Small-Frame, Big Bang! Dark Storm Industries .308 AR — SHOT Show 2022

Levi Sim SHOT Show 2022

AR-10s are for big cartridges, like .308, and AR-15s are for small cartridges, like 5.56, right? Big cartridges need big heavy guns.

But Dark Storm Industries has turned this idea on its head with their small-frame .308 rifle. They’ve overcome some challenges, but the resulting .308-shooting gun weighs just 6.7lbs.

DSI has crammed .308 toughness into a small-frame AR.

Small frame, big bang

AR-10s are larger in almost all dimensions than AR-15s. But this DS-25 is just about the same size as an AR-15. It’s got a larger mag well because it takes AR-10 mags. And the Bolt Carrier Group is very different from an AR-15, and the bolt does not interchange with your other rifles.

A re-designed bolt and buffer make recoil from this gun feel similar to shooting 5.56 ammo.

Still, you’ll find that most of your other furniture from ARs will fit on this .308. What’s more, they say it’s not picky about what ammo you feed it and will cycle just about everything.

Early on, they had issues with extractors breaking, but over the last several years they have refined this gun so it works reliably.

What’s more, they have configurations on their website that are legal in all 50 states. There’s even a non-NFA option.

The mag well, which takes AR-10 mags, is markedly larger than an AR-15s. You probably won’t make any mistakes.

.308 in a light gun? Sounds miserable…

Why do you want to shoot .308 in a lightweight gun? Isn’t the recoil going to make it a miserable experience? Normally, it would. But as part of the refinement, they’ve managed to reduce the felt recoil so that it’s quite similar to a 5.56 rifle. That’s remarkable. Check out the video.

Dark Storm Industries’ DS-25 in .308 is available now for $1,495.

If you got the POF’s for $1400 you got lucky, really lucky ….. twice apparently

Isn’t this what Adams Arms did with their SF-308 aka Short Frame .308? Small, short, no difference in my book. Still .308 in am AR sized frame. So yea, in my book, Adams Arms already did this.

I love the guns America website! Through this particular website I found my Ruger mini 30. Woo hoo!!

This takes SR-25/M110-style magazines, correct? The article and descriptive stats is somewhat vague, citing ‘MagPul 20 round magazines’. Thank you.

I think the DS-25 is awesome and innovative, but to me it is just another P.O.F. Renegade. a .308 hybrid AR-15. The DS-25 if it is not interchangeable with other AR-15 upper receivers, then what is the point outside of smaller and lighter .308. For example can you use the DS-25 lower receiver with an AR-15 5.56nato Upper Receiver, if not whats the point if there is no interchangeability between calibers

What’s the point? About $1,000 left in your pocket compared with the POF.

I picked up a couple of used gas piston POF Revolutions (AR10 that are the size of an AR15) 2 years ago for $1400 each. So what’s that about a POF being $1000 more? Have owned numerous piston POFs over the years and wouldn’t own any other AR. Never heard of Dark Storm Industries…
