SNL Mocks American Gun Culture

2nd Amendment – R2KBA Authors S.H. Blannelberry This Week

Saturday Night Live took a rather amusing jab at American gun culture this past weekend. I say “rather amusing,” because, admittedly, I did chuckle a bit while watching it.

Yet, the satirization of one’s right to keep and bear arms begins to lose its comedic import when one considers the underpinnings of the message: America has too many guns, and we need to enact laws that greatly restrict the 2A.

Is that a fair takeaway? I’m I reading too much into the skit? I don’t think so. After all, one of the creative architects of the video is comedian Amy Schumer, a newfound devotee and spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun-control organization funded by billionaire business magnate Michael Bloomberg.

Following a shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, that was playing her movie “Trainwreck,” Schumer jumped on the gun-control bandwagon, endorsing tougher gun laws including universal background checks.

“These are not extreme ideas,” said Amy Schumer at an August press briefing where she was standing beside her distant cousin Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY). “No one wants to live in a country where a felon, the mentally ill or other dangerous people can get their hands on a gun with such ease.”

“These shootings have got to stop,” she added. “I don’t know how else to say it.”

Like so many young, hip celebrities, Schumer seems to believe everything the mainstream media and anti-gun interests groups feed to her on firearms: Guns are bad. Guns are dangerous. Gun ownership should be heavily regulated.

But if she were to open her eyes, do some independent research and talk to some of her peers in Hollywood who are gun owners (Brad Pitt or Vince Vaughn may be helpful to talk to), she’d begin to realize that guns aren’t the problem — but bad people are the problem.

What we need to do is increase restrictions and regulations on evildoers, the dangerously mentally ill, violent felons, etc. We do that, we’ll reduce not only gun-related violence but all violence. It’s really not a hard concept to understand, especially if you take the time to think about it. Yet, asking anyone to think these days — let alone a Hollywood starlet — is like asking for rain while standing in the desert.  It’s an impossibly tall order.

    I stopped watching SNL in the early 80’s, STILL not funny and not swayed by the “Laff track”(who by the way were recorded in the 30’s during radio shows so most of the laughs you hear are from dead people) I cannot understand how someone can latch on to something without any knowledge of the subject. Why don’t they get behind Ted Nugent’s move to ban swimming pools because more people die in pool accidents that gun? They ALL think that when they take over(Because no guns) they will be on the side of proletariat, but like Stalin, Pol Pot Mao, Castro It’s me first and up yours. Same with Bernie Sanders Government should control everything. When you start talking of the 200 plus million people killed by the above, the retort is “well not here” BUT that what the Founding Fathers were worried about because of the things the British Government were doing why they added the the 2nd amendment.

    Ah…the liberal dopers / actors of America. It never ceases to amaze me how people buy off on the uninformed so called Hollywood elite. Their fine making violent movies with gory scenes, multiple shootings, people blown up and dead all over the place. These are people for the most part able to afford personal armed security for protection. The coke snorting , pill popping, dope smoking bafoons from SNL and other zombies like them are clueless to the truth of the matter at hand. They create more gun issues than anyone else who owns one. They are too ignorant to see how the stuff they do has a major impact in our communities and the minds of our children. Obamanation has made gun dealers rich with his threats of confiscation. SNL needs to go to rehab along with actors and liberals alike. Maybe they’ll get there minds right.

    Ahhh…you know things are OK when SNL does a skit about it.
    Want to do something meaningful? Get the guns out of the hands of criminals and thugs and gangbangers….prosecute gun crimes with strict penalties and NO early releases…
    THEN see what happens to the statistics. May not need any new laws after that….
    Just sayin’…..

    I think Chuck Schumer is funnier than that comedienne niece of his and he’s right up there with a heart-attack!

    I am a supporter of the 1st Amendment, so I support SNL’s right to free speech. However, I am not amused by this asinine portrayal of gun owners. If this is the way they see us, then I’m wondering what we can do to improve our image? It’s this type of crap that absorbed by the low-info voter who in all probability will not be able to separate fact from fiction… Oh, in case you’re wondering, I do know how to laugh and occasionally I laugh at myself.

    SNL ceased being funny years ago.

    It’s fascinating to me that the “celebrities” say things like “These shootings have got to stop,” but they never seem to have and aswer as to HOW other than to pass another law restricting law abiding gun ownership. What doesn’t seem to penetrate their drug addled brains is there are plenty of laws on the books but it hasn’t stopped one of these yet. Just as laws against murder, assault, armed robbery, etc. etc. hasn’t stopped any of these crimes.

    They put up signs that read “gun free zone”. When is America going to wake up and realize that “gun free zones” do nothing to curb those who are intent on committing violent acts with a firearm. The only thing “gun free zones” do is restrict those law abiding citizens from the means to protect themselves from a gun wielding criminal or mad man. That signage encourages someone with evil intent to shoot up the place because no one can fight back. People like Amy Schumer and her ilk have no clue, they are merely followers of the left wing anti-gun waving misfits in our society. They sign petitions, they organize into groups of celebrities (who have armed security at their beck and call) and rail about “too may guns” or “look at Australia”. Right, let’s look at Australia. Here are some facts.
    * Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2%
    * Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6%
    * Australia-wide, armed-robberies are up 44% (yes, FORTY-FOUR PERCENT)
    * In the state of Victoria, homicides-with-firearms are up 300%
    * Figures over the previous 25 years show a steady decrease in homicides-with-firearms (changed dramatically in the past 12 months)
    * Figures over the previous 25 years show a steady decrease in armed-robbery-with-firearms (changed dramatically in the past 12 months)
    * There has been a dramatic increase in break-ins-and-assaults-of-the-elderly. Note that the increases have all been SINCE the CONFISCATION of firearms from all law abiding citizens.

    So to the entire alphabet soup MSM and concerned “celebrities” we have more than enough laws on the books concerning the ownership of firearms. One more wouldn’t prevent any of these attacks. GUN FREE ZONES=TARGET RICH ENVIRONMENT and evil people will find a way to do the most evil no matter the law you pass. Remember that and act accordingly.

    Put all their liberal heads together and you still would not have one complete brain.

    I cannot go through life thinking that every comedian has an anti gun agenda. Comedians see everyone as fair game. I thought the SNL skit was funny and in good taste. At least SNL recognizes the fact that guns are here to stay. You have to admit that the skit was so unrealistic that there was no intention of casting a negative light on gun owners. If we cannot laugh at ourselves sometimes we have some serious issues among our group.

      Thought it was funny as well. Comedy always offends somebody, that is how it works. My sense of humor is what gets me through the day, regardless of whether it is aimed at me or somebody else.

  • Dr. Strangelove October 19, 2015, 5:53 am

    Still Not Funny. The show has been going steadily downhill since the Belushi/Akroyd/Chase days.

    • Uncle Dave November 14, 2015, 12:05 pm

      Downhill? I agree Dr. Strangelove except to say, I think it hit bottom several years ago and began to dig…! The show itself is a joke. It has taken it’s far left political message that was once subliminal, embraced it and wrapped itself up in the message of social/progressives.
