Impressions & Pricing

The Stag Valkyrie looks amazing, they have really pulled out all the stops here. The starting point was the Stag 3 Gun Elite, a performance rifle in its own right. The handguard is unique, featuring a serious weight reduction. The 18-inch Stainless Steel barrel has been fluted and comes in a heavy profile. The gun is set up as a precision rifle, to get all that can be had from the new 224 round. Also standard, a VG6 compensator, which looks fantastic on the rifle.

Down in the fire control group, the new rifle features Stag’s own 2 stage national match trigger, coated in Nickel Boron. This coating further smooths out an already great trigger, one you are sure to love.

Rounding out the package, a Magpul PRS buttstock. This is an excellent choice for a precision rifle. All of Stag’s included features are going to make this hard to beat.

The best part? The price. Though MSRP is only $1,575, right now they are on sale for $1,179. And Stag has done right by the customer. You don’t even have to buy a complete rifle. They are leading the charge in offering an upper receiver only, currently $519 in left or right configuration.

It is a very good looking rifle, and I really like the design. I only have a few reasons why I will not buy it. The first being what has been already said about it being a caliber that is not really all that compared to tried and true 5.56. The second is the 224 is still very new and I would not feel comfortable dropping that kind of cash on something that may or may not be around in the future. Lastly, I would feel more comfortable buying a bolt action rifle these days and in .308 caliber considering the attacks that continue to be aimed at AR type rifle platforms. The sad truth is there are more and more rules, restrictions, and bans being put in place or considered than ever before and I think it is unfair and sucks. I don’t want to be put in the position to have to turn in a large portion of my gun collection. I fight against such things but it is not looking good for AR types.

So how is this round better than 224Grendel? Hint its not.

I don’t see the point of such a round unless it is launched from a very long barrel. I am intrigued by this round. For my use I would go with an ignorantly heavy barrel of 24-28″ and plop it on a lower with a Geissele SSA-E and Magpul PRS. The broad selection of bullets and weights is intoxicating. For varmints, a 69 gr SMK or one of those exotic 70 grain copper rounds the Navy guys use launched at 3200+ would be interesting. The heavier rounds, capable of being rained on a target beyond 1,000 yards, still supersonic would be a force multiplier.

Hopefully Stag has gotten better at customer service. My experience: Ordered a rifle and accessories, $1600. I knew there would be a wait. 3 months later got an email that my order was cancelled and I was getting a refund due to them having a 6-8 month backlog. Contacted them and said “take your time, I’m in no rush”. Nope. Order cancelled, no options. 2 months later they contacted me and said they were caught up and asked me to order again. Sorry, no longer interested. My business went elsewhere.

the 224 does with a 90 grain bullet about what the 223 does with an 80 grainer,,,,,,,no big deal there,,,,,hype and bullshit,,,,,,

.224 Valkyrie: A solution to a niche that either doesn\’t exist or else is one that is all ready largely filled… Consumerism is the antithesis of free will…
