Calling all hunters! While most of the hunting world is off thinking about whitetails in the fall, varmint and predator hunters are gearing up for an exciting summer. I decided to write this article in collaboration with our regular hunting contributor ThermaCELL Pro-Staffer Carlos Lopez, and our newest discovery, Dwayne Powell, who runs Kissimmee River Hunt and Fish in Okeechobee, Florida, to see if you guys would like to see a summer full of hunting here at GunsAmerica Magazine & Blog. Carlos and Dwayne are passionate hunters and hunt all year, and if we all would like them to share some of their summer experiences with us, they have agreed to put it together. Some folks would argue that hunting goes away until after the kids go back to school, but we disagree. Varmint and predator hunting is all year round, and even if you can’t get out this summer, there is a great deal of merit to keeping your head in the game.

Please comment on this article, like it on Facebook, and tweet it on Twitter if you feel like you’d like to see the tactics, the guns and gear in action that you will use this fall, or during the summer yourself. We know that summer can be busy with kids out of school, vacations, seasonal camping, and competition shooting, but please let yourself be heard if your summer needs some hunting in it. These guys are going to hunt. And if we can convince them to carry cameras, both still and video, and slow down enough to document the stuff they are actual doing, I think it would be a lot of fun. These are some of activities already happening at Kissimmee River Hunt and Fish, and that we can expect to see:

  • Spring and Summer Coyotes – Calling in coyotes when the woods are full of turkey poults, deer fawns, and every manner of other baby animal in the woods isn’t so easy, but the calves on the ranch are in serious danger, so hunt Dwayne and Carlos must, and kill Coyotes Dwayne and Carlos will.
  • Gators – The real kind, not the John Deere kind (though Dwayne does drive around the ranch in the latter). It takes some doing to get a survey from the state biologist to hunt gators, but if you are willing pay for it, you’ll be frying gator tail in no time. At some point this summer Dwayne will have a client book a gator hunt, probably more than one.
  • Hogs, hogs, hogs and more hogs – Dwayne is guiding on thousands of acres of private cattle ranch, plus tens of thousands of acres of public land. The hotter it gets the later the hogs come out, but night hunting is a blast. Dwayne also has three full-time feeders running, and the giant hog known as “Big Nasty” will meet his demise at the end of a rifle or bow this summer in the hands of one of Dwayne’s guests. Carlos also has a new Tenpoint Wicked Ridge Invader crossbow he is dying to try out on hogs. Fun stuff!
  • Bowfishing – Believe it or not, Carlos has been working on an article called “Bowfishing for Fitness.” He is a completely insane nut when it comes to hunting, and the way his mind works, any excuse to polish hunting skills and keep your head in the game is a good excuse. Oh, and at Kissimmee River with Dwayne, 10 pound bass come out of the water with frequent regularity.

Summer hunting is also nothing short of a wildlife tactical nuke adventure when you put aside the worries of daily life and explore the woods and pastures of old world Central Florida. On Dwayne’s private ranches we’ll see not just the next generation of game animals, but also endangered species and rarities to Florida, and nationwide. Check out the pictures we got in one day on just one of the three private ranches on which Dwayne guides.

So it is really up to us, to you actually, if you want to see Carlos and Dwayne in action this summer. Ambush Rifles, a Daniel Defense brand, and several other hunting gear companies have expressed interest in sponsoring this series, and getting the expenses paid is a big deal of any project. You will definitely like articles. Carlos has written for us for some time, and he is a great storyteller. If you comment and “Like” this article, Carlos will put the effort into documenting his and Dwayne’s summer exploits. Please let us know in the comments, and/or Facebook comments, and hopefully we’ll convince these guys to light it up for us. There is no reason to take your head out of hunting for the summer, even if you can’t pull yourself out of the pool to actually plunder some critters yourself. And who knows, maybe we’ll get you to put life on hold and get into the game this summer. It’s a blast.

Exotic hunting in Texas is year round. trophy axis have mature antlers in the summer, African species, aoudad, bison, hogs, Black Buck, Nilgai etc. The hunting opportunities never stop in central and south Texas. More and more summer sportsmen are discovering Texas every year.

  • wayne July 4, 2012, 11:31 am

BTW, we also saw a juvenile bald eagle on the dance in the morning, it was feeding on the hog back bones we put out the night before to attack the coyotes. Very cool I might add.

I want to say thank you to Guns America for providing a great article. After I red this I went to Dwayne’s website and looked it over very well. I google mapped it and found it was only 2.5 hours from home. I called up a couple buddy’s from all over the nation and 3 others heeded the call to hunt. There were 4 of us who made the trek there. 2 of us arrived at River Bluff and checked into our water front lodging on Saturday evening 6/30 and we met up Dwayne. I decided I wanted to go out coyote hunting last minute and thankfully Dwayne obliged. We headed out to the ranch and within the first 15 minutes of arriving we saw a 250-300 lb hog out in the field. My mind was on coyote so I left that one to continue on my quest for coyote.

1/2 an hour in I got my first chance while we were heading to the blind. The coyote was at the limit of the laser designator that Dwayne provide so I lined up and took 2 shots, thump not he second told me that he was running no more. We motored over and found a ditch 3′ full of water where I believe I popped him. So no recovery, no proof, not counted as a kill in my book. Saw 3 more with a couple of looonnnnggg distance shots with no joy. #5 proved to be the pudding, bam, thump, and he ran no more. When we got up to him his entrails were laying beside him. (You can see him on the “more pictures” page on kissimee hunt & fish website near the bottom)

Next day 2 guys went fishing in the morning and caught over 15 nice large mouth bass where the caught & released by choice.

In the late morning 2 of us went out to the ranch to see if we could recover the first coyote I shot (at) but no luck. As we were tooling around the ranch and Dwayne was showing Guillermo where he was going to sit that night, I saw some brush moving about 30 yards away but couldn’t see the animal so Guillermo went up into the stand but he couldn’t get a good look at him either. This being a working ranch, it could have been a calf. Guillermo came down off the stand and he and Dwayne went to flank the beast…… about 5 minutes of silence and bam, bam and at least 2 hogs run right by my line of site (I had no rifle or pistol with me as I thought it would be just a quick run out there, never again will I make that mistake) I rounded the hammock where I saw Dwayne and Guillermo looking down at 2 dead hogs, one 240 lb sow and one 90 lb piglet (you can see the pics of these not he same page as my coyote).

That evening all 4 of us, Dwayne & Paul from G.A. went out for hogs and coyote. We were all skunked that night, we heard a could coyotes hoot behind us but they didn’t want to come in to the dieing pig call, we set out the backstraps of the hogs we killed in the afternoon.

We will definitely be back. We saw a lot of nature out there and had a great time. Dwayne knows his business and is full of energy. I believe he gets even more excited when the hunter downs an animal than the hunter himself.

I can’t wait to go back, next time I will be bringing my 6.5 yr old son (who was extremely angry that I killed a coyote without him).

I just spent last Saturday and Sunday out there after reading about them in Guns of America and it is every thing they say it is and more. After only being there a few hours I felt like family.
Going out on the ranch to hunt is incredable. You can drive across the state but untilyou go back into those ranches along the river and the parks you have never seen Florida like this.
I had the opportunity to take down the biggest bore I have ever seen and chose not to because I was not going to have it mounted and they are no good to eat. I thought it best to leave this trophy for someone who wanted to put him on a wall. While we were sitting up in the stand I got to hear him tear up another bore and then he came back to the feeder Dwayne turned on the light and this thing looked like a refrigerator laying on it’s side.
As long as he was there not going to be any other hogs coming in so we went back to the house for a great steak dinner and they brought me back to the Bluff RV Park where I was staying.
The next morning we were out after the coyotes and Dwayne and Carlos got everything set up. They started a new electronic caller that sounded like a wounded fawn and what a sight to see, two does came in clearing fences by four feet and I thought they were going to stomp that caller to pieces.
I thought it was amazing that every time they would loose interest Dewayne would hit the button for the caller and these deer where jumping around like jack rabbits.
A coyote came in and circled around and got down wind of us but stayed in the palmettos where we couldn’t get a shot. We moved to four locations, the scenery was incredable, the history was amazing and at the last set up another coyote was coming down the fence line and the wind switched and came behind us and he stopped dead in his tracks and then split off into the palmettos. The gun they provided me with would have made it easy for me to make a 300 to 500 yard shot. I have never seen an AR15 tricked out like this, it had a sniper scope and a bipod in the front, when we went back to the house they had a range set up and Dwayne let me see what this thing could do. They had another 2230 with open sites that really shot well too. I am going back in July.
Dwayne, Linda and the whole crew were great. Even if you don’t get a shot you will find old Florida a beautiful place.

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 30, 2012, 9:53 am

      Hi Gary,

It was a pleasure to meet you and share a few ground blinds with you at KRHF. Dwayne and all of us have a lot of respect for you after you passed up shooting 3-4 trophy boars from 200 lbs to 300 lbs, including “Big Nasty” which is hovering around 400 lbs and has big cutters. You would rather see another lucky hunter take that trophy boar and honor it by mounting it on a wall!! Very admirable!

We are also glad that you were able to check out some of the cool new gear that we were testing out and hopefully we all can hook up again at KRHF in the future. You are definetly right about seeing an untouched Florida landscape that few get to experience. Hope you enjoy the wild hog sausage and good luck when you go back in July.

      Carlos….

I’m in agreeance with you. I’t is a Bald eagle. Anyway I’m from Pensacola, FL and live in San Angelo, Tx. We hunt coyote, fox, bobcat, and lots of hog. Them damn things are all over the place. They’re even here in town. It’s too bad I have a job. I would love to hunt them full time. They are hard to hunt since they are so elusive. I think I have a handle on them. I’ve put out a 55 gal. plastic drum fastened to a chain and other end fastened to a rebar stake. I drilled holes in the barrel and put corn in the barrel with strawberry koolaid. Had alot of good results with this setup and it seems to hold the hogs in the area. It’s kind of cool to sit and watch them for awhile beating the barrel up trying to gret the corn out. Something you might want to try. Good luck.

    • Administrator May 23, 2012, 9:44 am

So you don’t let them eat the corn? Do you make the coolaid or just use the powder?

  • scott May 17, 2012, 5:51 pm

    please reply, thanks , slm

  • BT May 16, 2012, 1:57 pm

Just wanted to clarify. While there are bald eagles in Okeechobee, the picture you have posted is an Osprey.

    • Administrator May 16, 2012, 3:29 pm

No it isn’t. It is in fact a bald eagle.

      • Carlos M. Lopez May 24, 2012, 10:51 pm

I was there when the photo was taken and it was indeed a juvenile bald eagle.

Loved the article. I live in Western Colorado where we do most of our ‘yote hunting in winter due to the fact the pelt is much higher quality then. What do you do with your pelts in the summer?

interested in waterfowl & DOVE, had a friend hunt the big lake O. said they use something like the old school & outlawed sunken battery blinds…??? any info on that & do you hunt (guide) lake O. or what? Prices ,dates, ducks etc. appreciated. like to talk to the Chesapeake bay guy. thanks SLM…

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 8:44 pm

      Hi Scott,

The dove and waterowl hunts are a new addition for Kissimmee River Hunt & Fish because of customer demand and will be conducted for the first time this Fall of 2012.

Not sure about outlawed sunken battery blinds? First time I heard about that. Car batteries in the water…that can’t be good anywhere!

Guide Dwayne will have the 40 acre dove field ready and the adjacent fields will be flooded way before the early 4 day FL waterfowl season for Teal and Wood Duck in mid to late September 2012. The dove hunts start in early October 2012. The 2012-2013 Migratory Bird Regulations dates have yet to be determined. I recommend booking early !!!

You can check on http://www.myfwc.com to learn more about the FL waterfowl season and Federal Regs. We have some awesome duck hunting in FL…and it is our little secret.

      Only tell your best buddies,

      Carlos…….

      • scott May 16, 2012, 5:27 pm

        Carlos,
sorry for the confusion, the blinds i refer to are a.k.a.” sink boxes ” a facinating & effective part of our waterfowl history. (Google it) A friend hunted Lake O. & said they used something similar?? Maybe a” curtain blind “. know anyone who guides Lake O..?? & as requested before do your guys??
        Also again prices & dates,,
        dove & duck
P.S. how can I reach BillTeat, chesapeake bay guy???
        Thank you, SLM

          Scott,

I checked it out on Google. As for Guiding Big O…that is something that has yet to be determined. It may boil down to demand. The prices are being worked out as per Dwayne and he is waiting for the FL Waterfowl Regs to be announced. As for Bill T…I cannot help you.
          Regards,
          Carlos….

  • David F. Fowler May 14, 2012, 10:49 am

I do more hunting in the off season that during. I go to Africa and do cull and predator hunts. The ranch owner lets me stay for free as long as I take out monkeys, baboons, jackels, lynx and even lizards 4 feet long. It is great fun but the boons get smart after they loose their lookouts to the .223 WSSM several times. You can make some really long shots and took one baboon at a little over 500 yards. I stayed a little over 3 months last year and will do it again this year. We took out 25 springboc in one days cull hunting. Great fun making those 300 + yard shots. I always enjoy seeing a coyote fall they kill everything.
    David Fowler

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 7:25 pm

      Hi David,

Sounds like you have a sweet deal as long as you can get yourself to Africa and you bring plenty of ammo. (Hopefully it is Hornady ammo…just kidding)

You sound more like a predator sniper and long successful shots are always a blast!

Send us at GunsAmerica some of your Africa pictures….we would love to see them.

      Shoot straight,

      Carlos……..

My wife and I have a small ranch in South Central TX, near the border with Mexico. We have Bobcat, Coyote, and now Hogs. I carry a 30-06 with me when we go out to tend to our place, never know what you will run into out there. Of course we also have our Rattlesnake and other types of poisonous snakes so carry a .410 as well. Would love to see more articles of this type. Any tips greatly appreciated.

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 6:48 pm

      Hi John,

On private property we can hunt hogs and coyotes all year lonf in Florida. We have a 4 month season for Bobcat that usually runs from Dec. 1st till March 1st of the following year.

We are going to hunt them all with rifles, crossbow, muzzleloader, bow & arrow etc…whatever else we can think of and possibly write about it plus include a lot of photos. Hopefully we will be able to test out a bunch of new outdoor products and review them for all of you to read in future articles.

I am a very active preditor hunter/trapper 40 yrs exp.-however i dont start hunting fox/coyote till sept, the thought of leaving a den full of pups to starve,is a dishonor to the sport, have a little coot! spring and summer months are for preditors/deer/quail ect to raise there young, try doing what I do in spring and summer GO FISHING!!!!

  • Bill Teat May 14, 2012, 6:44 am

Great article, would really enjoy a series like this. I just moved to the area (about 30 mi. from Okeechobe) and am very interested in varmit hunting. I used to guide waterfowl hunting on the chesapeake bay for years. looks like lake Okeechobe might be a candidate

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 11:59 am

      Hi Bill,

I am glad that you enjoyed our article and within only a week the response has been more than we had expected! (280 Facebook “Likes” and over 4000 reads) It looks like we are going to move forward and do this and other series. We have more hunts planned at different ranches. Check out Guide Dwayne Powell’s website : http://www.kissimmeeriverhuntandfish.com

Dwayne will also be offering dove an duck hunting beginning this Fall 2012. There is a 40 acre planted dove field and the land near it will be flooded. I did a three day duck hunting trip and it definitely was a blast!!

Welcome to the area and I hope to run into you on the trail,

      Carlos M. Lopez

      Hi Ed,

No problem if you do not use FB or Twitter. A lot of people do not. Just keep checking GunsAmerica and we will keep cranking out FREE articles that range from hunting, product reviews, new products, tips, from shooting guns/rifles to collecting etc.

We are in the process of using new industry products that will help us take out coyotes, hogs, raccoons etc., at night in total darkness which will probably interest you. Exciting stuff coming soon!!

Glad you left a good comment,

      Carlos M. Lopez

  • Danny Davis May 14, 2012, 5:52 am

Great idea! I’d love to see more of the summer predator hunting articles.

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 12:22 pm

      Hello Danny,

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment and we are glad that you guys want to see more FREE online articles from GunsAmerica!! The response has been great and it looks like we are going to keep hunting and writing.

Looks like I may have to routinely recruit the help of my friend Hunter’s Specialties Field Staffer William Sullivan who hooked us all up with Dwayne from Kissimmee River Hunt & Fish last year. Hopefully our schedules can match up.

Keep checking GunsAmerica online Magazine & Blog,

I love predator hunting, however I’m pretty new at it. You have any tips or know of some good spots in southern NM or West Texas?

  • Robert A. Chencinski May 12, 2012, 6:58 am

What an awesome article guys! Paul and Dwayne – if you 2 are just as passionate and enthusiastic as Carlos is about hunting and the outdoors, then I’m sure you are just as “stand up” as he is as well! Carlos and I have been hunting for over 15 years and I can certainly vouch that he is a much better shot than I. I usually take on the role as camp cook which I have no problem in assuming. Carlos is a wonderful friend and even more awesome as a brother-in-law. I am very proud of him as he as pursued his career in something he loves to do and not many people can say that. I hope I get the opportunity to hunt or cook with you all sometime soon Enjoy the good times!
    Robert

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 9:22 pm

      Rob…

Thanks for the kind words man…but people may say that you are biased because you are my Bro in law.

I can say…that you are…an excellent camp cook but a very lousy shot!! lol

Anyhow, you know that I will keep you posted.

      Carlos……

      • Loyd Godley May 14, 2012, 1:51 pm

Do you consider the Ruger 204 adequate for coyotes? If yes, to what range.

        Thanks,

        Loyd

        • Administrator May 14, 2012, 2:00 pm

It certainly has been used for coyotes but we don’t have one yet. The problem with coyotes is that they are very shy and you really need ballistics out to 300 yards.

  • dan May 10, 2012, 11:52 am

    looks like a good time

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 12:37 pm

      Dan,

It is awesome! Just riding around the ranches with Guide Dwayne in the Gator looking at all the wildlife is such a privilege and so rewarding. There is such an abundance of different wild animals that it leaves you in awe!!

Used to woodchuck (groundhog) hunt every day. Unfortunately, all the farms have been sold for housing tracts.

    • Administrator May 9, 2012, 7:32 pm

Move to Florida! All you have to worry about is Monsanto here.

    • Carlos M. Lopez May 14, 2012, 8:50 pm

      J.Ed…
