Here is a Colt Single Action Army Revolver made in 1904 (serial #255xxx), in .32 WCF (.32-20) caliber, with 4.75” barrel and one piece wood grips. The metal has no original finish but is not pitted, just well handled and looked after. Mechanics are very good with firm lock up. The bore is clean with strong rifling. The grips appear to be rosewood, with a 1907 Indian Head penny mounted on the left side. The original grips were probably hard rubber, so these are a more recent addition. All serial numbers match and printing is visible. I believe the cylinder pin has been replaced and the ejector rod housing, though firm, does not completely seat into the frame. The gun test fired with no problems.
The double loop holster is probably somewhat older than the gun, but fits it well. It is in hand carved floral pattern and might date back to the 1880’s. At some point, it passed to the hands of “W. C. S.”, noted further as “Walter C. Schloredt, 310 So. Gold St., Lead, South Dakota” on the inside back of the skirt in inked script. The later initials “C.E.M” are pressed over the “W.C.S” on the middle back of the holster. No maker mark in found, but there are model numbers on the lower part of the front of the skirt
Here’s what we could find on Mr. Schloredt. He was born Walter Conrad Schloredt on June 14, 1909, and died on February 14, 1995, at the age of 85. He is buried in the Black Hills National Cemetery, located in Sturgis, SD. He was a veteran of WWII with a rank of CM in the U.S. Navy. The 1940 census lists his residence as Gold St., Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota.
This is a worthy gun/holster rig, possibly from the Dakotas. A great example of Western history! No box, papers or Colt letter accompany the gun.
