Best Night Sights for Handguns (2026): Tritium Picks

in Authors, Columns, Concealed Carry/EDC

The best night sights of 2026 solve a simple problem: most defensive shootings happen in low light, and black sights on a black gun disappear in the dark. Tritium night sights glow on their own, no flashlight or sunlight needed, so you can find your front sight in a dark bedroom or a dim parking lot. Modern designs also add bright orange or green rings so they pop in daylight, too.

If you carry a handgun for defense and it wears plastic factory sights, night sights are one of the cheapest upgrades that make a real difference. Even if your pistol came with tritium, the vials dim over roughly 10 to 12 years, so an older set may be due for replacement. When Mark Kakkuri wrote the first version of this guide in 2018, he picked his top five sets for the Glock 19. We kept his picks and added the sights our writers have installed and carried since.

Picks with a GunsAmerica Digest review link to it, and the rest come from our original author’s experience. Most of these sights are made for many pistols, not just Glocks, so check fit for your model. Prices are listed as they were at the time of review.

Start with the buyer’s guide, then find the night sights that fit your pistol and your eyes.

Buyer’s Guide: How To Choose The Best Night Sights For Handguns In 2026

Choosing the best night sights comes down to sight picture, daylight visibility, durability, and fit. Here is what matters.

Three-Dot, Big Dot, Or Front Only

Classic three-dot tritium sights put a glowing dot in the front and two in the rear. Big dot designs pair a huge front dot with a shallow V rear for speed at close range, trading some precision. Front-only tritium sets keep the rear plain, which some shooters find faster because the eye goes straight to the front sight. Try a friend’s gun or a store display before you commit.

Daylight Visibility

Tritium is hard to see in daylight. Sights with a bright orange, yellow, or green ring around the front vial, or a fiber optic element, are easy to pick up in sunlight and still glow at night. For most defensive shooters, a high-visibility front ring is worth having.

Front Sight Width

A wider front post is faster to find. A narrower post leaves more light on either side in the rear notch, which allows more precise shots at distance. Trijicon’s HD XR, for example, slimmed its front post compared with the original HD for more precision.

Durability And Warranty

Look for tritium vials encased in metal and cushioned against recoil, and a warranty that covers illumination. Many makers offer 10 to 12 years. Mark the purchase date somewhere, because all tritium fades with time.

Fit And Installation

Night sights are made for specific pistols and dovetail cuts. If your pistol carries a suppressor or red dot, you may need taller sights. Installation usually requires a sight pusher. Our writers warn against using a hammer and punch on a carry gun, and many gun shops will install sights for a small fee.

Budget

Quality tritium sets ranged from about $54 to $186 at the time of our reviews. Spending more often buys a high-visibility front ring and better durability, but even a budget front-only tritium sight is a big step up from plastic.

Best Night Sights For Handguns Ranked: 2026 Product Roundup

Trijicon HD XR: Best for Overall Night Sights (2026)

Our reviewer had carried Trijicon’s original HD night sights on his customized M&P9 for two years before trying the HD XR. The HD design gives you three tritium dots like a conventional set, but the front dot is surrounded by a large orange or yellow ring, so in daylight it works like a high-visibility big dot. The rear has a U-notch with black-ringed dots to keep your focus on the front, plus a flat forward face for one-handed racking.

Read our full Trijicon HD XR review here.

The XR’s change is a thinner front post, rated at .122 inch versus .150 for the original HD, which leaves more daylight on either side for precise shots. He measured about .127 and found the narrower post had no effect on fast, close-range shooting. The tritium lamps sit in aluminum cylinders with rubber cushioning. MSRP was $175 at the time of the 2017 review. Another writer later installed a set on a custom Glock, where they ran about $120 at the time.

Key Specs

  • Type: Three-dot tritium with high-visibility front ring
  • Front: About .122 inch post, orange or yellow ring
  • Rear: U-notch, black-ringed tritium dots, racking ledge
  • Lamps: Aluminum housed, rubber cushioned
  • MSRP: $175 at time of review

Pros

  • Great day and night
  • Precise narrow front post
  • One-hand racking ledge
  • Trijicon durability

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Thinner post is slightly slower for some eyes

XS F8 Night Sights: Best for Fast Figure 8 Sight Picture (2026)

XS is famous for its big dot sights, and the F8 offers a different take. The front has a massive orange ring around a bright tritium dot, perfect for daytime, with a smaller tritium dot in the rear. You stack the dots in a figure 8, and our reviewer found it lines up quickly even in no light. The wide rear notch helps you acquire the sights fast from the draw.

He installed them on his Glock 20. To fit the rear, you slowly file down its height until it slides into place, and XS includes everything you need, including thread locker and a front sight tool. XS Big Dot And DXT2 PRO: Best for Fastest Close-Range Night Sights (2026)

The XS Big Dot looks a bit odd, with a very large round front and an incredibly shallow rear V. You drop the big dot into the V, or on top of the rear stripe like a lollipop, and shoot. Our reviewer, who put a set on a budget SCCY test gun, admitted it might not be the most precise method, but said you cannot deny it is fast, and the huge glowing front is very fast in the dark. Out of the box, he called Big Dots very hard to beat at defensive ranges.

Read our full XS Big Dot test here.

In 2024 XS introduced the DXT2 PRO Series, which upgrades the tritium lamps, adds a BlackNitride finish for durability and corrosion resistance, and offers the first Big Dot with a green glow front, with a 0.188 inch front dot. XS backs its tritium with a 12-year illumination warranty per our coverage. The DXT2 PRO retailed for $153.99 at the time of our 2024 coverage.

Key Specs

  • Type: Big dot tritium front, shallow V rear
  • Front Dot: 0.188 inch (DXT2 PRO)
  • Finish: BlackNitride (DXT2 PRO)
  • Warranty: 12-year illumination per XS
  • Price: $153.99 for DXT2 PRO at time of review

Pros

  • Extremely fast up close
  • Huge glowing front
  • Durable PRO version

Cons

  • Less precise at distance
  • Unusual sight picture

XS Minimalist: Best for Budget Tritium Sights (2026)

Our reviewer had wanted this sight for a very long time. The XS Minimalist puts tritium only in the front, surrounded by an extremely bright orange ring, with a plain black rear. He argued there is little difference in practice between a glowing front alone and a full three-dot set, because the most important jobs of a glowing front are finding your gun in the dark and seeing your sight in low light.

Read our full XS Minimalist test here.

On his test gun the front was the same width as factory, while the rear notch was slightly wider, giving more light around the front post, which he found faster for snapshots. The kicker is price. At $54 at the time of the 2022 review, it cost the same as or less than many fiber optic or plain steel sets, which he said drastically changes the argument for leaving a carry gun without night sights.

Key Specs

  • Type: Front-only tritium
  • Front: Tritium with bright orange ring
  • Rear: Plain black, slightly wider notch
  • Fit: Wide range of pistols
  • Price: $54 at time of review

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Bright daylight ring
  • Faster wide rear notch

Cons

  • No glowing rear
  • Less help for long shots in the dark

Truglo TFX Pro: Best for Tritium And Fiber Optic Day/Night Sights (2026)

Truglo’s TFX sights combine tritium with fiber optics, so they gather daylight and glow brightly in the sun, then rely on tritium in the dark, giving nearly the same sight picture in any light. Our original author ran several Truglo sets on his Glock 19 and found every one excellent. The TFX Pro adds a U-shaped rear channel for fast acquisition and an angled rear for racking the slide one-handed. It retailed for $186 at the time of the original 2018 guide.

Read our full Truglo TFX review here.

A second reviewer put TFX sights on his XD-S and liked that they are big and that the tritium vials are encased in steel so they cannot fall out. The rear floats slightly in the dovetail and locks with a set screw, and he warned against installing with a punch and hammer. He measured no extra radiation from the tiny vials. They sold for about $127 online at the time of his 2015 review.

Key Specs

  • Type: Tritium plus fiber optic
  • Rear (Pro): U-shaped channel, racking edge
  • Vials: Encased in steel
  • Install: Sight pusher recommended
  • Price: $186 (TFX Pro, 2018) at time of review

Pros

  • Bright in daylight and dark
  • Durable steel housings
  • Racking edge on Pro

Cons

  • Pricier than most
  • Fiber optics can be fragile
  • Older reviews

Trijicon Bright And Tough: Best for Classic Three-Dot Night Sights (2026)

Trijicon’s Bright and Tough line takes a standard three-dot tritium setup and makes it brighter by capping each lamp with a sapphire jewel, which spreads the light evenly. It makes them tougher by housing the lamps in aluminum cylinders mounted in silicone rubber cushions, protecting them against solvents, shock, and heavy recoil.

Our original author had used Trijicon tritium sights, though not this exact version, and was impressed with their brightness and durability. Green lamps came with a 12-year warranty from date of manufacture. They retailed for $125 for a Glock set at the time of the 2018 guide. If you want a traditional three-dot sight picture from a proven name, these are the standard.

Key Specs

  • Type: Three-dot tritium
  • Lamps: Sapphire capped, aluminum housed, cushioned
  • Warranty: 12 years on green lamps (2018)
  • Fit: Many pistols
  • Price: $125 for Glock at time of original guide

Pros

  • Proven durability
  • Even, bright glow
  • Long warranty

Cons

  • Less visible in daylight than ringed sights
  • No standalone Digest review

Ameriglo Classic Tritium: Best for Value Three-Dot Set (2026)

Ameriglo’s Classic set is a typical three-dot tritium setup with a white-outlined green dot in the front and two in the rear. In normal light you see more white than green, and as light fades the green dots stand out. Tall versions are available for pistols with a suppressor or optic, and Ameriglo offers several rear variants, from plain blades to a ghost ring.

Our original author had used Ameriglo night sights and said they are virtually as good, meaning as visible, durable, and stable, as the night sights that come from the Glock factory. They retailed for $99 for a Glock set at the time of the 2018 guide, making them one of the better values here.

Key Specs

  • Type: Three-dot tritium, white outlines
  • Options: Tall suppressor height, rear variants
  • Fit: Many pistols
  • Price: $99 for Glock at time of original guide

Pros

  • Good value
  • Suppressor height option
  • Proven design

Cons

  • Basic daylight visibility
  • No standalone Digest review

Meprolight TruDot: Best for Lowest-Cost Classic Set (2026)

The Meprolight TruDot was the lowest-priced set in our original guide, which called it a tremendous value. Like the Trijicon sights, it carried a 12-year warranty, though only for the original purchaser. Meprolight claims unequaled low-light performance, and while our author could not measure relative brightness, he said they are bright and work well.

Read our hands-on with Meprolight Tru-Dot night sights on the HK VP9 here.

They retailed for $72.80 for a Glock set at the time of the 2018 guide. If you want three-dot tritium from an established maker and do not need a daylight ring, the TruDot is a solid budget choice. Meprolight has since released other low-light designs, including a lines-instead-of-dots set our writer liked in the dark but found less easy in bright daylight.

Key Specs

  • Type: Three-dot tritium
  • Warranty: 12 years, original purchaser (2018)
  • Fit: Many pistols
  • Price: $72.80 for Glock at time of original guide

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Bright
  • Long warranty

Cons

  • No daylight ring
  • Our hands-on dates to 2015

Final Thoughts On The Best Night Sights For Handguns Of 2026

For most carry pistols, the Trijicon HD XR is the best night sight we have tested, giving you a high-visibility front for daylight, three tritium dots for the dark, and a narrow post for precision. If speed is your priority, the XS F8 and Big Dot are hard to beat, and the XS Minimalist is the budget pick that removes any excuse for plastic sights. The Truglo TFX Pro, Trijicon Bright and Tough, Ameriglo Classic, and Meprolight TruDot round out the field with proven designs at different prices.

Whatever you choose, have them installed properly, confirm your zero, and note the date so you know when the tritium will start to fade. Thinking about adding a laser too? Tru dot with two orange on the rear sight and green upfront help my old eyes aquire the target quickly. I’ve had everyone of these sights on several of my firearms. For the price, Tru dot has a really quality product and beats out all of the others.
