California DOJ Falls Behind On Tracking Persons Who Shouldn’t Own Guns

Kamala Harris, CA Attorney General.

A recent audit of California’s Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed the agency has seriously fallen behind on keeping track of those persons who own guns, but shouldn’t.

In 2013, auditors provided eight recommendations to help the DOJ cross-reference legal gun owners against those with “severe mental illness or criminal history” to locate any anomalies. However, the most recent audit showed they had “failed over 18 months to fully implement seven of eight recommendations.”

The DOJ had a goal of a queue containing no more than 600 persons who are potentially prohibited from owning firearms, but in the first quarter of 2015 alone they had nearly 3,600 in their queue.

Talk about backlogged.

According to California Attorney General and U.S. Senatorial candidate Kamala Harris (D), the fault lies primarily with a lack of staffing, but he’s also pointing a finger at “the continued strong sales of firearms in California.”

Of course, many Californians are scooping up as many firearms as monetarily possible in light of the never-ending supply of increasingly strict gun legislation.

Some might even say the problem was self-induced.

However, according to Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-San Diego), the DOJ has no one to blame but themselves.

“The Legislature gave Harris’ office $24 million nearly two years ago to clear the backlogs and received assurances it could be done within a year,” said Huff.

The most recent audit showed there could be as many as “257,000 people from before 2006” who “own guns in violation of state law.”

This is the norm for California residents. Our state lawmakers think the right to bear arms is a privilege not a RIGHT as guaranteed by our Constitution. Like sheep, little by little our rights are led to the slaughter house for extinction. Every time there is a killing anywhere, the idiots in Sacramento rush to add more restrictions to already too many. When will they get it through their heads a criminally minded individual will acquire a gun regardless of how many laws banning them are in effect.
