WATCH: New Dashcam Video of Philando Castile Killing Released

Authors Current Events Jordan Michaels

Days after Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez was acquitted of all charges in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile, authorities have released the dashcam video from Officer Yanez’s police cruiser. While millions have seen the aftermath of the shooting in a video taken by Castile’s girlfriend, this video provides the first public glimpse into the moments before the shooting as well the shooting itself.

Jurors saw this video several times during the course of Yanez’s trial, but until now it has not been shown outside the courtroom, according to a report from the New York Times. The jury acquitted Yanez of both second-degree manslaughter and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Yanez approaches Castile’s vehicle and explains that he pulled Castile over due to a broken taillight, which can be seen in the video. During the trial, Yanez said that he also believed Castile to match the description of a robbery suspect from several days earlier.

Yanez asks for Castile’s license and insurance, and Castile hands Yanez a piece of paper.

“Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me,” Castile says as Yanez hands the paper back to Castile.

At the word “firearm,” Yanez’s hand moves towards his pistol, and he says, “Ok, don’t reach for it, though, don’t pull it out.”

Castile can be heard protesting, and he seems to say, “I don’t have to reach for it.”

Yanez repeats his instruction, “Don’t pull it out,” as he draws his sidearm. Yanez told investigators that he saw Castile “reaching down between his right leg, his right thigh area and the center console.”

“It appeared to me that he had no regard to what I was saying,” Yanez continued, according to recently released transcripts of the investigation into the shooting. “He didn’t care what I was saying. He still reached down. … And, at that point I, was scared and I was, in fear for my life and my partner’s life.”

In the video, Yanez draws his firearm after repeating his instruction the second time and fires seven shots into the car.

“Don’t pull it out! Don’t move!” Yanez repeats.

Yanez begins to become emotional immediately following the shooting. He yells “fuck!” several times, telling Castile’s girlfriend, “I told him not to reach for it! I told him to get his [unclear] open!”

Castile’s girlfriend can be heard in the background taking her now-infamous Facebook live video of the incident.

Yanez keeps his handgun pointed at Castile until other officers arrive and begin to administer CPR on the street.

At the end of the video, Yanez can be heard talking to the other officers.

“He had his grip a lot wider than a wallet, and I don’t know where the gun was. He didn’t tell me where the fuckin’ gun was,” Yanez said. “He was just staring straight ahead and I was gettin’ fuckin’ nervous and then I told him…I know fuckin’ I told him to get his fuckin’ hand off his gun.”

Yanez’s acquittal has sparked protests and riots nationwide.

If people who are pulled over, especially in high crime areas, would remember to do EXACTLY what the officer tells them to do, when he tells them to do it, and not get an attitude, a lot of these shootings would not be happening. If you wish to explain to the officer what happened, fine, but do it in a polite, non-confrontational manner. If you disagree, the place to argue is in court. Arguing will not get you out of a ticket. In fact, in my time as a Deputy Sheriff, I never stopped someone unless I had probable cause to do so. If someone became abusive or disrespectful, they were cited. If cooperative, I could write the cite for a lesser offense, like 44 in a 35, so they wouldn’t lose their license, like if I wrote it for their real speed, and pay more for the fine. The objective was to gain compliance with the law, not fleece them for money. A good attitude went a long way.
On another note, if you have a CCW permit, verbalize you have a CCW permit and a weapon. Do not say the word GUN. Cops in metro areas (in particular) may be triggered by the word. Do exactly as you are told. Act as if your life depends on it. It may

  • alex June 26, 2017, 10:43 pm

everything I’ve read or watched on conceal carry says this, inform the cop you are a licensed conceal carry and DON’T F’ING MOVE!!!!wait for him to tell you what to do,if this man had done this he would probably still be alive.

  • Shannon Macdonald June 26, 2017, 9:10 am

I think the officer did panic but I know as a person who has a ccp that you do not tell a cop you have a gun and then move your hands. What I think allot of people did not talk about was how quickly the girlfriend had her phone out and was filming. If that was someone I loved I would try to save them not film their death. She was a real winner she did not even sound upset until they took her phone away then she started to wail to Facebook “they threw my phone facebook” .

  • Chuck June 26, 2017, 8:16 am

I have been pulled over twice since I started legal permit carry in my state 30 years ago. BEFORE the officer gets to my car, I quickly take my Glock, still in it’s waist clip holster, and place it on top of my roof above me… I then get out my ID’s and have them in hand with my hands out of the drivers window waiting for the officer, and say “hello officer, here is my legal permit to carry, there are no other weapons in the vehicle”… I also happen to be white and a senior citizen…
Was the jury shown the dashcam video at the trial…??? If they were not, the decision of the jury may have been different. The cop never saw the gun. He shot first, and asked questions later…

It is not unusal for a black man to be killed by a police Officer and Black citizens know this. The Police Officer is the man in charge of the situation, do nothing but what he tells you, if not, you have set yourself up to be killed. We expect the Officers to respect our rights but to some Officers you have no right. I would rather give up my rights then to be right and dead. Some people think different and sometimes we have to give a lot to keep a lot. Officers would love to go home too, i got to accept a lot of things the easier i accept thing the better they will be. Both men family was effected by both of these men decision

  • Dillon G June 25, 2017, 2:17 pm

    Hmm, pretty obvious murder.

    • Lloyd June 26, 2017, 5:44 am

Police have a double standard that we must learn to live with or die by. I am just trying to be honest and not finger pointing but when a white man is pulled over there is a different degrees of trust.

  • Leroy R Snyder June 25, 2017, 7:06 am

Glad to see so many “experts” here on the subject. From shooting too many times, to how and when an officer shot fear for his life. None of you know what it takes to be a cop, because you aren’t one. You’re a bunch of armchair refs. There are bad good, like their are bad people, but I’m sorry, in this situation is have done the same. You can’t just reach right after telling a cop that you have a gun. When you carry, you have a responsibility to be smarter than those around you. Always keep your hands where they can be seen. If I don’t know you from Adam, no matter your color or race, I don’t trust you. Don’t say that you have a weapon, then start playing grab was with yourself. Idk where your gun is, where your hand is, or what your intentions are. By the way, I’m not a cop either. I’m a firefighter, and my brothers and sister are getting killed our there frequently. They aren’t carrying for their own protection and showing up to help people that end up doing them harm. You want to change things? It’s starts at home. Teach your kids some common sense. Teach each other to love and respect each other. Until everyone stops acting to damn crazy this shit will keep happening. This includes not videoing shit when things go south. No compassion at all.

    • Frank Staples July 3, 2017, 9:55 pm

Funny thing, Leroy, I’m also a firefighter…and damned if I know where all these firemen are getting killed that you’re talking about. That cop was a wuss and it cost a life and he should have been charged with it. He should never be in a position of carrying a firearm again. Just my honest opinion, of course.

      • mark shetterly April 6, 2020, 6:40 pm

He was charged… And then acquitted by a jury.

    • RJB February 27, 2018, 7:37 pm

I agree so much about it starting at home. We do not discipline our children to be responsible for crimes they commit. I’m not commenting on color, I’m saying our children are not being held to the same standards they should be. Things are only going to get worse. When we took Christ out of schools that was a blow. We didn’t want to offend anyone !!! Sad

  • Michael Salzbrenner June 25, 2017, 3:27 am

I’ve watched both videos. I’m confident, anyone NOT wearing a badge performing in this same manner, would have been burned at the stake. The only reason this individual was acquitted is because he is a law enforcement officer. Call me whatever you wish, but if it comes time to for me to defend myself, would I get away with “reaching down between his right leg, his right thigh area and the center console.” as justifiable reason to fear for my life? Would that be enough justification for anyone other than a police officer? If I tried to use that defense in court the prosecuting attorney would crucify me, and I would get max sentence. The double standards must stop.

    • renny June 25, 2017, 10:15 pm

I agree 100 percent they should be held to a higher standard than civilians because they have, or should have had a lot of training, instean they are held to a MUCH lower standard

  • Lanre June 24, 2017, 5:52 pm

    Some cops are bitches.

    • LJ June 29, 2017, 10:50 am

You’re absolutely right Lanre, I saw a K9 ‘cop’ jump out of the back of a ‘cop’ car the other day and she appeared to be a ‘bitches’. My thoughts were confirmed when that ‘bitches’ squatted and urinated.

  • Jorge Garcia June 24, 2017, 2:12 pm

In my honest opinion this individual got shot because of his ignorance, that being said this officer has no right to carry a gun and God help the honest citizen this officer is sent out to defend in a situation where gunfire is unavoidable, it’s as clear as daylight to me that this officer should be on desk duty and be relieved of his weapons for his own safety and that of his family and fellow citizens. 7 shots into an automobile where innocent children are occupying is ludicrous

  • Bu June 24, 2017, 9:04 am

If people would just keep their hands on the steering wheel until instructed to do otherwise and not take it upon themselves to do things ahead of the officers approval, then most of these shootings would not occur..I think some of the officers are too nervous or fearful to be doing this job..No one should be getting shot until a gun comes into view.If officers think that someone can be shot every time they get nervous then we’ve become no better than a war zone in our thinking..They need more training..They are paid to do better than they are doing..Anyone can shoot someone, but only a rare few can be a good police officer.. .Unfortunately drinking and carrying illegal handguns does not help the problem..

  • Darryl June 24, 2017, 12:46 am

when the guy told the cop he had a gun i don’t read anywhere that he said i have a permit? plus you have to keep your hands up where the cop can see them and let him/her tell what they want you to do next. i have a gun and reaching for it will get you shot most times i think anyway. not saying ever thing the cop did was ok or not but there have been a lot of them getting shot and killed lately so that makes it even more important that you don’t just do what ever you want when you have a gun and permit.

like said i wasn’t in the court or at the place this happened so my comment doesn’t mean much just know that if pulled over and you have your gun and permit to carry you don’t move till the cop tells you when and where to move. one of the first things i learned after getting my permit 20 years ago.

  • Jeff June 23, 2017, 9:31 pm

OK, Well the whole thing stinks. This guy will have PTSD for sure. We were taught in CC class you state ” I HAVE MY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT AND THERE ARE WEAPONS IN THE VEHICLE” and remain still and wait for instructions from the officer. The guy said he had a firearm. If he would have not moved his hands and stated what we were taught ( a non- escalating statement) he would more than likely be alive today. Now I know the guy being pulled was nervous as well and the whole thing is tragic. Its almost a case of both being at fault but the guy should have instantly ceased ANY movement at the cops first request. I have been pulled before and NEVER had an issue other than politeness from the cop telling me he appreciated me letting him know. It sometime is all in HOW you say and deliver things.

  • Dan June 23, 2017, 8:08 pm

What no one seems to be mentioning, including the media, is that this individual was high on marijuana. This negated his right to have a firearm, ccw permit or not. I am a ccw permit holder in Minnesota and such have no right to carry my firearm while under the influence of alcohol or any other drug. Smoking marijuana, illegal, driving a car under the influence, illegal, carrying a firearm while under the influence, illegal, driving a car with a child and other passenger in it also illegal. If this is what some people call a “good man” I’d hate to see what they call a bad man. In the end the man had no right to have a gun with him especially loaded and concealed on him. Had he not chosen to beak these laws none of this would have happened.

    • Jimmy June 24, 2017, 10:35 am

So what if he was high. A bad man is someone is kills someone without cause. He was following the officers order to get his license.

    • Lanre June 24, 2017, 5:53 pm

I do you know he had weed on him?

  • Vanta June 23, 2017, 7:12 pm

This is plain and simple. Some people been recruited to be officers are not fit for the task. Scared for your life is not something an officer should be taken to the job. As you can see from the moment he stepped out of the patrol his hand only left his gun grip for 2 seconds when he bent down to start talking about the tail lights and reached back for the grip. His partner more calm always kept his hands on his chest. Protect and Serve not go out nervous and execute. Clearly you can see he is not fit to be a law officers because he froze so bad that could not stop pressing the trigger. He didnt even double tap but used about 50% to 75% of the ammo in his magazine if it was a 9mm mag with 15-17 rounds and 1 in the chamber. He started freaking out the moment a law abiding citizen who does not even have to tell an officer that he has a concealed carry license (Just to educate you do not need a permit to own or carry a gun but pass the combined background check and in some states the sheriff dept. has to approve it) so right there you know that he is 75% clear of been a criminal because 1. a criminal threat to the officer by letting him know he has a legally owned firearm. 2. he passed the background check so he does not have a criminal record that is affecting. 3. there is a child in the car. 4. he was calm and complying by providing documentation. 6. the officer had a back up.
After looking at the wikipidia info on this case both officers present at the moment of the shooting have been in the St. Paul Police department for 4 years. So he was a newbie in my eyes. No a days there are many people wearing the badge that are not fit and have no valor. We know there are knuckle heads out there who mess with officers, but at the end is protect and serve even the one you stop. For his it was a black guy in an older car in a nice area, with locks. But to clear the racial issue because this was not racially motivated, this officer was nervous from the time he stepped out of the squad car as I mentioned his hand was on his sidearm grip from the moment he stepped out of the vehicle. So he is guilty of not been fit for the job and should not get any job anywhere else as law enforcement and should be banned from also carry any gun. He is a danger to himself and anyone around him. Now Gun Control cant fix this. I pray that Phillando was walking with God Spirit and knew the Lord and trying to stay in His guide. For the Family I pray that God grant them strength and comfort. For the officer you better get on your knees and pray and give Thanks to God cause He knows you did not want to do it and freak out. You have been granted it a chance that Phillando and family dont have of live. I know this will hunt you and affect you. Please search for God and dont let the Devil and evil spirits make you do something else worst that this and when you find Forgiveness from God and the courage to face your mistake say Sorry to the family and everyone that is really affected by the lost of Phillando. Phillando did nothing wrong but in a matter of second a movement to continue to comply with first order ltoproviding registration and license and informing about his legally owned gun added more fear in the already afraid officer. A word of advise to everyone: On a traffic stop. slow down and start gathering (license, registration and insurance) while in motion safely. Pray for you and the officers and rebuke any spiritual attack. When you stop turn your car interior lights (if tinted windows roll all down) and keep your hands visible hanging over the steering wheel with all documents. Greet the officer with a blessing and a pleasant look (something we dont know what he dealt with before he got to you, what evil spirits are at work or what personal issues he may have.) Ensure everyone in the car is aware of the protocol. I group up in a country where a black person driving nice cars was a drug dealer so imaging me been stopped all my life by spanish police and cars been searched and tracked. Even was arrested just for been black, but never shot by one regardless of, where police patrol with high caliber military grade weapons and do not shoot at anyone unless been shot and still then you dont hear of police killing because is people take the job and are trained to have the courage to deal with it without going out afraid. Been a law officer is not for everyone even if it was your dream to be one.
May God Bless everyone and that this help to shed light to the real issue and for people to reflect and learn also that the Devil can infiltrate simple things like this. As the bible says that God does not give us the spirit of fear and also that the Devil is there to steal, kill and destroy. Walk with God Spirit and you will see the truth behind it all.

    • Jeff June 23, 2017, 9:38 pm

The guy only said he had a firearm, Not a Legal firearm, Cops are trained to have one hand on there weapons during a traffic stop as well. You obviously do not know anything about firearms as well. “The cop Froze and never stopped so bad that could not stop pressing the trigger” this is a semi-auto, you have to release then pull again, release then pull again no a full auto machine gun. Any firearm training tells you to continue until the threat has been eliminated. No need to comment as if fact if you do not know anything about what you talking about. We and the Driver should have been) were taught in CC class you state ” I HAVE MY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT AND THERE ARE WEAPONS IN THE VEHICLE” and remain still and wait for instructions from the officer. He did not do this Stinks but those are the actual facts

      • Jimmy June 24, 2017, 10:32 am

There was no threat to begin with, yet he shot 7 times. Why didn’t his partner shoot, he was scared and freaked out. He should be in jail. Criminals don’t tell you they have a gun. Smoking pot doesn’t make you a bad person anymore than drinking a beer.

    • Mister Ronald June 23, 2017, 11:24 pm

All the dead guy had to do was “WHAT THE POLICE OFFICER ASKED”” He would be alive today and not a dead idiot.
Reaching for a gun was the very last mistake he ever did.
The Police officer did exactly what needed to be done.

    • Bill demet June 24, 2017, 5:06 am

You are a RACIST and you know it……. simple answer is listen and follow a cops order! To difficult for the uneducated. It’s that easy.

  • G newman June 23, 2017, 4:28 pm

He was told, don’t touch the gun…. It was not a white cop! He should not have moved. It only takes a second to pull the trigger on a cop! You don’t like it, try being one!

  • kenny June 23, 2017, 3:58 pm

clearly this was a bad shoot done by a bad cop. if this was normal than every single person getting pulled over would be shot going for their wallet. the cop heard gun and he panicked. he admitted he didn’t see a gun. there was a woman and child in the car. he had a partner for backup. He could’ve backed off and been in cover. How cops can’t screen their guys for this level of chicken shitery is troubling because 1 bad cop makes millions look bad.

    • Gman June 23, 2017, 5:26 pm

The cop acted irrationally. See what happens to you as a citizen after you have been in a shooting and you say you never seen the gun. You will never see the light of day again. I would expect this from a civilian with no training not a police officer. Why didn’t he back away from the car and order him out with his hands up and the disarm him. This could happen to any of us concealed carry holders. He panicked and overreacted and the man could of been reaching for anything. Maybe something fell on the floor and he was trying to pick it up. The cop has training to help him with these situations we don’t. We would be in prison for the rest of our lives if this was 2 civilians.

    • RonGDallas June 24, 2017, 2:06 am

I guess it will get a lot worse in Minnesota, because the concealed carry rules are going to change.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Minnesota want to remove permitting requirements to carry a gun and create a “stand your ground” law with pair of bills that a House committee heard Wednesday.
The GOP-led Legislature is seeking to capitalize on its majority by passing the two bills that are popular with their constituents. The elimination of permit requirements and broader immunity for shooters acting in self-defense were debated at hearings a day after a gun safety rally at the Capitol in opposition to the two measures.
Republican Rep. Jim Nash, who authored both bills, said they will strengthen the state’s Second Amendment rights without compromising safety. Supporters of the measures joined the Waconia lawmaker, saying felons and those in the criminal gang database would still be barred from carrying guns — similar to the state’s current laws.
Under the proposed carry bill, the penalty for illegally possessing a gun would be raised from a misdemeanor to a felony.
In 2016, Minnesota law enforcement issued a record 71,156 permits, over 26,000 more than the previous year.

  • Kathryn June 23, 2017, 3:39 pm

Its clear that the officer was extremely upset by the shooting. He was doing what he was trained to do. I hope that they change the format of pulling over a driver in the future for exactly these reasons. We want our cops alive and we want our citizens alive, no matter their race.

    • RonGDallas June 24, 2017, 2:12 am

Obviously, but in this clip they did not mention the smell of marijuana or that he looked like an individual involved in a robbery.
Police are trained to look at the person for recognition purposes, not just the color of his skin.
I would have most likely agreed with the jury.
I used to carry an M-16 professionally, nuff said.

    • Jimmy June 24, 2017, 10:41 am

He was probably so upset because he new he screwed up. That’s why he started laying down his cover story.

  • kris June 23, 2017, 2:04 pm

Back in the ’80s a cop friend gave me good advice on handling a traffic stop. He told me that cop shootings (this was back in the ’80s) where a cop gets shot frequently happen in “routine traffic stops”. As a result cops tend to be nervous during “routine traffic stops”. So he advised me that when being pulled over to get my wallet with license and registration out as I was pulling over (but before coming to a full stop). Place said wallet on dashboard; if at night turn on the dome light so the interior is well lit; place hands on the steering wheel. When officer asks for license and registration tell him that it is on the dashboard and that you are going to take one hand off the wheel and get it. Then wait a moment for the officer to look and actually see the wallet. Then slowly move the hand to the wallet. Back then I didn’t have CCW but I have for about 10 years now. So I have slightly revise my procedure for traffic stops. I still put the wallet on the dash, turn on the light and hands on the wheel but now I also tell the officer that I am CCW and ask if he wants me to give him my permit along with the license and registration. I’ve never had any kind of even the slightest problem.

The whole key is to be respectful and remember that the cop is always a little nervous at a “routine traffic stop” and as soon as he finds out you are armed he’s going to get a whole lot more nervous. Be polite. Do everything slowly and if you are going to remove your hands from the wheel tell him first and where exactly you are going to move your hands to. Then do it SLOWLY.

I know this seems like a lot of headache for traffic stop but remember you’ve got 2 nervous people that are armed and things can go wrong in a split second. In my experience these extra steps have put the officer at ease because he clearly sees that I am going out of my way to be non-threatening. Not only do I believe that this has avoided any chance of a “problem” but it has also IMO gotten me warnings instead of tickets or simply told “Have a nice day Sir and slow down a little please.” Even had one officer thank me for the excellent way I handled the stop.

Remember…You are dealing with a nervous man with a gun and there is ALWAYS an element of danger in that situation.

    • RonGDallas June 24, 2017, 2:20 am

I agree with you totally. Here in Oregon there one difference, the LEO is aware if the owner has a CCP. They use license plate scanners and an alert goes across their computer screen before they ever step out of the patrol car.
I did have a CCP permit but had to quit carrying because as a federal contractor for certain organization did not allow firearms in their building.

      • kris June 25, 2017, 10:02 am

Thanks….A lot of states an officer will know if you have CCW. But when I took my CCW class the instructor told us to always advise an officer just as a courtesy. Surprises during a traffic stop are a bad thing. Even if the officer already knows it can’t hurt to tell him. That way he knows you aren’t trying to hide the fact.

    • John June 24, 2017, 8:36 pm

pretty much i keep my wallet accessible when im driving , have my docs easily reachable and if i am carrying declare and dont make any stupid fast gesture , communicate with the officer and do as instructed ,, its not rocket science here folks ,act like a civil educated human and 99.9 % of the time life goes easier , problem is most of these idiots out here were never raised to used common sense and taught social interaction skills , and then the punks are like “aint nobody tells me what to do” , wrong answer., last cop i got pulled over ,removed my firearm from the holster ,secured it, {did not have cwp permit at that time } and when we were done we sat and talked for a few minutes like 2 people on the street having a normal discussion about firearms , he was like how do you like that glock 37 .45 GAP , i was like you know its kind of grown on me really accurate ,soft shooting and its 1090fps and 490 fp of energy whats not to like , he said nice ,allright have a nice night , i said you also and drove off . see folks thats how it works .

  • A.D. Roberts June 23, 2017, 1:34 pm

The cop’s response was TOO fast. He was already reaching for his gun. This was a BAD shoot.

    • Mike Mullen June 23, 2017, 4:20 pm

There is no such things as “too fast”. Here is where all the problems started:
      1) Castille made the fatal first mistake of not telling the officer “I have a license to carry a concealed weapon, and there is a firearm on or about my person, then kept his hands on the wheel or dash and FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS from the officer to the letter! During the brief shooting portion of the video, he said he “had a firearm”. This immediately sent the officer into warning mode and his hand on his gun.
      2) Mr. Castille appeared to argue with him by saying “he didn’t have to” or something like that and obviously never got his hands free where he could see his hand. He never did and paid for it with his life………

So, mr. Armchair Quarterback I would like to see you in the same situation to see how calm you are…..

      • Jimmy June 24, 2017, 10:50 am

Funny one arm chair quarterback counseling another. It doesn’t matter how calm we would be if we are not “trained” law enforcement. He never saw a gun and he shot the guy. The shooting in SC where the police officer actually saw the gun went on for a while with the police officer telling him to raise his hands and not pick up the weapon.

    • CAdavis June 23, 2017, 4:34 pm

      Too fast??? Really?
How many cops are dead because they hesitated.
This unfortunate shithead didn’t listen to what the cop was saying and got himself killed.
It’s not rocket science… if a cop says “don’t reach for the gun, let me see your hands” just f’n DO IT!

  • Dre June 23, 2017, 1:25 pm

If you think there isn’t a double standatd just look at how Dylan Roof was treated. He had just killed nine people. Go watch the video of his arrest. They even stopped at bought him lunch in the way to jail.

I guess cops never make mistakes. I guess they never have bad days. I guess they are perfect. I guess all cop were preordained by God to be cops and they can do no wrong.

I guess cops are forced to serve. I guess they were not aware that it a dangerous job before they signed up. I guess they get paid minimum wage.

Black people use always say we were abused by cops. We thought that once there was tape of it that would make a difference. Turns out it doesn’t.

What does it take to prove that a cop killed some? Please tell me what’s the standard?

    • Brian Myers June 24, 2017, 12:05 am

Crying racism, victimhood and flat out deflection just does not work anymore. The majority of Black men have a serious attitude problem towards any and all forms of authority. It’s clear that you all lack self respect. You lie to yourselves, your families and your friends. You want to do as you please to whomever you please and you don’t want to be called out for your evil deeds. Your music is poison, your lifestyle is thoughtless and your actions are provoking. Why must you all seek to be so different from what works- from what is normal and decent?! Why is “Black on Black” crime so out of control?! Black Lives Matters- GO “F” YOURSELVES. All lives matter; even BLUE lives! Cops are hired to do a job. When they ask you to cooperate, just do as they request and everything will be fine. Show respect for the rule of law and you will be treated with respect. Act like a punk from the hood and you’ll be treated like the loser you truly are! Join society or find a new country.

  • Roger Beaubien June 23, 2017, 1:18 pm

It’s sad that this driver died, but the lies around the incident, especially from the passenger, ensure that there will be not be any impartial views on the subject. Groups that hate and target law enforcement, like BLM, have made the police’s job even more difficult, to the point of virtually impossible.

First, a police officer now has to approach a vehicle or incident with the worry that the driver or passenger may be eager to kill them, far more so than in the past. With that in mind, the officer’s conduct has been forced to change to a more paranoid, defensive stance, based on real life incidents. The officer definitely doesn’t want to kill a suspect, especially a minority suspect, because they know they’ll be crucified, no matter the facts, and won’t be supported in most cases, by their chain of command. The statistics on shooting and studies on this have clearly shown this thinking to be occurring in many, if not all, police officer’s mind. ‘If I have to use deadly force, I’d rather it be against a white criminal than a minority criminal,’ rather than trying to be colorblind, basing deadly force solely on the actions occurring that result in said necessary deadly force. An excellent example of this is the recent incident where a female officer was wrestling with a huge non-compliant black suspect, who she let knock her unconscious, rather than shoot to defend herself, due to her realistic fear of being unfairly prosecuted, losing her job, and having her life ruined for doing her job.

Second, when the officer does interact with a suspect or criminal, they are extremely sensitive to odd behavior and non-compliance. If a suspect isn’t listening to commands, acting as if on drugs, then starts reaching for a hidden object, they now don’t have a waiting period to see what happens, and react accordingly. They are now forced to assume that a suspect reaching for a hidden object, and not complying with commands, is getting ready to shoot them. They can’t afford to assume or act on the possibility that the suspect is doing something innocent, or they’ll likely end up dead. The suspect in this case clearly wasn’t follwing commands, was reaching for a hidden object, and left the officer no choice.

Third, there is a Golden Rule expressed by many previously: Follow the Officer’s orders! Not difficult, not confusing, even seems to be common sense. Why can’t people do this simple task? Do what the officer tells you, don’t improvise. Unfortunately, I’ve been pulled over numerous times over the years, usually for speeding, and been given a few deserved tickets. (Honest, I’m trying to drive within the speed limit, but they are so slow!) Anyway, before the officer even gets to my car, I have my license, proof of insurance, and registration in hand. When the officer arrives at my window, I tell the officer, if he doesn’t ask me first, that I have weapons in my vehicle, while I keep my hands clearly in view, either holding my documents outside my window for the officer, or keeping my hands on my steering wheel. I’ve never had a problem, because I then follow the officer’s instructions to the letter. They’ll ask for the location of the weapons, I tell them, and carefully point to the locations, while not getting my hands near them or heading in that direction. Most officers have said, “okay, keep your hands on the wheel.” No problem! One officer asked for me to carefully hand him a fannny pack with a weapon in it, which he placed on my vehicle roof, and similarly told me to keep my hands on the wheel, away from my carry weapon at my waist. No Problem! One highway patrolman walked up to my window at night, where I told him immediately that I’m was armed. He said okay, just keep your hands visible. No problem! When he returned to my car after running my license and plates, he thanked me for being so up front about carrying, and actually following orders. I should mention that in my state (AZ), we don’t need a permit for concealed carry, and can open carry. The highway patrolman warned me about my driving deficiency, then thanked me for having a concealed carry permit (no longer required), explaining that the armed citizens in our state are extremely conscientious about following firearms laws, and have saved countless lives, including those of law enforcement.

What do all of those incidents have in common? I obeyed the officer precisely, and never acted in a way to cause fear in the officer’s mind that I was getting ready to draw a weapon. The results are that I received a couple of tickets for speeding, and a few warnings. Most importantly, neither the officer nor I were unclear in our actions and reactions, so there were no incidents. Pretty straightforward!

The media needs to be responsible and educate the public when these terrible shooting incidents happen, that a driver is required by law to follow an officer’s reasonable commands – like keep your hands in view, don’t reach for anything. Instead they sensationalize these terrible, unfortunate incidents, portraying the officer as the guilty party, and basically convicting the officer in the media. Thus ruining their lives for doing a dangerous job, that most snowflake Americans don’t have the strength, or public service responsibility, to contemplate doing. This also makes it increasingly difficult to recruit police officers. Seriously, the way they are maligned, who’d want the job.

Finally, to drive the point home, I.had an opportunity, with a friend, to approach a federal Border Patrol agent yesterday, where he was in his vehicle, and we were both openly carrying (out in the desert). I raised my hands, told the agent that as he could see, we were armed, but we were target shooting and law abiding citizens. He got out of his vehicle, waved our hands down, and showed no further concern about us being armed (although I’m sure he was alert). We had a nice conversation, thanked him for his service, and left. Neither of us acted in a precipitous manner to cause fear in the agent, and the interaction was friendly and low key.

The difference between all of my interactions with law enforcement, and the vast majority of cases where a suspect or criminal get shot are obvious. Just because you think you’re in a special group, doesn’t mean you can ignore the orders of law enforcement. Perhaps this should be taught in every grade, first through twelfth. Respect and listen to law enforcement, follow their orders precisely, and don’t try to create an incident. Then you won’t get shot. And where a law enforcement officer acts contrary to the law, they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, in a fair trial, unhyped by the media trying to poison the populace’s minds against law enforcement. And all good law enforcement officers want bad officers off the force ASAP, because they make the lives of good law enforcement far more difficult and dangerous. Roger

    • Kathryn June 23, 2017, 3:35 pm

Thank you for your comment. It was perfect.

    • Terry June 24, 2017, 8:25 am

I agree with most everything you stated except, respecr for authority should not have to be taught at school. Where are the parents? My father and mother had taught me respect long before I started school and they continued to re-enforce it as I aged.

  • H.Solution June 23, 2017, 11:50 am

I believe here in Alaska when the Police runs your License Plate number, It is tied in with the owner’s CCW permit, so before he gets out of his vehicle he knows there is a 90% chance you may- be packing a firearm at that moment.

    • Bob B. June 23, 2017, 12:07 pm

Doesn’t matter if he had a CCW or not, he was non-compliant and that put the police officer into defense mode. Moral of the story is, comply and stay alive. I am white, and in the mid 1970’s had a cop draw down on me for no reason, he was a rookie and his Training Officer partner stood at a distance and let him run the show. You bet your life I complied, because I am here to tell about it.

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 12:10 pm

Some states have gone to treating this as criminal history information. In other words the cop has to justify the subsequent running of a pistol permit. It used to be automatic in my state but not any longer. There is a duty to disclose though.

  • Sharp June 23, 2017, 11:44 am

I personally been in the situation of bein pulled over for overspending (20 mls over) while going to work. My wife was at the passanger front seat and my 9mm pistol placed together with my proof of insurance on the glove compartment. When the COP approached me whe asked if I knew why I was pulled over which I acknowledged overspeeding. Then, he asked me for my driver lincense and proof of insurance. And I answered that the insurance’s proof was on my glove compartment and also my concealed firearm for which I have permit. All time I placed my hands up visible to the cop eyes. Then, he asked my wife pull the insurance’s proof without touching my firearm. So she did. After he went to his patrol car and check my records, he came back returned my documents and gave me a written warning for overspending.

So what’s different my experience with this event. So clear it is the cop attitude. Obviously the one killed followed courteous and/or legal (depent of the estate) protocol to inform the cop of a concealed weapon. But the cop overreactd and panic shooting unnecessarily. You see on the video that his partner ran back of the unexpected shooting to protect fron his partner shooting.

Based on the video I seen on Youtube from the time before the car got pulled and after the backup arrived, I have no doubt that the cop killer is a liability to any police department and danger to any civilian under stressful situations.

I suuport LEOs for their dedicated serve and protect. I feel personal sorrow when a LEO is gun down on duty. But definitely this lucky coward should be ban to wear again the blue uniform. Period!

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 12:15 pm

You’re wife didn’t reach for and pick up the gun then? Situations don’t appear to be parallel in that regard. if your wife would have picked up the gun what does your crystal ball say about that? I mean, you have no video to SEE what Castile did, so you might as well guess what your officer would have said or done. I’m meeting a slam on your wife’s intelligence with his gun out may have been called for.

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 12:16 pm

        Betting a slam…

      • Chris Jones June 24, 2017, 11:07 am

The officer admitted in court he didn’t see the gun. In the above article (that you obviously didn’t read) he is quoted as saying “his grip was wider than a wallet”. My wallet is wider than my XD Mod2, so that isn’t reason to shoot.

    • Jusme June 23, 2017, 1:52 pm

Well Mr Sharp, it doesn’t appear to me that there was any similarity to your situation & the one in the video except that you were both stopped by cops. I have been stopped by numerous officers & have never had a problem, you just do what they tell you to do & cardinal rule is keep your hands on the steering wheel & when they tell you to do something you move slowly.

  • troop emonds June 23, 2017, 11:42 am

Chris Rock made a very famous statement during a comic skit. It was “How to eliminate blacks being shot by police officers”.
His advice was pretty simple and practical. “Just do what the officer says”.

Facts are, If you are not listening and not complying you are a threat, does not matter what color you are it is about doing what they tell you to do!

  • Frank June 23, 2017, 11:39 am

Cops are paranoid and trigger happy as it is. If you are pulled over, keep your hands on the wheel and follow commands!!! If I’m pulled over I do not immediately inform an officer I have firearm. After he asked for my license I hand them my permit along with the drivers license and then inform him I’m a law abiding citizen with a concealed carry permit and I am armed and put my hands back on the steering wheel in plain sight and usually they ask me where my firearm is. After telling them its location, I keep my hands as far away from it as possible! Just be polite and follow their commands!!!

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 12:17 pm

Disclose right away! Bad call! You don’t want the cop to see the gun before you disclose it. You had time to think about this, and still are making the wrong calls.

  • Al Kowsky June 23, 2017, 11:30 am

The cop was not guilty of murder, he panicked & made the wrong decision. Unfortunately an innocent man paid for the cop’s bad decision with his life. This cop should never have been given a badge. Not everyone has the aptitude or sound judgement under stress to be a cop.

  • Alan Butterworth June 23, 2017, 11:20 am

If you get stopped by the police and they can’t see your hands because you’re reaching for something, you might be shot.
It just can’t get much simpler than that and race only matters because so many Black Americans are killing each other, Daily, and the killers aren’t wearing signs that identify them as killers, so, how do you separate the killers from the Citizens with just a look? Nobody can do that. It’s on all of Us to present Ourselves as Completely Non-Threatening to these LEOs that are walking on a knifes edge everyday. To the Men and Women in Blue, God Bless You for Serving this Great Country and Be Safe.

  • Luke June 23, 2017, 11:16 am

Apparently, Yanez was fired by the city of St. Anthony immediately after being acquitted and will be re-assigned. I bet that’ll be fun for him. http://abcnews.go.com/US/minnesota-officer-found-guilty-fatal-shooting-philando-castile/story?id=48003144 . This is weird because Minnesota unions usually protect members regardless of their behavior or guilt. (I know that first hand from my days with MNDOT). It’s also weird because of the goofy DFL politics here. If I was a betting man, I’d wager that both the shooter and the victim voted liberal just by virtue of their residence in the Twin Cities area.

That said, at the heart of the controversy, virtually every comment I’ve heard or read about this horrible event are from people who want to control the degree of protection they get, the quality of protection and EXACTLY when they get it. . . .because they ‘pay taxes and therefore deserve it’. Only then, does racial injustice become important. The severe illiteracy in the United States is amazing. Worse than any other country>? Nah. The U.S. just has more journalistic cowards protected by our Constitution to demonstrate the concept of ‘educated idiot’.

    • Rogue June 23, 2017, 2:04 pm

Luke says ” I’d wager that both the shooter and the victim voted liberal just by virtue of their residence in the Twin Cities area.”
What’s wrong with folks now-a – days? What’s it matter how they voted? Lord please allow Luke to see just how biased that statement sounds!

      • Luke June 25, 2017, 3:26 am

Hey, Rogue: Everybody’s biased in one way or another. You might stop pretending that you’re not and forego the holier-than-thou bullshit. And, yes. I am biased and there are legitimate reasons. Not every form of bias is bad:
nobody LIVES on the fence for very long. Liberal democrats campaigning in population centers know their target and they pander to illiterate ‘victims’ who are HUGELY biased against whoever people like Al Franken deem bullies.

        • Luke June 25, 2017, 3:37 am

And. . . ‘what’s it matter how they voted’. Really? You are “What’s wrong with folks now-a – days?” Can’t recognize an opinion for what it is, especially when the sentence starts with “If I was a betting man, I’d wager. . . .” Sounds like you spend a lot of time eating MSM propaganda.

    • RonGDallas June 24, 2017, 2:34 am

You bet your comment was biased, but area of residence does mean something.
Minnesota laws are about to change.
ST.

  • Grant Atkinson June 23, 2017, 11:12 am

I know this isn’t going to be a popular comment but. That kid that died didn’t have enough training. Just because you own a firearm doesn’t mean you are qualified to carry it. I have had to take a several different classes to carry. I worked at a Gun shop/range in Colorado. I was the only non first responder or military that worked there. I had to over prove myself before they trusted me carrying a firearm. They wanted to make sure I knew as much as I could. The general manager would give me drills to shoot everyday. I would go through 200 rounds a day religiously for over 3 years. Knowledge is life when it comes to firearms. I feel really bad for the police officer. He did everything right and now he has to live with the face he had to take a life. I am in the same boat as him in a way. I didn’t have to go ake a life but I was forced to watch a man commit suicide on the range with a rented firearm. He looked right into my eyes as he pulled the trigger. Watching his head come apart was a bad thing. It was in slow motion. The real sad thing is it took the guy 17 hours to die. I know he knew what was going on because he tried to move his eyes when we tried to help him. I don’t think he could see. Not going to go into it. Too graphic. He used a 9mm Glock. That is why I will only carry 45 acp or 44 SPL. I have a J frame 357 but only use it as a backup if I do carry one at all.

  • Gary Robin June 23, 2017, 10:48 am

Heres a thought, when you are stopped….do what you are told to do…nothing more, nothing less. LISTEN TO WHAT IS BEING SAID TO YOU.
IF YOU DONT LISTEN, THE OFFICER IS GOING TO BE VERY SUSPICIOUS…AND FEARFUL.
Sit and listen, hands on the wheel until told otherwise.

  • The Observer June 23, 2017, 10:19 am

Just another “useless eater and worthless breeder” removed from civil society. Kudos to the cop.

    • Kford June 23, 2017, 10:40 am

I hope you’re joking? He was a model citizen working for the school system and helping kids….

YOU and your type need to be put away or down…..

      Shame on you

    • L June 23, 2017, 10:50 am

He was not a criminal. He was a working citizen with an impeccable reputation. Your comments are worthless!

      • D June 23, 2017, 2:20 pm

What so many seem to forget is he was LEGALLY carrying his firearm, told the coward officer he had the LEGAL weapon and he was reaching for his I.D like the officer asked , bottom line is a coward is a coward even if he is a cop. Now where I live I have to disassemble my weapons when I have them in my car after shooting or repairs etc and when pulled over I tell the cop what they are and where they are (9mm in trunk ammo case) and even after showing all paperwork license, ccw permit, insurance, registration etc he still called for back up and they searched my trunk and examined my weapon while I was asked to sit on curb and wait. I am a 55 year old veteran, white and disabled and when a cop is a coward it doesn’t matter what age race religion you are the person is always in danger . Take a lesson have all your paperwork ready to go in your visor put keys on dashboard with your hands in plain sight and always answer yes or no sir because in the end you don’t deserve to be treated like crap because you are an American citizen but when the situation does happen just remember your job right then and there is to get home alive and safe not all cops are cowards just like not all people being pulled over for “brake lights” are criminals but in that 10 -30 mins of being pulled over by any cop they are the boss yes it sucks but I’ll take feeling like shit because of a cop for 10 mins over being killed because my wallet looks like a gun handle

  • Chuck M June 23, 2017, 10:18 am

Wow. Not good at all. No, I was not there looking in the car, but most people get nervous being pulled over. A man is dead needlessly.

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 10:36 am

Needlessly because he pulled the gun out? Or needlessly because you think the cop shouldn’t have shot? If the latter, as you say, you weren’t looking in the car as you stated. THC slows reactions, affects people’s ability to focus, they lose perception of time and distance, etc.

      • Gman June 23, 2017, 5:40 pm

The cop reported never seeing the gun period. End of story. Doesn’t matter if he was a green alien from another planet. He murdered an innocent man and it was not a justifiable shooting. There are good cops and bad cops. Why? Because they are all human just like us. They go to college for 2 years and become perfect human beings? That’s some kind of college courses they take. Some have the ability and some don’t just like every job. This guy clearly should not be a police officer. What happened to protect and serve. I’m surprised he didn’t kill everyone in the car.

  • Just1Spark June 23, 2017, 9:45 am

When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Yanez attended ‘BULLET PROOF WARRIOR’ training, prior to shooting.
(It has since been renamed “Interaction and Influence”)
    http://www.startribune.com/officer-in-castile-case-attended-bulletproof-warrior-training/386717431/

  • Stephen June 23, 2017, 9:43 am

I have great respect for our LEO. They put their lives on the line every day and deserve our support. However, when they do wrong, I’m not going to shy away from criticizing them. Officer Yanez murdered this young man. Plain and simple. How the jury acquitted this bastard, I have no idea. Granted, there was poor communication on both sides, but the officer should’ve controlled his response much better. Being stoned does not give the officer license to murder a citizen. Poor training and poor tactics. I can see why his police department cut him loose.

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 10:38 am

You are reacting by seeing only the officer. You have no idea the movements or what Castile did. Should I get in a situation requiring a jury, please recuse yourself. I want people who take a decision once they have all of the evidence.

  • Dave June 23, 2017, 9:41 am

I see a lot of suppositions here. Suppositions about what the cop was thinking, about what the “girlfriend’s” motives were, about the jury’s actions, and worse – race. The supposition that all whites are bad, that all blacks are bad, etc…Really? I am white. One of my best friends is black. We work together. We talk almost everyday about what is happening outside of work. So don’t throw the race card at me. And by the way; I am not Scottish American, or English American, or whatever other pre-nationality you might want to add. I am an American. Pure and simple.

Now, that aside: Unless you were there you have no idea what exactly anyone was thinking. However, a jury of peers, you know – that whole Constitutional thing – acquitted the officer. Oh, and that included 2 black jurors. I will admit, the officer does seem to have acted over zealously. But, given the current number of police officers being shot down in cold blood on our streets is it any wonder that when an officer finds him/herself in a situation like this that they are scared; VERY scared. We demand that something be done about the violence and the senseless killings but when an officer reacts to what may very well be such a situation and it ends in a death all of a sudden people are screaming for his blood. All of you playing Monday morning quarterback, go put yourself in his shoes. You have problem with the police force in your town, then go apply. Put yourself out there. Then, after you have walked the walk tell us all how you feel.

There is 1 thing about this case that has not been made clear: where was the gun? Was it where Castile was reaching? I was stopped by a police officer while armed. I informed him I was carrying. He asked me where the weapon was. I told him it was in a holster on my side. He responded “OK”. I made sure any moves I did make, i.e., getting my wallet for my license, getting the insurance card, I made slowly and calmly, explaining each thing as I was doing it. I made sure I did my part in keeping things calm. Just food for thought.

  • December June 23, 2017, 9:37 am

I see a video taken wherevI can not see the driver. I sure would like to have heard the testimony of the woman, kid and partner to verify what happened. From the reaction of the partner he seems pretty startled as though he could not believe it. If the driver was not complying you would think he would have been acting more alert.
If the dashcam was the only evidence given then the prosecuter did not do much of a job.

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 10:45 am

Lack of evidence is a reason for not guilty. You’re thinking a$$ backwards. So the officer needs a body cam to exonerate himself, otherwise he’s guilty??? No one but the officer can say what Castile did. Based on his hyperventilation, the reality of he had just been in a shooting, all of which he clearly didn’t want to have happen. The SC cop that calmly greased the man who was running away and then tossed hist taser down, that’s a purposeful act to kill. The New Orleans cops that fought the guy on the ground for the gun, same reaction. “Basically I just shot someone, my life will be in turmoil for years if not the rest of my life. The scrutiny by those with no clue will be endless. I might be tried in criminal court. If not guilty double jeopardy doesn’t apply to me, as I can also be charged in federal court for civil rights violations. Then I can be sued for wrongful death, and finally the department can fire or discipline me. Any cop desiring to shoot another is insane. Ask me, I can tell you.

  • Dwayne Morton June 23, 2017, 9:12 am

Was there conflicting commands issued to citizens in the car by law enforcment? Where the citizens action in compliance to the best of their ability? Yes to both. Was the officer in question completely incompetent? Yes, and this killing of a model citizen is clearly an example of the lack of civil rights for black Americans in our country. It’s also an attack on all our 2nd Admendmend rights.

    • Old Sailor June 23, 2017, 9:55 am

First of all Dwayne, I don’t know what video you were watching but there were no conflicting commands issued. The officer was very clear in his commands. He told him not to reach for it and not to pull it out. Were the citizen’s actions in compliance to the best of their ability? Absolutely not! The passenger, Philando, was told not to reach for or pull the gun out. He should have, at that point, put both hands on the dash and not moved unless ordered to move. The officer did not appear incompetent in the video. He was very courteous and his commands were very clear. He did not draw his weapon until the passenger started moving around which gave the impression he was reaching for his weapon. You have no civil rights when you are, or appear to be reaching for a weapon after being told not to do so. Did the police officer have to shoot him? I don’t know. I’m watching a video from the safety of my home. I’m not standing at the car window, so I don’t know exactly what happened inside the car. It could have possibly been handled differently and everyone would have walked away alive. Philando could have certainly handled things differently and preserved his life.

      • Kford June 23, 2017, 10:47 am

This cop was poorly trained or didn’t follow protocol. As soon as he heard I have a gun. His 1st words should of been WHERE IS IT then Ok where is your license OR keep your hands out in front of you.

ALL MY COO FRIENDS HAVE SAID THE SAME THING I JUST POSTED AND MORE.

        So yes he was incompetent

        • Kford June 23, 2017, 10:47 am

          COP FRIENDS

        • Ben There June 23, 2017, 10:52 am

Your cop friends are wrong. If you ask where is it, MOST people look to the location and begin to reach for it out of reflex. He said don’t pull it out. Plain and simple and the best command. Watch a friend look at his watch to see what time it is. 2 seconds later ask them what time it is. They will instinctively look at their watch again. Way more often than not. The first order is don’t pull it out. Get confirmation they understand. Then I say without moving tell me where your firearm is. That’s one way a competent officer does it. the need to know where and rush in is where the incompetence comes in, and clearly Yanez gave proper commands albeit to a person under the influence of drugs.

      • Manosteel June 23, 2017, 10:52 am

Also there is a definite attitude among blacks to challenge and taunt a police command almost daring them to shoot them. When it happens then it’s a murder of a poor innocent black, you know black lives matter! They bring this upon themselves!! Over the Memorial day weekend in Indy there was 8 blacks killed by there own kind so Where’s the black lives matter movement when this happens??

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 10:48 am

The model citizen has been stopped 14 times in the last 4 years I think, and 63 charges, mostly traffic, but some drug charges. “Model” citizen doesn’t come to mind. Driving under the influence of THC, possession of a firearm under the influence. That’s only what I know about this guy and I live miles and states away from him. I question the school’s choice to employee him, regardless of his on duty performance good or bad.

      • Seabritt June 23, 2017, 11:20 am

This is good info – that you do not hear in the news
        ——
What about a shot in the leg ? ….see what reaction you get out of that ?
You are ready for the second shot in the kill zone if needed ??
I am guess this would have been a better outcome for both .

        • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:59 am

No, training is to shoot center of mass, never limbs, etc. That’s Lone Ranger stuff. Respectfully, you just have to take my word. No dept trains shoot to wound.

          • Chris Jones June 24, 2017, 11:16 am

Do they train you to fire 7 times into that center of mass.

    • Frank June 23, 2017, 11:45 am

Dwayne, There are many many more white folks killed by police than black folks! Last few years when the riots were occurring over cops shooting blacks, if anyone bothered to look at the FBI statistics they would have discovered that in the same time period, more than twice the number of white folks had been shot by cops!!! ALL LIVES MATTER!!!

  • joe June 23, 2017, 9:10 am

This is an execution. Yes, it’s driven by fear – but if any of we mere civilians did this, we’d be strapped in the chair and the switch thrown.

This is where the so-called limited government “conservatives” chime in with their absolute worship of the state’s enforcers.

Being a cop used to be a dangerous job because they were paid to take risks. Now they shoot first and ask questions later. If they have 5 minutes to plan, they send in armorer vehicles and have 20 guys with machine guns kick in doors at 3 am. There’s very little risk involved and they don’t even come close to a ‘dangerous job’ by fatality rate.

We’re trained by the state to worship these guys as ‘heroes’ so we don’t complain much when they violate our rights.

    • Mason June 23, 2017, 9:54 am

How many years have you worked as a police officer ? How many times in your life has someone who matched a robbery suspect been non- compliant when you knew they were armed?
Until you can answer those questions with conviction, you have nothing to say and you’re talking out of your ass.

    • Old Sailor June 23, 2017, 10:05 am

I’m a limited government conservative and you don’t know what the hell you are talking about. I believe if a cop has done wrong he/she should be punished under the law just like anyone else.

You have no idea what it takes to be a police officer in today’s world. My son is a police officer. Do you have any idea what it is like wondering each day if you will get that call? People used to have respect for laws and police officers. My son was on the SWAT team when two of their officers were shot (one killed) in a WalMart parking lot while simply talking to a mentally deranged man in a van and trying to help him. He surprised them with a gun after 30 minutes of them talking to him and shot them both. The one killed was the first black officer to be hired by his department and had been on the job over 20 years. Being a cop today is much more dangerous than it ever was. Please do us all a favor and stick your foot farther in your mouth so no more biased BS comes out of it.

    • Ed June 23, 2017, 10:50 am

You, joe, are a complete moron. This is a fact. In today’s activist-fueled world of narcissism and arrogance, each police officer starts the duty shift with a big target painted on his/her back and chest.
I doubt you’ve been “trained” to even recognize courage or honor anywhere, much less “worship” it. If there is justice in the world, your ignorant rant about “the state’s enforcers” will earn you a face-to-face with a Glock someday. Good luck surviving such an encounter when it occurs.

    • John June 23, 2017, 11:12 pm

Joe, you are just a liberal Police hating troll, he got shot because he failed to LISTEN. Too mant people especially liberals like to simply talk over others and in this case paid for his ignorance. Forother poster sayinghe is a model citizen, model of what a criminal? If you get pulled over by Police you comply with their orders, so what if he had a permit of a weapon, it doesn’t matter keep your hands where they can see them and PAY ATTENTION – your life might depend on it. And joe, if you get in a jam and need to call the Police, don’t because apparently you can try to talk your way out – good luck.

  • Danny June 23, 2017, 9:08 am

Obviously this issue has become another racism- racial profiling platform. Here’s a simple suggestion. Read the FBI uniform crime statistics. You are 15 time more likely to be killed by a black male between the ages of16 to 35 yrs old than anyone else.
Racial profiling is a fact of life created and sustained by black males.
Racial profiling is also a fact in the NBA. Again brought on by black males who are better at a game invented by a white dude.
Democrats, Socialists , Marxists etc. Will all ignore this. The facts are their enemy.

    • Diah4g June 23, 2017, 9:56 am

It amazes me how Caucasians love to point out and rely on the manufactured “heard about” yet not experienced statistics of crimes caused and involving black Americans. Yet scoff at the real-world day to day testimonials of black citizens. No secret about the dangers of inner cities, where blacks and Latinos are populated with heavy drug culture and violence. We all know that. But where your FBI stats on the response time it takes 1st response team’s to arrive in these areas when a crime is committed or an medical emergency? Where are your FIB stats that speak to the disproportionate amount of school funding for inner city schools vs. Your exclusive preparatory and private schools? Funny thing is I’m not even sure how to feel about this particular case, but to dismiss it as another race card pulling tactic from black Americans crying for justice, is as senseless and racially charged as you’ll see today. Thanks for perpetuating ignorance.

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:02 am

Stay focused. You went from this shooting and analyzing this situation, to inner cities, poor schools etc. Janitors can’t murder people and neither can a Wall St banker. I don’t care how poor you are, they you live in the inner city, etc. Don’t reach for the gun, don’t smoke weed, drive, and have a gun. Far more whites are killed by cops than blacks or hispanics. If you’re dead, it doesn’t matter if it was a white guy that killed your or black, as you are just as dead. Your thoughts are to EVEN THE SCORE, rather than settle this issue and incident with the facts that are relevant to THIS event. If you want to look at big picture, look at Michael Brown. He has a memorial for him in the street where he was killed. AFTER he assaulted the cop, and tried to take the cops gun. Two black Americans testified to this, and forensic evidence proved it. We have videos of him robbing a store, and another video of him knocking an old man out with a punch that could have killed him. And we have a memorial to him??? How do you think white people feel about that? Backbending politicians allow it to get votes, mostly backboneless whites that want to appear sympathetic. There are a lot of great black people. Michael Brown is not one of them, nor would I want him memorialized if I were black.

  • AFV815 June 23, 2017, 9:02 am

One wonders how this would have turned out if the victim had not mentioned that he was armed? I do believe what we witness in the video is a lack of training on the part of the police department. Perhaps more time spent with “Shoot, Don’t Shoot scenarios and tactical movement practice would have better prepared this officer for the situation he found himself in. I find this shooting difficult to justify, as the officer could have easily removed himself from the line of fire (victim is in an enclosed, unarmoured space, in the sitting position and his movement restricted by a lap and shoulder seat belt). All the officer had to do was step behind the driver and brandish his pistol to get the upper hand and be out of the line fire. Of course hind sight is 20/20; but I believe this was an avoidable shooting. There are other factors at work here to be sure, seven shots almost suggests a “rage” type reaction from someone with poor self-control caused by…..? Personally, I believe anyone in a duty status that involves the carrying and potential use of fire arms should subject to a mandatory random drug testing (including for anabolic steroids; which are usually omitted because of the expense).

    • Steven Hayden June 23, 2017, 9:21 am

      • The Observer June 23, 2017, 10:17 am

        And the problem is? lol

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:17 am

Charging dog that wasn’t listening apparently. Ever seen a “nice” shooting? They’re all terrible. However, it’s fact. A Canadian sniper allegedly shot a terrorist at over 2miles. Some people say we shouldn’t make a sport of killing people. It’s not sport, it’s war. When American sniper came out, the snowflakes got mad that he shot terrorists. And these enemies were killing our soldiers. They are the same people that decry hunting, yet they get in line at McDonald’s for their Big Mac that apparently is a man made product they believe. The harsh realities are that war and killing is not attractive, and now because of cameras most people are seeing it first hand. The NFL player got a slap on the wrist for punching his girlfriend. Then the video surfaced and he got more punishment because it looked really bad. Hmm. I’ve never seen a man lay a woman out cold where it looked pleasant. This is just an example where people, who think they know a lot, are seeing something for the first time and reacting just like that, showing no experience or competence in the area. That’s good. We don’t want citizens to all know death, war, violence all the time. But please don’t try to understand it when you do see it. I’ve seen a thousand of these, been in a couple, supervised a few more. You look at these with a different approach rather than over reaction and emotion. Clearly the cop didn’t wish this to happen. Clearly he gave commands and the THC influenced subject, feloniously or not, went for the gun and began to pull it out. I’ve seen pics of supposedly the gun on his lap. Terrible situation, definitely not a murder.

    • Old Sailor June 23, 2017, 10:13 am

Have you ever been in a shooting situation? Most shooters, police or civilian, will tell you they have no idea how many shots they fired. It is reactive and they will tell you they shot to stop the other person. Most often they think they shot one or two rounds when they emptied the mag.
I was in a shooting situation in Junior High during a home invasion. I thought there was only one shot fired from a .22 during the fight until it was all over and I saw the hole in the wood floor from the shotgun blast. To this day, about 50 years later, I still can’t ever remember hearing the shotgun discharge. I just remember the one .22 round fired into the invader that stopped it all.

  • Voice of Reason June 23, 2017, 8:59 am

It is unfortunate that someone died for being stupid. I am more concerned that the woman was more interested in Facebook than the fact that he was just shot in front of her.

I purchased the NRA shirt that has the flag on the back about supporting police but this police officer is an idiot. Mr. Castile was behaving properly and the police officer panicked. He was trigger happy and did indeed murder this guy. The jury had to be deaf, dumb and blind to acquit the officer. It makes me sick and Mr. Castile’s family should sue the city for a poorly trained and incompetant police officer on their force killing an innocent driver. Disgraceful behavior by a bully cop with a gun. I will continue to wear my shirt but this kind of cop is impossible to defend o support the isolated moron who is not psychologically capable of enforcing the law and dealing with citizens. Fire him immediately and also sue him in civil court for reprehensible behavior.

    • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:18 am

… so you would have allowed Mr. Castille to pull his weapon out before taking defensive action Mike? Way to go hero,
      Congratulations, You’re dead!

  • TJ June 23, 2017, 8:40 am

The reality is had the suspect COMPLIED with the officers commands he would still be alive. Very very very simple to understand and comply with. The officer had just cause to stop the vehicle, not only for the taillight out but also due to the driver and vehicle fit the description of a robbery suspect. Officers don’t just walk right up to a vehicle, they transmit information and get information from dispatch so that they know as much as possible on who they are about to confront. It is likely the officers knew before they got out of their vehicle they were going to be dealing with a suspect that has issues with obeying laws. Continuing to move when an officer is yelling at you is going to get you shot. It is also a fantasy that only blacks are being shot not complying with lawful orders its just they are the ones the media is reporting on. FBI statistic reports show an officer is at least 9 times more likely to be shot and killed by a black criminal than the criminal being killed by an officer. When put in perspective comparing to other demographics the rate of blacks killing officers is quite alarming and officers are fully aware of it. To say officers are somehow cowards for not just being passive and let themselves get killed is nothing short of insane. In so many situations the events happen so fast that a second or two can be all it takes to have a gun pulled on you, officers are trained and have to react quickly to an ever changing situation. This situation did not need to happen and simply complying with the officer would have changed everything.

    • Ralph Culbert June 23, 2017, 9:29 am

The officer was not trained enough. He shot an innocent man.

    • John June 23, 2017, 9:38 am

You are simply wrong. Castille did comply. This article is bullshit. And leaves out that the officer testifies that Castille froze. And did not move after the officer gave the command “Don’t move.” The officer also gave him the command to show him his license. Which was located in his wallet in his back pocket. Regardless, Castille froze. And the officer testifies Castille did not move after the command “Don’t move.” And he shot him anyway. This all happened in the span of 5 seconds. Castille is told to show his license, then told to not move, and is shot…all in 5 seconds.

    • RonGDallas June 24, 2017, 3:08 am

You have it exactly correct. Officer Yanez had a lot of training. There was a link posted above stating his training.
These kids spouting BS know nothing about reality.
Newspapers also said he was fired, not true, mutual agreement terms to be announced. PTSD.
The City of St. Anthony announced that it fired officer Jeronimo Yanez from the department on the day he was cleared of all counts in the killing of Philando Castile.

“The City of St. Anthony has concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city,” the statement said. “The city intends to offer Officer Yanez a voluntary separation agreement to help him transition to another career other than being a St. Anthony officer.”

The terms of the agreement will be negotiated soon, the city said, so no other details were immediately available. In the meantime, Yanez will not return to active duty.

  • Pierman June 23, 2017, 8:37 am

I think we all need to read the article about the officer’s testimony. He thought he recognized the driver as someone wanted for an armed robbery. Now, having been a law enforcement officer in my younger years, if I am thinking this guy looks like a robbery suspect either before, during or just after he announces he has a gun then yes I would have reached for my weapon and been ready to defend myself. All it would have taken to prevent this officer involved shooting was for the driver to have kept his hands in sight. You cannot wait until shot at to return fire…that will get you a real impressive police funeral.
No police officer in their right mind wants to shoot an innocent person no matter what color their skin is. We are able to have the luxury of hindsight to second guess and what if the situation. I can tell you from experience when you are the one facing the danger your decision has to happen in a split second.
I will give you a real life scenario. In 1980 I responded to a call of ‘ Armed Robbery in Progress’ at a local convenience store. I was the first officer on the scene and the man matching the description was still in front of the register with his hand in his pocket. I burst through the door, leveled my 357 magnum at his chest and yelled ‘show me your hands’. He started removing his hand from the pocket slowly and there was a bulge in the pocket. I had already put my finger on the trigger and was applying pressure as it was apparent that he was high on drugs (glassy eyed). I was within less than a second of shooting him when the bulge flattened out and the hand came out empty. He had made a fist inside his pocket to make it look like he was armed. By the time I ordered him on the floor backup was arriving. I was covered in sweat, my hands were shaking…I was a mess. We can second guess this guy from now on but you never know what you would do until you are in that situation.
I always found the best way to deal with critics was to invite them on a ride along or to become a reserve officer…I never had a taker because they did not want to put their life in danger.

    • Dr Motown June 23, 2017, 9:51 am

So, why would an “armed robbery suspect” be calm and cooperative with the officer, notify the officer he has a gun, and then try to pull the weapon with his child in the back seat and a second officer on the other side of the car??? Nothing about Yanez’s testimony makes sense.. NOTHING. The dude panicked as soon as he handed the license back to Castile and heard the word “gun.” Within two seconds, he’s filling Castile full of lead…RIDICULOUS

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:28 am

That is WAAAYYYY more common than you think. It’s called distraction, 3rd grade reverse psychology, etc. Your premise is once confronted suspects will be suspicious, not follow commands, and remain deceitful and uncooperative…Hmmm, Castile did some of this. Or, the suspects will say, “you got me officer. I’m armed, and smoking weed”. Doesn’t happen too much. Denial is huge, even in the face of evidence that people are lying. Many suspects ask questions and then, bolt, and the chase is on. The pull the race card and want your badge number. Once told they are under arrest as the witness in the next car had ID’d them, the foot chase is on…Officer this is my house I lost my keys….shazam they’re rounding the corner at full speed. If you have a gun your hands go on the steering wheel and they don’t come off until the cop knows you’re armed and you confirm that he does want you to move. You are trying to rationalize the irrational.

    • John June 23, 2017, 9:58 am

Wrong. The officer asked for his license. Which was in his wallet in his back pocket. Which was why Castille was reaching back. Castille did exactly what concealed carry classes teach, which is inform the officer he is armed. The officer told Castille, ‘Don’t Move’…which Castille did. The officer testifies he froze and did not move after that. The officer shot him anyway. This article picks and chooses which facts it wants to present to paint a more favorable picture.

And I don’t want to become a reserve officer because I work 50+ hours a week for $120k a year. And don’t want to spend my free time making $15 per hour dealing with people at their worst. And being a LE officer is not even in the top 50 most dangerous jobs in the America.

      • Pierman June 23, 2017, 1:03 pm

John, you are wrong. The concealed carry class I took in South Carolina (years after leaving law enforcement) instructed all students to hand their Drivers License and CWP to the officer at the same time before announcing that they had a gun. It was taught by a law enforcement officer. I moved to Florida and the same thing was repeated in the class I took here. Hand both to the officer at the same time and keep your hands on the steering wheel. Let the officer ask if you are armed and then tell them yes and were the gun is located on your person or in the vehicle with both hands on the steering wheel.
You might make 120K but believe me you don’t know how you will respond (no matter how much training) until you personally face that situation. Look at the first part of the video, the officer is calm and respectful of the driver. He goes on alert when the driver says he has a gun and then refuses to obey the order not to reach for it.
Bottom line: you are armed and have a permit, you come home with your family and come face to face with an intruder in your house. He says I have a gun, you say don’t reach for it and he starts reaching. Are you going to wait to see if he pulls a gun and starts shooting your family or are you going to take action?
Stay on your 120K job, you would get killed the first week out on patrol.

    • RonGDallas June 24, 2017, 3:21 am

I agree with you. Around 1971 I was working in a small grocery in Portland and I was selling a bottle Tokay to a regular customer and a guy stepped up beside him with a knife and said give me all the money.
I knew him as a local drug user and told him I would give him $5 for his knife. He looked down at it said NO, at that moment the previous customer smashed his bottle in a bag across his head, wine going everywhere. He kind of looked at us funny like and staggered out the door and stumbled against the plate glass window breaking it.
I gave the other customer a replacement bottle of wine.

  • Snookpig June 23, 2017, 8:19 am

Always do what the police ask. Pretty simple. This is only a racial thing if you want to make it that.

    • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 8:52 am

Agree, but police is NOT supposed to kill the citizenry, they are to “PROTECT and SERVE”. How does this behavior have ANYTHING to do with that? Cops need to shape up, get the assholes OUT, or more are going to die. This is common sense. And if cops don’t clean up their act and stop killing innocent people, the cops will be targeted. Mark my words – in fact, it’s already happening.

      • Mason June 23, 2017, 9:59 am

When you’re non-compliant and someone has a gun pointed at you, your best solution is to follow orders.

I love how morons these days think they’re absolved of having to obey orders from authority .
        Guess what?
        You’re not.

      • Old Sailor June 23, 2017, 10:16 am

I recommend you read Pierman’s post above, Doc.

      • Maha June 23, 2017, 10:28 am

The suspect in the car did not comply with verbal commands. He stated he had a weapon but refused to keep his hands on the steering wheel. His behavior forced the officer to respond. With cops being executed by black men around the country at the time of this shooting, how could we expect a cop to respond? Wait until he is shot?

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:33 am

Shooting people that present a deadly threat is REQUIRED, not just a choice, if you want to live. We don’t protect Charles Manson when he’s orchestrating murders, and we don’t protect bank robbers no matter their color. We protect society by locking up, and unfortunately, having to use force on some that are a danger to society. Your comments are no one should ever be hurt by the police or forcefully arrested because that’s always bad doesn’t make a lot of sense. We protect society by sentencing criminals to time in jail. Soooo, how do we get them there if they don’t want to go? If we let them go and they hurt someone else, do you blame the police then?

  • BigC June 23, 2017, 7:53 am

When pulled over, keep your F’n hands on top of the steering wheel, until instructed to do otherwise, then do EXACTLY as told!!

    • Dr Motown June 23, 2017, 9:53 am

He DID DO “EXACTLY AS TOLD!” He calmly handed Yanez his license, then calmly notified the officer he had a gun in the car as Yanez was giving him the license back. That’s when Yanez panicked and filled the guy full of lead within 2 seconds of hearing the word “gun.”

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:34 am

Send us the link that shows Castile’s physical actions.

  • Adam13 June 23, 2017, 7:43 am

Part of the job of a police officer is putting themselves in danger, if they do not accept this they should not take the job. Because this is a fact they should 1. Have a higher threshold for reacting to danger with gunshots (I personally believe something along the lines of do not fire until fired upon) and 2. They should get paid more for taking this risk and it should be highlighted by our governments i.e these are dangerous and honored positions so we are paying you commensurately with that great burden and responsibility, not indifferent than combat or hazard pay. Higher salaries would then attract higher caliber (pun intended) candidates/officers who shoot less people uneccesarily. With regards to the systematic racism (read fear of black people) in America and our police force this standard of using your weapon would help us fake it until we make it because we’ve got to get over it.

    • Henry June 23, 2017, 7:59 am

In the mean time while we’re waiting for y’all to get over your racism we die. If colored cops were out here shooting up Caucasian folks y’all be lynching every colored cop you’d see. Sick folks need the psycho wards and not blue uniforms with guns.

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:36 am

Never had a problem with black officers shooting a white suspect. Race never mattered. Whites don’t riot and loot like the inner cities do. If so, send me the links. I bet I have more ammo in that regard. The black Milwaukee cop that shot a black suspect was still chastised by blacks. I didn’t care the color of either. The investigation and subsequent trial vindicated the black officer.

    • Thomas George June 23, 2017, 8:34 am

Let the perp shoot first before law officers can defend themselves is stupidity beyond reason!! This would only lead to many more dead or wounded officers. From this video I believe both the officer and the jury reached an accurate conclusion! I admit a bias as my son is a State Police officer. I and his family (2ytoung sons) want him to come home safely after each duty tour. KEEP YOUR FKING HANDS ON THE WHEEL UNTIL TOLD DIFFERENTLY!! What is so hard about this to understand!! Disobey lawful orders from the officer and this same result becomes highly probable!!

    • Obama's Boyfriend June 23, 2017, 8:46 am

You really can’t fix stupid. Its genetic.

    • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 8:54 am

Absolutely, Adam. Actually, there is NO NEED for Lethal Force; they have plenty of non-lethal methods. This is citizen culling by a criminally corrupt gov’t. We need to overthrow it.

      • Mason June 23, 2017, 10:02 am

And you’re exactly the problem with your far left ‘ anti society ‘ rhetoric .
‘ hey lets go burn down that 7-11 cause this will help our perceived social injustices y’all…’
And ill be on the other side with my 545×39 to stop you.

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:41 am

Doctorless Moebius – We don’t go to gunfights with a taser. The ineffectiveness and fallibility of those things is way more than you’d believe. For every “Don’t tase me bro” video, there are a 1,000 fail to work videos that aren’t shown. Misses, clothing prevents probes from getting to the skin, no near muscular incapacitation, etc. If he would whacked him in the head, with a night stick, through the car window I guess, and killed him, you would be just as mad.

So glad this type of idiocy doesn’t run in the real world.

Another scum cop gets away with murder. I hope he is hunted down and gets what he deserves.

    • Obama's Boyfriend June 23, 2017, 8:47 am

Hmm, where were you a guest of the government and how much time did you serve?

      • joe June 23, 2017, 9:13 am

Hmm, do you still work for the government or are you on your pension now?

        • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:42 am

Well, I’m on my pension unit the governor takes it away. By the way been shot at, stabbed at, arrested people for murder to littering. Protected presidents to Farrakhan, to the Klan, because it was my job. You? No pension? Do you work?

    • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 8:56 am

Andy, I understand your sentiment. Don’t be hating these stupid young white boys, put into the wrong position for their power control issues. These bullies currently infecting our police departments are a result of the mental illness in our society. Don’t blame, don’t be hatin’, thy to find ways to educated and change people’s minds in a less assholish way.

      • Dr Motown June 23, 2017, 9:55 am

“Stupid white boys?” His name was Yanez, which is Hispanic according to my good friend with that same last name…

      • Mason June 23, 2017, 10:06 am

And you’re exactly the problem with your far left ‘ anti society ‘ rhetoric .

And ill be on the other side with my 545×39 to stop you.

  • Jay June 23, 2017, 7:39 am

What I saw was a everyday traffic stop gone bad, an officer react to someone Not Listening and Doing what he was told to do! The girl friend is obviously not too upset to be calmly talking on the phone like she was all prepared to give a eye witness account of this incident! The officer was extrmely upset that he had to draw his firearm and shoot this guy because of Non Compliance! All he had to do was listen and comply! Not doing what an officer tells you can be a bad situation all the way around I don’t care what your skin color!

    • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 8:58 am

No, Jay, there was never a need by the cop to kill this innocent young man The young white Nazi was a paranoid dumb fool who has bought into the FEAR the corrupt system tries to sell you. DON’T BUY IT! Blacks are not your enemy, no one is! Don’t let others tell you who you enemy is, EVER! Fuck this corrupt gov’t, for trying to make us kill each other.

      • Old Sailor June 23, 2017, 10:19 am

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:45 am

White Nazi? Yanez? While we’re at it what about the black Milwaukee cop that shot a black suspect. What’s your thoughts on that? Stupid Black Boy? Would you call him that?

      • mason June 23, 2017, 11:52 am

Either way, we all know he’s a lion on the internet but a mouse in real life.
        Stay seated.

      • Jay June 24, 2017, 8:24 am

No moebius, by your comment your the one in fear of being in control of your own domain. I fear no man that includes you and those like you, who spew prejudice and hatred because of your own self made fears of those not like you! The fact remains that law enforcement is there, and when there, you comply, with any reasonable request until they feel the situation is no threat, period! No one need fear law enforcement, be it a young cop or old cop as long as you comply and communicate! Your hatred of fear, has obviously made you fear fear itself and that will make you unable to reason! Fact is this gut knew he was going to jail no if’s and’s or but’s about it because he was high, driving while under the influence, carrying a weapon and having a child in the car while high carrying that weapon, all illegal acts! Not to mention he was also suspect in a crime!

  • Cyrus June 23, 2017, 6:55 am

If I am pulled over and I’m carrying the first thing I tell the officer is that I have a permit to carry a firearm! Then after that is stated – I tell the officer that I have a firearm in the car. Then after that I ask him or her how do you want me to proceed so nobody gets hurt from a mistake. That is the correct way for the civilian to handle the situation. The Officer, as stated by another here, if he felt threatened, should have calmly asked the man to put both hands in clear site on the steering wheel until we can sort this out. In my opinion, this Officer was a loose cannon. My opinion is backed up by the fact he pumped 7 shots into this guy while buckled up inside the car in a sitting position. Fuck! My break light is out and now I’m fucking dead? Come on!!!!

    • mtman2 June 23, 2017, 8:36 am

Well there are good cops that are fully capable of responsible behavior and have an innate descretionary wisdom.
These are the officers “WE the People” who pay for the service expect and want in that position.
However a growing percent of LEO’s are punks and downright stupid and have ZERO business in such a responsible position.
Whoever trains them knows who is competent and who isn’t or *they themselves are incompetent* to set loose on the public those that never should be there.
This shooting is the story of one such repercussion for such poor oversite responsibilities by whoever allows incompetent people to have a semblance of authority.
Much more must go into determining who’s truly got what it takes for a needed high bar of qualification.
I do far more dangerous work than lawenforcement- in falling timber and taking down dangerous trees and idiots either die or are injured to get weeded out(or the work is just too hard).
Anyone with 1/2 a brain realizes this is dangerous work and listens to experienced advice and pay attention every second or else becomes a statistic.
A close call or two(if lucky to escape) weeds out many because it is their life and limb on the line.
Tho idiots and occasionally good workers in this field do err and harm or kill others by mistakes or incompetence- mostly tho it is themselves that get harmed by actions or missed observations of imminant danger.
      * IF officer Geronimo felt things were uncertain with that driver he could have yelled “STOP”….
That seemingly would get compliance in far less time than pulling his pistol, pointing it while taking a safe off then emptying his pistol into that man in an uncertain situation that one word would have arrested his movement into a freeze……….before blowing the man away for nothing~!

      • Ben There June 23, 2017, 11:51 am

Don’t pull it out, in essence is STOP! I’m a 30 year cop. I also have fallen my share of trees. Heated with wood my first 23 years. I can drop a tree on a ball cap. More hours with a Stihl than some lumbermen who do it with 1 million dollar John Deere machines like they did on my 120 acres. The problem is, shooting the tree doesn’t do any good, and when you have a close call there’s isn’t much recourse and it’s totally unexpected. There are some dangerous tree cuts. In the end, if the loggers are clear out of the area, all you have to do is drop the tree without killing yourself. If it doesn’t fall the right direction, you screwed up, but will probably live. If you’re killing other loggers you’re not working a safe site.

    • Thomas George June 23, 2017, 8:41 am

And while the officer is calmly asking the driver to put his hands in plain cite(sic), the non-compliant driver, seat belt or not, continues to draw his weapon and shoots the officer? Whoever wrote the comment above is an idiot!!

    • Obama's Boyfriend June 23, 2017, 8:51 am

If you are carrying why do you tell the officer via a note? So the officer told the man not to reach for anything and what does this Einstein do? Yup, Einstein did nothing to do with his ticket to rainbow heaven. Combine this with his girl friend’s wonderful video and one has to ask yourself, why do birds of a feather flock together to get really, really high?

      • John June 23, 2017, 10:07 am

Read more. Castille was order to show his license. Which was in his back pocket. The officer testified that after the “Don’t move.” order Castille froze and did not move again. Seriously, read more. Use multiple sources. Otherwise you sound like an idiot.

      • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 2:31 pm

Because we’re free humans who don’t need psychopaths with a badge cramping our style. I’ve had just about enough of these murdering white racists (I’m white) and I despise this agenda. Cops are gonna be zombie meat when the crash comes…they ought to be more like British bobbies, who actually help people.

    • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 9:12 am

Are you out of your mind? Don’t tell a cop you are carrying, unless he tells you to get out of the car. THEN you tell him!

  • Lou June 23, 2017, 6:39 am

This was a decision made within seconds – I am sure the officer did not wake up in the morning and say I need to shoot a black male today and put a child and woman in harms way. Not to mention the aftermath with legal issues and protests. He gave clear orders & made a decision to save his life (from his perspective). We can second guess all we want but the human element will always be there – no one is perfect – maybe if the man in the car had his hands in the steering wheel when he notified the officer of the fire arm this might not have happened. More reality based training with simmunitions can reduce these situations but not eliminate them. I don’t like seeing any innocent person killed in these situations, just like I don’t like seeing police getting killed in the line of duty. The 2nd amendment is for all of us, but we need a standard of training so we can all be safe!

    • Henry June 23, 2017, 7:33 am

We all know that the 2nd amendment is not for people of color. After the civil war color people were the only ones banned from owning firearms. Be for real for a change. You guys can never accept your beastly behavior.

      • Jason June 23, 2017, 7:56 am

Really Henry? You’re going to go back 150 years when things were obviously much different than now.. That comparison is invalid now days; the law has changed giving African Americans equal rights. You’re trying to start a race argument with you’re ignorant comment, so do us all a favor and stop.

      • Tim June 23, 2017, 7:57 am

Henry- Knowledge is good. Don’t be afraid of it. The NRA was formed by two white Union Army Generals after the Civil War mainly to gain gun rights for blacks. More importantly, today is 150 years after the Civil War. Wake up. The only ones that don’t want you to have 2nd Amendment Rights these days are Democrats!

      • Urdumb June 23, 2017, 9:08 am

But we’re not in the civil war era, and all people of any color can get a gun by completing the correct process. What you said are irrelevant facts to today’s real issues…

    • Doctor Moebius June 23, 2017, 2:38 pm

Word, Lou. These adolescent males with power & control issues HAVE NO PLACE AS COPS. A Cop needs intelligence – how many smart cops do you know? Also, they sure need sensitivity training, as well as psychology – the entire militarized approach is FUBAR, sold by the rich TRAITORS, who have overthrown our democracy. We spend too much on war, death, killing – we’re a effed-up society, which will fail within 100 years, unless we grow up, stop the animal aggression, adopt less control over others, and educate the shit out of everyone.

I Have the social answers, and I am putting them into a book. All we need is the will, and unfortunately in our corrupt society, very few are uncompromised enough, unselfish and enlightened enough to see the truth. We’ve been sold a lie for 200 years, now it’s time for the Goddess to return and lead. Men have become too drunk with power, too greedy, psychotic, and a hundred other words that describe a depraved society. If we don’t fix our issues now, GOD will throw another comet or asteroid and kill us all (if we don’t nuke ourselves first).

And quite frankly, if we do, it will be no great loss – the aliens seem to be able to live without some asshole in gov’t telling you what to do. Why put up with THAT crap? I surely don’t need some 20-something telling me shit.

  • Mike June 23, 2017, 6:32 am

What a wussy coward phony cop. It is sad that this is what is in law enforcement today. Burnt out brake light is grounds for a death sentence by cop on the side of the road. The entire system from law enforcement to the justice system is corrupt. The toady jury found this coward not guilty? Not if I had been a juror, guilty as charged.

    • mason June 23, 2017, 11:54 am

      but you”re not
so shut up and move on.

      • Mike June 23, 2017, 4:19 pm

Get a grip and respect others comments. Were you one of the toady jurors or a wussy coward phony cop?

  • Eric Haulenbeek June 23, 2017, 6:30 am

Listening carefully to the audio while watching this video I was very surprised that the female voice could be heard narrating her take on what had just happened, though it differed with what Officer Yanez could be heard saying. It’s as if she was covering a scoop for the Enquirer. She didn’t even attend to her kids, leaving that up to the second police officer standing outside the right side of the vehicle. What is wrong with these people? Why do they have such an aversion to doing what they’re told when stopped by the police?

  • RetNavet June 23, 2017, 6:07 am

The officer saved the dude a lifetime of living in pure misery with a soulless bitch who calmly recorded the incident with dollar signs in her eyes from the get go.

    • mtman2 June 23, 2017, 8:50 am

Nah- been better for her to freak out screaming while jumping all around as the dumb cop pawhile in another loaded stack and blew her and the child away too because “he was still in fear for his life”- eh?
Shock and fear causes various reactions and YOU don’t get to decide such things and don’t know for sure what you or anyone will react like.

  • Rollin Shultz June 23, 2017, 5:40 am

Though I don’t feel Yanez should be jailed for murder, I do believe he shouldn’t be a police officer, at least not a patrolman. He clearly let fear get the best of him when he had may options. Seven shots is a clear indicator of that fear. His department is also at fault if there was no training for procedure during such situations. Plus a criminal about to do violence does not announce he is armed, so the officer also lacks any common sense.
In PA, officers seem to be more stable, but you never know when you might draw the short straw and get an idiot. I have thought it over and I would worry about a stop when armed as well, since I carry my sidearm under my left armpit and my wallet in my left front pocket. I pretty much can’t pull my wallet out when sitting, and officers do not want you to exit the vehicle. You could also be misjudged when reaching for your documents in the glove box. I read you are supposed to remove your firearm and place it on the roof of your vehicle before the officer approaches, but I would worry about that as well.
Even though officers are trained by procedures and superiors, they are also reverse trained daily by the MSMedia. The real battle is being waged for all of our minds and in many cases the opposition is winning.

    • Jeff Smith June 23, 2017, 8:40 am

I have been in this situation. I informed the officer that I had a concealed weapon in my waist band before reaching for my wallet. I lifted my shirt showed him the gun, reached for my wallet carefully and removed my drivers license. The officer asked to see my carry permit. He asked me what I was carrying and how I liked it. He returned my licenses, thanked me for giving him a heads up and let me slide on my failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign with only a warning. Since the officer DOES NOT know who he is stopping and that the world is full of idiots, I now put my license on the dash above the steering wheel and place my hands on the top of the steering wheel. He or she has a gun and friends with guns. Giving them shit is at best foolish. Castile was an idiot for not putting his hands on the steering wheel when the officer told him to stop reaching down. The office may have over reacted but I would have done the same. Castile died because he was stupid, plain and simple.

    • Preston June 23, 2017, 9:34 am

The way to act if you are stopped while armed is to shut off the engine, place your hands on the steering wheel, and tell the officer that your are armed and the location of the gun. Then ask the officer how he would like to proceed and DO EXACTLY AS INSTRUCTED. Don’t make any movements until instructed. Don’t resist. Don’t start announcing your “rights”. Save your arguments for the courtroom and live to get there.

  • Michael June 23, 2017, 4:39 am

As a former armed security officer what I just saw is that the driver did not comply and continued to reach downward and did not make eye contact with the Officer, Obviously his mind was totally on the weapon and when further commands were ignored that constituted a threat beyond any reasonable doubt which is mandatory for any use of deadly force. I have served in the security field and have a technical arts diploma covering this very situation including a shoot don’t shoot course which had my heart racing to the point that a controlled shot was difficult at best. The girlfriend only caused more emotional distress to the Officer. My prayers are for the child caught in the middle of a nightmare.

    • Dr Motown June 23, 2017, 7:02 am

We cannot tell from the video if “the driver did not comply and continued to reach downward and did not make eye contact with the officer.” We hear him say that he’s carrying a weapon and the cop immediately unholsters his weapon and starts to panic. It’s quite probable that the victim was just putting away the license that the cop returned to him. Neither is there anything in the victim’s voice to suggest he was escalating the encounter with the cop.

    • Henry June 23, 2017, 7:27 am

You Caucasian folks are just plain scared of colored people. With that and your natural race hate for us you justify wholesale killing of us. Shame in you. You are a godless people and sick.

How can you say that all white people are….. you would call me a rasist if I said all black people are…..when people generalize something about another group, I would encourage them to think about all the people they know from that group and ask if they are that way.

The jumpy cop murdered the man!!! Yeah he ordered the man not to move but hey maybe he was deaf!!
Why would he go for a gun with a kid & the woman in the car, especially after he told the cop that he had a gun??? And you even said you were trained for these scenarios… The bullshit corrupt cops get away with!!! I’ll tell you what though you’re a prime candidate to be a police officer ya goat-blower!!!

    • Christian June 23, 2017, 7:41 am

Really? How can you even see the drivers eyes or his hands???? Lmfao! Further more the officer who did the shooting can be seen smiling 2x as he walks away towards the camera. Also, I love how the officers waiting so long to try and save the drivers life smh. And 7 shots!?! Wow, and at close range wtf? The only problem I have with the driver/girl friend is that she seemed to be awfully calm seeing her boyfriend was shot 7x.

Also, the officer states that he never saw the gun. So how did he feel his life was in danger after the driver clearly states that I have a firearm concealed permit and says it very calmly. Then the officer freaks out and says don’t reach for it and the driver states “I’m not”. Maybe the officer is deaf?

How a jury dis not convict the officer is beyond my understanding of the law that states that any officer and it civilian can only brandish and use a firearm if they feel that their life is in imminent danger and or in fear of your life. Funny how the officer quickly states that he was in fear of his life from a firearm that could not be seen. So why was he in fear of his and his partners life? And his partner had his part handled and and yet even he had no direct line if site to back up his partner. Smells like bullshit to me. But what do I know, I’m just a guy who carries concealed as well and have been pulled over and I’ve told the officer that I was carrying with permit and he said that’s fine just keep it bolstered. Np I said. He then thanked me for letting him know. I also kept my hands on the steering wheel to make him feel more comfortable.

The officer came back and stated my tail light was out and just ran my info. Done within 12 min. And drove off and the officer was calm and polite as well as appreciative of the 3 things that I did. Hands on wheel, informed of permit to carry and was carrying. Last I pulled of the major road into a parking lot again for his safety. He thanked me for all three with his words, not 7 rounds.

      Sounds like you consoled yourself;
“Clearly’ you should never be in such a position…

    • John June 23, 2017, 10:09 am

This is a false narrative. The officer testified that Castille froze and did not move after the “Don’t move.” command. This article is propaganda put out by guns of america to make the officer look good. Read multiple sources. The officer testified that Castille did comply.

  • Mitchell castillo June 23, 2017, 4:17 am

I agree you should comply but when you voluntarily tell the officer you are carrying his immediate respond shouldn’t be yoi r next move after telling him your carrying is to grab your gun! He had about a whole second of time between learning he had a gun and becoming deathly afraid of this guy and almost unloading at point blank with a child in the back seat. Does anything give you any kind of credit? Here’s a family rolling around with a tail light out. Who announces they have a gun in the car before they then try to use it. When is it safe to tell the police you have a gun. After your in cuffs and youj apparently might have a chance to survive being not white and a concealed carrier and getting pulled over.

    • Eric Haulenbeek June 23, 2017, 6:55 am

You’ve missed both the officer’s commands to the driver and the driver ignoring those commands! How many times were those commands ignored? Why was the driver so intent on putting his hands on his weapon? With the rash of nationwide “cop shootings/killings” at epidemic levels how much time should an officer be obliged to give someone who doesn’t seem to be too interested in paying attention to him? Cops are trained to respond in specific ways to situations such as this, and that’s why he’s alive today. His safety is paramount! It only takes a second for someone to pull a weapon and draw down on a target… there’s no room for second-guessing, especially for a bystander without the level of training it takes to live another day!

      • Cornstalk June 23, 2017, 7:42 am

I didn’t see the cop on the passenger side overreact and grab his gun, so things must been legit!!!

  • SuperG June 22, 2017, 12:07 pm

As I surmised when I first heard about this…failure to comply with a lawful order. It is the prime reason in over 99% of these cases. I know the lamestream media wants to blame the cop for “over-reacting”, but he clearly wasn’t agitated at the beginning of the stop, and as the guy continued to not comply by drawing his weapon, then the cop reacted. I can only imagine what the cop was going to assume when the gun came free, as the guy was not complying. Some will want to label this racist because the guy in the passenger seat who got shot was Black, but at no time did I hear any racial epithets uttered, so that argument does not hold water.

    • David June 23, 2017, 4:15 am

That’s pure B.S. – this cop was a scared pussy that shouldn’t have had a badge. If you are too scared to handle the situation, you shouldn’t be a cop. What he should have done is instructed Orlando to put his hand on the steering wheel. You want to apologize for crappy law enforcement – go for it. Just remember that someday, the crappy law enforcement may be telling you not to reach for it when you aren’t reaching for anything. This is why the liberals don’t totally lose their grip on society – the conservatives want to be apologists for what is wrong. Own up, grow a pair and send crappy cops to jail when they deserve it.

      • Eric Haulenbeek June 23, 2017, 7:10 am

What’s BS is assuming you know better how to handle a situation of which you haven’t been a part. I’ve been pulled over a couple of times in the past and I’ve never had a problem with a cop after telling him I was armed… never! My hands never left the steering wheel of my car/truck, and I did exactly as I was told. It’s really an easy situation to deal with, even if the cop isn’t big on concealed carry (as was one of them). YOU SIMPLY DO AS YOU’RE INSTRUCTED TO DO! The problem always comes when people show they have a problem submitting to authority! “Crappy law enforcement?” No, it’s people who don’t want to do as they’re told! That’s the real problem.

The only problem I have with the driver/girl friend is that she seemed to be awfully calm seeing her boyfriend was shot 7x.Also, the officer states that he never saw the gun. So how did he feel his life was in danger after the driver clearly states that I have a firearm concealed permit and says it very calmly. Then the officer freaks out and says don\’t reach for it and the driver states \”I\’m not\”. But what do I know, I\’m just a guy who carries concealed as well and have been pulled over and I\’ve told the officer that I was carrying with permit and he said that\’s fine just keep it bolstered.

Having been an LEO, now retired and having been on both sides of the issue, I feel I have the right to reply to your sarcastic comment.
Can you see the tell tale signs that were obvious to the officer? It is easy to sit in your armchair at home and Monday morning quarterback when you have no skin in the game. Put your ass on the line, read the actions of the suspect, consider the fact he did not heed the warnings, and tell me you would have done differently, if you had the guts to even be there as Officer Yanez was.
You talk about your encounters with LEO when armed. Then go over your stated actions, as compared as to the actions of Castile. Notice a difference. If I am stopped, I turn on my emergency flashers, drive slowly to an area where the officer can safely conduct a contact while extracting license, registration, insurance info, and carry permit. All of which I place on the dash in plain view. When the officer first contacts me, I indicate I am packing and where and carefully avoid reaching in that area.
With the attitude many, apparently you are one, hold toward police officers today only an officer with a death wish walks up to a traffic stop not expecting the worst. And yes, I was involved in a traffic stop shooting which I survived because I was alert. Had I been relaxed and friendly officer Dudley Doorite, I would have been in my grave and my wife would have been a widow. Before you bad mouth some one with the guts to protect you, go walk in his shoes a years or two.

Want to see a pussy, look at the guy driving the convertible……you probably tried and couldn’t make the force. It’s easy for everyone to Monday morning from your recliner. It’s a tough fucking job keeping your sorry ass safe and having you bitch about it. High stress, lots of shooting on both sides…. don’t be a numb ass and join the crowd……think about things from all perspectives ass hole.

Your description of events is not quite accurate. You failed to mention that the man was telling the police man that he was not reaching for a gun and was complying with the police mans request for drivers license. Also failed to mention that there was a four year old child in the back seat which was lmost shot along with one of the bullets barely missing his girlfriend and hittting the center console. The policeman shot seven times at a seated man and managed to miss his target twice. You also failed to mention that his partner was near bye and was unalarmed by the actions that the driver took and at no time upholstered his
Your description is either poorly written or describes events to enlist a response that it was justified. Would the police officer have responded to a well to do white driver with his family in the car with the driver doing the same thing this black man was doing. I just don’t think so. After all he told the Cop he had a permit to carry not that he had a gun as you stated. Frankly I am getting a little sick of seeing shootings of unarmed black men and the police have gone free. If we support the right to Cary does this only apply to white people or should we justify all actions taken against people of color by the police. If the police were black and they shot white people this many times would you still feel the same way or describe it in the way you did ?

There’s NOTHING in the video to suggest he’s “failing to comply with a lawful order.” The victim is calm and cooperative from the first moment of the encounter, and volunteers that he has a weapon. The video from the girlfriend does NOT show him drawing a weapon either, as the cop implies. As soon as the victim announces he’s carrying, the cop goes into panic mode and begins SHOUTING orders at a perfectly cooperative citizen and then rapidly draws and fires within one second or so. It’s quite probable that the victim was putting away his license that the cop just returned to him.
