You may have read this week that the NRA was prohibiting members from using revolvers and 1911s in their level 1 Carry Guard courses. Well, that is no longer the case.
Jason J. Brown, the Media Relations Manager for NRA Carry Guard, stated the following in an email to GunsAmerica:
In response to clear feedback surrounding the NRA Carry Guard Level I course announcement, we have modified the required firearm platforms as well as our site language to clearly articulate how firearms will be used in the class.
Bottom line: our decision to not include 1911s and revolvers as primary firearms in our initial Level I course was a mistake, and we appreciate the feedback we have received from the firearms community.
In response to the clear and overwhelming demand for these firearms to be used throughout the entire course, our instructors have decided to accommodate all safe, reliable handguns with a capacity of 6 rounds or more. Firearms with less than 6 rounds of capacity will still be allowed as secondary platforms.
We welcome anyone serious about building the skills necessary to defend themselves and their families to attend our NRA Carry Guard Level I course, beginning in July.

Clay, GunsAmerica’s resident firearms trainer, had some fun blasting the NRA for the ban (see NSFW video below). I’ve since informed him that the NRA has reversed course on the matter. All is well now.
I just want to say that those burns and jabs were all in good fun. We like the NRA. We support the NRA. And we’re glad they took quick action to fix this mistake.

I agree. I think it’s a combination of a lack of a good microphone (lapel?) and the cadence of his speech (he speaks way too fast, in run-on sentences). He also seems to mumble his words.
I’m a huge NRA supporter, life member since the day Clinton stepped into the White Crib.
That said, Clay, you are absolutely SPOT ON. In everything you have said. This Carry Guard bit is pure Clown Ops. Everything about it. From the clickish instructors (we are the only ones who can instruct and no you can’t come into our clubhouse unless you are invited NO MATTER your background…) to this latest rendition of dumbassery of the guns you can’t bring to class. Please. NRA, get a handle on this buffoonery.
Whoever thinks the NRA is a friend of gun owners needs to wake up. They are in it for the money. If anyone doubts, take a look around and see how often they shirttail on the backs of true gun rights activist, or sponsor bad legislation. They did it in Wyoming, then tried to deny it. Their liaisons are mercenaries with no dog in the fight, so are ineffective at best and anti-gun at worst. They never even called Joaquin Jackson to task on his anti-gun rhetoric much less kicked him off the board as they should have.

Like all K street whores, the NRA’s primary concern is to keep themselves relevant and “needed”. Problem-reaction-solution.
They work with the “boogie-men” to keep the American gun owners in fear for their rights. Not to mention that they insult you to your face. Having “Bring-Em-Young” on their board and acting as the public face of the NRA is tantamount to calling all gun owners slobbering, inbred rednecks.
Can someone tell me why the NRA banned 1911 firearms from this class in the first place?

Im a NRA life member and think they are starting to look like bullys, they should be ashamed of their actions. I am also a member of USCCA who has a better plan than NRA. I realize NRAare foremost in protecting the 2A. But to bar USCCA from the convention, and threaten them with a police officer “that we hired”. The person making that statement needs reprimanded. Take me off the rolls please.
I still haven’t gotten over their banning the USCCA and other insurance suppliers from the annual member meeting in Atlanta earlier this year. I have no use for their “Carry Guard” anything. And I still will not send them any money until they apologize and make things right.
It seems USCCA is more interested in selling insurance than anything else. We all know that insurance is a cash cow. I didnt renew my member ship….
All the bitching by “experienced shooters” is what forced the NRA and associates to change the Course requirements. We always need to protect the interest of people new to firearms, they will be our future torch bearers. What the NRA once again lost sight of was “they were providing a paid Service” and THEY needed to provide accommodation for the wide spectrum of entry level shooters, most with revolvers! Not the first time the NRA fell on their sword, won’t be the last either.
“Falling on one’s sword” is generally used to describe a deliberate act which acknowledges that all is lost.
I would say NRA has once again committed the obvious godawful pun of “shooting themselves in the foot.”
