Overview

High Standard/Interarms/ATM has been in the Kalashnikov game for about 20 years and they certainly know their stuff.

Currently, they are building on the Hungarian-pattern AKs, though they have used many others in the past.

It’s great to see a company like this keeping up the QC on imports, ensuring the customer gets the highest quality rifle available.

Impression

Several of the AK models we looked at during SHOT show were underfolders, probably my favorite style. Not so much because the folding stock adds to versatility, though it does. I just like the way they look when compared to fixed stock AKs.

High Standard features several color options, not something you see very often in the AK market.  On that note, the Olive Drab and wood stock option is quite striking.

All their AKs come with a heavy layer of parkerization. This really improves corrosion resistance, which helps address one of the Kalashnikov’s greatest deficiencies.

Pretty much every AK I ever came across in the sandbox was rusty somewhere and, let’s face it, Iraq/Afghanistan weren’t exactly high humidity environments. Not a lot of work typically goes into the AK finish, I don’t care what country they’re built it. So kudos to High Standard for raising the bar on that front.  In fact, they also have a finish upgrade called the KG Gun Cote, which is an advanced gun coating that increases lubricity on moving parts and offers corrosion, impact, and scratch resistance.

These guys also add in American-made parts wherever they can, which is almost always an improvement. The triggers in these AKs are made in Texas, what else can you ask for?

Price and Availability

The underfolders start at $719.99 with the basic finish. Typically, to upgrade to the KG Gun Cote it costs an additional $239.99.  But the guys at Interarms were nice enough to offer that KG Gun Cote to the GunsAmerica readers for $140.  Just make sure that you tell them we sent you.  Also, the offer is only good for the next three months.

American-made AKs are not military spec. They are suburban hobby rifles.
