All Your Wildest Dreams Have Come True: HK's SP5 - SHOT Show 2020
This is H&K’s semi-auto version of the venerable MP5.

The HK MP5 is one of the most iconic guns of the last 50 years, and now you can enjoy a genuine Heckler & Koch-made semi-automatic version: The SP5 is finally here. True Pearce spoke with H&K about it at the range at SHOT Show 2020.

This is about as close to an authentic MP5 many people will get in a generation. Manufactured by HK in Germany, the SP5 has all of the look, feel and controls of an MP5 in a consumer-friendly commercial version.

There have been many attempts by a string of companies to bring a semi-automatic version of the MP5 to the American market including Heckler & Koch, but everything from questionable manufacturing overseas to deliberate action by U.S. officials has largely prevented this product from making a strong showing outside of movies, TV shows, and video games.

All Your Wildest Dreams Have Come True: HK's SP5 - SHOT Show 2020

While it still has a couple of small, but telltale signs of being a civilian-oriented pistol, the SP5 is, for all intents and purposes, the most real version of a semi-auto MP5.

The main thing about the SP5 is that it’s made by HK, the original supplier of the MP5, and not a licensed replica or post-patent clone or knockoff. The receiver and grip module are slightly altered to make them incompatible with full-auto components, but unlike early HK semi-autos, have ambidextrous controls including the paddle magazine release.

Another small change is that the SP5 comes with a pistol rear sight turret, not a submachine gun sight. It is compatible with factory and standard aftermarket rear sights, though. Also, the SP5 comes with a modified 3-lug suppressor mount with 1/2-28 threads under a knurled thread protector.

Specs

  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Length: 17.8″
  • Height: 8.66″
  • Barrel: 8.86″
  • Weight: 5.1lb
  • Magazine: 30rnd – 6.3oz / 10rnd – 3.5oz
  • Magazine Capacity: 30rnd, 15rnd, 10rnd
  • Trigger: 6.74 – 10.11 lbs
  • Trigger travel: .24″
  • Trigger return: .12″
  • Barrel profile: 6 grooves, right-hand twist

The SP5 comes with a single point sling end cap and not a stock or pistol brace. While it seems like for now, HK isn’t interested in offering the SP5 with a brace or a stock sold separately, there is tons of aftermarket support already in place for people looking to install either, all NFA rules withstanding.

There is one catch. The SP5 is no budget range toy. Sure, it’s built to the same time-tested standard as the iconic MP5 and it will take a beating, but that doesn’t mean the SP5 is a cheap gun.

The suggested retail price for the SP5, with two 10- or 30-round factory magazines, a sight tool, a sling, and a carrying case is $2,799. While oftentimes pricing online and in stores is less, this is an authentic HK product and it will be in huge demand, especially at first, and prices are sure to be all over the map.

That is to say, if you see an SP5 available for sale, it’s probably going to sell to someone, and if you want one you’ll have to pay up. In time, when some of the new hotness of the SP5 wears off, better deals may be found, but at least for now, expect prices to remain high.

Additional 10-, 15- and 30-round magazines carry an $80 sticker price. The good news is that there’s a strong aftermarket for magazines, too.

So if you’ve been asking for a commercially available MP5 from HK, well, they listened. For more details and information visit the Heckler & Koch website.

There are those that say ” H&K, way to much money”. Well, precision weapons are not cheap to build and H&K and its owners are a breed apart. We will spend the extra for an item that will last and perform. Bottom line, I own allot of nice arms like SIG, S&W, CZ, Mossberg, PTR, Colt, Tommy Built Tactical, etc. but H&K is by far WORTH EVERY PENNY, especially when you can afford to own registered sears!!!! Bring on the SP5 to add to my SP5K. Also, many dealers will sell them for $500 off MSRP. H&K wants to sell them and wants to slow the roll from PTR, Zenith, POF etc. The G36 will be next, they already sell a commercial version for euro market. And if you want a real UMP purchase the H&K USC and convert it to a UMP through Tommy Built Tactical. Stay tuned H&K is going to finally take care of its civilian market in the USA. Its about time I say.

As a retired federal officer my wildest dreams will come true when they offer it in the epitome of the MP series, the 10mm….

I for some reason like things that we are told we can’t own… what’s wrong with me? Like my three year old told her mom when she wouldn’t let her out the door.. “mommy, you can keep me from going out but you can’t keep me from wanting to go out; you can’t control my mind”… I just shuddered and pinched myself at the old soul in this young body…

As someone pointed out, a Glock 17 or 19 with a 33 round magazine is much cheaper, concealable, and portable, and does the same thing. With an “arm brace”, the H&K would really be cool. If I could afford one,
I’d still buy something else instead, but the more guns out there, the harder it will be for the communists to
take them away. I suspect that the clientele who purchase H&K firearms are the type who have more political
connections and influence than, say, the constituency for Jimenez Arms.

If you don’t have the money, never have had the money, and never will have it ($3000), then you’ll never have one but if you have the money ($500), or can borrow it somewhere, you could still have an AR copy. Big difference.

37 years ago I got to fire the military version suppressed at a kasern in Germany. Really liked it. Then I picked up my issue M3 and trudged back to my unit in the woods. This civvie model is cool but I really dont need it- it would just sit in the safe most of the time.

  • Matt January 28, 2020, 7:40 am

I get the appeal if you just have to have the HK brand. But my 9mm AR will do exactly the same thing at about 1/3 of the cost. And the parts are readily upgraded if I want to trick it out.

To the guy above trying to TAKE AWAY our 2nd amendment…..

When you say “Grab a Egyptian Hakim and do some real damage”, is that something you’ve thought about doing????
Sounds like you have a plan….. maybe someone should RED FLAG you for your comments….

    • Rex January 28, 2020, 10:00 am

You’re entitled to your spinless opinion. I’ll leave it at that.

  • okeedokee January 28, 2020, 6:19 am

I could build one helluva AR pistol for $2799…

  • Rick January 28, 2020, 5:44 am

Terrific!! Now knock $1000 off the price and we’ll talk. PTRs and Zeniths are $1500 to $1800. Love HK stuff but ridiculously overpriced!! For that kind of cash, you can get a modern B&T APC9!!
Sad part is there are people out there who will pay that because of what it reads on the receiver.

  • Mike Cornett January 28, 2020, 5:28 am

I don’t think our guns will ever be taken away, but when you produce guns like this, it makes for a real up hill battle. Canada has already stopped the selling of Military type firearms. This could happen to us. The Gov will just make some guns illegal….or will require a special license…Like Class II Full Auto are today. This will still keep the secondment amendment in tact….When you flash around guns like this…You are hurting our stand.
Don’t you get it..?…When you poke a hornets nest, you might get stung. I hope you understand my position. I want to keep my Collection of Vintage Military Firearms…..In total, I have 48 and counting. And a few modern guns that I shoot on occasion….Home protection 9mm. A 380 mini carry. 12 ga Skeet Shotgun. A 22 plunker.
Lets keep our guns…….Don’t cut us off at the knees. …..Who needs a damn firearm like this anyway. Buy a Egyptian Hakim and do some real damage, if that’s what you want……Always remember….SAFETY FIRST

      You Fudd

    • Schildgen January 28, 2020, 7:04 am

I want one, and an HK grenade-launcher, that will really make you wet your pants.

    • Notsure January 28, 2020, 7:29 am

I can’t describe how much I DESPISE fools like yourself on this forum and continue to be afforded the privilege of posting here.

    • Brad Q. January 28, 2020, 7:39 am

This is the type of thinking that allows anti-gun and gun control groips to push through their bills. BTW, it is not a Class Ii, they are NFA firearms and suppressors. Using the thinking of “Who needs a **** firearm like this anyway?” is what they want. You cannot seem to understand that semi-auto is semi-auto, whether it is made of wood and steel, polymer and steel, or just all metal, it is still semi auto. What makes this “more dangerous” than a Glock with a 33 rnd magazine? Not much, except the Glock is easier to conceal, and can be manipulated faster. Just because you don’t see the need for it, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have it. That is just as bad as their logic. If you want it, you want it, I can go either way on buying one. Why do you need a Corvette or Explorer, when you can use a Prius? The analogy is the same (and the excuse it wasn’t designed to kill, is not valid and has been explained).

      Just my .02

    • Tim January 28, 2020, 8:35 am

Mr. Cornett, While I would never own one of these HK pistols, because I have zero use for one. I would not begrudge the people that do. Who are you to decide what people should own. Just because you or I don’t have a use for one of these doesn’t mean others won’t. Your idea that if I dont stir the pot they will leave me and my stuff alone is deeply flawed. They won’t. History has proven that time and time again. Your way of thinking reminds me of a person during WWII that would turn in his Jewish neighbors in order to gain favor with the ruling class. Your idea of tossing other gun owners under the bus to save yourself is embarrassing and makes me think you could be a person of very little honor.

      • Ej harbet January 29, 2020, 9:48 pm

        I admire your eloquence sir.

    • Big Al 45 January 28, 2020, 8:59 am

Aaand ANOTHER silly boy speaks out on that which he has no clue about.
No, I DO NOT understand your ‘position”, kowtowing is EXACTLY what they want, First these guns, then ALL ‘semi autos’ (why do you “need” all that firepower), then the rest.
They have ONLY made it clear a million times, they want NO GUNS, PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • JoshO January 28, 2020, 9:27 am

Hey, bootlicker, if you want to keep your guns then simply don’t comply. And when you hear the shooting start, don’t be a lilbitch and pick up one of your rifles and fight for your rights.

But don’t lecture us about what kind of guns we should think are ok because of liberal feels. Suckit.

    • Ti January 28, 2020, 12:16 pm

That’s really disconnected. And bragging about having firearms during the tirade. Get some help.

    • Charlie BROWN January 28, 2020, 5:01 pm

Mike, the only reason I would not buy an HK is the price and I don’t need it. If you have not figured out by now the Gov. wants all of your guns. They can’t get on with their NWO while the public is still armed. If your not ready to take a stand, maybe you should give your guns to some one that may be poor ,but willing to make a stand for the Constitution. I don’t want something like that to happen, but it’s happening now. Virginia, just last week, remember.

  • Brandon P Foytik January 28, 2020, 3:53 am

    Love the weapon and brand

    • John hancock January 28, 2020, 6:54 am

      To mrs cornette above…..

WTF ARE YOU BRAIN DAMAGED OR SOMETHING???? OR JUST THE TYPICAL FUDD?????
NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR YOUR SHILLING FOR THE GOVERNMENT…..
LET ME GUESS, IN REALITY YOU’RE ONE OF THOSE PIGS THAT THINKS ONLY THEY SHOULD HAVE GUNS….. YEAH I’M SURE THAT’S WHAT YOU ARE…. NO TRUE AMERICAN THINKS LIKE YOU….. SO YOU CAN KEEP RUNNING YOUR MOUTH (1ST AMENDMENT), BUT WHEN YOUR FILTHY MOUTH STARTS SPOUTING BS THAT INFRINGES ON THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS, YOU BECOME THE ENEMY…..JS

    • Ti January 28, 2020, 12:21 pm
