A Chicago homeowner fatally shot one of two would-be thieves last week during a shootout on the city’s North Side, reports local media.
Police say the homeowner, a licensed concealed carrier, confronted the two armed suspects around 11:12 p.m. while they were under a car attempting to steal a catalytic converter.
Upon getting out from underneath the car, the two perps opened fire on the permit holder.
The permit holder, 44, who is remaining anonymous, drew his own sidearm and returned fire, hitting 25-year-old Darion Blackman in the neck.
Blackman would not survive the wound.

The other suspect fled the scene. Thankfully, the homeowner was not injured during the encounter.
Police say that Blackman had prior run-ins with the law. Back in September, Blackman was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon and not having a valid FOID card.
He was released from jail the day after his initial arrest and was put on parole.
The investigation is still underway and police are actively looking for Blackman’s accomplice.

That’s been my argument for years now. You can find repeat offenders that got “life in prison”, I have yet to see one repeating offenses after being put to death. It also saves more oxygen for the law abiding…
The FOID Card and a CCW Permit are two separate things in Chicago (IL). My son lived there for a few years. A person needs the FOID Card to purchase ammo or a gun. He also obtained a CCW Permit much like any other free state. He did however manage to finally get the hell out of that sewer and move to another (free) state.
I don’t know how anybody gets a concealed carry permit in Chicago, and he may be the only one who got one. I am glad he put it to good use.
His death should go against the government because he should not have been out on the streets. He was apparently a career criminal who was released from jail a day after his last arrest.
Often, it is left to homeowners, not the police, to take out the garbage. The criminal justice system is in ruins.

More proof that gun laws do nothing to reduce crime. The criminal was armed illegally while the homeowner had to jump through all the government hoops to be able to be armed to protect himself.

Yes, ammo is quite expensive and lately hard to come by. Should the shooter be reinbursed for the ammo and inconvience by the deseased’s friends and family ? Should the governor present an award, letter of commedation and small monetary reward for saving the tax payers many thousand of dollars only for the thief to repeat offend ? Rehab ……….I think not.
At this point, he doesn’t have to worry about his feelings. Problem solved; a good thing.

The FOID Card was created in 1968, by the State of Illinois’ Firearms Owner’s Identification Act as part of a public safety initiative to identify those persons eligible to possess and acquire firearms and firearms ammunition. The FOID Card is NOT a conceal and carry card.

I thought the state courts in IL ruled that a Constitutional right should NOT require a card or permit and therefore the FOID has no legal standing.

Florida was the first state to open concealed carry to any law abiding citizen. You had to attend a class, at that time run by the various police offices. I knew the first woman to get a CC permit. She asked a question in the class about being accosted in a dark parking trying to get into her car, and having to shoot someone just how many times should she shoot, probably a pretty good question when you think about it. This was in the day when the revolver was still king, and the police officer told her, “Keep pulling the trigger until you hear clicking”, we will sort it out when we get there.
Additionally, if you had a hunting license it would suffice in lieu of the training class.
Bad advice from that cop. You keep firing until the threat is neutralized, not until you run out of ammo.

But let’s imagine that Blackman had survived. What then should have happened to him? Well, if we adopted some of the laws in Asia, Blackman would get 20 years to life in prison for bringing a gun to a crime and discharging it. Had he hit the homeowner, he’d get life. And if he had killed the homeowner, he’d automatically get the death penalty.

In FL, they adopted the 10-20-Life law. Commit a crime while using a gun- get 10 years. Discharge the gun in the commission of a crime- get 20 years. Injure or kill someone with a gun while committing a crime- get life.
