Kansas Professor Pens Resignation Letter Over Campus Carry Law

Associate Prof. Jake Dorman. (Photo: CJOnline)

A University of Kansas professor resigned earlier this month ostensibly due to fear of the state’s new campus carry law, which is set to take effect at public universities on July 1.

Citing concerns about armed students discussing “sensitive and highly charged topics,” Associate Professor Jake Dorman published an op-ed in which he states that “Kansas can have great universities, or it can have concealed carry in classrooms, but it cannot have both.”

Kansas passed a law in 2013 that allowed anyone to carry a firearm in public buildings, but the law included a four-year exemption for universities. That exemption will expire on July 1, and Prof. Dorman doesn’t want to be around to see what happens.

In his column, Dorman chides his fellow Kansans for allowing campus carry, noting that in order for the state to run a “premier university” it must recruit professors from “coastal areas and progressive college towns where most people do not believe that randomly arming untrained students is a proper exercise of the Second Amendment’s protection of a well-regulated militia.”

He believes that allowing students to carry firearms into the classroom will have a “chilling effect on free speech” as heated arguments could “easily” become “lethal.”

Strangely, Dorman doesn’t mention the evidence and examples of violence and bloodshed in other states that have allowed students to carry concealed weapons on campus. That’s likely because remarkably few students have shot their classmates or professors in the “heated arguments” Dorman fears. Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Tennessee, and Texas have all passed campus carry bills, and thus far the shrill warnings of the anti-gun lobby haven’t come to fruition.

Dorman argues that “concealed carry has proven to be a failure,” noting that “campus shootings have become all too frequent, and arming students has done nothing to quell active shooter situations.” He avoids naming specific instances because, again, there aren’t any.

Campus shootings still occur, of course, but no statistics exist for active shooter scenarios that never happen. We don’t know how many students have reconsidered murderous actions for fear of facing down an armed student who refuses to be a victim. Furthermore, campus shootings don’t occur regularly enough (thank goodness) to allow many opportunities for armed, law-abiding students to stop them.

Of course, Dorman may be leaving the university for which he feels so much “affection” for an entirely unrelated reason. He didn’t known until this month that the campus carry bill would survive efforts to overturn it, and three weeks usually isn’t enough time to secure a position at another university. He may be doing nothing more than attempting to secure some good-old-fashioned PR and score brownie points with the anti-gun administration at his new university.

Whatever the reason, next semester Prof. Dorman will be happily teaching rooms full of students who, if an active shooter situation does occur, will have absolutely no ability to defend themselves.

He named one of the greatest problems on college campus now, universities have been recruiting from coastal areas and progressive schools. Look what they have done in producing sniveling snowflakes.

One less liberal douche indoctrinating our kids in un-American philosophy. Go to California if you want to spout your bull crap.

  • E.L Jones December 15, 2017, 9:16 pm

He is a liberal..he only wants attention and he never will leave over this issue–sexual abuse charges may be erupting yes which might force him out. Living with these blowbags for 50 years teaches me that they never follow through with their threats. Once his need to assuage his self hate subsides over his impotence in changing the world to suit his brain, he will move on to his next tirade. With the attention span of a goldfish, he will be over his “promise” tomorrow.

Liberals process thoughts differently (and incompletely!) and they choose to not help themselves as it is ALWAYS someone else beliefs which are at fault. Be not fooled. Liberal thought is stoked with logical fallacy and as soon as one of their attention needing construct falls in a debate they jump onto the next social outrage as not to face the rebuttal to their defective logic– lest their fragile psyche’s face the fact that they are the root of all the social problems they themselves rant about.

What a wonderful way to addresst the overwhelming liberal bias in the campus faculty echo chamber! Conservative professors have been a vanishing breed thanks to the prejudicial and biased faculty selection process. Now fewer hoplophobic lefties will be in the recruiting pipeline and there’ll be a slightly better philosophical diversity of ideas on the campuses that allow concealed carry!

    “…the Second Amendment’s protection of a well-regulated militia” ? Protect a Militia???

Is such a statement a prime sample of that cuckoo-clock-professor’s level of knowledge? If so, he should not be out in public without a keeper(!), and he certainly has NO business being in ANY position of leadership… educational, political, or social.

  • John L May 29, 2017, 11:38 am

In the immortal words of Curly Bill Brocius. “Well……..bye?

  • Sam48 May 26, 2017, 8:59 pm

I’d call this boy a liberal leftist <()<%$*<%@r, but he's probably already proud to be that.
    "HAZ PATRIA !
    Mata iqueridista liberales!"

  • Curly May 26, 2017, 6:15 pm

Good for you professor. Do everybody a favor and take all of your liberal idiot friends with you. With all of you liberal dumb asses gone, I am sure America will return to being number one in education.

  • Bruce Bennett May 26, 2017, 5:17 pm

Poor excuse citing the problem recruiting “professors” from the left and even more “left” east coast to come to the heartland to teach our kids. Who wants the liberal/progressive/socialist swine in Kansas anyway? Not me for sure. Some of them might drift down here to Oklahoma where it would not be good at all. Maybe the excellent Kansas Higher Education System is better off without this fellow anyway.

  • Frank Staples May 26, 2017, 4:36 pm

The school is now a better place. ..as one more liberal person who believes in criminal behavior from his law abiding fellow man is now not polluting the minds of our kids!!

  • S. Velez May 26, 2017, 4:23 pm

This person is a stupid intellectual who thinks they have the moral duty to tell you about your own life, free speech and second amendment. To hell the roll of this academic hypocrisy.

  • Darryl May 26, 2017, 4:11 pm

first glad he’s gone and will him his progressive, commie, liberal lefty mind. second just as in all the states who have allowed CC in their towns and cities knows nothing of the bad blood in the streets has happened like the left said it would just as nothing will happen in these schools by law abiding CC students being there other then people that have known they could walk in and shoot up the place without anyone doing anything to them. UK had better wise up quick if they don’t want a bunch of the commie, progressives coming in and not only destroying their school’s but also their town and make sure they DON’T hire a bunch of this trash to teach in their schools for they will end up as so many others have that their schools go from a place of learning to nothing more then a place of riots and non-free speech place that the left only destroy from the inside out.

  • Lou Fisher May 26, 2017, 12:44 pm

Associate Prof. Jake Dorman should take a sabbatical to Sierra and visit a few schools to get the hang of blowing up the place and the students inside – I don’t think the subject of guns on campus had been discussed there – ‘Ya, I guess it’s pretty dangerous in Kansas ‘packing in class’ – None of the colleges that now allow carry, no one has been shot there, How about that!

  • Infidel7.62 May 26, 2017, 12:38 pm

Good, if he is so stupid to believe he is in danger from legal concealed carry he should not be teaching. period.

  • JerryB May 26, 2017, 12:33 pm

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass!

  • deanbob May 26, 2017, 12:04 pm

“He believes that allowing students to carry firearms into the classroom will have a “chilling effect on free speech” as heated arguments could “easily” become “lethal.”” That is really rich considering how many conservative students have had their grades (and possible future livelihood) effected by the liberal progressive professors who do not tolerate nor debate many issues.

  • Raven33 May 26, 2017, 11:06 am

Liberals fear allowing firearms because they realize it’s the liberals themselves who respond with violence when things don’t go their way. He fears his own thought process for dealing with issues he disagrees with. The tea party protested Obama with zero violence. The left has rioted over Trump. Which group has the history of violence?

    • deanbob May 26, 2017, 12:22 pm

Most of the marches and protests done by the liberal progressives end up with some assaults and/or broken car and storefront windows. They are just seem to be very unhappy and angry people

  • Les Peterson May 26, 2017, 11:00 am

Colleges have become anti-free speech zones, anti-gun zones (until a shooter shows up to randomly murder), and speaking with many students, it is apparent they have become anti-critical thinking zones–especially when the sacred cows of liberalism are gored. This professor, with suitcases packed, is a boon to freedom in Kansas.

This idiot will probably move to to the Communist state of Calif.
    We need more anti’s NOT>

  • tom May 26, 2017, 9:21 am

I take umbrage at the remark that “…we have to recruit professors from coastal areas and progressive college towns …”, this is utter nonsense. There are plenty of well qualified Ph.D.’s suited for tenure track positions from conservative areas such as Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. None of these areas are the coastal areas of California, or New England. What the professor is actually saying is that premier academics only can come from the Ivies, Stanford, or the University of California System. That is utter hogwash and merely demonstrates this professor’s ignorance. An advanced degree from an Ivy, Stanford, or UC school is admirable, but I’d put a Ph.D. from Rice University right up there with them as I would a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, or University of Oklahoma, or Colorado School of Mines. This academic snobbery must end.

  • Ram6 May 26, 2017, 9:05 am

“…it must recruit professors from “coastal areas and progressive college towns where most people do not believe that randomly arming untrained students is a proper exercise of the Second Amendment’s protection of a well-regulated militia.”

That statement right there is a perfect example of what’s wrong with the university system in this country. The recruitment of lemming left wing, socialists to continue the tradition of indoctrinating our children in their mindless socialist drivel of how society should be is what has contributed to the creation of a generation of snowflakes, afraid of their own shadows, needing play dough, bunnies to pet and safe spaces. How about recruiting academics who are conservative and don’t all think like the lefties from the coasts and actually understand what the 2nd amendment means. Good riddance to this asst. professor, one less indoctrinator in Kansas colleges.

    • John Dow May 26, 2017, 5:24 pm

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to post that quote, you beat me to it.
How about recruiting professors that come from top ranking conservative universities. There are such things.

  • srsquidizen May 26, 2017, 7:38 am

The KS legislature has wasted huge amounts of time on this non-issue and now they’re in overtime trying to get real business done like passing a budget. With no security screening on campus (except certain events that draw crowds) it’s pretty obvious that people who should NOT have guns on campus are already carrying them. If one of them should totally flip out or decide to collect his 72 virgins, the outcome is sure not going to be better by having all other students defenseless.

On campuses that have done the same thing in other states it has become a non-issue. Sane students don’t shoot classmates because they disagree with them. The insane don’t need any reason at all. Should they be the only ones armed?

  • Dr Motown May 26, 2017, 7:05 am

“We must recruit professors from coastal areas and progressive college town” that don’t believe in the Second Amendment….that pretty much says it all. Another left-fascist who only believes in rights that he likes.

  • Frank May 26, 2017, 7:03 am

Some “smart” people over-think and over-complicate things.

Bad guy with gun, only answer that works most of the time, good guy with gun (or the possibility of the area having good guys with guns).

  • Tom Coats May 26, 2017, 6:18 am

Sitting in the dark, with a handgun on the desk top, wondering what will happen to Kansas, the red state political map, and the absence of all those “coastal professors from progressive college towns”? Whoa, Kansas don’t use common sense and left wing liberalism, just to take a chance on some kid saving his life or someone else’s if a crazed shooter enters the campus or class room. I am cautious about guns for students, but can’t see a good reason to fear it until something happens to make voters change their minds. Violence and threat are real, so are guns and bullets in the hands of potential victims.

  • Mike May 26, 2017, 6:03 am

Sources say the professor went home and dug a hole, then crawled in and buried himself.

  • Rich. May 26, 2017, 4:01 am

See ya, get the hell outta school, leave the country to.

  • LHTwist May 25, 2017, 9:03 am

Citing concerns about armed students discussing “sensitive and highly charged topics,” Associate Professor Jake Dorman published an op-ed in which he states that “Kansas can have great universities, or it can have concealed carry in classrooms, but it cannot have both.”
So guns and education are mutually exclusive?? This snowflake automatically assumes that the mere presence of guns will turn any debate into a shootout?? I guess that doesn’t say too much about his teaching and influence, nor does it give any credit to the students themselves.
I’d say it’s the school who wins here. They’re better off without the likes of such a short-sighted moron corrupting society. Send him packing… his sheepskin.

  • SuperG May 23, 2017, 10:23 am

The bright side is that an ignorant “teacher” will no longer be polluting the minds of our youth. Maybe he’ll become a reporter for the Huffington Post.

  • Aaron May 23, 2017, 10:17 am

Another leftist professor with no ability for critical thinking and no capacity for logic. The Kansas student body is better off without this guy.
