Indiana Woman Fatally Shoots Intruder Pretending to Be A Cop

Defensive Use of Firearms S.H. Blannelberry This Week

An alleged robber died from a gunshot wound last week after forcing his way into the home of a responsibly armed woman.

Police told local media that the suspect, who has been identified as 40-year-old Jeffery Flowers, was pretending to be a cop at the time of the invasion.

“Neighbors had videos of him parking in front of the residence and looking through windows, ultimately breaking through the door and pulling a weapon out,” Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings told Fox59.

“There was audio, and you could hear what he was saying inside. He said, ‘It’s the police.’ He was claiming to be police officer, but he had a mask on,” Cummings added.

The victim, who has not been identified, did not fall for that trick.  She retrieved a firearm, shot Flowers, then exited the residence to phone the police from a neighbor’s house.

Cummings indicated that he was not surprised by the outcome.

“In your home is probably the most protected place you can be,” explained Cummings. “If you’re breaking into someone’s home in the middle of the night, if you don’t get shot or killed you should feel fortunate.”

While an investigation is ongoing, local attorney Mario Massillamany does not believe any charges will be filed because of Indiana’s robust self-defense laws.

“Inside a person’s house they can use deadly force, and that’s called the castle doctrine,” said Massillamany.

“The castle doctrine in Indiana is a pretty strong law. You do not have a duty to retreat,” he continued.

Last year, armed citizens killed more criminals during the commission of a felony than police, per data published in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report.

Alan Gottlieb, Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, recently spoke about this trend.

“We looked at Tables 14 and 15 in the FBI’s new report that apply to justifiable homicides by law enforcement and private citizens, respectively,” noted CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Last year, according to the data, armed citizens killed 343 criminals during the commission of a felony while police fatally shot 298 felons.

“If the FBI data published in their crime report for 2020 is accurate,” he continued, “it is ample evidence that the individual right to keep and bear arms for personal defense is as important today as it was when the Second Amendment was adopted as a cornerstone of the Bill of Rights.”
