Ultimately the only good reason to go with .22 for self-defense is that it is your last, best, and only option. The truth is that it’s rarely the only option.

The Smith and Wesson 22A has not been out of production for all that long. Actually it was right about a year ago the Smith officially discontinued this gun. It is possible there might still be a few floating around local gun shops that are new, but the vast majority of them will be used. And if you want an easy-to-service tack-driver, this is it.

Now that .22 LR isn’t so hard to find, the time is right to look at practicing your skills with less expensive ammo. And Kimber’s conversion kit rocks. If you have a compact 1911, this may be the ideal way to train with your carry gun.
