Overview

The Dead Foot Arms Modified Cycle System is a retrofit kit that transforms a standard AR-15 into a folding stock rifle. The system uses a proprietary dual recoil spring and shortened bolt carrier to reduce the overall rifle lenth. This makes the rifle short enough to accommodate a folding stock system that still fires with the stock folded.

The proprietary bolt carrier group works with standard direct-impingement AR-15 uppers and the shortened dual recoil spring system also helps reduce bolt bounce. Additionally the kit still provides a standard buffer tube to mount common AR stocks and pistol braces.

An AR with a standard 16-inch barrel measures just over 26 inches long with the stock is folded to the side — compared to over 30 inches with a standard collapsing stock. The folding stock adapter provides positive retention when folded and ensures a rock-solid lock up in the deployed position with a quick swing outward. The adapter works with any rifle that uses a standard AR-15 buffer assembly.

The Modified Cycle System is offered in both left- and right-side folding configurations.

Dead Foot Arms’ Modified Cycle System attaches only to the lower receiver and is rated for full-auto fire. Dead Foot Arms offers the kit with either a QPQ nitride finish or a Cerakote Micro Slick finish for enhanced reliability and reduced wear.

Each kit includes everything necessary and only requires a castle nut wrench to install. The kit includes the complete modified bolt carrier group, buffer springs, buffer tube and folding block assembly.

Its a small package even before it’s installed.

  • Buffer assembly weight: 11 ounces

Impressions

This kit is well thought-out and looks like what the AR should have been from the beginning. I could not get over how simple this kit was.

Dead Foot Arms offers complete kits as well as services to modify existing bolt carriers for a reduced price option. They carry complete kits for ARs chambered for .223 Remington/5.56 NATO as well as .300 AAC Blackout, 7.62x39mm and 9mm Luger.

The company produces both left- and right-side folding stock adapters as well. While the weight of the buffer assembly is heavier than standard the shortened bolt carrier group makes up for it and with the the Dead Foot Arms t-Rex 5 positions collapsible stock it is lightweight and very minimalist.

Pricing and Availability

The standard Modified Cycle System run $499 while the Cerakote version is a little more at $525. If you send in a bolt carrier of your own for modification the price drops by $100. Considering the amount of functionality this system adds — and unlike other folding stock adapters it can be fired with the stock folded — the price is reasonable for something this unique. Even better idea- add $100 & buy a folding stock AK-47!! Better system, better round, better mags.

I came back for a second look. Though this system has a folder advantage, it still has a few inches of buffer tube tail sticking out the back of the receiver that are “fixed”prior to the folding joint. Gas piston folders still are the shorter length system when folded (Sig 556, AK clones).

Understandably, some hate the price and if they are buying or building ARs for about the same price it won’t fit budget or value for there allpication. On the other hand, if you have big bucks in your High grade AR and this option is desired it makes sense.

How about a non folding option, for a pistol

If you really want a folding stock, here’s an idea…buy a Sig Sauer MCX. It’s completely modular, and the only changes I had to make was installing a muzzle brake and a new trigger. I have three AR’s, but the MCX is the easiest to clean. It’s very easy to remove the barrel when you need to do a thorough cleaning (just read the instructions carefully), and you can install a variety of stocks. The rifle can be fired with the stock folded. A great rifle!

Sure, if you have $1800 just laying around a SIG MCX is a great option. Or you can outfit a weapon you already have with this for $500. Yes $500 is a pretty good chunk of change but for what it does it seems reasonable. This would make an SBR super portable.

If you want just a folding stock, a Sig 556 provides it, if you can find one. I love my Sig 556 but it would be nice if it was modular like the AR platform.

You can buy another ar15 for that price they’re charging! Give me a break, how in the hell do they figure that’s worth $499?!!!
Sorry but I’ll pass, waste of money when it should actually cost less than half what they want, just ridiculous in my opinion.

    • Les February 13, 2017, 1:38 pm

Yup,,another do-dad /problem slover without a reason. Hell it cost me less to build the last AR complete, (479 total). Cold day in Hell before I’d buy one. All these manfacturers lately seem to think most people are stupid enough to buy a trinket that cost more than complete guns,,,,,seriously???? I’ll pass too.

Being able to fold a AR is a fine enhancement, being able to fire a folded GI system AR definitely takes it to the next level. Now if they can just filter the carbon. Lol. I hope they have solid Patents on this system.

Why change out internal components when you could just install a Law Tactical folding stock adapter? Their folding stock adapter requires no replacement of internal components and deploys in a second.

    • Kyle February 11, 2017, 3:49 pm

I’ve got both systems, had the law for a couple years and got the dead foot arms right folding system just a couple months ago. Always liked the law but the Dead Foot folder is far superior. The fact you can fire it folded is a really nice feature. Plus I’m right handed so the right folding stock is a lot better. The Dead Foot system has a nice tension lock when folded up too (kinda hard to describe) and the lockup is more stable than the law. It’s much pricier but overall a much better system. Easier to install too.
