How to End a Fight in 3 Seconds

Authors S.H. Blannelberry

Let’s face facts, as long as there are strictly enforced gun-free zones, you’re not always going to be armed. In those instances, it helps to know how to quickly end a fight against a would-be attacker. Ryan Hoover of Fit-to-Fight and Funker Tactical shows us how to do just that.

Self-defense techniques need to be practiced (like shooting, like football, like whatever) in as close to \”game conditions\” as possible to be most effective. I believe the best option is to get away as quickly as possible but what if one has a chronic bad knee or simply has not kept in reasonable shape to run several blocks? Or, having just returned from New Orleans, been side walks where one has to walk single-file in a crowd. I will submit there is no silver bullet solution but that there are some minimum requirements foe which one should strive to being prepared. At least walking every day, keeping up muscle tone, shooting regularly, practicing a few self-defense techniques to help create space between oneself and an attacker, and thinking about \”what would I do?\” in a particular situation.

All looks good on paper. You must remember however the real world has a few surprises that can get you hurt or worse.

  • Gunter January 1, 2015, 11:07 pm

May seem like a great move but it puts you in danger of struggling with a larger opponent. Anything can happen in a struggle so it’s best to eliminate the threat quickly and move away, avoid contact unless absolutely necessary. Suggest that your right arm pivot from the elbow to opponents elbow, outside, while left arm pivots at the elbow to strike hard against opponents wrist. This will snap the opponents elbow. Fight over.

As Gunter points out, why would anyone want to attempt to have intimate sex with an attacker risking the Murphy principle, i.e., slippery street, he had a knife in his other hand down and out of sight, or a six four 300 pound pro ball player that will flip you off of him like an irritating fly and body slam you so hard on the concrete that you’ll be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life if you didn’t die from the subdural hematoma in your head. in the real world where he wouldn’t be standing still in a static demonstration and holding your shoulder like an old butt buddy?

There are several other better ways to get his grubby hands off you without kissing and hugging him, The first is Don’t let him get is hands on you in the first place? That falls under situational awareness. ALWAYS avoid and deflect any approach to your inner (ARMS REACH) Zones. It’s what the pro security people do with their clients. You’ll never see anyone get passed the ‘reaching’ part on Trump or any other high risk target in public before one or both of those bad boys (or sometimes girls) behind and to the side of their client puts him DOWN and OUT with one hit.

The problem with about 98 percent of these types of demonstrations is while they look good, in staged context, they rarely work in real time. Mainly because of all the variables and the attackers in a REAL attack would likely NOT be grabbing your shoulder or your shirt//jacket collar and standing there shaking or holding you, I just shake my head in disappointment whenI see some ‘into himself Sensei’ teaching something like that. Because they never mention that Most likely the attack is going to be a hard first strike to your surprised face that couldn’t move fast enough to ‘react’ avoid the initial ‘Action’ against you. And even if they did just put a shoulder ‘push’ on you, they wouldn’t just hold it there then they would more than likely be quickly following up with a rapid Beat Down, until they slammed you down and overwhelmed you, again probably with the help of a cohort besides!

But if something like the Demo sequence above happened in slow enough motion (or you were as fast as this instructor, which almost anyone is NOT without regular practice) As Gunter said, It would be easier, and smarter to simply do a forcible extrication from contact, (a couple quick violent strikes to remove his arm and vulnerable face targets or simple one eighty twist and spin around as step away and pull your knife if you couldn’t have a gun, and keep moving away so that if he insisted on coming after you then it would be obvious to the police or jury that you were in fear for your life so you tried to escape but had no other choice than put the tip of your blade deeply through his eye socket and maybe a nick and scratch to this throat to save your life.

By the way, the actual ‘rear naked choke’ this instructor illustrated is not the ‘best’ one for a serious job. There are a couple better leverage grasps/grips if you want maximum advantage to prevent an escape from him flipping or throwing you in less than a second before the ‘effect’ takes place. And remember some big apes with thick necks and muscles like steel cable might not react to a carotid choke that easily, and your ‘knock out’ time is extended.

And Like my Nam Vet Bro below implied, the choke is not meant to be so much a ‘submission’ hold in deadly hand to hand combat it’s designed first and foremost to kill in deployment. So you use your body more to get him off his feet almost immediately to neutralize that part of a struggle.

So, this is another one that you don’t want to try at home or even practice it on your kid brother or girlfriends without knowing what you’re doing.

The 1st reality is that about 95% of all martial arts taught today in conventional ‘wisdom’ (lol) is probably NOT going to work in real time dangerous situation.

The Second truth is that unlike a gun, you really NEED to be in a fair amount of physical condition, AND then you have to practice your moves in as real of a situation scenario as you can, or they simply won’t work. That’s why serious training clubs have some Redman equipment and do some full contact free sparring.

At a minimum I don’t certificate my advanced students unless they can punch a speed bag, including elbows as good as a boxer, full power kick and punch a heavy bag full blast with specific combinations for 30 seconds which I then want to see a 98% hit accuracy .repeat level placed on ‘Bob’.

In my humble but vastly experienced opinion, anything less than that ability will more likely get you hurt, that helped, in a fight. If you are thinking of taking up fight training, which is a good way to also keep physically fit, these days, I suggest you first read an article at Survivopedia.com by Mahatma Mujesbude about ‘Five Myths of Martial Arts’ before you decide how to approach it. It’ll save you a lot of time and money, and maybe even your life?

First of all WTF, you yammer on for 10 fucking paragraphs about how one of the world’s most respected security, military, and self defense “advisors” has no idea what they are talking about. As if this isn’t asinine enough, you wrap it up neatly with a self promotion? Mahatma Muhjesbude is either you, which you should have made clear, or you are using his name as your username, equally shady.

No fight, attack or other situation that is going to put one’s self in harms way is ever going to happen in slow-motion, happen ideally for the person put in harms way, nor is it going to be a perfect scenario for one method every time for every person.. The demonstration in the video is a proven method in certain situations, as stated clearly in the video, it is not a magic bullet to solve/end all attacks. You rambling about how other self-defense methods would only work in slow-motion, bringing up a Vietnam Veteran “friend” for support, and self promotion or whatever the hell it is, is all no more helpful to anyone in any situation except to help them find your website. Great free advertisement from a well pitched salesman….

I used this move in VIETNAM but we would use are knee to the groin to have complete control for a jungle jerk to the throut but in our case we would go for the KILL.

  • Gary January 1, 2015, 5:32 pm

Carolina Panther?! What, are you training defense linemen MMA techniques to get QB!? Anthony Munoz trained with a martial artist back in the day too

  • mickey January 1, 2015, 7:47 am

Nice move and of course by a trained martial artist seems so easy but I must say the best martial arts instruction I have ever received was and still is from the bible. “IT IS BETTER TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE”

Plan on a bit more than 3 to 5 seconds, maybe 15 to 30 seconds for lights to go out.

Good stuff, I like the slam in the lower back.
There are a number of open/closed frontal and rear attacks which have corresponding repelling moves to eliminate the threat; each is unique to the situation, the individuals and must be instinctive.
Based on my past It is not desirable to wait for someone to touch you. I have always been taught to act once a potential threat has telegraphed their intent in that ever so slight move toward me – it is always that little twitch in the shoulders.
At that point their mind is focused on their attack and not their defense. This catches them off balance [mentally and physically] just enough for me to take the advantage, and depending on the level of the threat, use my leverage to forcefully slam their weight into the ground.

    Thanks, time to practice.

  • dink winkerson December 2, 2014, 2:16 pm

One should think about carrying some kind of edged weapon. That being said, if you look up the primary video in the on youtube in the beginning of the article, you’ll find the little guy running his alligator mouth calling this guy on. Moral to the story there, don’t let your alligator mouth write a check your humming bird ass can’t cash

  • Nate December 2, 2014, 11:20 am

Sure, this looks good in a video, but without loads of practice you’ll not have the reflex to make this work. How about you show a demonstration of it’s effectiveness? Many masters of the martial arts used to give demonstrations where they were actually being attacked to show just how good they were. You can teach a monkey to swing a hammer, but would you let it build you a deck?

    • mickey January 1, 2015, 7:51 am

As a general contractor I have to teach monkeys to use a hammer often but the end result usually needs to be redone by an expert non ape carpenter.

    • Issac Asimov January 1, 2015, 3:12 pm

Depends upon how much the monkey charged to build my deck…

Nice demo. I have squared off with big boys and that’s a fight u don’t wanna have. Comes down to moving faster and taking a few to the face and recover quickly . This method is great provided opponent isn’t as fast as you to pivot, isn’t wearing clothing protecting his neck, ability for the smaller guy to actually lock a choke hold and keep it till big boy gets choked out. If you miss than he knows your trying to flank him and will use longer arm reach to land massive punches while you need to get close… know how to handle yourself. ..or walk away if you ain’t got the stones to do this. Big guys use size to intimidate, I’m 6′ 185 and former ?, and taken down 6’5 280 within a few minutes. Thanks.

    • Richard H. Seigle January 1, 2015, 9:42 am

I learned this move as a U.S.M.C. recruit in 1967.We called it the “naked strangle hold”.It is a very effective “fight ending move”. I really enjoyed your video and your professionalism.

      • riggarob January 1, 2015, 7:32 pm

April 4 ’68 for me. That phrase sure brought back some Kool memories !

    • Mahatma Muhjesbude May 1, 2017, 11:35 am

And above all, if you are a jungle fighter, DON’T TEACH A FUCKING MONKEY HOW TO SHOOT YOUR 16, OR LET HIM SEE YOU THROWING GRENADES!
