Is the Sig SB15 Brace legal or illegal?

Authors Rapid Fire This Week

The Military Arms Channel raises an interesting question:

The BATF has changed its mind and decided that shouldering the Sig SB15 Brace is illegal. They claim in shouldering the brace you’re remanufacturing the firearm and creating an illegal SBR. However, is the brace itself illegal?

Okay. This was introduced as a forearm brace for a pistol. As such, it excels. Problem: After this came out, I did some research of things the BATFE is capable of understanding (which isn’t very much). For every picture I saw of this brace being used properly, on the forearm, supporting a ridiculously over-sized “pistol”, I saw three of it being used to turn same “pistol” into a short barreled rifle.
Look, people; the FED can understand pictures. They can see that this forearm brace will certainly be used to skate around the law, turning pistols into short barreled rifles. So they changed their position; now its illegal. They ignored the text and looked at the pictures. SHEESH! Face it, we drew, aimed, and shot ourselves in the foot by releasing so damn many images of the brace being used as a stock. Open mouth, insert foot. We did it to ourselves.
Maybe the next great skate-around won’t be so heavily advertised as a skate-around. Then maybe we will be able to use and keep them.

well said. I’m always amazed at the fools that feel compelled to post everything you can imagine on YouTube. It just makes me shake my head. What a bunch of dopes. Even if I do something legal, it is not broadcast outside of my immediate realm.
blast away at me if you will about our freedoms and rights to do whatever we want, but in my years in the Marine Corps and working for the Department of Defense, I’ve decided that even though you can, you shouldn’t !

This issue can’t lose steam. The M855 seems to be taking center stage at the moment, and rightfully so, considering it’s more time sensitive. I just hope the AR-15 community doesn’t lose sight of this, no matter what happens on March 16th. There is still work to do.

An opinion is not a “LAW”! If a person who buys something legal wants to use it for a different purpose that’s not illegal. The word “remanufacture” can’t even apply here, because the word in itself is an improper use. If you’re not physically altering the “Sig Brace” than you’re not “remanufacturing it. If I buy a tire and want to use it as a swing is the Motor Vehicle Dept. going to come and arrest me. Besides the BATFE contradicted itself in first approving its use. The Sig Brace is not a permanent attachment, and butt stocks are. Until they can show a written law that the Sig Brace is illegal to be used as a shoulder stock than what they have said is just that, “an opinion”!
