Kelly McGillis Gets Her Gun after Assault

Kelly McGillis said she plans to get a concealed-carry permit after narrowly escaping a home invasion in North Carolina. McGillis, television and film actress, is probably best-known for her role as “Charlie” in the global hit “Top Gun.”

McGillis described the attack in detail, which took place on Jun 17 at around 9 p.m. “When I put my key in the front door it was unlocked,” reports Entertainment Tonight. “I thought it was strange but I made up the story that maybe I had left it unlocked just as I had left the bathroom light on.”

“A stranger, a woman, came barreling down the hallway and began yelling at me,” she said. “I asked her who she is and why she was in my house and she said ‘you know why, you’ve been stalking me in Twitter.’ Not true.” McGillis has since removed the post.

Fearing that there may have been more than one intruder, possibly armed — McGillis keeps guns in the home — the actress decided to make a break for her truck.

“[The attacker] ran out after me and began punching and scratching me trying to grab the phone out of my hand. I began screaming as loud as I could hoping someone somewhere might hear me. I still had my car keys in my hand so I set off the car alarm. That distracted her enough to throw the cell and try to deal with the keys. More fighting ensued.

“I got the cell phone back and dialed 911 again. More fighting … I finally broke away, got in the truck and drove off trying to find a neighbor to call 911. There was no one around since it was Friday night, so I chased someone in a car, kept flashing my lights and honking the horn. They finally pulled over and she made the 911 call for me. A truly good Samaritan.”

Police have identified the assailant as Laurence Marie Dorn, 38. She is facing second-degree burglary, misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor stalking, assault and battery and interfering with emergency communication charges. Dorn was released after making bail.

McGillis is, sadly, no stranger to violence. She has come out as the victim of multiple assaults and rapes, the first at the age of 12 years old and as a result has decided to carry.

“After each one of these attacks I have moved thinking I could find a safe place,” said McGillis after the attack. “The incident Friday night has now pushed me over the edge. It has been my tipping point. No, I am not a victim. I am a survivor. I am left with all the terrifying feelings of PTSD and trying to pull myself out of the very depth of the all-consuming depression and despair.”

“All I have ever wanted is to feel safe. Safe in my own home … I can’t think. I can’t eat. And I am terrified to be alone … That’s why I am going to start carrying a gun.”

Police issued McGillis an emergency permit and she’s received concealed-carry training.

“They rushed me through the conceal and carry course so I am armed and ready. The Henderson County Sheriff’s department has been absolutely the greatest.”

This lady has had some really bad experiences. Reading through some of the comments I was shocked to see the lack of compassion by some because she is gay. Also the assumption she is anti-gun due to her connection with Hollywood. She says in the beginning of the post she states there were guns in the house, but not on her person. After the terrorist attack in Orlando I hoped we as Americans would have gotten passed the homophobia. If it\’s not your or my choice of life style doesn\’t mean we should judge those who are gay. As a human being and christian it is not my place to judge others, but it is right to show compassion, friendship, and or fellowship because we are Americans. These are really messed up times we are living in and being stuck on someones sexuality is the least of our worries. I applaud Ms. McGillis for the mere fact that she has survived so many personal attacks. Including being brutally raped by two men early in her own NYC apartment at the beginning of her acting career. If we want our country back near the way it was pre-Obama there are some things that have changed we have to accept and join together as Americans or we lose period.

Wow, she’s in my neck of the woods… It’s a shame people are having to “wake up” in this manner…

    IS the Perp a Man??
I think I see an Adams Apple, which ONLY men have!
As the world gets more sexually confused and gender bent, you begin to wonder who is who and what is what!

    • dward July 1, 2016, 3:00 pm

wrong – adam’s apples are not gender specific, they are part of eveyone’s anatomy. While more prominent in men, they do in fact appear in women. get your facts straight.

She must be conflicted, protect herself as an American, or fight against guns as a lesbian with GAG, Gays Against Guns, that popped up after Florida. Decisions, decisions .

    • Z July 1, 2016, 9:55 am

How about you stop conflating separate incidents to justify your anger at the misinformed anti gun crowd? What happened to miss McGillis has nothing at all to do with her sexuality, her political inclinations, or her citizenship.

She then by virtue of her celebrtity should give back to her fans across the nation by standing with 2nd-Amendment organizations = ALL OF THEM- and do TV spots for them pro bono.
May save the lives of some that get her message = a good public announcement ~!

I’m deeply regretful to hear of any home invasion where people are left physically and emotionally injured. I don’t know for a fact, but I suspect she followed the Hollywood gun hating narrative. I don’t for a moment expect any of that to change with the exception of the person assaulted, however it only drives home the point that when presented with a life threatening situation to late to call 911. In the end it’s up to all of us to decide weather you are going to defend yourself/family or, like Ms. McGillis be unprepared for such tragedies. We all need the OPTION to possess a means of defence or risk injury or death..

“I don’t know for a fact, but I suspect she followed the Hollywood gun hating narrative.”
The article clearly states that she owned firearms and they were present in the home.

Sorry sweetie,, in the South LIBERALS don’t warrant us possibly risking our lives for…
Why would we risk our lives for someone who has VOTED to destroy our country ?

    • Z July 1, 2016, 9:45 am

Who asked you to risk anything?

      • Mort Leith July 1, 2016, 1:22 pm

She said none of her neighbors came to help when she screamed… TRY to follow skippy

  • huck July 1, 2016, 7:56 am

Bet she voted libtard her whole celebrity life!

  • Infidel7.62 July 1, 2016, 7:51 am

Good thing she was a celebrity so everything could get rushed through. Good thing she wansn’t in The Peoples Republic of NJ or CA as even the burglary/assault probably would not have been enough to get the permit. and NJ has about a 6 month wait for you r first pistol, 3 months to get your FOID card and 3 more after you get the card for you permission to purchase one handgun.

    • Tom Hart July 1, 2016, 9:57 am

Vote with your feet and leave NEW GERMANY (NJ) or any other non 2A friendly place!

    • Z July 1, 2016, 10:07 am

The Florida emergency concealed carry law applies to all of the states residents, not just former movie actresses. Your discontent with the laws in California and New Jersey shouldn’t have anything to do with the laws in Florida or the victim of a home invasion and assault getting a concealed carry permit. I’m glad she’s taking on the responsibility for her self preservation and I wish her a happy and healthy life. I hope more Americans follow suit.

      • Capt D July 1, 2016, 11:38 am

I believe the article said this took place in North Carolina not Florida.

    • Mort Leith July 1, 2016, 1:24 pm

In Georgia,,, if you don’t receive your CCW permit within 2-3 weeks of application,, the State gets TONS of trouble….

      • Justin July 1, 2016, 7:17 pm

Ya in ohio they have 60 days after you submit your application and pay the fee. Gotta love pro 2a states like Florida ohio and arizona off the top of my head. Got mine (ccw) in five days after my class. Call my springfield xds .45 my american express lol DONT LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!

        • Joe McHugh July 6, 2016, 8:10 pm

Justin, more and more state legislators are moving toward constitutional carry legislation. The state of Vermont was always a constitutional state, regarding guns. In Vermont a state resident can purchase a handgun and carry it without applying for a gun license or permit to carry. The only problem the Vermont people have is in traveling through dictatorships like my state of New York. New York doesn’t recognize out of state gun licenses. The New York State Troopers go completely nuts discovering a Vermonter who has a handgun in his car. Bad enough that there is no New York Sate license but no paperwork whatsoever?!?! Vermont residents are careful to leave their handguns at home when traveling through the People’s Republic of New York.

Constitutional carry refers to the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms without government infringement.

She may be armed, but not necessarily ready. Unlocked door, no alarm, gun in the house…

  • Jack July 1, 2016, 7:37 am

I feel for her. It’s just a shame it took her so long to wake up.
Multiple rapes and assaults from the age of 12????
    Glad she seen the light.

  • Jimmy Carter July 1, 2016, 4:49 am

Way to go Kelly! its sad that you have to do this, but as dangerous as our world is, your not safe in your own home! You have been a victim over and over again. Now you are empowered! You are six foot five and a WWE wrestler with that gun in your hand! Enjoy target shooting, and make new friends down t the local shooting range! Welcome aboard!

  • David Teixeira July 1, 2016, 3:38 am

Well she had multiple attacks as a survivor how many chances do you take before you get the hint? And she already had guns in the home.

  • Will Drider June 29, 2016, 12:52 am

She seems like a privat person and probably doesn’t want to take on a public roll, but she would be agreat Spokeswoman.

  • taxx73 June 29, 2016, 12:45 am

Good for Kelly. Welcome to the real world where people are responsible for their own safety. Cops can\’t be there 24/7. We are the first line of defense against the bad guys. 75% of the evil in this world is done to average people so why can\’t we protect ourselves in the manner we are comfortable with. You just can\’t tell me that there isn\’t some kind of weapon in every home in America. Wether it be a broomstick, baseball bat, kitchen knife or gun. Self defense is instinct. LEAVE OUR RIGHTS ALONE!!!!!
