KelTec, the company that makes the wildly successful Sub2000 pistol-caliber carbine, recently asked customers what they’d like to see in a potential model chambered for .45 ACP or 10mm Auto. Specifically, they want to know which pattern of magazines to go with.

Right now the Sub2000 or Sub2K is offered in a handful of configurations chambered for 9mm Luger or .40 S&W. Depending on the model the carbine is compatible with Beretta, Glock, SIG Sauer or Smith & Wesson handgun magazines.

It’s a light, compact, and extremely simple carbine setup that still manages to include a few frills, including a folding design for ease of transport, as well as a modular-accessory-railed forend. The Sub2K fanbase is huge and runs the gamut from backyard plinkers to outdoor enthusiasts and small game hunters to everyday gun owners who prefer a pistol-caliber carbine for protection and home defense.

If we were to develop a Sub2000 chambered for .45 ACP and/or 10mm,” asked Keltec on Facebook, “Which magazine configuration would you prefer?”

The potential in that question is very entertaining. Of course shooters want a Sub2K in .45. Of course shooters want one in 10mm. Of course they should be compatible with every possible .45 ACP and 10mm magazine pattern on the market!

The Facebook post has several hundred comments on it and they offer up all the usual suspects like Glock, SIG and Smith & Wesson, plus some extras including Springfield XD and various 1911-pattern magazines as well.

Glock-pattern magazines seem to be the most popular, and that makes a lot of sense as the company has strongly supported both .45 and 10mm. Glock-compatible Sub2Ks are already very popular, with support for big extended magazines as well as restricted magazines for people living with magazine capacity limits.

Sure, it would be nice for some shooters to get out-of-the-box support for their less common handgun magazines, but for the sake of getting new carbines out the door, it’s better for KelTec to go with what will sell the best.

As far as .45 “and/or” 10mm … there should be little doubt that a Sub2000 chambered for .45 ACP will be more popular. But hopefully there will be enough love for 10mm Auto to make that happen, too. As a whole, .45 ACP is more flexible with a lot of factory options and carbine loadings already, although 10mm is a lot hotter with standard ammo.

Hi-Point, who also makes popular and fun pistol-caliber carbines, has been very successful at selling guns chambered not only for both .45 ACP and 10mm Auto, but even .380 ACP, in addition to 9mm and .40 S&W.

With the current and ever-increasing demand for pistol-caliber carbines, the question of “When will we see a .45 ACP or 10mm Sub2K” is almost as relevant as “Why hasn’t KelTec done this already?”

In any case, we can’t know when KelTec will come out with Sub2000 carbines chambered for .45 ACP and/or 10mm Auto. But they’re taking the idea seriously and that’s great news on its own.

10 mm would be sweet when packing out elk in bear country

For the love of John Moses Browning Keltec……give us a .45 acp Sub 2000 that uses Glock mags!

It’s insane that gun manufacturers have ignored the .45 acp like this. Yes, we know, the 9mm is the most popular but the .45 acp has a huge following too. With the popularity of the 10mm returning, and exceeding its original release, it’s a no brainer to offer an affordable carbine in these two calibers.

I’ve searched everywhere for an affordable .45 acp carbine that uses Glock mags and they just don’t exist. The Hi Point uses its own low capacity mags which was a terrible decision. Seriously, centering your carbine around your own low capacity mags simply because your pistols use that mag is insane from a business standpoint. Sure you appease the reliability small number of Hi Point pistol owners who also want a carbine but you alienate a much, much, much bigger potential market of shooters who use Glock, M&P and other big name brand magazines.

Keltec….as a former Cocoa resident I’ve always rooted for you guys but, so far, I haven’t found a product that speaks to me. Please give us an AFFORDABLE, reliable, accurate .45 acp/10mm carbine that uses Glock mags! My G21 would be so happy to finally have a partner and my high capacity mags can finally realize their potential.

Now if Keltec would happen to read this and make my dreams come true…

If it can handle .45 Super and .45 SMC, I will buy it on the spot.

  • Mark August 9, 2020, 11:40 am

Please start with the 10mm using glock mags once that’s a success then we’ll talk about a 44 magnum that uses desert eagle mags

  • Erik Eriksen August 5, 2020, 6:50 pm

Would be interested in a rifle in a 45 ACP cal.

  • Amanda Gayle Dale July 14, 2020, 3:00 am

Can you inform where one can go online to purchase Kel-Tec .45 acp sub 2000?

  • Paul May 19, 2020, 10:40 am

If you make the 2000 in, say, .45 SUPER, and being able to shoot .45 ACP as well as .45 SUPER, that would be more sellable than a 10mm. BUT, I’d take the 10mm to!

.45 ACP, by itself, does not give much more power with a longer tube (10mm does, and so does .45 SUPER.) Kel-Tec can make the rifle take either 1911 mags or something else. Same for the 10mm. Glock mags will do fine!

But I tell you Kel-Tec, I’ll buy one if it is in 10mm or .45 SUPER. I have a 10mm Delta Elite and a S&W 625-3 (it can take .45 SUPERS!) and I’d be happy with either one!!

Build it, and they will come!

  • John Bonds May 13, 2020, 10:45 pm

I’d love for the sub 2000 to be in 10mm. Also I hope keltec makes a model in 10mm to take Glock mags

    Thank you

    • W. Bradley September 8, 2020, 9:27 pm

Have you tried looking at J.R.Carbine or TNW Aero? Both of these can be chambered in 45ACP, and can also use Glock mags. The JR’s are around $700. The TNW’s start at $599

  • philip January 29, 2020, 8:32 pm

    I will buy one

  • Richard Bartlow September 13, 2019, 4:10 am

.45 all day long, then someone can develope a rotary mag

  • George Stump August 28, 2019, 2:45 am

Don’t know what problem is getting sub 2000 I ordered one at local store gen 1 then gen 2 got first after 2 weeks got second after 10 days have enjoyed both would love 45cap in glock 21 mags

  • BR August 25, 2019, 1:46 pm

Make it in 10MM then it can be used as something besides a range toy. No versatility with a 9 or a 45, range toy or home defense. With a 10 you can hunt and have adequate punch for bear country.

  • Bones4442 August 24, 2019, 11:15 am

10mm please. Already have a Mechtech Glock 20 conversion, but its heavy. Either the Keltec or Ruger PCC takedown that uses Glock 20 mags would be better. Bring it!

  • Fred scarcelli August 23, 2019, 6:51 pm

I have two 9mm sub 2K’s both tricked out with m carbo full package. I’d like a .45 and Glock mags please?!

  • E Healey August 23, 2019, 6:31 pm

Kel-tec doesn’t make guns year round so that is the reason they are hard to get sometimes. I’m happy with my 9mm sub with the glock 17 handle (sub with the 19 was too small for my hand) after I mcarbo’ed it all out it is a awesome weapon. I’d recommend the butt pad and the recoil washer for recoil management. I did a trigger job on mine but the factory is fine if you don’t want to sink another $250 ( if your going to do it, do it right) or if you don’t have faith in your skill to take it apart. The mcarbo parts fixes all the weak or cost cutting parts in the weapon.

  • wiscogunner August 23, 2019, 11:44 am

Kel-Tec, PLEASE make your 10mm SUB2000 compatible with the DOUBLE STACK 10mm magazines used by the Rock Island Armory 2011 10mm and the PARA 10mm Double Stack. That would give SUB2000 owners 16+1 rounds of 10mm…and THAT would be awesome in a PC Carbine!

  • Dennis August 23, 2019, 10:47 am

Makes no difference to me…I may not be able get anyone here in California…

  • Prepperdaddy August 23, 2019, 10:22 am

10mm PLEASE! And make sure it will take block mags!

  • Marc August 23, 2019, 8:52 am

You will first find a unicorn than a Sub 2K. It took me almost two years and paid over price. I like the platform because is light, very handy when folded and discreet. I up-graded with Mcarbo. Its Achilles heel is its front sight. While shooting steel match came loose. I replaced it with a Red Lion sight.

  • Kevin Cote August 23, 2019, 8:51 am

How about .357 magnum or .44 magnum ?…. then we have big game capacity.

    • MB August 23, 2019, 11:10 am

Wheel gun ammo doesn’t feed well in mags, and since there are no mags for .357/ 44 mag, the magazines would be proprietary and very expensive.

      • John Barna January 14, 2020, 2:44 am

You could always set it up for Desert Eagle mags if you want 357 or 44 (or God forbid 429DE)

    • W. Bradley September 8, 2020, 9:36 pm

Glock has a pistol chambered in 357. You could build one chambered in 357 formated to use their mags. Just sayin.

  • Mark Telep August 23, 2019, 7:56 am

I would say that the 10mm would be adequate protection up to bear. Such a small, handy package should be a welcome sight for hikers and campers.

  • Scott J August 23, 2019, 7:31 am

Mine in 40 SW kicks way harder than I like. I can only imagine the kick from a 45 or 10.

    • JD Clayton August 23, 2019, 2:06 pm

40SW is higher velocity, faster burning powder so the recoil is “sharper” than a 45. The 10 is still not as sharp as the 40 and only slightly heavier than the 45 of the three I’ve shot in my pistols and my ASR carbine, I find the 45 the most comfortable of the three.

  • Blasted Cap August 23, 2019, 6:30 am

Sign me up. I’ll take one in each caliber. Love my 9 and 40 versions. Fun guns.

  • James Boliek August 23, 2019, 6:28 am

The Sub in .45 would be a real winner.

  • U.S. Otriad August 23, 2019, 5:31 am

While the article is about, and I certainly enjoy, the Sub2k platform (especially the MCARBO version); I’ve oft wondered why they haven’t invested in a PLR16 in 300BLKOUT. The 9.2″ barrel length is perfect for that round.

  • Dr. Strangelove August 23, 2019, 4:28 am

I ordered a Sub2000 at my LGS and they couldn’t get one for years. Kel Tec’s availability makes them rather unattractive.
