Some folks may buy this Weatherby WBY-X for its name alone, the Black Reaper, but you have to admit the camo pattern is pretty neat. This is the Kryptek camo pattern that we covered at their booth.

The name Weatherby alone is enough to pique the interest of most gun enthusiasts. The company’s attention to detail and renowned reputation for long-range performance in the hunting fields is unsurpassed.

But the company launched a shotgun lineup a few years ago and heads really turned when it rolled out a synthetic-stocked, pump-action shotgun in 12 gauge for self-defense. This year the company has extended its scattergun lineup with three 20-gauge offerings—one for bird hunting, while the new pair of TRs (Threat Response) are tailored for self-defense.

The PA-08 Synthetic in 20-gauge is available with either 26- or 28-inch chrome-lined barrels, comes with a black synthetic stock and to reduce glare afield the gun is finished in matte black. Lengthened forcing cones help reduce perceived recoil, making it an easy-to-use workhorse on opening day, regardless of the weather. It’s sure to offer the same kind of performance as its 12-gauge bigger brother.

Improved cylinder, modified and full chokes come with the gun and sighting is by way of a ventilated top rib, with a brass bead up front. Depending on barrel length, it tips the scales at 6.5 to 7 pounds and the tubular magazine can hold five 2 3/4-inch shotshells or four three inchers. MSRP is $399.

The TR lineup now includes a pair of new smaller 20-gauge versions, and if you take a look at the performance of buckshot in this smaller shell size, you’re not giving up much at room distances except recoil. In 20-gauge, the PA-08 TR employs the same dual-action-bar system that has proven itself in the sporting fields for years, but its metalwork is matte black. The fixed-cylinder-bore barrel is 18.5 inches long and chrome lined, and the front sight is a blade with a white dot. It has a $399 MSRP, weighs 6 pounds, length of pull is 14 inches and magazine capacity is five 2 3/4-inch shotshells.

If you just need to have a pistol-gripped shotgun, Weatherby has the answer in its PA-459 TR. This personal-defense 20 gauge has a 13.5-inch length of pull, polymer stock with rubber-textured areas and it’s finished in this year’s most popular color—black. The 18.5-inch chrome-lined barrel is also fitted with an extended removable ported cylinder choke tube. An LPA-style ghost ring rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. It tips the scales at 5.75 pounds and measures 39 inches. You can stuff four three-inch shells into the tubular magazine, or five 2 3/4 inchers. MSRP on this bad boy is $499.

If you’re looking for Weatherby rifles, though, the WBY-X line offers some edgy, unconventional camouflage and color. The company didn’t scrimp on performance, though. Built on the Vanguard Series 2 platform, they still shoot sub-MOA. After all, it’s a Weatherby.

New in this lineup are the Whitetail Bonz, with Next Bonz camo pattern and a 24-inch barrel. A smaller, 20-inch version is also available for youths. Then there’s the Kryptek TR, Black Reaper, GH2 (Girls Hunt 2), and way too many versions, colors and chamberings to list. Visit the company’s website for complete details and more information.

The PA-459 is pump. PA stands for pump action. The SA-459 is the semi auto. I have the SA-459 TR. It is intended to be a turkey gun. I have shot it just to pattern it. It seems great. It patterns excellent, soft recoil, functions well, handles well, compact, etc. Comes with x full choke so I just bought addional choke for it to shoot the hornady turkey loads that call for modified or IC chokes due to the way these shells hold the shot in a tighter pattern without the help of chokes. Nice gun for the money. If you can find one.

I just bought the PA-08 synthetic and it is the best value going. It is a very nice smooth operating shotgun. There is a video on YouTube that has a trap shooter that says he has put at least 8000 rounds through his unmodified PA-08 without a single issue. I read that Weatherby tests these guns to failure, redesigns the failed part and tests again to the next failure and redesigns that part. I understand that Weatherby puts at least 6000 rounds through these guns as the final test so they are built to last. These are made in Turkey but the quality is very good.
