New Six-Guns from Cimarron–SHOT Show 2015

Cimarron is one of the leaders in the reproduction of 19th century firearms. Even if they don’t manufacture the guns themselves, they refine them. I stopped by their booth at SHOT Show to see what new revolvers they had.  Of course new is a relative term.  Both of the new revolvers they showcased are based on the Colt 1873. So new old revolvers.

The first one the gentleman, I say gentleman because he was dressed in late 19th century attire, pulled out of the case was a beauty. Take a look at the photos to see what I mean.  This was a very nicely done, laser engraved Peace Maker. The bluing was dark and rich and the French grey style finish helped the engraving pop. The MSRP was right at $500. So new technology and old technology, and reasonably priced, too.

The other revolver I got a chance to look at was a prototype.  I hope they make this one so I can buy one. It has a few things that set it apart from other Peace Maker style revolvers.  First it has an octagonal barrel that just looks cool.  It also has a short stroke hammer for faster cocking, a popular custom style upgrade a lot of SASS shooters do to their competition guns.  The other big difference is the grip.  This, as-yet-unnamed revolver has the grip frame of a Colt Walker.  This is a grip for shooters with big hands.  See the photo below for a comparison.

The engraved revolver in bad lighting.

The engraving lacks the dept of hand engraving, but it still looks good.

The contrast between the french grey and blued steel is slick.

Detail. The lasers do a fine job.

The fit of the grips.

Business end.

Octagon Barrel. Some nice color case hardening on this one too.

Frontier Octagon.

Short stroke is a good thing in this context.

Hey, I love the fact that you can buy a custom 1873 at a remarkable price. I started shooting SASS 2 years ago and I cannot remember when I have had this much fun. I hope someone did not linch the poor bastard that called the 45 Colt caliber a 45 LONG Colt. I am sure we have more important things to talk about that this. Like, who is going to put a boot in Obamas ass.

  • Jim January 28, 2015, 1:04 am

Wish people would quit saying 45 Long Colt. No such animal.

    • Duray January 28, 2015, 8:45 am

Yup. We tell shooters “always be certain to use the right ammo for your gun” and then we expect them to go find ammo marked 45 Long Colt when there’s no such thing on the market. But don’t you dare say “45 Colt” or they’ll think you’re talking about a 1911. Then after a moment of confusion: “Oh, you mean the LONG Colt!”

      • Chris January 28, 2015, 3:52 pm

Yep… thats why it’s .45 ACP and not .45 Colt

      • Mark Pickett January 1, 2018, 4:19 pm

Go to Bass Pro, about 6 different name brands and they all say long colt…

    A. Uberti (subsidiary of Benelli) makes the frames, barrels, cyclinders

At last… something good. Too many dumb ideas coming out of that show, then Cimarron rides to the rescue!
Laser “engraved” pistols for $500 should sell well. Very nice!

    Beautiful looking pistol!

    Nice… I like!

The “Walker” grip looks more like an 1860 Army grip. The 51 Navy and the 73 Peacemaker are very close dimensionally but the 60 Army is longer. IIRC Elmer Keith at one time swapped grip frames from a 60 Army onto a Peacemaker frame for a longer grip.

    • Eric January 27, 2015, 3:19 pm

I have taken the grip frames from an 1860 replica and an 1873 replica and swapped them. I prefer the longer dragoon style frame of the 1860, and like the idea for a production revolver.
What I can’t stand on these revolvers is stamping them 45 “LC”. It’s 45 Colt!

Hello I would like to have a price list of the cowboy pistols or maybe an email of the pistols and prices , thanks gradymc

The larger grip isn’t a new idea — I have a Uberti that was made in the ’80’s, imported by Western Arms, with the grip frame from the 1851 Navy Colt on it. It’s just a little shorter than the Walker grip frame. It came as a convertible .44 Mag/.44-40, and the top strap of the frame is about .100″ thicker than a standard Colt frame to handle the pressures of the .44 Mag, but the only way you can tell is to have them side by side.

I have an american arms cowboy pistal …its says .44mag on the barrol but it had a .44/40 cyl. i got to checkin on it an found out it will take 4 differunt kinds of ammo.the frame will handle a casul if you change the barrul an cyl. also a .44 mag an 44/40 an 44 special

“race” guns are ruining SASS. IPSC anyone?

    • Yankee Dude January 27, 2015, 8:24 am

I agree 100%. SASS should have a pro category And a original category .

      • Blasted Cap January 27, 2015, 11:43 am

They already do. Those that practice and those that don’t. I practice a lot with stock guns and beat the pants off those that have all the bells and whistles that don’t feel the need.

      • MeeesterPaul January 17, 2017, 3:29 am

I’d favor a SASS category called “Cowperson” for shooters loading their ammo at a third of original power spec.
