While Virginians work to block sweeping gun-control measures authored by Democratic lawmakers, Republicans down the coast in Florida are proposing some of those same anti-gun policies.

A Republican-controlled Senate committee voted unanimously on Monday to pass an omnibus bill that would restrict gun sales, ban private sellers at gun shows, impose safe storage requirements, and mandate a three-day waiting period to obtain firearms.

The bill (SB 7028) is a “priority” of Republican Senate President Bill Galvano, according to local media. Galvano asked the Senate Infrastructure and Security Committee to vote on the measure a day before the legislature’s 2020 session is set to begin, and all five Republicans on the committee voted in favor, including committee chairman Senator Tom Lee.

“I know that you don’t see NRA members in the headlines of these mass shootings,” Lee told reporters following Monday’s meeting. “But we have a job to do. We can’t just sit by idly while our children are killing children and pretend this isn’t happening.”

The measure prohibits all private transfers of firearms “on property to which the public has the right of access,” essentially eliminating private sales at gun shows and other events. Sellers who are not federally licensed gun dealers and want to conduct a transfer on publicly accessible property will be required to obtain the services of a licensed dealer who can perform a background check.

For sales not on publicly accessible property, the bill requires the seller to confirm the buyer is over 21 years of age, and make and preserve a dated record of the sale. The record must include the make, model, and serial number of the firearm along with the buyer’s name, date of birth, and ID number.

In addition, the seller must compose an affidavit signed by the buyer that includes all of the information above along with the buyer’s answers to a list of questions similar (though not identical) to the form used by the ATF in firearms transfers. The seller must also have that affidavit notarized.

The measure imposes a three-day waiting period to purchase a firearm but provides exceptions for those with a valid concealed carry license and those who wish to purchase a rifle or shotgun and have completed a hunter’s safety course.

The proposal also mandates safe storage of firearms where minors under the age of 18 or “persons with unsound mind” may be able to gain access to them. Previous law only required safe storage of firearms when children under the age of 16 may be present.

Marion Hammer, the primary lobbyist in Florida for the National Rifle Association, said the measure contains “the worst universal background check language I have ever seen.”

“It appears to be an actual attempt to ban private sales through red tape and fear,” she said. “Asking average citizens to create what amounts to a government form and get it notarized is ridiculous.”

The legislation is “nothing less than gun control on steroids,” Hammer said.

There is currently no companion legislation in the House, but Sen. Lee promised the Senate president and the Speaker of the House would be coordinating in the coming weeks.

How do we record all of these firearms that we lost in a boating accident?

  • D. B. Lawton January 19, 2020, 4:42 am

Since the Reconstructed State of Florida wishes to be under “federal” rule, rather than the sovereign republic which it was intended to be, and as such, must follow federal protocol. These politicians seem to forget that the Second Amendment BINDS government from infringing on the right of the people to keep AND BEAR arms.
This is definitely infringement. Despite this sissy boy’s wish to stop his kids from killing other kids, he is STILL bound by his oath (not that politicians are honorable) to uphold and defend the Constitution. He is in clear violation of any such oath.
Violating that oath makes him unfit to fulfill that office.

When the politicians say this is for your good, BEWARE.

We can hope that the Governor vetos this but if he doesnt thenits time to vote in Demorats to those positions.

You need conservative politicians and not communists, socialists, liberal, or RHINO’s like the Florida senate is doing now. Please explain how gun toting criminals will comply with any of these bills. I also see it as a way
of closing down gun shows by litigating them which is also unconstitutional. Also, these laws get innocent police and citizens killed by trying to enforce them. Grandma and Grandpa will not give up their guns and brave officer Pete is just doing his job enforcing these anti-American laws and someone will be killed and it’s just stupid laws that do that. Why don’t these politicians read the Constitution and Bill of Rights to defend our freedoms?; Because they don’t have to; even when they took an oath to them.

How can it be legal for someone who is not a permanent resident of a state to infuse large sums into the political process of that state? This is serious question. I can understand it’s legality at the federal level because legal state citizens should be able to lobby federal officials, but it seems immoral for a state government to allow non-permanent residents the ability purchase the political and legal process of said state. Beyond the fact that citizens rights are being diminished, the process which facilitates that diminishment seems immoral and needs to be stopped on a state-by-state basis as quickly as possible.

I suggested that Virginians turn Michael King, er,,,Martin Luther King Day (Monday the 20th) into TAR & FEATHER DAY. I recommend the same for Floridians. Take these RINO traitors to task. If your elected official fails to follow the CONSTITUTION to the letter, he is nothing more than a communist traitor. TRASH. Take out the trash people.

I would like to know exactly how many children were killed by people who would have been violating ANY of the provisions of this bill. I’m wracking my brain trying to think of a situation where a person who wants to kill a child will only do so if he can go to a gun show, avoid any paperwork, and commit the crime within 72 hours.

PLEASE STAY IN YOUR LIBERAL STATE’S/COUNTRY’S IF YOU CAN’T LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!

Seems like that whole Southern east coast is changing over to the Left. Next will be Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and so on. Florida is where all the Northerner aggressors go to retire and be safe and exploit having fun in the sun. You are being converted into being true Socialists and sheep.

  • ~ Occams January 17, 2020, 11:20 am

Well, there’s your ‘sainted’ republiconmen. Finally ‘speaking up’ for your 2nd.

    Oh. Wait.

Just like your savior Trump, who’s signed more anti-2nds in 3 years than Obama did in 8.

The dems’ are just leading the gun-ban, so in case it’s not yet clear?

NO SLAVE OWNER WANTS AN ARMED SLAVE. Period

When you all finally get this, MAYBE things will change. Until then, those that hold all the power won’t let those who hold none GET the power.

    Then Cesar votes you out.

  • Mr. Sparkles January 17, 2020, 9:50 am

Republican only in name. Republican by definition recognizes the constitution as the law of the land and recognizes the meaning of “… shall not be infringed.”

Recall all those who voted in favor.

Glad I do not live even close to these rhinos.

  • James January 17, 2020, 9:26 am

Virginia is ready to start civil war over gun control, does Florida want to be next? We Floridians need to start a recall vote to remove this traitor from office.

    • Fal Phil January 18, 2020, 9:51 am

You have to realize that the population growth in Florida is fueled by foreign immigrants and snowbirds, both from anti-gun cultures. We should have expected this. Frankly, I am surprised it has taken this long. The majority of the voters in The Sunshine State probably support this legislation.

  • BigHat January 17, 2020, 9:23 am

Please, let’s find a GOP challenger to unseat this piece of sh*t ASAP.

    • Winston January 17, 2020, 7:34 pm

The GOP is the problem, because it’s just proven yet again to be weak and almost phony resistance. Limbaugh and Hannity are the cheerleaders for people such as Galvano and Pence.

  • Tyrone January 17, 2020, 8:51 am

“We can’t just sit by idly while our children are killing children…” Sorry Dudett, my children are not doing what your children are doing and you get NO support or vote from me or my fellow Floridians & Conchs….

  • TF January 17, 2020, 8:49 am

I moved to Florida 10 years ago to get away from the nazi regime of Prince Cuomo in what used to be the Great State in NY (excluding NY City). We all need to take heed of what’s going on. Let’s vote out “All” these worthless politicians out of office. Never forget this is just the beginning of what will follow….

  • srsquidizen January 17, 2020, 7:51 am

This demonstrates how the Republican label on a politician does not guarantee protection of your 2A rights. People you MUST vote in Republican primaries after finding out which candidate actually will. Granted this law is “moderate” compared to what Democrat confiscators want (looks like it’s designed to generate revenue from CC permits and notary licenses) but it is still outrageous for Republicans to be supporting. No matter what state you live in, find out where your GOP politicians really stand and get rid of these hypocrites in the primaries. That way you won’t be left with no other choice but a left-wing gun grabber in the general.

    • Big John January 17, 2020, 10:09 am

+1 on the Primary process comment, we all need to get involved and throw these soft ass, self centered Asshats out of the party! Let’s start with Mitt Romney the Masshole Carpetbagger who ran in Utah!!!

Typical pandering RINO’s, these @ss#oles never learn!

      • Old Fed January 18, 2020, 12:42 am

I confess that while I dissolve in gales of laughter that the Veterans Administration contends that I suffer from P.TS.D. (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) from my service in Vietnam so conversely I suppose that the Honorable Senator Willard Mitt Romney Member of Congress suffers from T.D.S. (Trump Derangement Syndrome) from his many years of service in politics. Because while eighteen year old kids like myself were fighting and dying in the verdant jungles of Vietnam he spent two-and-a-half years in France as a Mormon missionary starting in 1966 and then went on to Brigham Young University and by 1971, he had participated in the political campaigns of both parents. Must be nice to have mommy and daddy’s money and political juice to keep you delicate white body getting your glutinous maximus from being shot off by some seventy pound Viet Minh little girl soldier armed with a World War two M-1 Carbine putting round after round into your aforementioned glutinous maximus while you scream in pain. Xinloi manoi! The only good thing I can say about Senator Willard Mitt Romney is that he did not claim to be a Vietnam Veteran like the Honorable Senator Richard Blumenthal Democrat of Connecticut.

Hitler has shown us….Our Fore-Fathers have warned us. We know what the truth is.

  • John January 17, 2020, 6:59 am

I am frustrated and politicians who create problems. This example from Florida is a good example. Something is passed just so they can say they “did something”. Doing something is NOT good enough, they must do the “RIGHT THING”. Sadly, that requires too much effort for 90% of our political class, they have neither the stamina nor the intellectual power to figure out what the “right thing” is and then implement it. A three day waiting period or a 100 day waiting period doesn’t solve the problem of mass shooting, it doesn’t even address the issue.

  • Anthony Romano January 17, 2020, 6:55 am

I would like this RINO to explain just exactly how this will reduce crime after all does he know that criminals don’t follow ANY laws? I guess he’s either stupid, gullible, ignorant and probably all 3!

  • M. Atkinson January 16, 2020, 2:06 pm

Let it be known to your representatives that if they support this you will vote them out next time around!

    • Gregory Romeu January 17, 2020, 7:58 am

How about removing them from office right NOW for violating their oath of office, a high crime?

  • Tom H January 15, 2020, 6:51 pm

The only reason people attend gun shows is to view newer guns and maybe find a classic rare find at a decent price which is only sold by private owners. This is going to cause many to loose income, like for those whom do this as a part time business or as a hobby.

  • Will Drider January 15, 2020, 6:19 pm

MORE “Knee jerk reaction” gun control: Must do something! These RINOs won’t be in office after the next election!

  • Jaque January 15, 2020, 6:18 pm

How many convicts buy guns at gun shows ? Existing laws ban such persons from firearm possession.
These proposed laws are cracks in the wall of freedom. Cracks get bigger over time. This is one step to the ultimate goal of total tyranny.

Florida is one election away from communist control. Virginia is already there. Texas and Georgia and North Carolina are next.

We the people allowed the mass inflow of illegals and migrants who prefer socialism and democrats and gun control. We did so by our vote or non vote. We were not forward thinking the effects of immigration to our freedoms. Now we are in the fight of our lives to preserve our freedoms. The future is dark. The next Democrat president will take the US into Communism and tyranny.

Do you trust the DOJ and FBI. I dont. Its clear no one will be punished for Russiagate. They will not change the structure of these agencies to prevent recurrence of the crimes.

And so we must choose our individual choice of action when our arms are banned and confiscation raids begin. Because when democrats take the white house that will be number one on their list.

  • SuperG January 15, 2020, 10:19 am

He Sounds like a RINO to me. This is one way to not get re-elected.

  • Bobs your uncle January 14, 2020, 10:27 pm

Well there you have it, problem solved! that will make it impossible for criminals to have guns, no terrorist or random Saudi would mess with that law, they would be in violation, watch out criminal gangs.classic example of” do something even if its wrong” Theres a name for that grin.
