At around 1 a.m. Monday morning, 28-year-old Robert Young broke into the home of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent.

Mr. Young, who had a criminal history that included grand theft, carrying a concealed weapon, and misdemeanor criminal mischief, smashed through a sliding glass window to gain entrance into the residence.

Once inside, Young “confronted the victim inside the residence,” Sgt. Carlos Rosario with Miami-Dade Police told CBS Miami.

Why was Young there?  What were his intentions?  The answers to those questions are not clear at the moment.

But the resident, who has been identified as Maria Otero wasn’t going to wait around and find out.  She grabbed her government-issued .40-caliber Smith & Wesson and shot Young, killing him.

“The victim is a Customs and Border Protection officer,” Rosario said. “[She] retrieved her firearm, shots were fired and the subject has been deceased here at the residence.”

Otero isn’t just a rank and file agent.  A 25-year veteran of the agency, she is the Chief of the Miami – Tampa Field Office for Customs and Border Protection.

Was Young purposely targeting Ms. Otero?  Hard to say.  Investigators say that the two were not acquainted.

“At this time, we have no indication that she knew the intruder,” Rosario said.

Lott: 11 Cases Where Permit Holders Stopped Public Shootings

The investigation is still ongoing.  Ms. Otero has been placed on administrative leave.  Standard procedure because she used her duty pistol in the shooting.

Neighbors were shocked to learn about the incident.

“(I was) a bit surprised, a bit shocked, but you know, it’s a very quiet neighborhood around here,” Steve Leonard said.

“Well, it is Miami, so it can happen, but not in this neighborhood. This tends to happen in other neighborhoods,” added Leonard. “But this area has scared me always a bit because we’re so close to U.S. 1, so it’s a quick getaway.”

From all the law abiding citizens, Ms. Otero THANK YOU.

  • Dan February 21, 2018, 9:02 pm

Unfortunately, the way Trump is already changing his tune about Second Amendment rights, law enforcement officers may end up being the only ones able to have a gun to defend themselves with!

Fantastic job young lady, one less to worry about, who knows what would have happened to you, or his next victim. Now this is not rocket science, unless your a dum dum like Bloomberg, he no enter house, he live, he enter house he dies. If the system did not make excuses for them like Bloomberg and so many others for decades, we would have fewer of these scumbags doing what they think is ok around today. So again bravo, bravo, bravo. Two to the chest one to head ensures that ths scumbag is most likely dead.

  • Leonard Feinman February 16, 2018, 5:25 pm

Good job. It may be difficult for some in the aftermath of the killing, but it was the right thing to do. Nobody wants to be an executioner, but this does save time and money and stops the bad actor in his tracks. Florida is just a bit safer today, and just in time.

  • Dan Knowlton February 16, 2018, 1:09 pm

I feel sorry for Ms. Otero – I wish she had not had to do that to protect herself for any reason. I feel NO concern for the piece of trash she had to shoot!
My prayers are with you Ms. Otero!

  • High Plains Drifter February 16, 2018, 12:54 pm

Its so hard to understand why the police profile black men. Just can’t understand it. 🙂

    • Jerry Johnson February 16, 2018, 5:12 pm

Please first define profile, but befor doing so read the US Supreme Court & Appellate Courts’ rulings regarding police profiling. Then should your defination agree, proceed. If no agreement, then you have no business making that comment. Which you obviously do not have.

      Reconsider.

    • Kwilliams February 16, 2018, 11:59 pm

It’s amazing the level of ignorance displayed on this site! Anyone breaking into a home when the homeowners are there has bad intentions and should be dealt with. The lack of profiling everyone places our children at risk at schools, and multiple victims at risk from a single perpetrator. So let’s profile every race based on their propensity to commit certain crimes!

      • Jennings Bunn II February 18, 2018, 8:46 am

Absolutely the truth. For the idiots against profiling, you best wake up to the fact that a recognized portion of our population is responsible for the highest percentage of crimes. Call it profiling, or good common sense.

    • Cal Blumhorst November 20, 2020, 7:40 am

All cats are gray in the dark. If someone breaks into our home, the amount of melanin in their skin will not be a concern nor an easily discerned determinant of our responsive actions.

Most civilized states, like Florida and our home state of Ohio, adhere to Castle Doctrine. As such, the action of unlawfully breaking into a home is prima facie evidence of intent, ability and means to kill or cause great bodily harm. An intruder crossing a home’s threshold in such a manner tacitly absolves a homeowner of wrongdoing in the use of lethal force.

(Note: I am not an attorney so I’m stating only my personal and law-abiding civilian understanding of the law. Be sure YOU understand all pertinent local and state laws before presumptively taking lethal action.)

  • Mike Watkins February 16, 2018, 12:28 pm

  • Jim February 16, 2018, 11:50 am

Good! Now it is a shame that a human life was lost BUT, it was not the life of a productive person. We need to go back to teaching people morals and values and how to live a life worthwhile.

The CBP Officer (not Agent ) as the media indicated, carried a P2000 H & K chambered in .40 S & W. Sometimes the media gets the facts a little wrong, or, frequently, even a lot wrong. These Officers re-qualify quarterly and are required to maintain proficiency with their firearm. Training being the key to success in most of life’s situations. But in this case the details don’t really matter, the important thing is that the good guy/girl continues to protect and serve and the bag guy is effectively, efficiently removed from the planet. Good job Officer Otero.

Let us be kind I worked at Brunswick as a firearms instructor one of my girl friends in Atlanta and we went to a very nice and very expensive Mexican restaurant in Atlanta. I am a first generation American my family comes from Spain and my first language is Spanish although I was born in the United States. My mother was a typical Spanish mother she could really hold a grudge she would not allow the language of witches (English) in our home she kept muttering something about an Armanda whatever that means. When I can see someones first language is Spanish I automatically switch to Spanish. The waitress said I spoke wonderful Spanish I thank her and told it helped in my work. I totally forgot I was wearing a U.S. Border Patrol tee shirt and she screamed “La Migra!’ Honestly I tried to pay the bill but there was not anyone to collect the money. Really.

I hope this makes all citizens aware that their neighborhood is insulated from this type of criminal. It can happen to anybody, anywhere and at any time. Glad to see that the local populace will be spared the costs of trials and incarceration of this guy.

    • John Plichta February 16, 2018, 12:40 pm

What do you mean insulated? Are you saying that no one can be hurt in this neighborhood? They are so trained and protected that even if someone comes into their home, no one would ever be harmed? If that is your insinuation, you are extremely mistaken.

      • Captain Bob January 10, 2020, 3:03 pm

John Plichta: I think that JoeFoam MEANT to say, “not insulated” but missed the “not’ and it changed the whole meaning of his post.

    • Wade February 16, 2018, 1:27 pm

Solid point, criminals don’t rob houses in lower socioeconomic areas, they prey in the areas where the reward is worth the risk or so they hope; obviously not this time.
As for Mr. Young… actions have consequences, perhaps someone should have taught him that at a much younger age!!!

  • John February 16, 2018, 8:53 am

Lets hear the reply from all the gun grabbers, come on Feinstein, Bloomberg and others speak up.

    • Larry February 16, 2018, 3:25 pm

Was that guy paied to go skare or kill her for some reasons ??? I wonder the “real” story behind all this.

Well done Ms. Otero and keep it loaded and handy because there is many more like this filthy trash out there..

  • Mark E Johnson February 16, 2018, 7:42 am

Yet another case for home protection. Have your chosen weapon close at hand and ready for action at all times. You don’t know when a monster will visit your home. And for all those who have educated and registered to carry concealed, good on ya and keep your senses at yellow.

  • ScranunSlim February 16, 2018, 6:34 am

Because she’s a woman and a fed, the local DA might spare her the grueling “instant replay” — “What did you see that made you think the intruder was armed?”  “Did you warn him you were armed?” “What immediate threat did he pose to you – what did he say or do that made you shoot him?”

    • Drew February 16, 2018, 8:34 am

What threat did he present ? Are you serious? This punk broke into her home at 1am . Should she have made him some coffee and asked him if he intended to kill her ? You are a sheep stay with your flock moron .She did a great job .

    • Russ February 16, 2018, 9:08 am

You are aware of the Castle doctrine?? He broke into her house, she had no duty to retreat. Plain and simple, she defended herself. I hope you never get on a jury. You need to read up on the laws in Florida, where residents have the right to defend themselves.

    • David Shaver February 16, 2018, 11:10 am

Let’s see… he smash d through a glass door. That’s enough probibcation. Or are just that stupid?

    • Mas February 16, 2018, 11:11 am

Drew and Russ missed out ScranunSlim’s sarcasm, which was the message in his post.
Drew quickly resort to a nasty name calling “moron” without understanding the OP sarcasm was pointed at the fact that being a Fed she does not have to face those ridiculous questions by the DA like us common citizens do.

      • Slinger February 16, 2018, 2:43 pm

Yes, those two missed the ‘devil’s advocate’ intentions here.

      • Larry February 16, 2018, 3:28 pm

Yep – he was trying to make a point guys, take a breath!

      • ScranunSlim February 16, 2018, 5:22 pm

EXACTLY! And THANK YOU for splainin’ it to the Impairedistas.

    • Cal Blumhorst November 20, 2020, 7:51 am

In reality, I suspect the woman will face double-grilling. First from local authorities, intent on properly clearing a homicide case, and then, from her superiors, since she used her issued “service” weapon, as I believe was mentioned in the article. I’m confident her two days of leave will involve paperwork – lots of it!

  • Kenny from The Fed February 16, 2018, 6:09 am

Just retired from Federal Bureau of Prisons. I have seen some of these bad guys come back to jail after being out for 4-5 years. Some make it, some don’t, some also kill people after being released. I had an inmate that worked for us, he seem like he would be OK once he was released. In 2012, I think, he was released. A year or two later, a coworker showed me his mugshot in an article around West Patterson, N.J. Don’t know the particulars, but he bashed someones head in with a set of dumb bells. Now he’s in state prison for murder. He was one of the ones I knew would make it. I will be doing my course of fire qualification for my CCL this month or next month. There are a lot worse guys in Federal Prison than this guy. I’m glad this Federal Officer was able to protect herself and her family from this POS, that probably has been in and out of jail like most of these clowns that continue to think it’s OK to hurt or kill others, ” As long as I get mine “. You guys have NO IDEA how bad some of these career criminals are. I was only at a Low security facility. Lots of Pedofiles, drug dealers, rapist, and murders. You get ” Good time ” if you have been a model inmate, and are sent to a lower custody facility, if you have been ” Good “. Peace Love and Hair Grease, and watch your six.

    • Jennings Bunn II February 18, 2018, 9:09 am

All the more reason to carry out the death penalty. When there is absolutely no question that the perp did the crime (murder, etc.) why should tax payers have to pay to keep them alive? Not a doubt that criminals are treated better than the victim. Execution should be swift following trial, no longer years on “Death Row”. Also, the punishment should fit the crime.

  • Gourdhead February 16, 2018, 5:33 am

These people have all become disenfranchised from our society by an apathetic Congress. As long as there is a system that “handles” this riffraff; interestingly, a system that Congress had approved, Congress can continue to steer its course down the path of corruption, the effect of which leaves more and more people confused, poor, and politically emasculated.

That said, we all make choices and this dude obviously didn’t have the brains to case the residence of hie intended victim. Darwin rules.

IF IT WERE UP TO DEMS AND LIBS SHE WOULD BE DEAD AND PERP WOULD BE HAILED AS THE VICTIM OF RACISM FOR BEING ARRESTED OF COMMITTING A CRIME.
