Last year, we got a chance to look at the Delta S 9mm, in its original integrally suppressed glory. It was a hit, as seen from the review here. But it had many of us asking an obvious question- what if I don’t want to play the tax stamp game? And to be fair, many of us don’t. Be it because we aren’t fully settled yet and don’t want the NFA hassle of moving, or just don’t want to incur the added expense, it just isn’t for all of us. Well, good news. The Delta S 9mm “pistol” is now available in a no stamp configuration.
To really appreciate the firearm, it is worth noting how it came about to begin with. Delta S is a strategic partner of MCM firearms. MCM has a background of custom firearms, with a healthy dose of machining. When you put those two together, what do you get? A no-compromise set of principles when it comes to making guns.
And this reflects in the Delta S 9mm. It isn’t quite like anything else on the market. The uppers and lowers are billet, which contributes to the overall feel of quality in the hand. It is also where the strength comes from, allowing this firearm to have a much less bulky lower than competing models. You can tell at a glance that this gun was designed from the ground up for 9mm. Not a reduced scale AR-15 or an ancient design with some bells and whistles added.
The lower comes in two distinct models. Option one is the ubiquitous Glock magazine lower, which is a smart play in this day and age. Glock 9mm magazines have proven themselves in other PCC/ sub-gun roles for years, and a lot of us prefer that option. But if you don’t, option two is a bit more…. German. As in, it feeds off of H&K MP5 magazines, if that is how you roll.
The upper is available as either a side charger or an AR like rear charger. A mil-spec AR trigger will work and is an option, but a Hyperfire upgrade can also be had from the factory. The handguard is built in house, with an excellent mix of size and weight. Not to mention, the lightening cuts look cool. Currently, M-Lok is standard, but Key mod is also available.
Also new for the unsuppressed version is a flash hider. To keep the family looking the same, the flash hider is designed with the same diameter and stylings as the end cap of its suppressed brother. Small ports have been cut 360 degrees to make it actually do something, and it worked quite well during testing.
The real design brilliance, however, is not something you can see from the outside. While the Delta S is a straight blowback design, it doesn’t recoil like one. With a buffer and spring combination matched to the bolt with what can only be magic, recoil is minimal. Not pretty good for a 9mm light. Think pretty good for a semi-auto 22 light. Which means you can absolutely hammer targets with it.
During our range portion, I ran a bit of everything. The suppressed version ate both 147-grain Syntech and 115 grain American Eagle. With the bonus of enough can space to turn 115 grain at 1180 FPS hearing safe. The new unsuppressed version also ate both just fine, though I had to wear earplugs. Some days are harder than others.
So a unique gun for certain, but that isn’t all that is unique. The price tag on the Delta S 9mm is, predictably, on the high side. $1899.00 as a side charger, and with the upgraded trigger. Which is a lot of coin to drop….. all at once. Solution? Something I have never seen before in firearms.
MCM actually partnered with a bank, to provide a financing option. Welcome to Idaho, we do things different here. So for something like $66 a month, you can start shooting today. In order to get the package to a $2000 threshold required by the bank, MCM created a package. Delta S 9, spare magazine, Sig Romeo 5 optic. Which is a pretty awesome deal for what you are getting.
So, in summary, this extremely submachine gun looking pistol has all the goodies. SBA3 brace, that looks like it would fit your shoulder pretty nice, but none of us would, haha, do that. Check. Trigger that doesn’t suck? Check. Controls familiar and where Eugune Stoner by God intended them? Check. Side charger like a proper sub-gun? Check. And what if you decide later you want the quiet version? Well, they have that covered too. You can either have your current barrel chopped and a baffle stack added, or they will sell you an entire suppressed upper.
This one is cool and definitely worth checking out. It isn’t the cheapest plinker on the street, but it has enough upscale features to justify the cost. If you have been waiting on a high-end 9mm blaster, it just arrived.
Just read both your books “Last Son of the War God” and “Sword of the Caliphate” straight through, couldn’t put either down till finish. That is some bad-to-the-bone hard core shit dude! You’ve got some real talent and though maybe not “PG” appropriate these are begging for someone like Tarantino or Stone to come along and make movies out of them. Bit of a “sequel tease” leaving everyone hanging at the end of “Sword” which might not end well for a movie, though. BTW–did that mattress scene in the hanger really happen to you?? LOL
Love everything about it but the price. I have two kids in college, maybe after they graduate. The financing thing is also a great thing that they have worked out. Good luck to anyone who is able to get one.
