just count your blessings for living in a free state, stop blaming victims of terrible legislation they have no control over, and instead work to get your actual pro-gun politicians to stand up for people in states that are doomed. Or is it easier to just be a keyboard warrior? Thought so.

  • Krag Rhodes April 3, 2017, 12:21 am

Well, Washington state has a great background check. Maybe enforcement is a better choice. If this is real news. I’m thinking it’s not. TRUMP FOR 8!!!

Since Trump has lied about just about everything else, I’d say he cannot be trusted… so far my ‘told you so’ has been correct 100%.

    • Chris April 2, 2017, 5:09 pm

He only lied 100% of the time if you believe the left wing media 100%.

Trump carries a “Heater” & always has been a supporter of the NRA & Americas’ right to BEAR ARMS! I seriously doubt that he would even consider messing with Legal Citizens weapons! It would surely be his down-fall if he did since most voted him in office to save their gun rights! NO ONE should believe anything a Liberal N.Y. paper prints. Bloomberg is probably spewing more B.S. from B.O.!

  • Beachhawk March 31, 2017, 11:13 pm

You cannot believe a word written in the New York Times or Huffington Post especially when it comes to the Second Amendment.

  • Professor Fate March 31, 2017, 10:59 pm

Let’s see now; a Democrat, the New York Times Magazine, the ‘Morning Joe’ program on MSNBC, ‘common sense’ gun control, universal background checks … Nope, I’m not buying any of this BS. There is no way President Trump will pay attention to this Liberal anti-gunner. Notice it’s always the Blue Cities and states that have the most restrictive gun control laws and some of the worst crime. Chicago, anyone? There is no such thing as ‘common sense’ gun control. There’s the Second Amendment right to bear arms and there are illegal restrictions of those rights granted to American citizens. Anyone who thinks they’re made safer by restrictions on carrying or owning a gun or when they’re in a ‘gun free zone’ is either dangerously naive or incredibly stupid. All men are created equal; Sam Colt made sure of it. .

  • Mike Watkins March 31, 2017, 10:36 pm

Here. Take my salt shaker. You probably will need more than just a grain for stuff like this.

Now, truthfully, I don’t 100% trust Mr. Trump, even tho I voted for him. Yes, definitely over Evil Hil.

But we have liberals coming up with all kinds of b.s. to make both conservatives and libs fear and hate Trump. “He’s against women’s healthcare! He is deporting everyone with a foreign-sounding name! He plans on getting us into huge wars!” Face it, libs lie when it suits their purposes.

And now, I suspect, lies to make gun owners believe Trump will turn on us.

So it could happen. Be vigilant, stay in touch with your Congresspersons (unless they are hopeless libs), do all the stuff you know we need to do to safeguard our rights. But don’t believe what you see in the media until you read confirmation from trustworthy conservative sources.

“Trump certainly isn’t a gun guy. He is, however, a dealmaker.”
Deal maker? For sure, but exactly what does Trump think he’s going to get in return for more gun control?
Trouble and nothing good, that’s what, at least from me.

      • Mark From Bristol April 2, 2017, 11:18 am

It’s sure hard to argue against hard facts, and so far I’m becoming pretty disappointed in Mr. Trump. True, electing Clinton would have been immediate death to both OUR Second Amendment and Constitution, but so far with Trump it’s turning into a slow death not dissimilar to lobsters placed into a cold pot of water and placed onto the stove for a slow cook.

  • KimberproSS March 31, 2017, 4:16 pm

“Polls consistently show that a majority of the (uninformed) public supports requiring background checks on all firearm transfers, including those made online and at gun shows between private buyers and sellers.”

Someone explain to me how I can buy a firearm off the internet without a background check! Now if I pick it up in person, OK. But that isn’t really an internet transfer.

    • Nick c April 1, 2017, 3:23 am

In Indiana you have to have all internet gun purchases sent to an FFL for the transfer. Wich means a background check. Private party sales are still ok as long as done in person. Not quite sure why everyone is in an uproar over background checks to buy from a store when most employers do the same thing. Nobody’s b****en bout that. I’m not a criminal and know I’ll pass either check, so what diff. If that’s what it takes to make the grabbers happy and not infringe on my right to buy any type of gun I want. Then so be it. People quit acting like you got something to hide. Some type of reform is coming, and I would rather a “gun guy” kind of President like Trump doing the reform. Remember Trump does hav his carry permit, and carries his own gun. Guy writing this article must have missed that!?!

      • Slick-Willy April 1, 2017, 10:56 am

A friend on mine recently failed his background check. Why ? He’s self-employed and still owes the IRS a balance on his income tax (for 2016). He didn’t pay in enough to cover his total tax-debt for the year. What a crock of shit !!

        • Frank April 2, 2017, 1:48 am

Let’s all remember that when Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook murderer, went on his rampage, he murdered his mother, took her guns, went to the school and did his thing. Somebody tell me how “universal background checks”, had they been required at that time, have stopped Lanza from mass murder? Anyone?

    • Bob Bacon March 31, 2017, 11:05 pm

Sandy Hoax was a “drill that went live. “

    • Nick c April 1, 2017, 3:31 am

No matter what people who want something will get it. Even guns. A criminal doesn’t care if its legal no more than a crack head. Its illegal to buy and sell drugs, but that doesn’t change the fact that anyone can go out and buy a kilo of cocaine. Or any kind of fire arm. All it takes is a willingness to break the law, enough money, and the right supplier.

It is amazing to see all the evidence brought out on the Sandy hook drill gone viral, pushed by the ant-gunners and accepted as real! How else do those supposedly dead people end up in photos, school pictures, facebook, and other social media sites today! Why no one has come right out and exposed it for what it was, would put far too many people out of a job never to be employed again and more than likely many in government in jail over!

When ANY politician starts talking GUN CONTROL, it MEANS only ONE THING, Firearm Restrictions and eventual CONFISCATION! PERIOD!
The wording on the 2A is CLEAR and CONCISE!
“The RIGHT to KEEP and BEAR ARMS, shall NOT be INFRINGED” PERIOD!
    KEEP = HAVE, OWN, POSSESS!
BEAR = CARRY, HAVE ON PERSON!
ARMS = Whatever I can afford to OWN and SHOOT!
And yes, IF that means a Mini-Gun, a Cannon or an MLRS, so be it!

  • Bob Heffern March 31, 2017, 11:52 am

Here is your answer I feel the problem with gun,s is.
EXISTING GUN LAWS ARE ( NOT ) BEING ENFORCED. (AMEN).
YET THEY WANT MORE GUN LAWS ???????? Chicago is proof of that. Gang,s run all the street,s , pass out the drug,s, and they are protected by the Cartel,s. Gang rivalry over drug sales causes the murders. When a person get,s hooked on the drug,s , they need money to buy more drug,s to stop their craving,s and they will murder someone to get the money to buy the drug,s.
The Chicago Police are also worried that if they intervene to much, the Cartel,s will kill them and their whole families.

Trump has ordered the Fed,s to go in and quietly clean up this mess. And they have just begun to make arrest,s. And this is only the beginning . Obama did nothing while this was happening. But Obama sure was a good acter of fake crying on the National News. And most of the news we see are all lies because the Elite tell,s them what to report or else.
I Hope You See What,s Behind All This Problem The (ELITES).

    • Greg March 31, 2017, 1:15 pm

Correct,we do have existing gun laws on illegal purchasing crime and also Universal backround checks.on the books now.those need to be enforced, we dont need new gun laws as they are just policical fodder to boost the sponsors and restrict freedoms in the future. Trump knows the overall importance of 2a. He will get great council from NRA leaders. We still need to watch closely. Trust but verify!

      • Bob Bacon March 31, 2017, 11:08 pm

  • Richard March 31, 2017, 11:11 am

When this whole thing flared up in Sandy Hook, I sent a letter to my Senator, Susan Collins, suggesting a one time background check, followed by a letter on your driver’s license, similar to the M for motorcycle or the class endorsement to drive larger trucks, say an F for firearms. If the holder committed an act that would suspend his/her right to purchase, they would surrender their license and be issued a new one without the endorsement. This would allow anyone with the license to purchase a firearm from anyone. Make the penalty for abuse so stiff no one would abuse it. Needless to say, my rino senator didn’t consider the idea which told me where she stood.

    • walter reinhold March 31, 2017, 11:27 am

In 2018 his ass is out of the senate.

    • Warner March 31, 2017, 11:39 am

Good idea but your DL is not a federal document so there’s no reason a senator should embrace it.

      • Roger March 31, 2017, 11:44 am

And you Social Security number will never be used for identification.

      • Nick c April 1, 2017, 3:50 am

Well make DL’s federal. They’re good to drive on in all 50, and maybe that could help with some of the ID theft as well. And the non-english speaking out on our roads. I didn’t get to have a family member read the test to me in my native toung. Anyways thats a good idea one DL good for all 50 with an endorsement for concealed carry in all 50.

    • Retrocon March 31, 2017, 11:40 am

We will also need a few other identifiers on that license… how about S for your entitlement to speak freely and criticize your politicians? Or a P, to prove you have the privilege to publish a political blog?

    • Erick March 31, 2017, 12:57 pm

Sorry Richard, but your logic is the same as requiring concealed-carry permits, fingerprinting, background checks, and all the other schemes – it doesn’t solve anything. Criminals still commit crimes, with guns, despite these schemes, and regardless of stiff penalties. More paperwork only adds to the burden and cost for LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS.
Let’s not forget the wording and intention of the Second-Amendment – there is no requirement to have government permission (i.e. licenses, permits, background checks, etc.). Are there any for your right to speech, right to religion, right to due process? No.
Criminals will not care about the F stamp on their driver’s license and will obtain firearms regardless. Many criminals don’t even have a drivers license, but, they still drive vehicles.
More government, more licensing, more paperwork, more laws, more of the same will not do anything. I wish it would, wish it could, but it doesn’t. Reality doesn’t work out the same way as it does on paper (legal theory).

  • Ronald Wright March 31, 2017, 11:11 am

We ALREADY have a comprehensive BACK GROUND CHECK SYSTEM in place! What more does Manchin want in a back ground check anyway?

Stupid article with no real content. Are these “politicians” this stupid or does it just appear that way?

    • Gomer Pyle March 31, 2017, 11:25 pm

Actually the good Senator is that dumb.

  • Johnh March 31, 2017, 11:10 am

If you see all of the evidence there is on Sandy Hook, you will see that it was a staged shooting. Never happened.
The school had been condemned and not used until this put on show. The ADA marking in the parking lot were not up to date. You can see one man playing three different rows. Many other things show that this was a staged shooting to turn the AR-15 into the bad thing. Check for your self.

  • Alan Yates March 31, 2017, 11:08 am

This sort of faked news is something I would not have anticipated coming from you. When the president needs our support you and the left wingnuts ‘create’ a news flash designed to do nothing but destroy his support. UNLESS you can tell us what Trump said to Manchin, ( He could have been eating his ass out for his remarks…or it might NOT have even been Trump ) then you need to leave this crap alone. What do you not comprehend in regard to fake/faked news like this. Can your editors not waste a hour vetting such stories before you turn them loose on people who trust ( used to trust ) you? You do not have an obligation to spread ever rumor you come across. As for Trump? IMHO he carries now. He told the SS detail he was going to and my 34 years as a cop tells me he does.

  • Sparksfly March 31, 2017, 10:31 am

Considering Trump’s track record on the other promises he’s made, I sure don’t consider my 2nd Amendment rights safe with him in charge. Just wait until the next time someone uses an “assault rifle” in an attack and see whether or not Trump says “we can’t let “the terrorists” own weapons like this.”

    • MJB March 31, 2017, 11:13 am

Trump would not commit political suicide by doing this and neither would Manchin. This kind of story is just a way to get declining gun sales going again.

    • Retrocon Un? March 31, 2017, 11:45 am

What? Trump is keeping his promises. The only one not fulfilled that can be done without legislation so far is DACA. And on that, we shouldn’t bother with it until we’ve cleaned up the criminal felony scum illegals.

      • davud April 1, 2017, 2:17 am

trump has not repealed obamacare. trump has not enacted any policies that restore american jobs. trump has not created any bars to immigration that have withstood judicial scrutiny. no promises kept as of yet.

  • robert hall March 31, 2017, 10:29 am

I do not think that back ground checks are the answer here its the damn assholes that steal guns and ammo that are the problem. You can have back grounds checks all day long on every law biding person in america, but as long as you have dirtbags that do as they please then this problem will never die. and when they do get cought they blame it all on society or there mom beat them or the man keeps them down, no body takes responsibility for their own actions. The so called legal system in this country needs to do more to get these assholes off our streets. say what you will about this comment but the minute that this starts to happens you will see a improvement in gun violence. gun violence will never go away you will always have some knucklhead that thinks by using a gun will solve all his problems. It all starts with getting the criminal element off our streets. Do not get me started on mental pepole they should never have guns.

  • Walt Walters March 31, 2017, 10:15 am

Just what do you mean, Trump isn’t a gun guy? He used to carry!

    • Vanns40 March 31, 2017, 11:12 am

“He used to carry”? So what? Some of the biggest gun banners in this country have said “I believe in the Second Amendment BUT…”. Josh Sugarman, the head of one such organization, who supports every gun law that has ever been proposed Actually has an FFL himself!

Michael Bloomberg believes handguns should be so tightly restricted that you’d, for all intents and purposes, never be able to take them out of your house and being able to purchase one would be so time consuming and expensive that only the very richest could afford it. Yet he fully supports HIS bodyguards being able to carry submachine guns. Don’t ever underestimate the ability of politicians or the NRA to sell us out and try and make us feel as though we’ve had a huge win!

  • Lee March 31, 2017, 9:56 am

I still wonder if Sandy Hook actually happened… other than what the mainstream media told everyone, there isn’t anything to show that it did. Where are the actual crime scene photo’s? Where is any physical evidence?

Seriously, your talking about a modern school with high def. cameras that had audio. And those videos aren’t even available to law enforcement, yet we see footage from columbine almost 20 years ago and other current shootings in active shooter school… Where’s the beef?

    • Johnh March 31, 2017, 11:13 am

You are right. go on line and check for your self. there is plenty of information out there to show it was staged.

    • MJB March 31, 2017, 11:19 am

I agree, I want to see some interviews of parents that lost children, funeral footage and some grave markers. Could this be just more fake news? I think it might be. I never trusted anybody in the Obama administration or even Obama to give it to us straight. They had an ugly anti-constitution agenda that I never trusted.

Instead of viewing looney websites, actually do the research yourself, it’s not hard, check public records and follow up. It won’t take you long to figure out yes, this did happen and those who say it didn’t are the right wing sheeple.

  • Rob March 31, 2017, 9:44 am

As a West Virginian (Sen. Manchin’s home State) I can tell you that Senator Manchin isn’t thinking about passing any type of gun control measures for the next two years as he’s facing re-election. Manchin knows that his political azz is on the line and he doesn’t want to remind people of his association with the Obama administration and the liberal policies they pushed in this regard. Those policies that Manchin was pushing were popular in Washington D.C., but were despised here at home. West Virginia loves Trump in a BIG way. The man owns this State politically, and this is a non issue.
This article is disappointing. I didn’t think Guns America would stoop to the level of the New York Times, et al, and spread what could be considered “fake news”.

  • Shecky March 31, 2017, 9:41 am

I see guns America is on the fake news bandwagon….way to go, you’ve stooped as low as the idiot liberals. Your journalistic standards are what I’ve come to expect from the moronic left. Are you trying that hard to be like them?

For Universal Background Checks to work (i.e., be enforcable), we must have universal registration of every firearm and a central record of ownership. THAT’s the rub. And every time – EVERY time – there’s been universal compulsory registration, that has been followed by some form of compulsory confiscation / collection (Germany, England, Australia, California, New York,…..)

  • Mike Veilleux March 31, 2017, 8:49 am

For universal backround checks to work, wouldn’t you have to establish a registry? How would one enforce this law in the case of a guy selling his gun to another guy in person? Honor system?
When the universal check system is seen to not prevent what it intends to, which it likely wouldn’t, isn’t the next step more restrictions?

    • Walt Walters March 31, 2017, 10:20 am

NOPE, next step after registration is confiscation look at the comment above England, Australia, Germany, etc.
The better way to go is like Switzerland! Government issued guns to each adult citizen and they have the lowest crime rate in the world!
That would put a stop to all this crap!

  • Danny March 31, 2017, 8:47 am

What is there to keep us from not registering any weapons at all? The thing is that all new transactions we would have no choice but to register. Now, to me, this is just a rumor. I won’t believe it until I see it! Trump ran on returning the country back to the people. Something like this would be a disaster for freedom loving Americans all across the country that we love! It would become a stepping stone for more gun grabber measures in the future, until we end up just like Australia.!

    • Walt Walters March 31, 2017, 10:24 am

I am with you, especially since the article is from the NYT. They certainly CAN’T B trusted to report the truth about anything!

    • Tony March 31, 2017, 12:19 pm

Hey, ya know that right now is not a good time to be trumpeting Trump’s promises of “returning the country back to the people”!!! NOT with his threatening the VERY best people in our government just yesterday friggin’ morning!! And especially for demanding that they sell us all down the river to a radical big government/ socialistic set of policies like that GARBAGE healthcare BS written by the SCUM RINOs who run that SWAMP in DC!! NOBODY threatens the Freedom Caucus and Heritage, and gets away with it, muthaphukkas!!!! Not even a(nother) carnival barkin’, snake oil-sellin’ clown who lied his way to the presidency!! Btw, I’m not saying I’m all done with him yet, but yesterday was an effin’ HUGE day for me – and my attention level is on freakin’ emergency alert now. Like red level for fire when it’s about 110 degrees and the ground is dry as a popcorn fart.

  • Dave March 31, 2017, 8:45 am

I’ve seen betrayal on the horizon long ago. I certainly hope DJT will not be the guy to do it. But, having seen the writing on the wall, I have for years bought every private sale gun I could find. I suggest the rest of you do the same. Buy the gun privately, and get a few cases of ammo for it, and stash both. To save money buy guns in the same calibers, so you can buy fewer cases of ammo.

  • Robert March 31, 2017, 8:39 am

C’mon……Keeping guns out of the hands who may be mentally unhealthy is a GOOD thing…….The Newton shooter, HIS MOTHER bought the weapons used……That, in itself, is illegal……..Back ground checks DON’T catch acts like that………..A way has to be found that enables the FBI to have names of those who SHOULD NOT be able to buy or own a gun.

    • JT March 31, 2017, 9:05 am

The only thing that keeps our government from having a complete database of who and what type of guns people have is the fact that I can buy legally from an individual. Once they outlaw individual transfers what to stop the government from starting a mandatory buyback program? You might think this is just paranoia thinking but it has happened several times in different countries.

      • Walt Walters March 31, 2017, 10:33 am

Remember people three is NO CONCEIVABLE law known to man that will keep the guns out of the criminals hangs! If you disarm the law abiding people only the government and criminals will have guns. And statistically speaking the law abiding citizen makes up less than one tenth of one percent of weapons crimes in the USA.
And everyone KNOWS that the government can be trusted not to try to take total dictator control of the people! Yeah, RIGHT!
        BHO tried and failed!

    • Sparksfly March 31, 2017, 10:32 am

It wasn’t illegal to buy used firearms in CT when she made her purchases.

    • Luke March 31, 2017, 11:09 am

“A way has to be found that enables the FBI to have names of those who SHOULD NOT be able to buy or own a gun.”

Did you never hear of NCIC?

  • roger March 31, 2017, 8:34 am

Sad that GunsAmerica would put out this bull crap. I thought we were pro gun here not fear mongering. Kind of like saying the Russians did it.

  • Beencheckedalready March 31, 2017, 8:29 am

The inherent fraud of “universal background checks” is the fact that the vast majority of legal gun owners have already gone through at least one background check in our lives. It makes no sense to be required to go through a background check every single time we buy or sell a firearm. I say allow us a single background check that lasts for a specific time period, similar to our concealed carry licenses.

    • norecord March 31, 2017, 10:00 am

Technically other than the dealer, no one is supposed to maintain a copy of that after a specified period of time.

      • Don T March 31, 2017, 11:28 am

Technically that is true, however would we ever know what records they keep each time the FFL calls when you get a background check? And then, as we have seen for a few years now, the NSA and recently, the CIA, are tracking all internet, phone calls, texts, etc. and recording them. So it would be very easy to set up software to track specific purchases and store it in a easy to search format, and knowing the past administration, I’d say it’s safe to say they were doing it and likely still are. We’ll never know. But whatever Trump does, we are only given a temporary reprieve anyways. As long as 99.9% of the media is controlled by globalists, they will continue to “brainwash” the masses until they have enough who believe citizens owning guns is a bad idea, then they will be able to make their move. And of course it will be incremental until they are ready for the final grab. It may take a little longer now because they didn’t get their “lady” but this will not stop them. Unless there is some way to stop the propaganda machine, it’s will only be a matter of time.

  • Badlandsnative March 31, 2017, 8:13 am

In my youth I use to go to gun shows every year in Wyoming, Nebraska,South Dakota and Montana and now South Carolina. I can say now that some times the FFl dealers are their own and our worse enemy.. I have seen these dealers keep their so called Private collection off the books. In one case a couple guys were whispering beside me about one FFL dealer who did not do back ground checks on his private collection. I observed the cash exchange for the quote private sale and saw the dealer hand over a pistol to what I would consider a couple of guys who should have had a back ground check. You damn right I believe in back ground checks and if you are going to be a dealer then you should be restricted to selling firearms only after paperwork is filled out. Any dealer who sells from his so called private collection for cash should be locked up. At least is would stop some of the liberals strong points of truth about gun shows..

    • Don T March 31, 2017, 11:39 am

You do make a point and also technically, private sellers aren’t legally supposed to buy and sell for profit, but many do it anyways, which does provide “ammunition” to the gun grabbers. So I’d prefer that gun owners would follow the rules, however, I suspect that many feel that the laws already on the books really do, little to nothing, to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. And I tend to agree because criminals by their nature, don’t follow laws, so laws only matter to those who follow them. And example, say someone who is willing to kill others. If someone is willing to commit first degree murder, do you think they are concerned about buying a gun on the black market or stealing one. Or are they concerned that a school or wherever is a no gun zone. That is just silly. And as long as the borders can be crossed, both legally and illegally, there will always be guns coming it. Gun laws are primarily a way to restrict citizens who follow the rules. They really have no effect on criminals. One could argue that making them harder to get will drive up prices and in some cases that may be true, but this would not stop criminals from getting them. It would only mean more profits for the black market, which are only more criminals.

  • Tim March 31, 2017, 8:02 am

First off Sandy Hook was an absolute hoax played out in the fake media as real and everyone believed it.
Second off, Trump isn’t going to do anything to violate our 2nd Amendment.

you’re absolutely correct. Its so blatant of a hoax, its amazing that people still think it actually happened. They know that all they have to do is have the media report on it and people will believe it. Anderson Cooper was one of the main liars/fakes for the Sandy Hoax fiasco

  • Charlie J Boudreaux March 31, 2017, 5:47 am

Gun safety legislation says He, a good start would be to pass the Hearing Protection Act and national carry permit reciprocity(for safety, it’s for the children) then we can talk about some other onerous points in the NFA

  • Dave beagle March 31, 2017, 4:36 am

  • MD March 31, 2017, 4:02 am

Look, I may be in the minority here, but I WANT universal background checks. It is a (for us) a minor concession that will allow us to take a good deal of wind out of the anti-gunners. Unlike most of you here, I feel, most of my acquaintances are very anti-gun liberals. The woman I date is one of them. As a guy that always carries (in a very blue state) and owns dozens of guns, I hear their arguments against us all of the time. I can argue and convince them that “AWB” bans make no sense, that the repeal of the NFA is just, that all state should be shall issue, etc – but background checks is a tough one. We can easily create a system that allows for universal background checks. Even for private transfers. I want law abiding citizens to be able to own whatever firearms they want, but I also want to create as many obstacles as possible for criminals to procure such.

    • Rome March 31, 2017, 6:54 am

You actually believe that passing universal BGC law would “take wind out of their sails”? You live in a blue state and haven’t learned yet that concessions to liberals only serves to empower them, make them think they are right about everything, and spur them towards their next gungrabbing goal? Cmon man.

    • Infidel76251 March 31, 2017, 7:34 am

Keep throwing a dog at a time to the wolves and pretty soon you won’t have any dogs left. We have been giving and giving for years but have gotten nothing back in return.

    • Infidel7.62 March 31, 2017, 7:40 am

You can’t keep throwing your dogs to the wolves one at time thinking you will save yourself in the long run. Pretty soon you will be out of wolves. We have been giving and giving for years but we never get any concessions from the left and never will. They won’t be happy until they get total control (disarmament), even if they have to do it one concession at a time.

    • Dan March 31, 2017, 7:45 am

What you fail to realize is that it won’t take any wind out of the anti-gunner’s sails. You can give them something every year and they won’t stop. That is why a policy of no compromise is imperative. If we keep compromising, eventually there will be nothing left to compromise and once you lose it it will likely never be coming back.

    • bison1913 March 31, 2017, 7:45 am

    • KCSHOOTER March 31, 2017, 8:30 am

      You’re part of the problem.

    • Sierra175 March 31, 2017, 10:06 am

I agree with all other comments here. Also, how would UBCs stop criminals from buying guns? They would still buy firearms from other criminals, same as they do now. Once again, legislation designed to ‘protect us’, is doing nothing nothing to prevent criminals from obtaining or using weapons (because they always will), and everything to limit our freedoms and take away freedoms down the road. You can’t prevent a free man who wants to commit a crime from doing so. What does that tell you? It says that certain people will not stop trying to until no man is free. You want to reduce the crazies? Go have a conversation with your neighbor. Go talk to someone in your community about their day. Volunteer somewhere. You want to be safe? Buy guns, get a CCW (if you need one in your state), and educate yourself and train. Being an active member of your community, and being knowledgeable, capable, and prepared, trumps any legislation written on a piece of paper any day. Changing things for the better starts with us, not with the politicians. Not with letters on a page, signed by someone you don’t know. That goes both ways here. We can’t think that by having a new president who might put some words into law that that’s going to protect anyone. Go out and talk to people. You don’t have to change their opinion. You don’t even have to talk about guns. The responsibility to protect myself, my family, and my countrymen is mine, no one elses. And that doesn’t mean just carrying and waiting for the S to HTF. It means staying vigilant and actually caring about what’s happening around me. That’s my challenge to myself this year. To put more into my community to make it better for everyone. I’ve been guilty before of everything I’ve said above, and I don’t think it helps anything. If I really want to help and be useful, I need to be there for my fellow Americans. That starts with those around me. I would hope that more people will try and do the same. We have to stop dividing ourselves. Regardless of how it seems on social media and the news, we are capable of living together and having differing opinions at the same time. The key is having the freedom to exercise your rights and opinions, and never giving them up. Others can choose not to exercise their rights, if that’s their opinion. But they can’t take ours away. If we’re united, person to person, no one should want to. We need to focus on the actual problems. I think that starts by preventing them by knowing whats going on around us, and offering to help. I don’t want to wait for the next person to go crazy and decide to shoot people so I can play hero, I want to stop that from happening in the first place.

    • Cam March 31, 2017, 10:44 am

      You are the problem.

    • Don T March 31, 2017, 11:53 am

One can argue both ways but criminals aren’t going to buy a gun from a FFL and have a background check. It’s sort of like saying, bank robbers must maintain an account at the bank they rob. History repeatedly shows that universal background checks leads to knowing who has what firearms, followed by, firearm buyback programs using the threat of imprisonment, followed by full confiscation. If it were true that the government is actually concerned about our welfare and that we can trust them, then it wouldn’t be an issue. But history is replete with examples of governments persecuting, imprisoning and killing their citizens. Look at every nation that has been around for a period of time. They all eventually do it. To believe otherwise is to buy into the propaganda that they dish out daily. The education system, the media, etc. are there mainly to convince us that the government is good and they care about us. And that the U.S. is somehow exempt from this happening because we are special! And the most recent propaganda is “our party” cares about us and our concerns! Really? Does anyone really believe that any politician from any party actually cares one iota about you or me? Really? Come on people. It’s not that there may be a few good people who’ve made it up there but most simple aren’t. Many of them don’t even care about their own family. Do you think they care about you and yours?

Anyone who has worked in the D. C. Swamp knows that every media format is dissected daily for all information (even small tidbits) that relate to every commodity area. These are put on hot sheets and distributed to appropriate staff for internal validation, comment or damage control. This being the case and the White House doing daily battles with fake news and Trump not being known for personal restraint on twitter begs the question: Why was no statement issued when a main party and presidential platform issue of solid 2A support is alleged to be potentially compromised by “a complete opportunity for new gun safety legislation” (gun control)?

  • Mark March 30, 2017, 10:52 pm

  • KUETSA March 30, 2017, 7:46 pm

Take AWAY our gun rights – WE, LIVING IN PROGRESSIVE SOCIALIST/COMMUNIST STATES, NEED OUR GUN RIGHTS RESTORED! (And it BETTER happen once Gorsuch is seated in the Supreme Court) We are NOT surrendering our effective rifles that enable the capability intended by the second amendment, to progressive communist globalists that are working to achieve citizen disarmament!

    • JPayne March 31, 2017, 8:31 am

If you want your gun rights restored, you better get involved in your local and state politics and stop voting for idiot politicians who think that less guns, more restrictions and gun free zones make you safe. It’s your own fault for having rights restricted

  • Christopher Todd March 30, 2017, 3:01 pm

The vast majority of what the New York Times says is total BS.

With that said, in the extremely unlikely event that this is true, how about this idea, hear me out:

We will accept universal background checks… In exchange national reciprocity gets passed and the National Firearms Act, as well as the Huges Amendment gets fully repealed.

I could get behind that deal, anybody else?

    • CharlieKing1 March 30, 2017, 10:53 pm

Okay, I’ll bite…accept Universal Background Checks in exchange for repealing two other laws? Really? Do you know what Universal Background Checks entail? Please help me understand! No Universal Background Checks, not now, or ever!

    • Cyrus March 31, 2017, 8:54 am

Chris Todd – I agree with you. I live in CT, one of the worst States for Gun right advocates and am surrounded by even worse with NY and MA. I am a steadfast 2A constitutionalist! Every weapon I own is legally registered with the State of Ct. I have a CCP as well. I have absolutely nothing to hide and if I feel like it I can go out on any given day and buy any gun that is legal to own in the State of CT from a registered Gun Dealer. That said, I would gladly vote for Universal Background checks, which will never effect me as long as I do not get into any trouble . . . but I will never vote for it unless they agree to give us the National Reciprocity Act and National Hearing Protection Act. If you think about this, it is a really fair trade. If the National Reciprocity Act was ever to be seriously considered, we could all re-submit National Federal Forms qualifying us in all States. The price of our renewals should be a very fair price and never be allowed to be raised like that Mother Fucker Gov. Daniel Malloy proposes in CT; From $70 every 5 years to $370 +/-. If you are already officially legal in one state than you cannot be disqualified from a Federal Nationwide Permit! Don’t know about the rest of you but I went through a State wide background check and a national FBI background check to be cleared for my CT CCP. Again, I have nothing to hide and am a legal law abiding, tax paying American, who has the Constitutional right and State right to carry a concealed weapon should I ever feel the need to.
      https://ctmirror.org/2017/02/13/pistol-permit-fee-hikes-prompt-a-sharp-rebuke-of-malloy/
Feel free to Flame me now!

      • Cam March 31, 2017, 10:55 am

wow, I started to flame you but what’s the point but after typing two paragraphs I just erased it and will say it’s you opinion and you can have it. It’s your right. It’s fine if you want to give up your freedom and rights but I do not. I live in a free state, my guns are not registered, I don’t need a piece of paper to go buy a gun and ammo.
The fact that you need that and advocate that depresses me because men and women have lived and dies to preserve freedom and you would throw their sacrifice away.

      • BigC March 31, 2017, 10:57 am

To your point of CCW renewal fees, I don’t believe there should even be such a thing. The 2nd Amendment wasn’t intended to be a money making proposition! Paying a fee for an inalienable right is not only bullshit, it’s un-Constitutional but I could even live with that, if they were issued for life, there’s no real need to have to get renewed every few years, just another money grab!!!!!!!
Trump should stop that renewal BS along with instituting NATIONAL RECIPROCITY!!!!

    • Guy March 31, 2017, 9:26 am

Universal background checks will be like no fly list except way way way more “mistakes” where your name flags “whoops you’re a homeschooler, whoops you voted anything but commie, whoops you forgot to pay a parking ticket” No explanation will be given to you and your local FFL will have no choice but to deny purchase. Also, I am totally against the NFA but wanting to be able to buy SBR’s, silencers etc etc without the tax and wait is not a good swap for losing right to buy in the first place. National concealed carry would be great but how realistic is it for most who already have CCW? If you drive all over the country every week all year, yeah. It would benefit those that live in a terrible state that doesn’t allow it and everyone should have the right to carry and protect. If you want to get a license to carry…Move to a state that allows it. But no deals should be made that are not equal. Bottom line, don’t trust whatever “safe common sense measure” they put in your face. It will be abused…
