Springfield Armory is rolling out a pair of neat little AR pistols for different markets — standard capacity and reduced. These guns follow the lines and features of Springfield’s Saint rifles with pistol braces for use in tight quarters and close ranges.

Like the full-size rifles the Saint pistols are chambered for 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington. Springfield offers them with 30- or 10-round Magpul Pmag magazines. The pistols pack a solid set of improved features in addition to being more compact.

The pistols sport an SB Tactical brace and buffer assembly along with other premium accessories. The guns ship with a Bravo Company pistol grip and trigger guard and custom in-house M-Lok lightweight handguard and hand stop.

The handguard features a truncated Picatinny rail along the 12 o’clock position and M-Lok slots everywhere else. The rail has sections at the very front and back for optics and iron sights, leaving a smooth top section for a snag-free forward grip.

Each Saint pistol ships with an SBX-K forearm brace, the updated and lighter weight version of SB Tactical’s pistol brace.

At the end of the new Saint’s muzzle is a large, chambered blast mitigation device. These devices are getting pretty popular with short-barreled rifles and AR pistols. Not only do they control the recoil they redirect noise and gas downrange away from the shooter and anyone else nearby.

The muzzle devices sit at the end of a 7.5-inch barrel. The barrels have a 1-in-7 twist to stabilize the very heavy bullets that do best out of these compact guns. They are 416 stainless steel for accuracy and have a Melonite nitride finish for durability and corrosion resistance.

The new guns have short pistol-length gas systems along with heavy tungsten buffers. They also have full-auto-rated bolt carriers with a Melonite finish for increased reliability across the board. The guns have standard GI-style trigger but also feature an improved nickel-boron finish for a more consistent trigger pull regardless of conditions.

Springfield builds the pistols on forged 7075-T6 alloy receivers with a MIL-SPEC Type III anodized finish. With an unloaded mag the Saint pistol weighs only 5.8 pounds. It measures 26.5 inches long.

And while the Saint pistols are “optics ready” — they dont’t come with iron sights or other sighting accessories — they are affordable, with a $989 MSRP. If it’s anything like the Saint rifle it should list for around $800, which is nicely competitive with other quality production ARs today.

Some of these features, including the new handguard, are so nice, we hope to see them with other Springfield rifles and pistols down the line. This should be just the beginning.

I’m in looks like a truck gun and fun to shoot. Unfortunately not something you can shoot in public in California or supposed to own. Perfectly legit one state over in AZ. a gateway gun to owning a SBR.

Amazing how many trolls are commenting on this article. If you don’t want one don’t buy one. This type of firearm is great for home defense. Close range, thus pistol. Most bullets will fragment when going through barriers, making it safer for the neighbors. Unlike people using slugs in their shotgun or granddads old 30-06. I won’t apologize for better technology nor upgrades to past designs because you don’t like the look or have never used one. When aiming an ar pistol with a red dot and tactical light, I have a more compact profile than you locking your arms out with your .38 spl revolver. Low recoil, larger ammo capacity, ability to add accessories, tighter profile, and a ton of fun to shoot at the range give this type of pistol the advantage over some of the standard pistols of yesteryear. Grow up and come together instead of bashing something you don’t understand.
Sure the price is a little stiff, but you can shop around or try to put a similar one together with parts( You’ll get close to this price tag). A lot of small features with factory support is worth it. A Quality 1911 will set you back just as much if not more.
Thanks Guns America for showing us another new option for law abiding citizens.

Really…?, another AR pistol on the market…?
If you want a rifle, buy a rifle. If you want a pistol, buy a real pistol, nor a cut down version of a clumsy rifle, and for a thousand bucks…?,,Just Dumb… Springfield need to do some house cleaning in their marketing Dept.

Outstanding!!! Price is a bit high in my opinion but simply outstanding! I don\’t understand all the negative comments – if you don\’t want one, don\’t buy one. Remember the civilian semiauto FN M249? Same principle. This is the USA and we can make and buy such a thing (well, most of us) – be grateful! Ballistics, purpose, weight, size, why are these things such a big deal? It\’s a truck gun or maybe a close range varmint gun for some. Quit bitching. Geez…

    • Russ H. November 3, 2017, 7:39 pm

I\’ve found it for $793 online. Still a little pricey.

Probably fun to shoot and a fine firearm for what it is. I have to agree with others in that I find it difficult to call this a pistol. Yeah, I realize that it may be legally classified as a pistol, but I suspect that it isn’t to many, if not most. Don’t call a tulip a rose.

    • Richard Volta November 3, 2017, 6:09 pm

      Agree, 5.6 pound pistol????

  • Quite Gunner November 3, 2017, 1:33 pm

If we don’t ban the gun grabbing Dems, we will forever be known as the generation that let the corrupt, back room dealing politicians take away the last check and balance against government tyranny. If your state is pro Constitution write them on a post card and simply say that if they allow the obstructive Constitution shredding usurpors to ban our fire arms then we pressure our states to opt out. Dissolution of the compact. We’ve given up so many civil liberties that enough is enough. Whatever it takes,.

    • Dj Baccam May 25, 2020, 1:00 pm

Late comment response but its ridiculous you guys are complaining when if you have your way and classify it as a rifle then the states trying to ban “ar” rifles will have one more arm to take from us. So let it be classified as a pistol plus look at the velocity difference from a normal handgun and this pistol then tell me, “if you want a pistol buy a real pistol”

  • Oaf November 3, 2017, 11:50 am

Compact and light pistol? Really….compact pistol? Child please…..

  • Geoffrey Rhue November 3, 2017, 11:14 am

Heat a tease, another expensive toy I can own but not shoot in California .

    • Robert Roach November 3, 2017, 2:26 pm

      Leave California!

  • Larry November 3, 2017, 10:26 am

I think it’s really cool. Just to have something different, plus it’s nice and light.

  • Kevin November 3, 2017, 10:19 am

I second Cyrus…this is exactly what we don’t need…for civilian use. It just throws red meat to the liberal, gun grabbing Dems.
But then again, at this price, who would buy it?

  • Mahatma Muhjesbude November 3, 2017, 10:13 am

Well, after observing for years the evolution of ARs and using in actual combat most of the versions including carrying as primary the original ‘Shorty’ in Nam, (11,5 inch barrel) and then having fired extensively for testing virtually ALL other versions, over my professional life, i’ll feel obligated for the greater good to insert a bit of 2 cents worth of advice here.

While these can be ‘fun’, (subjectively speaking) for some, keep this 1st fact in the deepest cores of your frontal lobes. THE BALLSTICS AND POWER FACTOR OF A 7.5 INCH BARREL FIRING 5.56 ROUNDS ARE WOEFULLY DISMAL FOR OPTIMAL CQB in most modern situations.

I’m sure there are better ballistic experts out there than me who can go on and on about everything from ballistic co-efficiency deteriorating at distances far closer than from a 16 inch barrel along with faster bullet drop to deficient penetration requirements. functional reliability And so on. And of course when a so called rifle round is not even superior to a pistol round in the same platform, what is the point? Especially for price tag? And especially when you can have a compact ‘pistol’ with a 11.5 inch or even 14″ barrel that weighs only 6 pounds and would at least be then ‘adequate’ with some good 5.56 bullets.

I know, I know. It’s the Chairborne Ranger, Mall Marauder, coolness factor. And we’re still in fucking AMERICA, AIN’T WE! We can have what we want, still, can’t we?

Yes, I hope we can. In fact, today, along those lines I’m contacting my friends at the Rutherford Institute to see what we can do in terms of civil litigation to start challenging and repealing ALL gun laws, which are ALL unconstitutional to counter the OCD totalitarian traitors who are spending millions of leftist billionaire dollars to restrict us, while we are distracted with toys like this that we won’t be allowed to have if we don’t get moving against tyranny.

After all, you gotta start getting a little ‘askeeered’, when the nefarious nitwit commies in New Yorky start saying that they need more GUN control after the recent terrorist attack wasn’t even carrying a real gun but used one of the most dangerous of all weapons of mass destruction! The common Truck! A fact that was conveniently ignored at press conferences!

  • Ed November 3, 2017, 9:44 am

Will they offer just the upper?

  • Cyrus November 3, 2017, 9:00 am

Useless – just makes us look exactly like the way the Democrats view us!

  • Bob November 3, 2017, 8:55 am

I’m just not interested in an AR pistol chambered for .223 or any rifle caliber. Bring it to me in 9mm or 10mm and I might take a look but probably not at that asking price.

    • John Woods November 3, 2017, 11:59 am

      .44 mag would be nice.

  • Andrew November 3, 2017, 8:26 am

Great, now chamber it in .300 BLK so the ballistics don’t suck and I’ll buy one!

  • Bob Hollstein November 3, 2017, 8:26 am

Is the Saint Mass compliant ?

    • Scott Mahoney November 3, 2017, 3:06 pm

      Absolutely not

  • Jack D November 3, 2017, 7:38 am

Looks like a copy of SIG MPX.

    • steve harvey November 3, 2017, 4:25 pm

clearly an MPX copy. bastards with the AR pistols started copying the MPX back in like 2006. Sig should file a lawsuit. I mean, except that these guns have a completely different operating system, and they aren’t chambered in a pistol caliber, and they don’t have a proprietary magazine.

  • Chief November 3, 2017, 5:41 am

Unless the retail price is grossly inflated I don’t believe folks will be knocking the doors down to buy the
    at $989

    • Russ November 3, 2017, 9:11 am

Precisely &989 is way out there.
