Ithaca 37 Trench Shotgun w/Bayonet From Inland + Threaded M1 Carbines & SBR Pistols – SHOT Show 2016

Authors Historical Guns Sam Trisler SHOT Show 2016

Let me just get this out of the way, I love M1 Carbines. I have a thing for old military weapons and the little-carbine-that-could is very close to the top of my all time favorite list. It is light, compact, fast and packs about the same power as a .357.  Is it a long range gun? or is it a sub gun? No, and it never claimed to be either of those.

But this is not an article about what the M1 Carbine is or isn’t. Inland Manufacturing is now shipping their new M1 Carbines and they have some exciting new models that fit a lot of bills.

The Inland Advisor.

The Inland Advisor.

So Inland is making some very basic, GI-issue-style carbines. They have full-stocked ones with or without the bayonet lug/band and a folding stock Paratrooper style one as well.  But they are also making some others.

The “Advisor” model is a pistol version of the M1 Carbine and was a stand out at SHOT Show.  The Advisor name comes from the use of cut down carbines by some of the US advisors to the South Vietnamese during the Vietnam war. The Advisor sports a 12″ barrel, paratrooper stock with the wire folding piece removed and a conical flash hider.  One of the ideas is that you can buy the pistol, get a stamp then put the separately sold wire stock on it to have an SBR.

The Advisor has an MSRP of  $1,239 and will be shipping in March.

Advisor Specs:

  • Caliber: .30 Carbine
  • Weight: 4.5 pounds
  • Barrel: 12 inches (including flash hider)
  • Overall length: 21 inches
  • Stock: American Walnut
  • Capacity: 15 rounds (as sold)
  • Accessories: Military-style sling and one 15-round magazine
  • MSRP: $1,239

But carbines are not the only thing that Inland is working on.  They are making a slick looking version of the M37 Trench Gun too. This is built off of a newly manufactured Ithaca receiver. It sports a 20″ barrel, 3″ inch 12 gauge chamber, metal heat shield and bayonet lug.

Inland will offer a reproduction bayonet for the M37 at some point in the near future.  This Ithaca will not slam fire but we were told that parts to make it have that function, like the originals did, will be available too. Speaking of being available, we’re awaiting word on when the Ithaca M37 will hit the market, as well as how much this historical scattergun will cost.

We are looking forward to getting some of these guns in soon for a full review.

No, you are the one who is wrong. You need to control your mouth and act like an adult. We don’t need “lighten up” we need self discipline.

I thought the M37 story was great except for that low-brow comment. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I wouldn’t speak that way in front of a woman or a child so I wouldn’t write that way either. I’d expect a metaphor like that from an old drill sergeant, and in the context of training it would not be out of place, but back in the day a lot of those tough old fighting NCOs weren’t particularly well educated either and they weren’t talking to women and kids. They were just trying to train our soldiers as best they could. Please maintain the dignity of this good blog and take the high road always. If I ever heard my son say that, I would not tolerate it. There’s no reason to be rude or crude.

    • Joe Morris March 20, 2018, 7:34 pm

Frank Jarden, Are you talking about the reference to defecating? Lighten up and give him some credit; he didn’t say “Shit.”

    • Grampy Tom June 1, 2018, 6:39 am

Frank, you are intolerant blue-nose. Who gives a damn how YOU talk in front of women and children. You want to keep your second ammendment rights? Don’t impose your holier-than-thou phony morality on anyone else’s first ammendment rights. Even small criticisms, like yours, are used by our liberal enemies against us. It is the same as all the gun industry marketing “brains” that think up the scariest names for guns, ammo and accessories giving our liberal enemies ammo to use against us in their communications with the sheeple. While it is your right to say it, it is my right to tell you it lowers the value of your message.

I think the biggest joke is that the new Inland Carbine is made of junk castings but still costs so much you may as well go out and buy a quality original that is at least a good investment. I could see buying it if the price was reasonable but these repo companies think that the consumer has an unlimited bank account and is stupid enough to pay sometimes more for repo junk than an original collectors item. What a joke.

Dear Gunsamerica censor. I just posted a heartfelt and honest opinion on this site, and you are going to edit it? No profanity or dirty (low brow) language was used.. If you pulled it, maybe you PC Wimps need to get a life also!!!

    • Grampy Tom June 1, 2018, 6:46 am

Bob, they pull that crap all the time. If they don’t like your comment, it won’t make it. Very sensative people in charge here! This will probably not make it. I know my earlier response won’t. Mine never get through, either.

Like the Ithaca Trench Gun, but how ’bout they extend the magazine a shell, or so? I know the bayonet grip is in the way, and would need to extend mag/barrel attachment point, but when your in the trenches it would be nice to have all the firepower available to the design.

    • Dave Hicks January 27, 2016, 10:21 pm

Just a teaser ? More information and pictures needed.I’m a left handed shooter so I’m interested.

  • js January 27, 2016, 12:40 pm

The prices for these new batch of repro’s are just too darned high for the average consumer. Inland is killing it’s market with overpriced guns…..Ithaca Trench gun, M1 repro’s….etc…

  • JerryWL January 27, 2016, 12:29 pm

Since Ithaca’s Home Defense model with a 20″ barrel and wood stock lists for $970 I would imagine that Inland’s would be well North of $1,000. One wonders if they will make a kit available to retro fit your existing Ithaca.

  • Bob January 27, 2016, 12:02 pm

During my 34 year police career we carried the Ithaca shotgun. Never had an issue and very reliable. Late in my career, the Department switched to the Remington 870, which was also a great shotgun.

I have an Auto-Ordinance M-1 30 Carbine. The first time at the range I had magazine feeding problems. I finally figured out that the most reliable magazine was the one’s made by Auto-Ordinance. The other after market once kept failing. Other than that, a great rifle!

    • SmokeHillFarm January 27, 2016, 5:48 pm

I fell in love with the M1 carbine when I was first issued one in the Army, about the same time we changed over from serial numbers to using the Social Security Numbers — maybe 1965 or ’66? It may not be as good an infantry tool as the M-14’s we trained on, but I sure liked the little carbine and when I retired in ’85 and got my FFL, the carbine was at the top of my list. A few years later they were down to $139 from Southern Ohio Guns, so I got three and have never regretted it.

I have had very few feed problems with the carbines, and usually only with the larger banana mags — but I am very careful to seat the mags solidly, which is (or so they told us in the Army) the source of the feed problems, when the magazine is either a bit cockeyed in the well, or not securely seated. We were taught to insert the magazine, then give it a bit of a thump with the palm of your hand to make sure it’s well seated, and — in the case of the 30-round banana clips (inaccurate, but that’s what we called them), wiggle it forward & backward to get it in a “middle position.”

On the 30-round magazines, we were told that on these older carbines (ours were mostly WW2 vintage), the magazine well (and perhaps the magazine) gets a bit worn and sloppy, to where it’s possible to have it tilted either too much forward or too much backward, thus interfering with proper feed. Generally it was only on the first round (or so we were told). One solution I heard about, but never tried myself, was tightening up the magazine well with a few pieces of Scotch tape front & back. Seems like it might work, though I’m guessing that you’d have to layer it so that the tape thickness closest to the ground was thicker than the upper part. Might take a bit of experimentation to find the right combination of pieces of tape, but if feeding is a real problem that might be a solution. I’ve been lucky on my old (VERY old) carbines that thumping the mag and centering it seems to largely eliminate the problem. Actually, I don’t think I have ever had a single problem with the little 15-round magazines.

Hope this helps those who have carbine feed issues. My range guys at Ft Ord and Fort Lewis seemed to have a good grasp of the problems. My experience with my old surplus carbines (I think they came back from either Israel or South Korea) has been very good, but part of that may be because I bought new-old surplus magazines still in the brown US gov’t issue paper wrappings, so theoretically my only “wear” problem would be in the carbine itself.

  • Fred January 27, 2016, 10:16 am

I hope the “trench gun” isn’t too stupid expensive. The real ones, if you can find one, are real pricey and it’s hard to tell if it’s real or fake.As for the carbines- I lucked out a few years ago and bought a couple from CMP.

    • Ken January 27, 2016, 11:09 am

Well, abandon that hope because they are. $1,200, according to the video above. That’s simply ridiculous.

    • DR_T January 27, 2016, 4:33 pm

Paid less than half that amount for my WW II Winchester built M1 Carb. What !!!

      • SmokeHillFarm January 27, 2016, 6:14 pm

Gun prices are getting really ridiculous. I bought my three carbines (all WW2 surplus that we sent to Israel & S. Korea, then were sold in bulk back to US distributors) back in the early 90s, IIRC, with my FFL. The first one was $179 wholesale and then when the price dropped to $139 or $149 I bought two more for the wife & son. I think they were retailing locally for $199. I mean, these were 50-year-old surplus guns! I can see why newly-manufactured ones command stiff prices since manufacturing nowadays is not cheap, but the prices on the old surplus carbines has been driven to astronomical levels, esp. considering they are now 70+ years old.

As much I love the M1 carbines, I don’t think I could bring myself to lay out the money they are charging these days.

    • Dave Hicks January 27, 2016, 10:26 pm

Look for the US stamp or the Flaming Bomb or a DOD stamp. You can check the serial number.

  • chris January 27, 2016, 9:16 am

As to the operation of the Ithica, you shouldn’t put in your mouth what you wouldn’t hold in your hand…
Those sort of comments would probably best be reserved for the range when you’re surrounded by shooting buddies who appreciate that sort of thing.

  • bill January 27, 2016, 8:40 am

I would be in on that shotgun providing, chromed bore and choke tubes. So it can serve double duty. May as well improve things as long as they are doing it anyway. Already have a toad sticker that will fit it.

    • D C May 28, 2016, 5:32 pm

You may be surprised I have the inland 37 .And have tried two 1917 period US bayonets. Both did not lockup.I think they are stretching the truth about being the same as the original.Must be a patent infringement on the bayonet lug. so I altered the knife at the latch 1/16 in.knife locked up perfect.some cold blue on bayonet Works and looks great. Hope this helps if anyone else runs into this problem.

      • larry yannachione March 9, 2017, 6:40 am

you claim that your 2 1917 bayonets didn’t lock up. where they original, and was the m37 a inland? I am considering a purchase from inland, a Ithaca home defense goes for 9+ so a few bucks more a you get all the bells. I would like to know if I am gonna have issues with the bayonet attachment.

  • AT January 27, 2016, 7:20 am

    “Feeds and extracts”, please…

    • Don January 27, 2016, 10:22 am

You know – I have to agree – there is truly no reason for expletives in a review or description of a weapon. How about behave like professionals – the liberals already view collectors and enthusiasts as nut jobs – maybe approach the subject objectively and with language that is acceptable to everyone. I’m also glad to see I wasn’t the only one that thought that was unprofessional…

      • Bob January 27, 2016, 12:49 pm

YOU BUNCH OF POLITICALLY CORRECT WIENIES ARE PATHETIC. YOU ARE ALL CONCERNED WHAT THE LIBERALS MIGHT THINK WHEN THEY SEE SOMETHING A LITTLE “OFF COLOR” WHEN IT INVOLVES THE FIREARMS INDUSTRY. HOW CONCERNED ARE YOU ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO OUR CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOLS, THE GARBAGE THAT’S CALLED ENTERTAINMENT ON TV AND THE INTERNET, ETC, ETC. ALL THAT’S O.K.. BUT ONE FOUR LETTER OFF COLOR WORD, INVOLVING THE GUN INDUSTRY, GETS YOUR UNDIES TIED IN A KNOT. HOW ABOUT INGESTS AND DEFECATES? DOES THAT SOOTHE YOUR DELICATE SENSIBILITIES? GET A LIFE, YOU DOLTS!!

        • arnold January 27, 2016, 1:41 pm

How about “loads” and “ejects” which is actually what it does? Never see a gun “shit” or even heard that term before to describe ejection of a spent shell. For what it is worth, I am a baptist minister, and for 40+ years have been a gun owner and shooter. My young grandson has inherited my love for guns and shooting as well. He reads these articles as well. Why does he have to read vulgar references that are thrown in apparently for toilet humor or some juvenile sense of sounding cool? Gun ownership covers a wide array of owners, why the stupid childish write up. Sooner or later all gun owners must learn we need ever shooter we got to be united. Why insult anyone of us? The Supreme Court decision of Hellier was 5 to 4, with 4 justices voting that the Constitution DOES NOT give an individual right to gun ownership. The Supreme Court is only ONE VOTE away from turning the dogs loose on gun owners. The next President, if a Democrat will supply that justice I believe. My advice to you is grow up, and get you head out of you bottom ejector system and stop attacking fellow gun owners. We have a lot to lose and we are only one vote away. BTW, I have an Itacha with 8 shot 18 inch barrel I purchased through a police supply when I was a young prosecutor in 1974. Great gun.

          • Petey Raymond January 27, 2016, 8:57 pm

There exists a very real possibility that if a Democrat is elected as the next president, vacancies on the Supreme Court would be filled with left-wing justices that would bring down the 2nd Amendment. With that, I agree. So let me get this straight, Rev.: Our gun rights could go down the crapper and you’re worried that your young grandson might see the word “shit” in a gun article? Get your ever-loving head out of your rectum and take a good hard look at your sanctimonious self. If you did, you would see that you looked exactly like one of the politically correct left-wingers that demand a free speech “safe zone” to protect their precious little offspring from any innocuous uttering that offends their innocent virgin minds. By the way, don’t ever take your grandson to a farm. The poor innocent kid would probably have a nervous breakdown if he ever saw any livestock copulating. You may have been a prosecutor at one point in your life, but that was probably before you became a disciple of the military veteran-hating crowd at Westboro Baptist church.

        • D C May 28, 2016, 5:35 pm

You have it right. Call a spade a spade.

      • Petey Raymond January 27, 2016, 12:49 pm

Don, I disagree with you completely. Because the liberals and left-wingers already view collectors and enthusiasts as nut jobs, there will NEVER EVER be language that is acceptable to everyone, and especially the liberal left. You could speak with the language, syntax, and sentence structure of a socialist Harvard English professor and you’d still be thought of as a psycho, child-killing gun worshiper. Besides, we’re not talking about the “F” word and its variants, or sexual activities or reproductive body parts. This was Sam Trisler using plain and simple bathroom humor, and I thought it was funny. And a bit creative. Get off your high horse. Also, regarding Matt Swenson’s comment below about “low brow trailer trash”: The 2nd amendment is entirely about the overthrow of a tyrannical government. In such a situation, your so-called “trailer trash” will be fighting elbow-to-elbow with all of the upper-class “gentrified patriots” like yourself, and you’ll be thanking God that they’re there. Lighten up. Don’t be so freakin’ touchy. (Oops, sorry. Don’t be so gosh darn adamant in your revulsion.)

    • Matt Swenson January 27, 2016, 10:56 am

Exactly, get sick of reading stuff that makes the low brow trailer trash label the liberals ascribe to us seem justified. No need for that in an article of this type.

  • Mark N. January 27, 2016, 1:29 am

Does anyone have any experience with the carbines from Inland? Obviously there are the originals, but that is a hit and miss proposition, the Auto Ordnance have a bad reputation with respect to the magazine issues, and the Century’s are unreliable. The only other I know of is Franklin, and those go for about $500 more than the Inlands. I am interested as it is probable that a bill will be passed in the California Legislature this session (there are three pending) which may ban purchases and sales of almost all semiautomatic rifles after the first of next year, and no one knows if Brown will sign or veto. Since I’ve always wanted an M1 Carbine, it is time to act before it is too late.

    • Sam Trisler January 27, 2016, 8:06 am

Mark, I have handled the Inlands a couple of times at different shows but have yet to shoot one. They only started shipping a few months ago so there isn’t a whole lot of feedback out there on how they function. They do feel nice. I totally agree on the Auto Ordnance ones, I reviewed about 4-5 years ago that was awful. Finding a nice original is still an option but the prices are going up. I do have a lot of experience with one from Fulton Armory. The Fultons are pricey, but they are very well built and to GI specs. Inland has promised us a Carbine sometime in the near future so keep your eye out for a full review.
