Esquire Writer: ‘Okay, Now I Actually Do Want To Take Your Guns’

Dave Holmes (Photo:

Dave Holmes wants to take your guns.  Because he is angry.  And because he believes you and me and all law-abiding gun owners are responsible for gun-related violence in America.  Yup.  Parkland, it was our fault.  Santa Fe, it too, was our fault.

Who is Dave Holmes?  Don’t know?  No worries, I didn’t either.  He is Esquire’s Los Angeles-based Editor-at-Large.

In an article titled, “Okay, Now I Actually Do Want To Take Your Guns,” he made the case for disarming everyone in America.

“All along, as American life has gotten deadlier, as our kids have gotten less safe in their schools, you have had the opportunity to work with the vast majority of Americans who support the sensible reform of our gun laws,” said Holmes.  ” You have had the chance to preserve your own rights as we work together to keep our gun regulations in step with gun technology. You haven’t.”

By not supporting gun control we’re causing killers to kill. By the same logic, you should also chop off your man-junk to prevent rape.

Holmes goes on to admonish us for not supporting “sensible” measures like banning bump stocks or stripping 2A rights from adult citizens under the age of 21.  The argument being that our inaction on gun control is what’s causing psychopaths to shoot up schools and drug dealers to gun down their rivals.

By the same logic, we ought to chop off our male appendages to stop rape.  Right?  I mean, if it’s a hardware problem and not a software problem.  Just get rid of the hardware.  Problem solved!  Maybe Holmes can get behind the self-castration-to-stop-rape movement.

“So now I’m angry. Now I’m finished trying to reason with you. So now I, a guy who was ambivalent about guns just a few years ago, want to take your guns away. All of them. I want to take them all and melt them down and shape them into a giant sphere and then push it at you so you have to run away from it like Indiana Jones for the rest of your lives,” wrote Homes.

While the anger is understandable.  I mean, we’re all angry.  Gun owners and non-gun owners alike.  It’s unacceptable that 10 people lose their lives at the hands of sicko.  What’s inexcusable, though, is for a published journalist or “editor” to be so fast and loose with the facts.  By which I mean dead wrong with his assertions.

No, Mr. Holmes, America hasn’t gotten deadlier!!! Where are you getting your information from?  Michael Bloomberg?

If Holmes wants to argue that there’s been a slight uptick in the homicide rate from 2014 to 2016, sure, he can make that argument. But generally speaking, America is not deadlier than it was two decades ago. Not even close. (Photo:

Since the ’90s violence, including the gun homicide rate and shootings, are waaaaay down.  Not to mention the fact that there are fewer school shootings.  I know that doesn’t quite fit the anti-NRA narrative Holmes is promulgating.  But those are the facts.

Schools are safer today than they were in the ’90s.  Even New York Times columnist David Brooks will acknowledge that.  (Photo:

Don’t believe me?  Ask New York Times columnist David Brooks.  Even he, who is not shy about his zealotry for banning guns, is objective enough to reject the insinuation that sending a child to school is tantamount to sending them into a war zone.

“It should be said, each of these events is super horrible, but we shouldn’t be scare mongering. The number of school shootings has plummeted since the 1990s. Schools are about the safest place a child can be. And so we shouldn’t get carried away about that,” said Brooks on NBC’s “Meet the Press” this past Sunday.

Oh, and another thing, Trump via the DOJ is in the process of banning bump stocks. So, you’re getting your wish there.  Problem with that is it will do nothing to address gun-related violence.  Again, I hate to let facts get in the way of gun-grabbing mythology but reciprocating stocks are range novelties that don’t increase the lethality of a rifle.  If anything, they make the rifle harder to control and the shooter less accurate.  Did you know that?

To his credit, Holmes does get one thing right.  He isn’t taking our guns.

“God help me, I want to take all of your guns out of your hands, by myself, right now,” he said. “It won’t happen, of course. So let’s meet in the middle. Let’s meet at…literally anything.”

How about this.  How about we meet when you demonstrate that you have a basic understanding of the facts that surround this debate?  Until then, don’t bother reaching out or threatening to do something that makes about as much sense a lopping off your manhood.

The real problem behind mass shootings is not stricter gun laws or the ban of a specific rifle or magazine capacity; these are merely tools. Laws are already established in order for an individual to obtain a firearm, background checks are being conducted in order for someone to obtain such. The real root of the problem which no one is mentioned lies in mental health, parental responsibility and most importantly “PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES”. These companies not only haven’t been mentioned by the media but are funding doctors which prescribe psychotropic medicine to our children and teenagers. Have any of you read the warning label of medicine such as Prozac, Adderall and Zoloft?

The commercials and the warning labels state: ” This medication might cause suicidal or homicidal ideation’. Have you guys looked into this? Here’s a link… To include Sandy Hook and other major shootings… 36 out 36 shooters were ALL on psychotropic medicine. Parents need to stop medicating their children and educating them old school style. Spend time with your kids and don’t let these doctors dictate what kind of medicine they should be on.

Open your eyes people! It’s not about gun control. It’s medication control.

This is exactly the problem and well said. But like any major cooperation that makes certain wealthy people more wealthy there will be no government empower change to way they do business.

The only way to stop air Hi-jacking was to secure the OUTER perimeter and install X-Ray equipment for baggage and metal detection equipment for personnel. Our children need protection but having a facility where a killer can walk on to the property and into the facility with a loaded weapon and not be confronted will never stop the killings from happening again. The local government and school boards don’t want real world answers to their problem. They puppet to do the one thing that will never prevent a mass shooting again by taking away the guns. Your children’s safety is not worth the cost to prevent a mass shooting from happening again that is why you don’t here of real security and protection being done.
It is criminal and these leaders need to charged with a crime by not going to the same process that we travelers get to enjoy just to fly safely with out the fear of being HI-Jacked.

You always did, it’s just now you think enough sheeple are on your side that can admit it.

He looks like a BRITISH Citizen to me, just saying.

What I Love about Anti-Gunners wanting to take our Guns is this: How are you going to take our Guns when you don’t own any?

This guy sounds like a massive c unt and should get his balls hoofed.

My father subscribed to Esquire when I was a kid. Back then, the contributors were a galaxy of literary stars…Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dreiser, Steinbeck, Darrow et al. Today, the magazine’s slick pages are filled with leftist dreck. It’s a damn shame.

As the old saying goes, “the truth will always come out in the end”. They’re coming out and saying what they used to avoid hinting at, trying to camouflage their intentions with all manner of half-hearted protestations to the contrary. The gloves have come off.

Yes, they do want our guns. But they also understand that they need the force of The State to accomplish that, as they don’t have the intestinal fortitude to attempt confiscation themselves, for fear of the very likely consequences. Their moral cowardice in not having the stones to put their own lives on the line to accomplish their ostensibly ‘worthy’ goal is plainly evident. In the end, men like Mr. Holmes demonstrate that they have nothing between their legs but air.

This is the kind of stuff we have to deal with when firearm enthusiasts and gun owners as a community are so resistant to even participate in the discussion. We have to be willing to compromise or this guy and his ilk will be the ones taking our guns away sometime in the next two Democratic presidencies.

    • shrugger May 25, 2018, 3:12 am

We’ve been “compromising” for a century. We’re done with that “discussion”.

    • Darryl May 25, 2018, 4:23 am

NO!, you’re wrong we can’t give the nut or any of the others one thing as it won’t matter anyway because him and the likes of same are only after one thing and that’s to take the guns from everyone anyway. so giving a little here and there will matter not.

there are all the laws on the books now that they are screaming for so more laws won’t do any good. if you look at these school’s most times the kids have been beat down and made fun of for years and then they just had enough is why they shoot up the school’s so if these kids want peace in their schools they should stop the bullying of kids who don’t fit into their groups’. but they won’t because they have to do this so they feel better then other’s.

NO, besides only the law-abiding follow the rules not the crooks and they will still have theirs even after we gave ours up, so thats not going to happen. plus most of the ones of voting age have been democRATS so why aren’t they telling their own to stop with shooting people up? because the end game is “take their guns, all of them”.

    • Nemo May 25, 2018, 6:44 am

As any student of the last century’s history will tell you, appeasement of those with tyrannical intent rarely worked well. And make no mistake, tyranny is the gun-grabber’s intent.

They know that they cannot ram their liberal (translation: communist) agenda down the throats of Americans so long as there are those able to resist it…and them. Removing the means of that resistance has always been the first goal of any self-proclaimed ‘progressive’.

    • Trevor Teague May 25, 2018, 7:33 am

Umm… No. We all know you’re nothing but an anti gun troll, blue dog. If you and Mr Holmes can take them, I guess you can have them. I invite you to come and try. Please come and try…

    • Terry D Wood May 25, 2018, 8:28 am

Your comment has to be sarcasm, right? I mean you can’t possibly believe that any discussion with these people will result in anything other than their desire to confiscate all firearms from all American gun owners.

These people have now admitted they have that as their only agenda. They want the state (Feds) to raid all law abiding American homes and confiscated all firearms present. They realize that’s an impossibility given 300 million guns in the hands of civilians in this country so they try to erode our rights a little at a time knowing that all out confiscation will result in a total insurrection and blood bath as 90% of gun owners will NOT give up their rightfully and constitutionally owned firearms without a fight.

When will these people stop blaming the inanimate object for what the criminal and deranged in our population do with it and start placing the responsibility where it belongs , on the finger on the trigger. I have 4 firearms in my home. A shotgun, two .22 semi-automatic rifles and a 9mm handgun. Two are in a closet, one in the corner of my bedroom and one on the night stand next to the bed. All are loaded. None have ever left the house on their own and gone out and shot up the neighborhood or any other place.

Face it. The people advocating for this confiscation are merely elitist leftists who know there is no way they can impose their ideology by force, since they can’t win at the ballot box, unless we are disarmed and only the state has weapons. It’s classic in every socialist/communist country in the world to disarm the populace before trying to assume control of everyone’s life. They are despicable human beings who hate our country and its founding and wish to transform it into one of equality where everyone is equally poor, and equally miserable.

    • joefoam May 25, 2018, 9:52 am

We would like to enter into a discussion but they don’t want one. We have been compromising for a century and have got nothing in return which is the definition of compromise. The lefts want appeasement, check your history and see how appeasement worked out for the world. They are right, we are wrong and if we disagree we will be punished.

Thomas Paine, writing to religious pacifists in 1775:

“The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside. Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them; the weak would become a prey to the strong.”

    • Jack May 25, 2018, 12:03 pm

      Exactly that…

  • Tom May 21, 2018, 9:25 pm

Tell him to come and get them!

  • SeppW May 21, 2018, 4:13 pm

No meeting in the middle is possible when all liberals and gun grabbers want is more restrictive laws that only will affect law-abiding citizens. Impossible to discuss anything logically with a person who abhors the Constitution and individual rights and freedoms..

They never address the people using a firearm to commit a violent crime.

This guy is like the USA Today reporter in her article. She claims shotguns and revolvers are less lethal than AR-15s. She also said AR-15s can fire twice as fast s these “less-than-lethal” firearms; ignorant and perpetuating the narrative, like all liberals do to obfuscate facts.

Guess she never saw close up what a shotgun can do at close range.
