It is the oldest mistake in Congress. “We must do something!” It’s a classic error of logic known as appelare desperadi, the appeal to desperation. It inevitably leads to disaster.

You must do the right thing, not just anything. This requires thought, reason, facts and a solid plan. If you’re stranded in a lifeboat and all you have is a drill, you don’t start drilling holes. You turn the drill into a motor and get yourself to shore.

We have had background checks for decades—experts report these have done nothing to affect the recent spate of crazed mass murderers. They also have no effect on deranged children seeking to murder their classmates. Proposed expanded checks, if you read them, will impose costs and delays on innocent people but have zero effect on 300 million guns out there—or psychos being motivated by the promise of fame conferred by incessant mass-murder promotion on the so-called ”news.”

The new noise about “red-flag laws” obscures the fact that police already have the tools to control true threats. Seriously dangerous “red flag” people can be locked up right now, and you know the mass murderers have been repeatedly flagged, then ignored by authorities who face no consequences. And the new laws are hopelessly flawed, missing the obvious: People too dangerous to keep their own guns are too dangerous to be left out on the street—with matches, vehicles, kitchen knives or even more guns easily bought from drug dealers… Why doesn’t the “news” media make this clear instead of pounding a drum?

The obvious unraveling of society we can all see—kids who want to mass murder their classmates, unhinged psychos shooting up stores and theaters, city-dwellers murdering their neighbors by the thousands in historically-black inner-city ghettos—the answer isn’t to outlaw guns owned by the innocent, or pass laws we already have that aren’t working.

Violating the Constitution by confiscating property people legally own (known as “infringement”), eliminating due process, encouraging citizens to become snitches with no repercussions for false, hoplophobic or malicious reports and turning police into warrantless nighttime invaders, these are not answers. This is like drilling holes in your lifeboat, and helping to sink America into a tyrannical socialist failure like so many others on history’s junkpile.

Fueled by media reports, anti-gun-rights groups have succeeded in convincing some fearful Americans that gun ownership literally “proves” a person must be crazy. Will simple gun possession become grounds for red-flagging neighbors?

Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership says start here:

1. Don’t Inspire Evil. Stop perpetual broadcasts and publication of mass murders, especially from the past. “Refrain from gratuitous or repetitious portrayal of mass murderers’ names and images.” The criminals want fame. Deny them their infamy.

“We must starve terrorists of the oxygen of publicity which they seek.”
— Margaret Thatcher

2. Teach students and the public about the righteous place the Second Amendment holds in American society. Firearms are crucial in the preservation of peace and freedom, creating a balance of power between government and the public it serves. Guns have social utility, saving lives, stopping crime and keeping you safe. Distorting these truths through emphasis and omission is a direct violation of the Associated Press Code of Ethics.

3. Encourage routine gun-safety training and marksmanship, so people young and old develop a proper respect for firearms, like Americans used to possess before this was banished from the public square and the current insanity took its place. If you own a gun and understand gun safety, take someone you know to the range, this week. That will do more to slow the barrage of misinformation spewing from TV and the media than anything else you can do. August is national shooting sports month, with range discounts galore—didn’t the media tell you? nssf.org

Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownershiphttps://www.jpfo.org is America’s most aggressive civil-rights organization, dedicated to destroying the notion of “gun control” as any kind of credible public-policy position. So-called “gun control” does not control guns and doesn’t control criminal behavior. What it does is disarm the innocent, leaving them helpless in the face of criminals, tyrannical governments and genocide. History repeatedly proves this fact. Founded in 1989 by Aaron Zelman as a response to the Holocaust, JPFO speaks with the moral authority and tenacious commitment of survivors of persecution, and knows that surrendering your personal and family safety to government protection courts disaster. “You don’t have to be Jewish to fight by our side, you just have to love liberty.”

A recently released mental patient shot a friend of mine and then fired several shots at me . This confirmed my opinion that disarming honest people is suicidal. He should have never Been released without constant supervision.

The problem is perception. The perception, not the reality, is that those of us that support the Second Amendment think that this should be the First Amendment, that there is nothing more sacred than gun ownership. Even God has to bow to our gun ownership as we “have the right” to take our gun into church. Now, we know this sin’t true for 99% of us. But the perception is that we are all like this.

The other perception is that we think there should be no limits, no restrictions, on gun ownership. This too is wrong, but that is the perception. The perception is that responsible gun owners are not willing to do anything, not EVEN the right thing. So of course, the understandable response, is that nothing gets done – hence the cry to “do something” We, the gun owners of America need to take back the initiative, take back the conversation in this country from the NRA. The NRA doesn’t represent gun owners, it represents the NRA. I do not know a single responsible gun owner who does not properly store his firearms. So lets start the discussion with public about that. Lets introduce legislation about responsible firearm storage. Then we can show we are willing to “do something”.

Lets take back the narrative. Let responsible gun owners take over the direction and conversation. Lets focus on gun safety. If we take control of the conversation away from the idiot politicians, we the people can make things happen.

I disagree with you on all accounts. What is truly needed is a paradigm shift from people thinking the only path to safety and well-being is by legislation. Safety is a matter of personal responsibility. Firearm storage laws are ridiculous. If a thief breaks in and steals a gun, then commits murder with it, that is the thief’s fault. If a child gets ahold of a gun that isn’t properly secured and hurts himself, that is the parents fault. Not mine or anybody else’s. I should not be liable for legal repercussions based on anybody else’s actions. If a mad man at Walmart opened fire while I was shopping with my family, we have a plan worked out that will be much more efficient than waiting for any government entity to do its thing. Do something? I have done, and continue to “do something” every day. I do not need anybody to do something for me.

I’ve read all the socialist liberal anti gun talking points , who hasn’t? They’re rammed down our throats daily. As usual , facts that counter the narrative are always left out. I’m a retired law enforcement, with 20 of those years i Major Crimes.
One liberal talking point is a home with firearms is more likely to suffer a fatality. More accurate would be a home with an automobile is more likely to suffer a fatality. Numerous homicides i worked were committed by objects other than a firearm, such as knives, blunt objects, axe, auto vehicles, hands and feet, etc.
skewed into the gun death myths is that suicides are included so as to appear in stats as if it was a homicide. Gang in gang violence is included as if it was part of the norm of gun ownership.
Check out the sentencing for violent offenders in places like chicago. I watched on TV as a 4 time repeat offender using a gun in a robbery, received an 8 year sentence by the liberal judge (which in reality equals 4 years with good behavior). He’ll be out soon to pickup where he left off.
Instead of penalizing honest people, why don’t these judges throw the book at the violators and lock them up for a long time? Because that doesn’t help their socialist cause, which is to disarm peaceful law abiding citizens. They need the negative gun stats.
Ask Venezuelans about their socialist leaders who took their firearms.
Vote out the judges! The average election has Only 9 to 11% turnout on voting days. The socialist are turning out. We need to do the same but better

AMEN. This is spot-on, and it’s a great idea to take a non-firearms-person to the range. Show them how much fun it is (and how safe, if you just follow a couple of simple safety rules).

BUT, one other point should be made. The comment is that we have laws that don’t work. They don’t work, because they aren’t used. How many prosecutions are there for violations of the gun laws every year? Very few. If the laws we have were enforced properly, there’d be less of a problem. But the government doesn’t have the courage to do anything; they just want to bleat about how bad things are and grab more power.

And we do need to reopen the mental health hospitals that were closed because the left wing got enamored with a book called “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and all of a sudden we had to “mainstream” people who were confined because for one reason or another, they were unable to deal with normal society. We are failing those people — we are leaving them to flounder, and in so doing promoting the violence that they often end up falling into.

There are over 22,000 laws on the books nationwide reference guns and crimes involving guns! This has nothing to do with crime, this is the communist ideological leaning. Democrats and RINOs wanting control of. the people of this country. They blame everything on an inanimate object, not the perpetrator using emotion!

  • SuperG August 20, 2019, 10:25 am

I feel that a few things have led to our violence. When Ronald Reagan relaxed the mental health laws of the nation, it dumped thousands of mentally ill onto the streets, who no longer got the supervision of their treatment that they needed. It also took away the money the states used to treat the mentally ill, and so they stopped doing it. They get them stabilized, then dump them right back onto the streets. Next comes the excusing parents from the responsibility of raising their kids. A kid left to run wild, will do just that, especially if the parents are not prosecuted for it. Lastly comes the medical community. Prescribing brain chemistry altering drugs to children with no direct supervision is a formula for disaster. It is a cause for alarm that all these shooters were on some kind of psychotropic drug before they ran amok. A huge number have run amok that you do not hear about, as they didn;t use a gun, so do not fit into the liberal narrative that tries to disarm us.

You’ve been indoctrinated there SuperG. Reagan signed a BIPARTISAN bill that was an extension of the Carter administration, and was obligated to do so as it passed with a LARGE majority.
The Left has been pushing this deceit for decades, that REAGAN closed Mental health facilities, when in fact it was CONGRESS that pushed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981, resulting in the STATES having to fund most of their own health care facilities, which most FAILED to do.
Reagan didn’t do jack crap except sign a Bill he was pressured to sign, due to it’s popularity with BOTH Party’s.
The STATES dumped people in the streets, NOT Reagan.
