Former CNN Anchor, Army Veteran Saves Wife in Motel 6 Shootout

A former CNN correspondent and Army veteran turned the tables on an armed robber during a shootout in a New Mexico Motel 6 room.

Chuck de Caro and his wife, former Headline News anchor Lynne Russell, were on their way to California when they stopped at a Motel 6. Both de Caro and Russell have valid concealed carry weapon permits and both had their guns nearby when an armed man demanded money.

Russell had left to retrieve something from her car, but the suspect stuck a gun in her face and forced her back into the motel room. De Caro was in the shower, and when he heard the commotion he quickly engaged the man and “tried to change the guy’s mind.”

But the suspect wanted money, and wasn’t willing to leave without it. De Caro and Russell’s guns were in the nightstand, and when the crook wasn’t looking, Russell slipped one of the guns into her purse, handing it off to her husband.

Suddenly, the suspect opened fire, and de Caro dove behind a piece of furniture and shot back, fatally striking the suspect.

De Caro was hit three times three times and transported to an area hospital. He was rushed to surgery and is expected to survive.

“It was a shootout,” said Russell. “When Chuck exhausted the weapon, he was bleeding profusely.”

His wife, Russell, said she is proud of her husband’s actions.

“I am really proud of him,” said Russell. “I thank him over and over for saving my life. He really is my hero.”

Albuquerque police spokesman Tanner Tixie said the shooting was likely random, adding that he didn’t believe de Caro and Russell were targeted for their former connections with CNN.

“They weren’t targeted for who they were,” said Tixier. “We believe the offender didn’t realize the victim’s husband was in the motel [room]. He believed he had an easy target. That turned out not to be the case obviously.”

If it wasn’t for this couple’s quick thinking and extreme bravery, the outcome of this tragic situation could have been exponentially worse, proving once again that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

And for all those gun control advocates that say otherwise, Russell has a strong-worded message: “If you don’t want to carry please don’t. Then shut the f*ck up about it. Make your own decisions.”

Damn…. could have gone so many different ways. Stay cool calm and Collective divert attention and get to your weapon….good job!! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, prime example that it can go down anywhere at anytime.
