SHOT Show 2020, the year of the 5.7x28mm! While some of you may be familiar with CMMG’s previous entry into that caliber, with their 5.7 Banshee, they’ve tackled it again with a different approach.
While a number of companies make pistol caliber carbines (PCCs), most use standard factory magazines, such as ones chambered in 9mm using Glock Magazines. And while CMMG does have a 5.7 PCC that uses FN 5.7 pistol magazines, they went a different route in 2020.
The newest version of CMMG’s 5.7 uses a standard mil-spec AR lower receiver. Rather than shrinking dimensions and using a pistol sized magazine, CMMG engineered a larger magazine roughly the same dimensions as a standard capacity 30-round AR magazine.

This does a number of things for the shooter. On the one hand, if you choose to buy a 5.7 upper receiver, it is just a matter of dropping it onto a lower receiver you already own. No proprietary mag well or magazine block needed. And more importantly, in my opinion, you have a rifle sized magazine. This lets you get good reps of training carbine skills while using a pistol caliber. It also increases the capacity to 40 rounds in a magazine… which is awesome!
While a lot of people don’t really get the excitement around the 5.7, this is because you probably are already into shooting. Think about it from the perspective of someone new to it. Now whether introducing new shooters, young or old, you have a fun rifle that mirrors your standard 5.56 AR with less recoil. As a grizzled veteran, you may not care, but personally, when introducing my kids to shooting, this is a big deal.
The CMMG 5.7 will be available in 5″, 8″ and 16″ configurations in both their Banshee (Pistol) line as well as Resolute (Rifle) line. All the barrels are threaded 1/2×28 to accept any muzzle devices or suppressors. The pistols and rifles will be available Q1 with an MSRP from $850 to $1,350.

I understand the recoil and noise level are diminished with the 5.7, going by what I’ve read on the FN. If that’s true, would not the same be true for the Banshee?
How about the MPX, Scorpion or something without a long ass buffer tube in 57?
if in the very slim chance that this grizzled veteran found himself in the middle of a real life gunfight i would prefer to be armed with the 57 with it’s high velocity, mag capacity and negligible recoil over any other pistol or carbine cartridge available.
not for the kids as the author suggests.

i’m not so sure about stupid but they have no practical purpose other than a very noisy range toy.
whenever i see someone show up with one i pack up and leave. there is no adequate ear protection and forget about concentration.
I prefer a 16″ carbine or better still a 20″ barreled rifle. That said I have just one AR pistol upper. A 10″ in 300 Blk out. I use it and hunt with it suppressed with both subsonic and supersonic. It’s very accurate out 150 yds with supersonic and accurate enough for hunting at a 100 yds with subsonic. It’s also not very noisy even with supers.
Wonder, but doubt if their going to offer just the upper and mags? To be honest I like their FN mag AR pistols. But for such a small round I don’t see the need or for me want such a big pistol just to be able to shoot the 5.7. I’ve considered buying FN’s Five Seven as it still is the best out with a cold hammer forged barrel and the fact they created the round and have built guns for it that are very reliable. If Rugers new Addition to the 5.7 world used FN mags I’d consider buying it, but they have their own and with a mag fed gun usually it’s the mag that is the issue for malfunctions so I’ll let them either prove they work great or give them time to fix the issue. I’m very interested in the 5.7 round for the high velocities, accuracy, low recoil, etcetera, so maybe if they offer just the upper and mags are a realistic price I’d consider buying that setup but never their completed no offense over priced AR’s.
I believe the Ruger 57 accepts FN mags.
Nope, it uses Rugers proprietary mags.
