Speed Up Your Glock: Franklin Armory Debuts Binary Trigger for Glock 17 – SHOT Show 2022

Authors Jordan Michaels SHOT Show 2022

Since its inception several years ago, Franklin Armory’s binary trigger line has expanded to include a huge variety of rifle platforms. Now, they’re jumping into the wonderful world of handguns.

Dubbed the “G-S173,” Franklin Armory’s new binary trigger and slide kit enable a Glock 17 to fire a round on the trigger pull and on the release—what the company calls “binary mode.”

GunsAmerica editor True Pearce called it “crazy,” “pretty awesome,” and “super impressive” when he got a chance to take the G-S173 for a spin at SHOT Show 2022.

MSRP: $899

The G-S173 kit ships with a flat-faced trigger along with a new slide. The slide features a “function selector” that allows the user to fire in standard and binary modes.

In standard mode, the pistol functions normally. In binary mode, the gun will fire a round on the pull and on the release. Users can also cancel the trigger release shot by toggling the selector to standard mode while holding the trigger.

The model we shot was fitted with a brace, but company reps told us the gun can be fired in binary mode without one. We didn’t test that claim, but you can bet we will when we publish a full review of the G-S173.

This is a prototype and a proof of concept.

Franklin Armory reps told us that the model they brought to the range was a prototype. The final product will likely look different, but the functionality will be the same.

The full kit isn’t available yet, but company reps did give us a price: $899. That might sound steep, and it’s probably more than you paid for your original Glock 17.

But as Pearce points out in the video above, the feel of the trigger on the G-S173 rivals some aftermarket options. It features a flat face, a crisp break, and a positive reset (when not in binary mode, of course). We didn’t have the chance to break out the trigger scale, but the weight is also comparable to aftermarket trigger options. We’d estimate somewhere in the 5-6-pound range.

The trigger is great even without the binary functionality.

If you’re in the market for an aftermarket trigger and slide, you’re already looking at dropping a couple hundred bucks. Franklin Armory believes customers will be willing to spend another couple hundred to add the kind of functionality that the binary trigger offers.

The worst part of this new glock accessory is all the nay sayers on here, people complaining about everything from its legality (atf already cleared these as legal), to the cost of ammo (are you buying it) and how much the anti gunners are going to bitch, who cares, they’ll always find something to bitch about (just like a bunch of people on here) , get a grip, either buy it or don’t, simple as that! Just quit minding my business! And FYI, Glock Pistols are a lot safer that the majority of handguns out there with a round in the chamber, had one on my side since the early 80’s, zero problems! Try to admire this company for coming up with something new, not just a copy of a hundred year idea….

  • EasyEddie January 21, 2022, 10:41 am

Well, this will certainly give Bloomberg a severe case of agita.

  • Tony January 20, 2022, 9:24 am

Product is great, presentation leaves a lot to be desired with only one person with a microphone, customers firing their weapons during presentation (couldn’t wait for 5 minutes and the best of them all, calling a magazine a ‘CLIP’!!!!!

  • Godfrey Washington January 20, 2022, 7:28 am

Can’t wait!!! Will most definitely get one. If they’re available as a trigger kit we’ll probably get two!

  • Ej harbet January 19, 2022, 3:53 pm

    Kinda want.
Start with a naked frame off gb and build it up with the kit.
Rapid fire like love will find a way.
A fully transferable g18 would be nice but without license and sot impossible.for those of us who prefer not to do 10years fed and lose our rights. This will do.
    Let’s go Brandon!

  • FirstStateMark January 18, 2022, 10:29 pm

It will take one mass shooting and the Dems will discover it and will be outlawed soon after just like the bump stock. BTW – the price is outrageous.

    • logic January 19, 2022, 6:33 am

You realize that was trump, not the dems right ?

      • Rusty January 19, 2022, 1:19 pm

        Logic:

It couldn’t have been Trump. It HAD to be Obama, you are just remembering it wrong.

I mean, the things were given two (or was it three) letters by the ATF stating they functioned within the law under Obama, so why would a Republican start us down the slippery slope of Executive Fiat over such a legal accessory??

Of course I know it was Trump who killed em, without congressional action. Oh, based on one instance where they were “supposedly” involved in the illegal actions of a deranged mad-man.

Kinda weird, Federal Parks now follow the rules of their HOST state concerning Concealed Carry, AND you only need to INFORM the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of your jurisdiction when obtaining/building Class 3 fun toys, as opposed to asking for a permission slip!! Both changes SIGNED INTO LAW by #44!!!!!!!

Everyone needs to read between the lines of the American Rifleman, and other supposed Gun Rights Organizations, and see exactly what is transpiring. LaPierre probably doesn’t need another multi thousand dollar suit from our dues; especially when he wouldn’t stand against Trump and tell him the TRUMPSTOCK BAN would be the beginning of the end!!!

  • Jerry J Reed January 18, 2022, 5:30 pm

I like a binary trigger on my Banshee.
I could see the double tap benefits with Glock and perhaps other pistol brands.
Maybe a Ruger 57 since 5.7 is a softer recoil or hell, even a 19/2011 pistol.

  • Scotty Gunn January 18, 2022, 5:23 pm

Interesting , but not for $899. $299 or even $350, maybe. Plus, putting that stock on is a huge no-no.

  • Steven Weinstock January 18, 2022, 4:17 pm

Perfect if you in a combat situation or fire fight and need cover fire. I would not buy one, but they seem pretty cool for anyone who wants something close to auto.

  • jerry January 18, 2022, 3:44 pm

I have never liked or wanted a binary trigger on anything, but with the selector I think I want one for the unlikely but possible event of multiple attackers. The selector changes everything. God bless and stay safe.

    • Ryaneli10 January 19, 2022, 1:29 am

What binary trigger doesn’t have a selector?

  • Kary Oldman January 18, 2022, 2:42 pm

To each their own, but why other than a range toy?

Most of us struggle with being good/getting better with standard trigger systems, so why add a new one with potential legal consequences and no real self defense advantages?

  • Gary Johnston January 18, 2022, 2:25 pm

First, I question why they didn’t find someone with a brain to talk about the system? However, as interesting as it might be, I see no use for it other than a dangerous toy, and a weapon all drug gangs and those who want to destroy America will try to get their hand on. You’ll notice we didn’t get a look at the target, as even with the shoulder stock (which requires a permit), you can bet there’s nothing resembling a group!

  • Nomikes January 18, 2022, 1:56 pm

    Complete with inflatable ATF agent?

  • Todd January 18, 2022, 12:12 pm

    Great.

This will be as the bump-stock to the AR-15’s… for the Glock.

Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin when this is shot down for the idiotic and dangerous concept that it is.

    Todd.

    • toast January 18, 2022, 2:23 pm

bro you literally have no idea. these arent new. bump stocks are trash and should be thrown away regardless of law.

      • Ej harbet January 19, 2022, 3:57 pm

Don’t try reason with trolls or domestic enemies of the constitution. Neither works.

  • Walleye January 18, 2022, 11:11 am

You have to admire Franklin Armory’s gutsy, in-your-face innovation.

For too long the 2A community has been on the defensive politically speaking, and giving up ground to the antis.

So whether you like the binary trigger idea or not, we should support their creative thinking because their next invention might be something that you want or need. I don’t own a G17, but now have a reason to buy one.

Cheers, happy shooting & God Bless America!

  • david a larson January 18, 2022, 10:44 am

if you wanna “spray and pray”, run with the M16A1…..mine does 30 rounds in 2.8 seconds….nothing gives a harder woodie except maybe the M60 or Ma Deuce

    • jerry January 18, 2022, 3:48 pm

      An M16 costs $30,000.

  • Nik catello January 18, 2022, 10:33 am

do they have one for a glock 10 mil?

    • Ej harbet January 19, 2022, 3:59 pm

      No but good news!
They have one for the glock7
That’s a ceramic pistol that goes through x-rays and costs more than you make in a month. 😀

  • William R Ferguson January 18, 2022, 10:25 am

Are these components compatible with all calibers and the aftermarket Glock frames? Needing deep pockets to keep feeding this animal!

  • LJ January 18, 2022, 10:03 am

The dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. More fuel for the anti-gun crowd.

    • Jim January 18, 2022, 2:21 pm

I agree sometimes it seems like some of these companies are just trying to stir the pot. The anti-gunners would try to ban shotguns if thats all we had. So it really doesn’t matter if the pot is stirred.

    • Ian moone January 19, 2022, 2:32 am

Nope just one more thing for them to worry about and try to ban…I say keep adding to the pile. If we restrict ourselves because we are worried about what the anti gun crowd is going to cry about we would have any guns.

  • Pete Faz January 18, 2022, 9:19 am

The fascination some folks have with “mag dumps “amazes me

  • Cynical January 18, 2022, 8:55 am

Yup, the feds are gonna declare this a machinegun and try to confiscate any they sell. Glocks suck anyway. Ugly plastic junk with no active (user applied) safety features. A Glock is like carrying a 1911 with the the thumb safety off and the grip safety disabled. Five pounds of pressure on the trigger (intentional or not) and it’s going to fire.

    • jerry January 18, 2022, 3:54 pm

I love Glocks. Reliable. Accurate. Lightweight. A zillion accessories available. However, I would not carry one with a round in the chamber without a good, sturdy holster with at least level II retention. Stay safe, folks.

  • Grumpy Old Biker January 18, 2022, 8:49 am

If you want one, get it quick and buy it under an assumed name. I’ll bet good money ATF will declare this a machinegun in no time. The legal definition of a machinegun is: capable of firing more than one round with a single pull of the trigger. Technically this fires two: one on the pull and one on the release. Besides, ammunition is hard enough to find as it is. With this thing you’d be going through twice as much.

    • Kevin January 18, 2022, 4:32 pm

I believe the ATF’s description of a machinegun reads “with a single function of the trigger”. The pull of the trigger would be one function, the release would be a second function of the trigger.

      • Grumpy Old Biker January 21, 2022, 6:50 am

Very interesting take on that, Kevin, and you’re right about the use of the word “function” as opposed to “pull” (my bad) in the federal legal definition of a machinegun. Whether a trigger pull and the ensuing release are two separate functions is open to interpretation, and I’ll go with yours. But guess which way ATF is gonna go. Feds are nothing if not consistently oppressive.

  • Rick January 18, 2022, 8:26 am

    A) As the 18 was made before 1986, it already _is_ “civilian legal”.
    B) Like the bump-type stocks, it’s a range toy.
    C) It’s a pricey range toy.
    D) As noted above, the BATFE (and really big fires) is sure to disapprove and promulgate a rule against them.

    Thanks, but no thanks.

  • Slim January 18, 2022, 7:48 am

The cops and gun haters sure are going to love this! I’ve never ever been a fan of binary triggers but in this application I can see the benefits for double taps(sort of)or just faster shots on target. Sadly I’ll bet these won’t ever really see the market since one they have zero to sell and by the time they do and sell some they’ll be shut down since here’s a real fact, so many more people are killed by pistols than any other guns made! Everyone cries about AR’s and yet they have clearly no statics since it’s simply easier to conceal a pistol than it is a long gun and very easy to hide as well after a crime. But yet people are still pushing for bans. This is surely a bad thing for people like me that all I’d ever carry is a GLOCK and for sure this exact gun will be the cause for stronger restrictions which to start will be mag capacities for those of us who already haven’t been screwed.

  • Jesse Hobson Scott January 18, 2022, 7:18 am

Rocks! Bummer we cannot legally by them in Florida.

    • JTH2 January 18, 2022, 7:56 am

Ok… so call me ignorant… how does Florida deem this illegal?

      • Rottifan January 18, 2022, 8:25 am

You can’t make any modifications that alter the rate of fore in FL….Rick Scott signed it into law after the Parkland school shooting.

      • Randy D January 18, 2022, 8:30 am

Two words – RICK SCOTT – RHINO POS!

      • Slim January 18, 2022, 8:31 am

Not logic based of course! A few years back they tried to ban all kinds of things like AR’s, high cap mags, etcetera. Luckily those two things didn’t pass but when they through it all at the wall some shit stuck one of which is binary triggers. Basically as it’s written ANY trigger that makes the gun faster has been banned in Florida for a few years(yet rare breeds are still legal as they ARE full auto since it operates JUST AS FAST as full auto since it works JUST LIKE an auto sear set up by the carrier the second it’s in battery trips the “forced reset” which IS just a forced auto sear trigger in reality. Sure it’s faster so shouldn’t it be illegal? Yeah, but not yet. Also what about people who can shoot super fast with the junkiest trigger and even faster with a good CMC or something?! Those all are fully legal but if you have one or shot one you’ll notice there is pretty much zero pre travel and same for over travel. I grew up in Cali and moved to redneck Florida in 8th grade and could grasp the crap the teachers were teaching all of which I was zero BS learned by myself and all Cali students in 1-3! So same crap they were teaching me here in 8th grade I had already learned in 1-3 grade which shows how ignorant and literally back woods these people truly are. Like I said, no logic!

        • jerry January 18, 2022, 4:00 pm

Maybe the Florida teachers spend a little time teaching kids to be nice and polite!

        • Lying Bastard January 19, 2022, 7:57 am

So Jerry Miculek’s finger is banned from FL?

  • Terry Gressner January 18, 2022, 6:10 am

Say goodbye to all fast triggers. Making a trigger kit for the most sought after pistol G17, by gangs will end these triggers for AR platforms also.

  • Rj January 18, 2022, 5:50 am

Couple hundred and couple hundred more is less than half of the product price. 🤷‍♂️Not sure most are willing to pay another $500

  • Steve bernardo January 18, 2022, 5:24 am

Instead of seeing how quick he could empty a magazine… He could have gone slower on a few rounds to really show the binary part and how it fires. Its doubtful I will spend $899 for the luxury of my Glocks shooting like. that

    • Grumpy Old Biker January 21, 2022, 6:53 am

The outlandish purchase price is only the beginning. Then you’d have to start buying ammo at a vastly increased rate. If you can find it.
