First State to Ratify Constitution Now Wants to Abolish It: Anti-gun Bills Are Back in Delaware

Authors Columns Justin Opinion

The small state of Delaware isn’t known for much. But one of the things it has long celebrated is that it was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, making it “The First State,” as our license plates proudly display.

But in recent years, governor after governor has scrambled to create new slogans for the state, possibly because they are ashamed of any affiliation to the Constitution and what it stands for. Gov. John Carney, Delaware’s current gubernatorial leader, would like to see the state become more like New Jersey – if one could even consider that an aspiration.

After being unable to pass several anti-gun bills in the General Assembly in 2018, Delaware’s liberals are back at it again. And as if to display a “we’ll show you” attitude, this year’s bills are even more egregious than those squashed in 2018.

Three new anti-gun bills were introduced this week in Delaware’s Senate:

  • SB-68 would ban nearly every semi-auto firearm in existence, once again focusing the abolitionists’ blind rage on the general description of the objects they hate;
  • SB-69 would establish a requirement for every law-abiding citizen to acquire (at their own expense) a purchase permit to obtain any firearm. They might as well nickname the bill “Jim Crow,” because it will certainly have a devastating effect on low-income families. But wait, there’s more – it would also establish a searchable database of registered gun owners;
  • SB-70 is the cookie-cutter magazine ban that would make any standard capacity magazine capable of holding more than 15 rounds illegal – even though there is no evidence to suggest that magazine capacity and crime are related in any way. It works retroactively which means current owners would have to turn them over or else face misdemeanor (for the first offense) or felony (for each subsequent offense) charges.  SB-70 is confiscation of lawfully owned property without compensation which seemingly runs afoul of the Fifth Amendment.

To create the illusion of support for the legislation that their out-of-state masters have prescribed, Delaware Dems bussed in a handful of redshirt Bloomberg-funded “Moms,” who are demanding that good people be stripped of their freedom. They literally arrived in a bus that was arranged for them. It is estimated that there were about 30 or so “moms” supporting these bills.

In sharp contrast, a true grassroots army arrived on the scene.  Hundreds of pro-gun citizens showed up at Legislative Hall in Dover Wednesday to protest and oppose these bills. These people arrived on their own dime, many taking time from their jobs and busy schedules on a weekday. And yet, the anti-gun legislators and their partners in media will insist that there is a groundswell of support for their unconstitutional plans.

Legislation like this is spreading from state to state, funded by Bloomberg and others like him. Your country is literally being bought and sold from underneath you. Stop looking at the national level for threats to your freedom, because while you are, it is being taken from you by those in your own backyard.

Many of those in power view overwhelming opposition to anti-gun legislation as an obstacle to be overcome, rather than a mandate to follow. This, in a nutshell, is the new government that has been propped up by New York billionaires with Napoleon complexes, and agendas. If your state government hasn’t yet been bought and paid for by these tyrants – don’t worry, it will be soon.

    If they think a ban will work, why not ban crime?

    ‘moms demand action’ group suggests to me that women ain`t smart enough to vote. They should stay home,cook,sew,and have babies. And otherwise, do their husbands bidding.

    I left Delaware back in 1976 as soon as I graduated school, got a job and saved some money.
    I was born and raised there. Even then the state was far too restrictive and left leaning for my tastes.
    A few years ago I got in touch with one of my former classmates who told me that following graduation, everyone scattered.

    Born an raised in Delaware..to the best of my knowledge Delaware has always been a dem.state..but there is no Democratic party no more..it’s now the far left liberal party an they are all about government control…the only way to ensure your rights is to vote the liberals out of every city, state, an federal Office…if not it’s going to get worse a lot worse….

    The scary part of all this is that these poor souls do not realize that a government disarming it’s people is not a good thing. I can not understand what the point of history is if people do not at least consider it in making decisions. It is true that some people shoot other people and there is no point in going into all the other ways people are killed. I actually feel sorry for them because the constant indoctrination from so many sources that they are being protected has formed into a delusion that makes them act. At so many junctures we are being told we are being protected. At the doctors office HIPPA is protecting us. The Police are protecting us. The Military is protecting us from landing crafts at our beaches with enemy forces. Call Visa and they are protecting us. Ebay is protecting us. Cameras at our homes are protecting us. People are so dependent and so apathetic they can not do anything for themselves. They take no responsibility for their own safety and security. My car from 1991 has automatic seat belts because it is protecting me or I am too damn stupid to buckle up for safety. The reality is that none of this protects me.

    Was seriously going to retire there soon with my wife from New Jersey. Not now…

    • Justin Opinion April 16, 2019, 8:55 pm

      Frank – No offense to you, and I hope you’ll understand my comment here when I say that a huge influx of people from NJ over the past decade or more to either retire more comfortably or just escape insane taxes has caused the same problem here that Californians have caused in places like Phoenix and Denver. They come from a Government-worshiping environment and don’t know anything else – next thing you know, they are electing politicians who promise to create the same environment in the new place. Some people are not only comfortable in their chains – they want everyone else to be equally comfortable, for their own good. The fact that you commented, means you are a rare exception – but I’ve been watching it happen for years.

    Please people, it’s not about crime anymore, it’s about showing you the gun owners we can get you if we want. It is as simple as that.

  • DW April 12, 2019, 7:31 am

    I am pretty new to Delaware but came from New Jersey, so needless to say I was amazed at being able to go into a store and buy a gun and walk out with it and not be required to have a purchase permit to do so. It was even nicer to be able to apply for a concealed carry and actually get one, something in NJ that would likely only happen upon hell freezing over. Now I see DE aspiring to be more like NJ in more than one way, and I am not happy about it at all.
    One thing that we the people could do in order to call some serious attention to our unhappiness with our government both on the state and federal level is to cut off there source of income, seriously in the end we the people control the purse strings of our government, if they are getting our tax money they don’t have any money. We The People need to start demonstrating this to the people who would think they are our masters, which they aren’t. After all taxation is theft anyway, so isn’t it high time we start seriously looking at just cutting them off. They surely can’t come after all of us if everyone gets on board.

    • Smitty April 12, 2019, 10:08 am

      DW. They already are coming after all of us. We are the ones that half to decide where the line is and what our reaction will be when they cross it. In the meantime they continue to attack us with a million papercuts.

      Our problem is we really do want peace and prosperity and we want to continue our everyday lives and be productive. These clowns despise all of this. We have got to sacrifice now for the future of our families and our country. Many that did sacrifice never tasted the fruits of their labor. Are we really willing?

    I know that the corporate laws in Delaware are pretty primitive, but do they still need posses to chase down runaway slaves?

  • Darcie April 12, 2019, 6:26 am

    If they started hanging people for treason again, this bullshit would stop.

  • Ruth April 11, 2019, 7:42 pm

    I stand with the constitution and my second amendment right to bear arms and protect myself. I believe our rights as taxpayers are being illegally taken away from us little by little

  • J April 11, 2019, 4:41 pm

    These bills in Delaware are similar to the bills proposed by Democrats in Illinois and other states. They are coordinating their efforts to get similar anti-gun bills passed into law in all Democrat controlled states. Not one of these bills will stop criminals.
