Sturm Ruger brought its tribute to the Kel-Tec P3AT onto the market in 2008. Now it is Smith & Wesson’s turn, and the Massachusetts copier has added a lever safety as well as enough frame size to house its integral Crimson Trace laser apparatus. The Springfield makers continue to annoy us traditionalists by coopting traditional model names, in this instance, the Bodyguard .380 is the named model, while numbered model is simply BG380. Another design innovation is a frame mounted disassembly lever, and this .380, we think, will be easier to disassembly and clean, and to service the laser sight, than its competitors. None of the other polymer .380s of this degree of compactness are capable of securely housing a laser. Extreme overall length is 5 1/8 inches; maximum height is 4 1/8 inches from the top of the miniature Novak sight to the end of the finger rest magazine floorplate. Grip frame thickness is .777, and slide thickness is .800. Barrel length is 2 3/4 inches, the same as the revered Colt Mustang and its Sig Descendant. Action is Double Action Only, hammer fired, with frame mounted safety, slide release, and disassembly lever. Like its ancestors the P3AT and Ruger LCP, it comes with a total of only one magazine, but with two different floorplates, one finger rest and one flat.Photos show the first specimen we received of this innovative little pistol.
