California City Tells Revolutionary War Reenactors: No Guns Allowed, Use Sticks Instead

No guns allowed in the park. That included muskets, says Elk Grove city officials. (Photo: CBSSacramento)

City officials in Elk Grove, California put their foot down when a nonprofit wanted to reenact the Battles of Lexington and Concord at a local park.

The problem was that the nonprofit, the Elk Grove Historical Society, wanted to bring muskets to the event.  You know, the appropriate arms of the era.  The very tools used to win our independence from Great Britan.

Officials pointed to a park ordinance that makes it illegal to “Use, maintain, possess, fire, or discharge any firearm”

Now, one would think that common sense would prevail in this case. City leaders would say, we can make an exception here because those muskets won’t be loaded with anything but black powder. Plus, the reenactment isn’t just a bunch of guys playing dress up, it also serves as an educational opportunity for children. A way to teach them about our nation’s history. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

Nope. No common sense. This is, after all, California.

Officials did offer up another suggestion, though. Use sticks instead of muskets.

“They actually asked us if we can use wooden sticks, and can you see 12 men in full regalia and another 12 charging with wooden sticks saying ‘Bang bang!’ It just doesn’t have the same effect,” said Jim Entrican, one of the reenactors.

Entrician said that a conversation is ongoing with the city to see if they can reach an agreement for next year.  However, this year’s event, originally scheduled for April, is canceled.

Chalk it up as a win for Commiefornia.

Glad I am 3000 miles away from CA. But, do they consider a black powder firearm a firearm in CA? I thought it was not considered a firearm, and that is one of the reasons you can buy one and the USPS will deliver it to you.

  • JC February 23, 2018, 9:02 pm

To the patriots of Elk Grove California. Round up these treasonous maggots and string them up in the middle of town and then continue with your reenactment. What many Americans don’t realize is that these politicians, officials and all the other clowns involved in government both state and federal are the EMPLOYEES of the electorate. WE THE PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER not these overpaid parasites who get a little power and it goes to their head. They take away our rights one small cut at a time and one day you’ll wake up in Russia or china with zero rights. We are way past due for revolution and it won’t fair well for liberals and politicians. MAGA!!!

    • Not A Contard February 23, 2018, 10:52 pm

Why is it only contards that think it’s ok to break all the rules?

      • bobh February 26, 2018, 6:23 pm

When a city grants a permit for a march and closes streets on the march route are they “breaking all the rules” that restrict those streets to vehicular traffic? What about all the fireworks set off at outdoor entertainment venues in violation of city and state laws? Oh, that’s right- all of those laws and rules have provisions allowing certain exceptions.
Trolls like Not A Contard need reminded of the old adage, “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and remove all doubt.”

Those would more properly be TURDSICLES

    • Michael G February 26, 2018, 3:05 am

Why not whips and paddles with high rise black leather pants with the Asses cut out. ! Come on that would be sooo awesome Dontja just love it !

      • Andrew N. September 18, 2018, 12:17 am

Michael G- Out here in The People’s Republik of California, what you describe is considered “normal” and goes on everyday in San Francisco. If you complain about children seeing this kind of thing, you are ostracized for it, being labeled a “homophobe” or nowadays a “RACIST!!!”. (Yes, I know it has nothing to do with race, but the people yelling RACIST!!! don’t care. Or think. Ever.) I was once walking in the Tenderloin District and a Sex Shop had a window display that made me blush, and I’m a 14 year Navy Vet and I was ALONE! I could not (and still can’t) believe that this is allowed in publicv where small children could see it. But no pictures of guns allowed in S.F., that could warp our kids minds. Sad what the world has become out here.

…proving we have a growing generation of oversensitive idiots. Are we going to ban cars next, given they are constantly used by individuals to mow down pedestrians?

  • ChrisB February 23, 2018, 5:23 pm

Since the regulation cited mentions ‘firearms’, does it actually apply to archaic ignition weapons, IE, antiques?

    • Lance February 25, 2018, 1:01 pm

I agree, according to the ATF, a musket is not a firearm.

  • K Niemisto February 23, 2018, 4:46 pm

Commonsense is no longer common for sure. This proves it! Heck, if California is going to get on the gun ban trip, why not ban trucks that can ram through crowds, kitchen ingredients that can become explosive in the wrong hands, pressure cookers, airplanes and like. All have been used by deranged people to kill innocent people at one time or another. How about use some uncommon sense? Why not invest in products like that made by Canadian company Patriot One Technologies, which makes an electronic unit that can detect weapons upon entry into buildings, alerting security before the mayhem starts. Or, maybe spend some money on mental health access for people who cannot afford it. And maybe even have law abiding teachers, security staff or volunteers who have taken advanced gun training to protect our kids in schools and elsewhere. You simply cannot ensure their safety by passing gun laws that will only paralyze the good and empower those who will not follow them.

Commiefornia makes me ill. Forty years ago it was a great place to live, but now it’s a totalitarian disaster.
I was finally able to escape from there eight years ago through retirement, and I always feel sorry for those conservatives who must continue to live under the socialist boot of wackos like Moonbeam Brown, Gavin Newsom, Cameltoe Harris, and the rest of the inmates who are now running the asylum.

  • Randy Locher February 23, 2018, 4:25 pm

    Californians deserve everything they get!!

    • jc February 24, 2018, 10:08 am

Hey Randy Take it easy. There are a lot of good conservative gun owners in Calif. and we are the most pissed off and frustrated people on the planet. We are badly out numbered by the morons. If you don’t think it can happen in your state your wrong.Politicians will cave to the screaming masses despite your best efforts.Stay vigilant.

  • Jeffrey Polaski February 23, 2018, 3:25 pm

I usually don’t jump into these discussions; don’t like gun talk, but that’s just me.
This is a hoot. Also a good advertisement for Williamsburg, VA Historic Recreation of a Revolutionary city. For a bit of cash or credit card, you can learn about muskets (don’t know if they include Brown Besses), load ’em up and shoot them.
    Usa URL: https://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/plan/calendar/to-fire-a-flintlock-musket
My wife tried to entice me to travel there with her, but I’ve already hefted one of those long guns and I’ll tell you, my tricorn hat is off to the fellows who carried them around all day, mile after mile. Heavy doesn’t describe it, and my old shoulders, well…, let’s say they they did well with an M-14 when I was young.

  • Beachhawk February 23, 2018, 3:02 pm

Yes, Elk Grove city councilmen, tell those reenactors to carry sticks and while you are at it, tell your police force to start carrying water pistols instead of their Glocks. See how that works out for you and your constituents.

  • Beachhawk February 23, 2018, 2:58 pm

Yes, reenactors, carry sticks into your mock battles and don’t forget to yell, “Bang, bang” when you shoot at a Brit!

  • Qhorse13 February 23, 2018, 2:11 pm

This is getting ridiculous. The politicians are TRYING to bury their heads in the sand. Make guns the bad guy. This country has been fighting since its inception. WITH GUNS! we became a nation WITH GUNS. we defend this nation WITH GUNS. we defend ourselves WITH GUNS. this country is being manipulated by the ones that fear guns. And because they fear guns they want to ban them and THINK that it will stop ALL the bad that’s going around. Criminals WILL have a field day if it comes to the point that guns are banned. Guns are American culture. And I will NOT give up my guns. I carry every day and everywhere because I know there is some wack job out there that wants to make someone his target for crime. And I will NOT become one. Law enforcement is NOT the only good guy with a gun. They seemed to be the only one recognized for being a good guy with a gun. But they aren’t. I know LOTS of people that would, will, and have intervened in crimes being committed. I am one of them. The media is getting everyone all cranked up and scared. And people are just too stupid to see thats what’s going on. They can not wait for the next shooting so they can broadcast it and they hope to eventually get the liberal playbook in action on taking everyone’s firearms away. I feel for the families that had someone fall victim to a crazy person that used a gun to do his dirty work. But all this lashing out at the NRA, and armed citizen is wrong. NONE of them committed the Unforgivable crime of mass shooting. The victims family and friends want someone to lash out at, amd I understand that. But you are lashing out at the WRONG people. You need o focus on the one who DID IT. go to HIS trial, voice your opinion and concern. Tell the stories you want told. But don’t lash out at the innocent. HOW is the NRA the bad guy? If it wasn’t for the organizations like the NRA and seveel others the liberals would have already removed our second amendment. Which would do nothing but make the citizens of this nation victims of every real bad guy out there. Along with the political figures that feel they want to rule this nation with an iron fist. You think this nation could never become a dictatorship? Think again. Because they would have no fear of trying it if our second amendment was removed. Right now they know they couldn’t try it. And we got closer to the edge of that when Obama was is office than this nation has ever been before. Had the second amendment not been in place when he was in office this nation would have been drastically different I think. Because he had no recourse but someone bitching about his actions. What kept it from going further than it did was the possible blowback from the citizens because of our second amendment. That is why it was written in the first place. To keep tyranny out of our Oval Office. He was the closest thing we ever had to a tyrant and hopefully never will again. Like it or not. THIS IS THE TRUTH!!

  • Patrick McWilliams February 23, 2018, 1:12 pm

Interesting, in that the battles of Lexington and Concord were the result of a move by the British Army to seize colonial arms and powder. California politicians got that part of the reenactment right.

  • USMCM14 February 23, 2018, 12:55 pm

“News Flash” for the comrades’ in the ” Socialist Republic of Kommiefornia ” muzzle loaders are not considered to be a firearm or controlled by the ATF as a firearm !!!

    • Beachhawk February 23, 2018, 3:28 pm

      USMCM14:
Facts do not matter to liberals, they only care how they “feel” about some subject of policy. Facts get in the way of their agenda. The liberal agenda is all about control. For instance, they feel good about controlling guns because in their minds they are solving “the crime problem,” when in fact the cities with the most restrictive gun laws have the very worst crime rates. Do you think the governor of California and the mayor of Los Angeles really care that South-Central L.A. is a war zone? They will only start to care if the Black and Hispanic gangs move their gang wars to Beverly Hills or Brentwood.

Actually, liberal politicians feel strongest when exerting control over their constituents. Liberal politicians are certain they know what’s best for you even if don’t like it. After all, when it comes to gun control, it’s not about the guns, it’s all about the control. They learned a long time ago that most legal gun owners are law abiding citizens, but they also learned that unarmed citizens are submissive citizens.

  • Dave Brown February 23, 2018, 12:45 pm

Now CA is the state of nuts and fruits, but heck over 50 % of them think alike so what can I say. Me I really do fall for this left and right thing as that is mainly a party telling me how to think. The Sticks is a little over the top. But, look around and you will find a bunch on the left and right that will not let their kids play with guns. My generation play with guns, bow&arrows, and yes my Indian friends played the some games. I taught my kids to shoot and hunt, yet today my Girl age 36 is not crazy about firearms. She is free to do that. But, I am free and already have 3 firearms per Granddaughters who are now only 4 and 6, so I have to wait a few more years to get them into firearms, but it will be up to them to decide. They might turn against firearms, I hope not, but only The Shadow Knows. How about we all take a good long look at the one person we can control and change, yes you guessed correct, that one person is You. As for The Sticks, let them be them, laugh at them when you get the chance, and if you daily carry like me, be a little careful when you are in their great state of CA.

  • Daniel February 23, 2018, 12:28 pm

Money says if they were celebrating the Bolshevik revolution the “Government” of Elk Grove would not only allow it, but would furnish the reinnactors with Ak-47’s. Los Angeles is no longer an American City, its an extension of Tijuana. The entire State is moving that way and it wont be long now…………we are moving out !!!! But dont laugh folks, what happens here ALWAYS spreads to the other states sooner or later. Kalifornia is the testing ground for it, it is the political release mechanism for the Nation.

    • mikeb April 5, 2019, 7:47 am

The reason it spreads from Calif is because after the loons elect the people that screw things up, they move and take their loony ideals with them. Every lib leaving Calif should have their brain reset first.

  • bjg February 23, 2018, 12:28 pm

California gets more and more stupid everyday. People in California must love liberals they keep voting them in. You have your peoples dream land live in it. Should name it democratland..

  • realist February 23, 2018, 12:14 pm

Teaching kids about revolution and independence is contrary to the left’s agenda.

    • e February 23, 2018, 2:59 pm

WHAT???? your just not a Patriot like the politicians stopping these hardened thugs from showing kids that smoke. Someone could be scared by a loud noise. Kids shouldn’t know they can fight back if oppressed to much. HEIL California!

  • Briley February 23, 2018, 12:01 pm

Arhhhhhug, simply another killing field. The moronic politicians where I live decided to do the same idiotic postings at our city and “wilderness” parks. In their simple minds the signs meant EVERYBODY would obey and no guns would be in the parks. Simpletons! Hey, that is a pretty good definition for most city councel members and for more than a few state legislators. Anyway, I pointed out in a letters to the editor of our local newspaper, the respective park boards and my state representative that these signs really say “Welcome Gangsters” you are free to rob, rape and kill at will, and then reminded them of the state preemption laws regarding firearms. Washington was once a great and free state until the liberal/progressives took over the population center of Seattle and its surrounding areas and foisted their insane progressive ideals on the rest of the state – they are now trying to kill preemption. Land wise, like in CA, we are mostly conservative but can’t do much but build sand dams against an ever higher tide of liberal stupidity and the naivety of the new citizens. Back to the signs, they came down and new signs went up saying “No Discharging of Firearms in the Park.” At least the parks are no longer killing fields and safe zones for the scum of the earth.

  • allen February 23, 2018, 11:47 am

Could you just imagine seeing Crazy Nancy swearing to impeach George Washington over illegal use of a fire arm.

  • RW February 23, 2018, 11:46 am

  • Jim Watters February 23, 2018, 11:42 am

Let’s tell Commiefornia hypocrites to STOP making movies with guns and killings in them.

  • Jason February 23, 2018, 11:39 am

If California is going to be that way, they need to take all of the guns away from Hollywood and the actors must use sticks as well.

  • Michael Keim February 23, 2018, 11:27 am

Ah yes. The dreaded assault musket shows up in sunny California! Just goes to show the stupidity of liberal politicians and the people who vote them in. Stalin and Hitler, among others, had the type of gun control they have wet dreams about. We all know how well that worked out for millions of innocents. Make no mistake about it, these people want ALL firearms banned.

  • markle laws February 23, 2018, 11:21 am

Hollywood should use wood sticks in it’s movies because their guns which shoot blanks can be modified to shoot modern center fire ammo. A black powder musket can’t.However intellect is not california’s strong suite. Money is it’s god.Don’t buy anything from california until hollywood starts using sticks for guns. After all when they lose their god they will change religions/

  • Chief Two Star February 23, 2018, 10:53 am

I am a native Californian and still reside here due to family obligations. Victor Davis Hanson has it right – “California is no longer really a single state. Few in the Bay Area have ever been to the southern Sierra Nevada foothill communities, or the west side of the Central Valley, or the upper quarter of the state. Coastal California is simply far more left-wing than other blue states; interior California is far more right-wing than most red states; increasingly, the former dictate to and rule the latter” (“Understanding the California Mind”). Elk Grove is a bedroom community of Sacramento; it is where the leftist lunacy goes home at the end of the day. Massive illegal immigration and progressive public education tipped California to the far-left. Realize that many, but not enough, Californians like me are just like you. We no longer have a voice in state and, in many cases, local government. Take heed, the enemy is here and is real.

  • mauser6863 February 23, 2018, 10:40 am

Makes perfect sense to me; Why would California want to have revolutionary war reenactors at any event. Afterall what is the point of celebrating the revolution and independence of a country you are no longer part of???

  • Corey Brand February 23, 2018, 10:28 am

I didn’t think black powder weapons are even classified as firearms under federal jurisdiction. California must be “special”.

  • Lee February 23, 2018, 10:12 am

Personally I’d like to see the group that does the re-inacting get together, raise money, and go to court against the city of Elk Grove.

  • chris February 23, 2018, 9:51 am

Don’t feel sorry for you guys at all, you chose to live there and allow the Liberals to control you. Unfortunately, too many of your Liberals have come to Colorado and infest our state as well. So now we have a mini-Feinstein State here as well.

    • Robert Terry February 23, 2018, 10:39 am

So now, no one should feel sorry for you either.
They are YOUR liberals now. You choose to live there
      and let them control you.
      STUPID!

  • Dan F. February 23, 2018, 9:47 am

Oh thank you, Solons of Elk Grove, for saving us from these gangster Revolutionary War reenactors. Who doesn’t recall that on 4 July, 1776 the Continental Congress declared declared America’s freedom from Great Britain? And who forgets the first battle after that declaration? The Brits having artillery and musketry facing the Americans armed with sticks. The Brits nearly lost that one after falling over, laughing. The Americans charged and yelled rude epithets while inflicting some nasty bruises. The Brits got irritated, seized their guns, and massacred the Americans. So much for independence.

    • JC February 23, 2018, 9:59 pm

  • john February 23, 2018, 9:30 am

As a borne and bread Californian I am always amazed at the stupidity of the politicians and voters in this state. The magazine ban,10 day waiting period and now the ammunition fiasco(which the voters actually VOTED for) do NOTHING to stop crazy people from doing crazy things. Not using muskets in a reenactment?Absolute insanity! There are a lot of good conservative gun owners in this state but we are badly outnumbered. We are looking to move to Nevada ASAP.

    • Altoids February 23, 2018, 10:45 am

You would be well served by moving to Nevada or Arizona. Arizona doesn’t even require a permit to carry concealed, although they are still available.

      • jc February 24, 2018, 10:17 am

Personally I feel if California was not in the U.S. any longer, we would have an excess of federal funds for the remainder of the 49 states – We throw away tons of federal cash supporting the nut cases out there, Jerry Brown is just the tip of the iceberg – The movie industry is turning out such awful movies that we certainly wouldn’t miss that either, then the overpaid actors would have less input into political issues that they know nothing about – I am personally ashamed of the whole of California with its erratic function, dirt crime, drugs, illegal occupants – And the list goes on !

    • Al February 23, 2018, 9:29 am

Much as I dislike Cali’s Lefties, you couldn’t be more wrong.
That State brings in tons of revenue, approx. 1/4 of the U.S. economy.
We couldn’t afford that kind of hit.
Not to mention the ocean terminals there for goods coming in and going OUT.

      • Charles M Lamb February 23, 2018, 11:08 am

Money is not everything, especially when it is compared against freedom an liberty. BTW CA doesn’t contribute 1/4 of the nation’s economy. But, even if it contributed 1/2, it is not worth the moral degradation to the rest of the country having it as a state.

It’s not called the land of fruits and nuts for nothing.

      • Bob February 23, 2018, 3:01 pm

Ocean terminals being a valued commodity? They’re only temporary until the big one. The rest of we will still have ocean terminals. They will be in Bozeman, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.

  • Earl Manley February 23, 2018, 8:54 am

Did note two Civil war reenactors in the video as part of the fife and drum band. One Union and one Confederate. Would you hazard a guess that when 4th of July comes around there are fire works in the park?

  • Steve February 23, 2018, 7:16 am

Yes, we must watch out for those “tactical” or “assault” muskets!

  • Richard Hilton February 23, 2018, 7:14 am

It would not break my heart if we gave California back to Mexico that’s really where it belongs anyway. Since it’s easier to do that than to have an earthquake drop it in the Ocean either way we would be rid of it.

  • Mike February 23, 2018, 7:10 am

“Use sticks instead”. So just like in Harry Potter…use magical wands made of elder wood? Instead of them yelling “pew pew, pow pow” they shout “stupify! Experiamos!!”

  • Resolute February 23, 2018, 7:06 am

The city fathers of Elk Grove can take those sticks and shove them where the sun won’t shine; tar and feather then ride’em out of town on a rail. They are the lowest of the cellulose vessels of bovine fecal matter.

  • Mike February 23, 2018, 7:03 am

I heard the Libtards now want to ban bump stocks and high capacity magazines for muskets too.

Just shows, poorly educated idiots are everywhere. We need gun safety and use taught in our schools, not more gun laws. If everybody carried a gun there would be fewer victims. Knowledge is power, we need a better educational system. A system that produces useful human beings, not useless idiot, morons. The rich like poorly educated idiots, especially their money. Our guns are what protect us from our corrupt Government. That is why we have a Constitution. Our forefathers were very smart. Wake up people, vote. Let’s get back our Democracy back.

    • Wolf February 23, 2018, 12:19 pm

      Republic…

Democracy is ‘tyranny of the masses’, a Republic is (supposed to be!) protection of the minority from the dictates of the majority.

That’s why I laugh every time I see the California flag, or see something ‘official’ from the state – “California Republic”… California hasn’t been a Republic since the days of the ‘Summer of Love’, and probably even before that!

  • BigC February 23, 2018, 6:16 am

This is just another example of the level of idiocy to which the progressive left has risen! F’em ALL!!!!!!

  • Mike E February 23, 2018, 5:50 am

Them be “assault muskets”, and yes really they were the state of the art assault weapon of their day. MEE 1st Continental Arty.

  • joe February 23, 2018, 4:13 am

This is the reality of leftist elite rule. The rich have their gun bearers and the rest get sticks.

BREAKING NEWS: Mental health professionals do their jobs as the justice system actually enforces laws already in place for public safety!!!
    CRAZY I KNOW.

  • Dennis February 23, 2018, 3:32 am

my goodness i hate California libtards… they are the worst kind.

  • non February 23, 2018, 3:24 am

You realize this is not a civil war reenactment..It is a revolutionary war reenactment..

    • non February 23, 2018, 3:26 am

I just think it is hilarious that they labeled the video wrong..

  • BUURGA February 23, 2018, 2:52 am

This has as much to do with Lib politics, as it does firearms. These nitwits will get away with this as long as people let them.

  • MikeB February 23, 2018, 2:47 am

It continues to boggle my mind that people with real common sense choose to live in states like that. High tax rates to help care for all the illegals who aren’t paying taxes and stupid gun laws.

NEWS FLASH! BULLETIN! Gang gunfire erupts in park after drug deal goes bad.

  • Blue Dog February 20, 2018, 1:50 pm

I was going to ask if a ban on firearm discharge would affect muzzleloading rifles but upon further consideration I find it likely that such arms are regulated in the state of California as firearms. One could make a case that muzzleloaders don’t qualify under such a ban in a jurisdiction under which muzzleloaders are not considered firearms.
