A county in Florida is the latest in a string of local municipalities across the country to declare itself a sanctuary against unconstitutional gun control laws — but the first in Florida to do so.

Lake County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously this week to approve a resolution vowing not to enforce gun control measures that “increase the power of the Federal government far beyond that which the Constitution intended,” according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The resolution’s author, Lake County Commissioner Josh Blake, called out “prominent national candidates” and “authoritarian control freaks” who call for gun bans and mandatory buybacks. His statements doubtless reference comments from former Democratic presidential candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, who said during a debate that he would confiscate AR-15s and AK-47s.

“Many Americans have been absolutely shocked to hear recent pronouncements by prominent national candidates who are vying for the presidency of the United States threatening and even outrightcalling for national gun bans on some of the most popular and commonly owned rifles in this country,” Blake said.

“Many of them … have demanded mandatory buybacks which is just a fancy way of saying we’re going to force local law enforcement to confiscate weapons — legally owned weapons — from their fellow citizens,” he said.

Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell wrote a letter saying he “fully” supports the resolution.

Lake County is just the latest county to declare itself a “sanctuary” from gun control efforts. Local governments in Illinois, Colorado, Washington, Arizona, California, and Texas have prohibited funds or resources being used to enforce gun control laws they believe are unconstitutional.

Like in Lake County, many governments have passed sanctuary resolutions in response to gun control efforts.

Effingham County, Illinois, is often credited with being the first local municipality to pass a gun-sanctuary resolution when they did so in 2018. At the time, Darrell Miller, the co-director of the Duke Center for Firearms Law, told CNN that such measures demonstrated unnecessary fear.

“Why are they fearful any gun regulation leads to some kind of confiscation? Well, I don’t know,” Miller said. “This has been a talking point for gun organizations like the National Rifle Association since the late 1970s, which is, ‘You can’t allow any kind of gun regulation because it will lead to universal civilian disarmament.’”

After O’Rourke’s comments, along with numerous proposals from Democratic candidates to ban or “buy back” firearms, the gun control lobby has been more forthright about its desire to confiscate certain types of firearms.

Politifact noted in October that O’Rourke has been asked at least twice whether he supported confiscating firearms. On both occasions, he said yes.

In one instance, CNN host Chris Cuomo asked O’Rourke, “All right, so let’s state the proposition. Are you, in fact, in favor of gun confiscation?”

“Yes, when it comes to AR-15s and AK-47s, weapons designed for use on a military battlefield. …So, when it comes to those weapons, Chris, the answer is yes,” O’Rourke replied.

Oh yeah, remember back a little while when they were going to have Beto Beat Off take charge of taking our guns– HAHAHA OUT LOUD, what a frickin’ joke!!! The only one is breaking the laws are the feds. In breaking the supreme law of the land the Constitution the guarantees you the right to bear arms. And the Fourth Amendment Meanwhile
You’re letting out criminals out in the streets.

I know the county has said they won’t enforce any federal laws that run contradictory to the second amendment, but what about Florida state laws? Individual states are becoming more dangerous to their residents than the Feds.

That’s Great News. Who is going to be the first person to sue (Florida and federal governments)? As all laws clearly violate and severely restrict the constitution’s original wording and intent. Dumbass politicians have never understood “shall not be infringed” Any elected official not understanding and defending this is committing treason and should be dealt with as such. DRAIN THE SWAMP

“Buyback”… BULL CRAP!!! For one thing, that item in question was never owned by the government (unless we are talking about U.S. surplus) to begin with so there is no way on earth they could buy anything “back.” And even if former government property, they had long since relinquished any claim of ownership of the item. It’s just plain confiscation pure and simple, even theft as long as the LAWFUL owner has no desire to part with what is being taken from them.

They will probably try, and succeed, in bullying this county into line. They really couldn’t take any action by force, that would bring too much negative attention on all the “sanctuary cities” they openly support. No, they’ll just start cutting off all the Federal funds that all state and local governments so depend on and they’ll have no choice to to fall in line again.

But, I sure do applaud them for sticking their necks out like that!!

O’ROUKE WANTS TO START A CIVIL WAR IN THIS COUNTRY I THINK. TRYING TO TAKE BY FORCE GUNS THAT WERE BOUGHT LEGALLY. NOT GOOD . I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THERE ARE OVER 338000 GUNS IN THE USA THAT ARE OWNED LEGALLY. ABOUT 20 TO 30000 OF THEM ARE AR-15. THAT’S NOT INCLUDING THE AK-47,SKS, ANY OTHER BRAND OF ASSAULT RIFLES THAT’S OUT THERE. THEY NEVER TALK ABOUT THE AK-47 THEY ALWAYS PICK ON THE AR-15, WHATS UP WITH THAT? BETO DROP OUT AND GO HOME, NO ONE LIKES YOU AND YOUR VIEWS AND IDEAS. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OWNING A GUN. I WAS TAUGHT HOW TO USE ONE WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD. I NEVER SHOT ANYTHING THAT I COULDN’T EAT AND NEVER EVER POINTED IT AT ANYONE. I’VE TAUGHT MY SON AND DAUGHTER THAT SAME THING AND THEY ARE GREAT SHOOTERS, BETTER THAN DAD. I HOPE THAT WE DON’T GET SOME KIND OF DEM. OR LIB. THAT WANTS TO TAKE AWAY OUR GUNS IN THE NEXT ELECTION.

In the recent debates, Beto stated he owned several firearms he inherited which would likely mean he avoided a background check. He should explain those circumstances in greater detail.

Beto should also explain whether “weapons of war” included the 1911 or the Glock 19 et cetera. Why or why NOT?

Beto can might also explain whether AR-15’s are somehow in violation of the Geneva Convention?
