California Reps. Call Gun-Carrying Congresspeople 'Unhinged,' Introduce Bill to Ban Guns
Rep. Jared Huffman doesn’t believe congresspeople should be allowed to have firearms on Capitol grounds.

Two California representatives in the U.S. House introduced a bill on Monday that would ban congresspeople from carrying firearms on Capitol grounds.

Citing the possibility of an “unspeakable tragedy,” Rep. Jared Huffman called his colleagues who wish to carry firearms “unhinged” and said their guns “make all of us less safe.”

“Threats of political violence are on the rise, and it makes all of us less safe if Members of Congress and their staff don’t have to comply with gun safety standards,” said Rep. Huffman in a press release announcing his bill. “Members should not be above the law.”

His fellow California representative, Jackie Speier, joined him in co-sponsoring the legislation.

“Statistics show that accidents happen when there are firearms around. The existing exemption for Representatives increases the risk of gun violence for Members, staff, and the public. It’s long past time we close the Member loophole and protect all who enter the Capitol complex,” Rep. Speier said.

A 1967 law exempted members of Congress from adhering to the same rules that prevent members of the public from carrying firearms on capitol grounds. Several Republican members of Congress have been outspoken about their intention to carry firearms in Congress, but Rep. Huffman believes the exemption is “anachronistic.”

“When the rule was passed, the DC was having race riots and the Capitol was not a very secure place. Members, mostly white men, were afraid and wanted to have their own guns just in case,” he said in a Facebook post.

Huffman argues that the Capitol is today “one of the most fortified and secure places on earth” and members no longer need to worry about defending themselves while at work.

“Even the most paranoid member of Congress could not justify why they need guns at work. Yet some members insist on it. And the ones who are loudest about it always seem to be the most brazen and reckless — the ones most likely to cause an accident or something worse,” he said.

Huffman has taken special aim at the most vocal pro-gun members of Congress. Last week, he used a tweet from Louisiana member Clay Higgins as proof of the necessity of his new bill.

Higgins came under fire in September for his alleged response to protests over the police shooting death of Trayford Pellerin. According to KATC, he threatened to kill the protestors if they showed up in his neighborhood or where he worked.

Huffman has also criticized incoming Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert, who attended many campaign events with a Glock in a leg holster and said she plans to carry at the Capitol. Huffman linked to an article about Boebert in his announcement of his new bill.

Huffman dismissed the argument that congresspeople should enjoy the same Second Amendment rights as other Americans at work.

“Cue the predictable fake outrage and cries of 2nd Amendment infringement. It is just a matter of time before an unspeakable tragedy happens, and I prefer to prevent it,” he said.

In a way he’s right. The laws should be corrected to allow all citizens the free exercise of their rights, not just congressmen.

  • JonsOn October 25, 2021, 4:03 pm

The pin heads from Commiefornia need to resign from congress if they don’t like others carrying guns. This is the United States of America and we have the 2nd amendment. Jared needs to get over his leftist loving self. This pile of crap is probably one of those responsible for some of the draconian unconstitutional gun laws in CA.

who on earth keeps voting these nazi a..hole into to office are there that many nazis here in the United States if so god help us all

  • BarrybinInhalin January 15, 2021, 8:57 am

They won’t be happy until the only guns around are in the hands of criminals or Congressional/gubmint security.

  • To t January 5, 2021, 3:36 am

These soy boy Karen’s need to mind their own business. Their irrational fear of people with guns for self defense is laughable. How exactly is (it) he less safe? Does he think the gun will seek him out on its own.

The left is nuts, they subvert fighting crime, encouraging riots and generally coddle criminals. While attempting to disarm women in Washington DC? Insanity.

I’m from California and I’m not gonna move to your free state don’t worry!!
I’m gonna stay and fight these commies here. I crave liberty and freedom that my fellow brothers take for granted everyday. Don’t forget about us behind enemy lines, fight these evil fuckers.

  • Frederick Ellis January 4, 2021, 12:22 pm

These are supposedly elected Americans who swore an Oath to protect and uphold all of the Constitution not just the parts they want to exploit! Let’s see these Socialist Commies try to disarm the Gangs of LA and Orange County or all the other gangs like the Mexican Cartels, the Asian gangs or even their Democratic voters who advocate defunding the police. At least we have a chance to protect our families legally now. Once Joey gets crowned and sends the gestapo to all white Americans homes to take their guns it will be easier for the criminals to be safe to do what they want because they aren’t going to wait around until the Social Workers come to talk them out of robbing or killing whomever they want. Swords, knives, Crossbows and Hammers will be our defense until they ban them and then we’ll have to resort to baseball bats and shovels! I live in a small rural City and it still takes 10-15 minutes for a police officer to get to my house! Only when a politician or a very wealthy person is involved do you get a quicker response! So have a nice safe New Year and beyond if you make it?

    • Bob Clark January 3, 2021, 2:57 pm

Best comment I’ve seen in a while. It’s the amazing lack of outrage (and truth) that has allowed the whack-a-doos to progress this far.

  • BobtheCynic January 1, 2021, 11:12 pm

The “Unspeakable Tragedy” of which he speaks has already happened when the people who elected him sent him to Washington. I think he can best serve his constituents by returning to California and becoming the fertilizer for our fruits and vegetables.

  • Ken January 1, 2021, 10:58 pm

Maybe if someone made those congressmen realize that they wouldn’t have been injured if they had had the means to protect themselves… maybe they might learn to appreciate the benefits of being armed.

California. I was at an airport one time long ago going from lounge to lounge during several flight delays and got drunk as a skunk and then finally boarded the wrong plane, passed out and woke up in California. I quit drinking after that. California is no place I ever want to visit again. I was glad to leave.

  • Rocket Scientist January 1, 2021, 3:13 pm

Wait a minute: This psycho from Kalifornia obviously has the erroneous notion that our government is a democracy (three wolves debating lunch with one sheep) rather than a republic.
OK, thus by his own logic, he is actually the one “unhinged” as he is amongst the “few” rather than the “many” because in any mental institution the insane can easily outnumber and become the “sane”…

He also completely missed his Civics classes in high school since 2A was specifically instituted to guarantee The Bill of Rights and — if necessary — remove tyrannical members of government such as himself.

  • Rocket Scientist January 1, 2021, 2:57 pm

May I again propose that we sell (if not give) Kalifornia back to Mexico?
The United States can get rid of this cancer, and get our fruits and vegetables at even lower prices. Of course, need to relocate the Wall first…

I think what you are doing is fine, and many of our Judges do the same thing. My question is do you allow your citizens to carry into your meetings? Most Government Offices are Gun Free Zone, thus my questions. I have been asking for National CC for way over 20 years, and I got the first CC permits issued in SD about 40 years ago, but no go on National CC. I have also been asking why it is ok for some people to carry in some places, but the rest of us cannot legally do the same. Same thing with our LE whom I support, but I also believe their training is a little over the top on how quick to shoot and how many rounds they shoot before taking a peek how the person they are shooting is responding (yes they can tell after a few rounds what comes next), but I digress. What I would like to see is if it is OK for our LE to act and defend themselves in a curtain way why cannot we be allowed the same rules?

  • a11four1 January 1, 2021, 1:44 pm

Quote direct from article…….including quote of the CA representative.
“Citing the possibility of an “unspeakable tragedy,” Rep. Jared Huffman called his colleagues who wish to carry firearms “unhinged” and said their guns “make all of us less safe.”

Note recent use of same sounding, but unequal verbiage. Safe, less safe, safer, unsafe; all distinctly different words.

Referring to phrase “less safe”, which I take to mean exactly that, compared to ‘unsafe’, how does wearing a face mask, maintaining social distance, avoiding crowds etc, make us “safe”?
Ponder a moment why the more correct, I’d say perfectly accurate usage of ‘safer’ is avoided throughout liberal media and their general recommendations.

Then apply same criteria to pandemic, crisis, lockdown and other favored terms.

  • Roger Bryant January 1, 2021, 1:15 pm

Better to be unhinged and carrying a gun, than to be hinged and hanging without one!

  • Paul L. Lenig January 1, 2021, 12:36 pm

America appears to be going downhill on a greased track. California must be brainwashing their children from first day of school or else there is some drug in the air. Their expressed thoughts and opinions are 180 degrees away from real Americans and the Founding Fathers. They would rewrite the Constitution and have already reinterpreted it. Where will we be after the next four years? Perhaps a state of anarchy, if we are still here at all.

  • me January 1, 2021, 11:56 am

So when the DC police don’t protect senators and members of the House outside of the building what are they supposed to do while walking to their cars or hotels.

  • Stephen January 1, 2021, 11:37 am

Living in rural East Texas we need to carry a firearm around the area. We have been charged by wild pigs, stalked by cougars, and don’t ask about all of the poisonous snakes; and the alligators in the rivers and ponds…..

  • wrausch January 1, 2021, 10:53 am

Screw Kalifornicated. Communist freaks afraid of patriotic Americans. Who is causing the majority of murder and violence in this nation? The leftist Marxist Democrats, by way of BLM and antifa. They’re solution to our safety concerns: disarm us and defund the police. GTH!

    • michael January 4, 2021, 4:50 am

They never had any real intentions of defunding police. They need them to enforce their BS Laws. It’s used to sow division & discord. The police know this. What do you think these LEOs would do if they wanted to start concentration camps or follow unconstitutional orders ? You want to see the type of whackos in our Govt. & LEO ? Notice during the riots what the infamous LEOs did ? Followed orders from who ? People better wake up !

    typical liberal ideology.

members of Congress have been allowed for decades to carry weapons with the exception of the House Floor. in todays environments Republican politicians need the ability defend themselves. in typical fashion democrats want to take away that ability. its never been a problem until a member uses their US Constitutional right. then they must ban you.

I sit on my Town Council. I also openly carry a well holstered 1911 in .45 cal at all times. And, Yes, I even wear it during Council meetings. Well over 60% of the population, in my State, own firearms and the average number of guns owned by them is twenty seven. We believe in the Second because all Amendments matter.

    • Kane January 1, 2021, 6:06 pm

I really love the 1911 but mostly as a “range gun” and am more comfortable with my Sig P320 compact 9mm or my Ruger LCR .357. The 1911 carried with condition 0-4 is fine for others but I do NOT get the repeated range visits I would need to get comfortable with the 1911 at this point.

Have you seen NY house bill A416 ? Quite disturbing for public officials. They should be in a nut house. Please run for a higher office if possible ? We need sound minded individuals in the highest offices in our Govts.

“California Reps”———Enough said. Just go to LA or San Francisco walk around thru the garbage and homeless with their tents on the streets. Be careful of the “human waste” and needles all over the streets and sidewalks. See what a “third world city” looks like. Disneyland?? Ya if you want to fight your way thru the panhandlers and have your kids scared half to death. No wonder business and people are fleeing the state.

  • Dave January 1, 2021, 10:24 am

It’s left wing politics, I wouldn’t expect anything LESS!!

  • John Z January 1, 2021, 10:12 am

Why is the “Truly Unhinged” given the last word in this article?

  • Olen P Biehl January 1, 2021, 9:58 am

It is absolutely amazing the ignorance of California legislators. Once someone becomes intent on enteringbthe capitol shooting any LEOs on the way in. There will be no defense other than those few who choose to be armed at work.
Thus be the case, I think the CA reps should work from home.

  • Andrew Ling January 1, 2021, 9:45 am

People like Mr. Huffman exist everywhere in the USA. He may feel secure knowing that he has made it. He is protected by the government by virtue of being a congressman. There are lesser people to protect him. Well, commoners like us have to fend for ourselves from people like him. The laws do not always work in favor of the law abiding. The equalizer is the right to bear and carry arms to protect what is our right to coexist in our free country. Respect all free and law abiding people of this nation. Don’t force any draconian rule of unjust privilege upon us. Try to be a bit more humble, Mr. Huffman. My guns are the only tools I have to answer to evils that will not let us live as a free people.

  • Steven January 1, 2021, 9:23 am

I am in favor of congressmen shooting one another, as long as the left ones are getting shot.

So, if there are never any guns around, there will never be any accidents. Great. Tell that to my dead mother. It’s a shame that because a few individuals don’t agree with those that choose to bear arms, which is their God Given Right and will go to any length to destroy it, why do we see this continuously, where we are always bending for the minority group, take a stand and carry that firearm proudly, there will be a day when they will be thanking you for carrying it, the day you use it to save your life and theirs, karma always comes back around in the end!👊👊🇺🇸

In Agreement with above posts, Sam and Super G. Thank you.

My .02 worth, as all I have to offer is common sense:

Rep. Huffman is seriously out of touch with the real world. He has security whenever he needs and wants it. It’s all about control .That is what the democrats want.2A, forget it. Bill of rights, nope.

Apparently , in this case, he doesn’t trust his fellow congressmen. That’s pretty serious, when you can’t trust the guy next to you.

Protect ourselves, no. Call the police, as good as they are, hope they show up in time, but realistically, they just won’t, or can’t. Just ask people who live in Chicago, during this past summer of protests.

I just can’t wrap my head around this…Can someone help me? Am I missing something? Is there something in the water in California?

    I dunno…………..

  • KC December 31, 2020, 1:54 pm

Passing common sense laws? You’re a California politician, you have no common sense.

  • SuperG December 31, 2020, 11:36 am

Here’s the full quote from Congressman Mike Bishop, as reported from Michelle Mark from Business Insider on 6/14/17: “The only reason why any of us walked out of this thing, by the grace of God, one of the folks here had a weapon to fire back and give us a moment to find cover. We were inside the backstop and if we didn’t have that cover by a brave person who stood up and took a shot themselves, we would not have gotten out of there and every one of us would have been hit.” California sheeple are so used to being “victims-in-waiting, that they want all of us to be one too.

  • Sam Hancock December 31, 2020, 8:37 am

There is some much wrong with this I don’t know where to start.

“Threats of political violence are on the rise,,,,” So let’s disarm ourselves so we can be safer. How does that work? Lets make other people responsible for our safety.

I thought these representatives were supposed to be the best of us, but if they can’t be trusted to use a firearm safely how can they cope with the much more challenging problems facing the country.

This is meant to be another slap in the face for conservative legislators who are much more likely to show personal responsibility and provide for their own safety.

There are many other problems than I can get into here, but my last point, the Second Amendment applies to everyone not just legislators.

    • CharlieKing1 January 1, 2021, 10:12 am

“I thought these representatives were supposed to be the best of us,” – quote from Sam Hancock above

With all due respect Mr. Hancock, these Congress critters are not that intelligent, and certainly shouldn’t be making laws that we have to follow. As proof, I give you Congresscritter Hank Johnson who believed the island of Guam would tip over if too many military personnel were standing on one side of the island. Oh, and there are so many, many more examples.
