Kick-Ass 7.5mm FK BRNO Pistol Green-Lit by ATF

Ballistics Competition Current Events Industry News Long Range Archive Max Slowik Pistols This Week

We have some great news for the unicorn ranchers. The BRNO Field Pistol received ATF approval and will soon be available in the United States. The Field Pistol is chambered for the 7.5mm FK cartridge that shoots a roughly .30-caliber bullet at .44 Magnum power levels.

“Earlier today I received an email from the executive manager of FK BRNO,” writes the Firearm Blog’s Phil White. “Mr. Slabke informed me that the ATF had just approved the immediate importation of their 7.5 Field Pistol into the USA. We should see these pistols on store shelves when enough arrive at the distributor.”

The BRNO Field pistol excels at target shooting even at long ranges and handgun hunting for small and some medium game. The 7.5mm FK is a bottleneck cartridge that necks a 10.8mm case down to 7.5mm. It is a completely new cartridge designed for use with the BRNO Field Pistol and the BRNO Field Pistol only — at least for now.

7-5mm-fk-cartridge

The 7.5mm FK cartridge is 10.8mm at the case head and has an overall length of 35mm. (Photo: FK BRNO)

When fired from the Field Pistol’s 6-inch barrel, the 7.5mm FK cartridge makes 885 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. BRNO holds that the bullets still make well over 500 foot-pounds more than 100 yards out.

Designers had specific goals in mind developing the 7.5mm FK cartridge. At 150 meters the projectile was required to remain supersonic, penetrate a minimum of 300mm (11.8 inches) of ballistics gel and create a minimum permanent cavity diameter of 35mm (1.4 inches). All this with no more felt recoil than .45 ACP +P by power factor.

The 7.5mm FK BRNO Field Pistol has a 14+1-round capacity — with each shot making 885 foot-pounds at the muzzle. (Photo: FK BRNO)

Preliminary testing indicates that these handguns will be capable of shooting sub-MOA groups at more than 100 yards — 25mm groups at 100 meters when fired from a rest. Few handguns have ever boasted that kind of accuracy; this is custom revolver territory, only with a semi-auto handgun with a 14+1-round capacity.

The BRNO Field Pistol shares a striking similarity with CZ’s timeless and often-copied 75 series. That’s probably not a coincidence as the company is headquartered in Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic. The similarities are somewhat skin-deep as the Field Pistol uses a special recoil-attenuating tilting barrel recoil operating system. It would be surprising if any CZ or similar pistol shares any components with the BRNO pistol.

“This is not a modified design of another product or pistol model,” explains FK BRNO. “This is a completely new and unique concept and design. The design is very ergonomic and even though the magazine holds 14 35mm-long rounds, the smallest hands will be able to fully wrap around the optimally angled grip of the pistol. The frame and slide are very slender and streamlined for such a size cartridge and caliber.”

FK BRNO lists the Field Pistol’s frame width at just 1 inch wide. It’s not a small gun by any stretch of the imagination. It measures over 10 inches long, 5 inches tall and weighs 46 ounces unloaded — just shy of 3 pounds. But between the flush grips, narrow cartridge and short single-action trigger the Field Pistol should be manageable to anyone who can lift it. It also has extended right-handed controls including the slide release, magazine catches and manual thumb safety.

The company has two models in development, the Standard and Combat models. The Combat model slightly differs from the Standard model. It is a dehorned version for a smooth, snag-free draw from a holster.

FK BRNO has several sight systems in the works from fiber optic iron sights, red dot reflex sights and their in-house “Butterfly Sight” system. The Butterfly sights use an open rear and fiber optic front sight designed for precision shooting at extreme pistol ranges.

Prices and a solid timeline are still a ways out. We’ll let you know more as soon as we find out.

I have owned a 44 mag for decades and it produced about 1,300 lbs of muzzle energy from a s&w model 629 with 8.375″ barrel. He must have compared it to a snub nose or reduced load. Terrible comparison of a 44 mag by any rights. My old revolver loads are to hot for my deagle so I have too tame them down a bit. Accuracy comparison 100 and out to 200 yards it rings steel easily. When he 2 shot the elk that was pathetic. I am no means against hunting because I love them quail not a venison eater. I could have dropped it with a 22 mag its easier than one would think especially at that short of range. I wonder what state the was done at to be able to shoot an elk with a small caliber semi auto handgun. .

  • Anthony K. Worsley December 26, 2018, 1:18 pm

Just another rich man gun. I will stick with a 44mangum, do not have to shoot 100 yards down the way.

  • John J. Pellegrino December 1, 2018, 2:33 pm

This 7.5MM handgun which is actually .30 caliber sounds like a great gun but for $7500, compared to what I paid for my .30 caliber (M1 Carbine cartridge) Ruger revolver that you can still buy for a lot less money, it’s no question for me, I will stick with the Ruger. My .30 caliber Ruger shoots flatter than my .44 Mag Ruger and it is accurate at longer ranges than most revolvers (my opinion). The only complaint I ever heard about a .30 caliber Ruger is that they are loud, and they are. This 7.5 MM auto with a bottle-necked cartridge has to be every bit as loud and probably louder. It definitely is more powerful but not in proportion to its cost.

  • TOMH May 11, 2017, 8:28 pm

I too was excited and looking forward to getting one until the retailer told me the price. Starting base models start at $7500 retail. Will never pay that price. You can get two or three Colt Pythons for that price.

    • Rich January 1, 2018, 6:00 pm

Way too much, for me also.

  • Luis Muniz April 1, 2017, 12:43 pm

I was very exited on purchasing the fk until I saw that video.Poor animal did not had a chance and is a shame that video just got recorded just to show viewers the power of that weapon! For the companies hope, you guys should get rid of that video.

    • John BlackSheep April 28, 2017, 10:10 am

Totally agree. with Luis. As a hunter, firearms instructor, and human, the assassination of the animal in this video is exactly what we don’t need the “anti’s” to see. It served no purpose other than to elevate some ego. Stupid and cruel.

    • Logan September 12, 2017, 1:09 pm

Are you kidding me!? Seriouly, as long as it didn’t go to waste, and I sure it didn’t what is wrong with hunting? In fact, with properly managing game, populations get out of control.

  • Jacob L Cross March 31, 2017, 4:16 pm

Well said about looking for unicore,
But in all realness a 44 mag fired out of a marlin lever action will looklike a dragon. Fire breather

  • Esx January 2, 2017, 12:26 pm

I will be in line for one. Miss my automag a lot. My 10mm Tanfoglio guns get close and the 10mm is my new favorite round, but this sounds like quite the long range plinker I would like. Plus, what fun for a handloader. Esx

    • M. Mayren April 16, 2017, 10:30 pm

Hey, what happened to the Brno 7.5? It’s not for sale anywhere and there’s no pricing info. available that I can find— anybocy know anything??

  • Pops45 November 24, 2016, 12:52 pm

Immediate importation, still not here yet a month later. I am probably just impatient, I just hope they don’t Keltec this. It is a nice looking pistol though, hopefully they bring enough in.. Soon

  • Joseph Vanchieri October 19, 2016, 4:16 am

OMG, my son askedd me the other day what I thought if they necked down a 44mag to a 9mm. I told him it would be kick ass. Now I see this. Not exact but close to what he was asking. What are the odds?

  • ATheoK October 18, 2016, 9:59 pm

A .30 Carbine 110grain bullet starts off at 2000FPS, from a rifle barrel muzzle; generally 18″.
Foot pounds of energy is 977 foot pounds at the muzzle and 575 foot pounds at 100 yards.
    —————————————————————————
“FK BRNO, Field Pistol’s 6-inch barrel, the 7.5mm FK cartridge makes 885 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. BRNO holds that the bullets still make well over 500 foot-pounds more than 100 yards out.”
    ——————————————————————————–
So the 7.5mm FK is roughly equal to a .30 carbine in terms of velocity and foot pounds of energy.
The last I heard from .30 carbine pistol shooters is that the cartridge is somewhat powerful and not really pleasant to shoot from a pistol; loud and kicks.

I doubt that it’s much of an armor penetrator.

    • Torn June 7, 2019, 4:23 pm

I’ll grant you a .30 carbine is loud, but where do you get the idea it kicks? Had a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 and it was a hoot! Loaded it with Speer 100 gr. 1/2 jacket plinkers and it would shoot 100 yd. groups that I wont mention cause I would be called a liar. Certainly not a kicker.

  • D K. October 17, 2016, 3:08 pm

Since when does ATF get to decide whether a new caliber can be sold? I could maybe understand their ruling on an ammunition type.

    • Orillion April 15, 2017, 1:07 am

They’re not ruling on the caliber. They’re ruling on the pistol. Since it’s imported from CR, and imports do have to have authorization. Unlike CZ they don’t have production facilities here. The only reason the cartridge is relevant is that this is a cartridge that is proprietary to this manufacturer, and purpose-build for this pistol.

  • Jacque Mehoff October 17, 2016, 6:10 am

Make it affordable or else it dies a natural death; another obscure gun and ammo for the collectors and gun enthusiasts

  • Bert October 16, 2016, 4:22 pm

Love the new pistol, have been a collector, shooter and hunter for a long time. Stick to the paper shots shooting what look to be a tame animal no sport there, this just gives the anti-gun and anti-hunters more ammo.

    Just my two cents!

    • bob hunt October 16, 2016, 10:39 pm

Your comment about shooting the live deer has limited validity. This was lethality testing after all. I think the shooter striking a typical “look at my trophy” pose was both misleading and in extremely poor taste. As an aside, I know at least some States do not allow hunting any animal with any semiautomatic pistol.

    • SteveK October 17, 2016, 4:21 pm

      Agreed!

    • Just1Spark February 13, 2017, 5:27 pm

Most likely that was an Elk farm where those Elk were going to be slaughtered, and they apparently allow testing/hunting.
Or its a ‘canned hunt’ business, with extraordinarily approachable Elk.

I can say, the Elk meat farms ive been to, you can get even closer than that to the Elk.
Not smart. But ive done it.

  • booker noe October 16, 2016, 4:01 am

Trigger slap LOL….and he still works there…….smh………and the “hunting” was bullshit as well……as usual…more money then sense….

  • George October 15, 2016, 9:29 am

I had 357 auto mag with a 10 inch barrel that did a verygood jobsorry I sold it308 cut down to 44wanks neck down to 357

  • BIGEJ October 14, 2016, 10:44 pm

I think I will keep carrying my Desert Eagle 44 Magnum it holds 9. PPL stand aside when I walk buy. lol

  • Czechmate October 14, 2016, 10:23 pm

Similarities with the CZ skin deep eh? That barrel with twin locking lugs and the tilt action is identical down to the kidney shaped hole for the slide stop. Not to mention the internal rail design to keep the bore axis low. This is a very good CZ clone.

  • Chris Augustine October 14, 2016, 8:39 pm

Anybody else irked by the “hunting” at the end of this video? I was all about this until the shot some tame animals on a farm like it was supposed to impress me about how great the gun and caliber was. Also, that first one looked like it was a bad shot, anyway.
They really lost me there – what a terrible way to market it. I am actually angered by that.
(I have no issue with firearms or hunting – that was not an appropriate example of either.)

    • angel October 15, 2016, 7:40 am

I’m with Chris..but that was totally unnecessary, test using ”paper targets””, another item what is with that price,,,surely the gun writers will be calling it ”affordable” way off the common working man……………..gotta love it…….

      • Jas October 15, 2016, 3:50 pm

        Boohoo

    • Jerry October 15, 2016, 2:23 pm

Have to agree. I enjoy venison as much as the next guy, but that was not hunting.

    • Vic October 15, 2016, 2:34 pm

Large game animal dropped immediately.. was dispatched quickly in place. Demonstrating that a reasonably placed shot at a modest distance will bring a large game animal down…. That’s an effective field test.. The meat is now in someones freezer.

Really not sure how one objects unless the objection is to eating meat..

    • Randy Allen October 15, 2016, 4:17 pm

I agree. Also, it is yet another handgun cartridge. Do we really need one? If it’s like a .44 Magnum, just shoot a .44 Magnum. It’s already here, the guns are cheaper, and rounds are already being made.

      • Ralph October 16, 2016, 5:24 pm

It has ballistic energy at 44 mag levels, the similarities end there, it is as differant a round and a weapon as a truck is to a race car, are you seriously that stupid? Do you read?

    • GBH October 17, 2016, 9:47 pm

I wholeheartedly agree with you I have been a gun enthusiasts for many years as well as a veteran of the armed forces. That display at the end of the video was horrible and very distasteful! I agree with you they had me sold on the weapon until the end when they shot a harmless animal who looked like he was grazing on the farm. I just hope they used the Meat and that the poor animal didn’t give up its life for absolutely nothing!

  • GENE LUKSHAITIS October 14, 2016, 3:57 pm

approx. cost of hand gun and ammunition please

    • Captain Bob October 15, 2016, 1:46 am

MSRP will be in the $3,500 range, give-or-take $500.
Ammo will be in the $1.50/round range until (hopefully) domestic manufacturers begin production.

      • B December 13, 2016, 6:47 pm

Another overpriced weapon the regular hard working person can’t afford !

  • J E Wilson October 14, 2016, 3:22 pm

I will absolutely own one, when available, to replace my 30 Carbine AutoMag. I only hope they make a 10 round mag for legal ownership in CA.

    • Skid October 20, 2016, 8:37 pm

Unless you are Law Enforcement or have a Parent out of State who can gift it to you……… You can’t have one! Sucks I know, I live here too and Jerry Brown screwed us when he put a stop to “Single Shot Exemption”. This handgun will never get on the “Safe Handgun Roster” without Micro Stamping. If you can get one, you can have the mags blocked to 10 rounds by a local FFL if they have a Hi Cap permit. Good luck, I want o ne too!

  • Kosh75287 October 14, 2016, 3:15 pm

I guess the point of the 7.5mm projectile diameter is to penetrate body armour. Using some surmises, approximations, wild guesses and some basic geometry, I estimate the projectile will weigh 125 – 150 grains and have a muzzle velocity of 1780 – 1603 f/s (respectively). In effect, a turbo-charged semi-automatic 30 caliber .357 Magnum. It oughtta be a handful, and a darned loud one, at THAT! I do like the lines of the pistol. I wish they’d make it to shoot the 9x25mm Mauser (in effect, the 7.62×25 Tok, blown straight). THAT round might not penetrate body armour, but I’ll bet the blunt trauma would be a b!tch.

  • JOHN T. FOX October 14, 2016, 1:14 pm

THIS IS A GOOD THING! I’M SAVING MY MONEY. I’M GOING TO OWN ONE OF THESE! SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE CHEAPER TO SHOOT THAN A .44 MAG. THEY SHOULD HAVE A 2.5X SCOPE VERSION TOO. MY EYES CAN’T USE OPEN SIGHTS ANYMORE. AN ILLUMINATED PRO-SHOT RETICLE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

  • Smith User October 14, 2016, 11:42 am

In my S&W 4013TSW are MagSafe personal defense rounds. With 1800 fps, .40 cal., 602 ft-lb, 81 grain, they should be extremely effective.

  • Cyrus October 14, 2016, 11:16 am

No thanks – I will stick with my Python!

  • Mike MacKay October 14, 2016, 11:00 am

Gotta love that new pistol acronym: FK BRNO, ahem, or “F**k Bruno.”

Poor Bruno, looks like he’s, well, you know “F’d”

  • Calvin Grimalkin October 14, 2016, 10:42 am

Well Pilgrims, anybody remember the .357-.44 Bain and Davis?
It was a .44 Magnum case necked down to .357 and sported velocities in the range of 2400 feet per second with 110 grain bullets and 2200 feet per second with 125 grain bullets. It was primarily chambered in revolvers, not sure if it was available in the Desert Eagle or not.
In my humble opinion, anything putting out this kind of power level would be a great hunting handgun, or backup for dangerous game, but a little too hard to control for urban defense. And that being said, I think I would prefer the revolver as the backup for dangerous game…… clearing a jam with a semi auto when you are in a Jam would seem like a negative. Just sayin

    • JOHN T. FOX October 14, 2016, 1:17 pm

YOUR MISSING THE POINT. THIS NEW GUN WILL PENETRATE KEVLAR AND UN BATTLE ARMOR. ALL IN A CONCEALABLE PISTOL THAT CAN SHOOT, DEAD ON TARGET, OVER A BLOCK AWAY! THAT IS A TACTILE ADVANTAGE!

      • mike October 14, 2016, 4:03 pm

        john, tactical too!

      • Scotty Gunn October 14, 2016, 5:22 pm

Carry a rifle. I have yet to have a need to defeat soft armor with a handgun. If I ever do, I will just gut shoot them until they are down….

      • John J Kang October 15, 2016, 12:51 am

        Don’t believe the hype.

      • angel October 15, 2016, 7:56 am

john can you really see to aim that far, and surely there will be someone looking to make a softer recoiling round, for your URBAN warfare……………….

  • John October 14, 2016, 10:09 am

    I’m happy with my 5.7😉

  • John R. October 14, 2016, 9:24 am

Generally the price of anything new, pistols, razor blades, electric cars, the list goes on, reflect the cost of R&D and often when R&D costs are recovered the price might be relaxed and if this new round takes off other manufacturers will develop firearms to accommodate it at a lower price point.
Kinda reminds me of all the hype surrounding the .357 Sig or the .45 GAP that was going to revolutionize the shooting world. In the end they were just another pistol round and most everyone is still shooting .45 ACP or 9mm.
Give it two or three years and see how it plays out.

  • Dr. Strangelove October 14, 2016, 8:25 am

If you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it. Nice pistol, though.

    • john October 14, 2016, 10:48 am

      Stupid comment

      • Dr. Strangelove October 15, 2016, 6:45 am

        Stupider reply.

        • Michael October 7, 2017, 8:15 pm

“Stupider” not offence but, did you take English in high school? “Stupid”, “more stupid”, “stupidest”. There you go.

    • mary Griffin October 15, 2016, 11:07 pm

You should ask how much anything is, from an apple to a house. It’s called smart. Not having an open wallet allows you to buy more down the road

  • Witchdoktah October 14, 2016, 8:14 am

I like the idea but technically it’s. .30 cal with .44 power. How is that different than that Dillon round. Necked down 10 mm with a .30 cal projectile. A lot cheaper to own a glock 40 or delta clone for similar firepower. Just saying

  • Joe Valdez October 14, 2016, 8:04 am

I think this is a beautiful gun. The price would keep me away. Until prices come down, I would stick with my 10mm as a side arm in North America. As for the post referring to the 5.7 x 28, not a good or fair comparison. The 5.7, much like the H&K 4.6 x 30 (MP-7) is designed for multiple shots in CQC situations. Remember all guns are tools and as such have a specific purpose. Having said that, some tools are more versatile than others.

  • Dale Bailey October 14, 2016, 7:49 am

I will bet there is one more outstanding characteristic about this handgun . It is going to be LOUD , like a .30 carbine Ruger Blackhawk is LOUD . This gun is going to be begging for a threaded barrel version and a silencer ..

  • Krp57 October 14, 2016, 6:57 am

Beautiful pistol. But I wonder if a 30 Tokarev in a 6 inch barreled pistol, With careful handloading, Might make one wonder if the price tag is warranted.
Add that this cartridge exceeds most handgunners capabilities ? A $250 Tokarev may be a better investment. Since the Tokarev has been noted for over penetration. I have to wonder ? What’s the point ?……………………………

    • KWR63 October 14, 2016, 7:55 am

I agree with KRP57 . This new gun sounds a lot like the old TOK. Go figure it is a Czech gun. I don’t see any point to developing a new cartridge when the old TOK 7.62×25 is just fine and a lot cheaper.

      • Bisley October 14, 2016, 9:01 am

The reason for the new cartridge is the same as for the .357 and .44 magnums being long enough not to fit in .38 and .44 specials.. If you were to stuff some of these hot-loaded things into a .30 Mauser, or Tokarev pistol, the results would likely be devastating on both ends.

      • John the baron October 14, 2016, 9:34 am

I agree with KRP57 and KWR63—–happy to see there others who appreciate the 7.62×25 round and the dependable Tokarev design. Check out the newest version of the Zastava TOK commercial production—really good safety and a blue job that the “big name” companies should envy! AND–the price—around $270 +/-. Enough said–thanks

  • Todd Jaffe October 14, 2016, 5:37 am

Price I was told was over $5,000.

  • william, October 14, 2016, 5:35 am

YES. So So Nice. But. If Thay Put That Thing. (HILLERY CLITON) In. We May NOT Have Any GUN;S. ???? GOOD LUCK. I Am Going To Try And Get One As Soon As Thay Get Here. So I Can Hide It. ????

  • Robert Leto October 14, 2016, 5:14 am

    Great bear country option

    • Whyawannaknow1 October 14, 2016, 11:21 am

Bears call for a wider hole than this thing will make, with an exit wound- All that subcutaneous fat makes bears the “self sealing tire” of the animal world… If it is at arms length, any of the magnum .44 through 480 double action pistols with a medium to short barrel loaded with hard cast, wide meplat and heavy for caliber bullets will be what you want- And weigh less, along with being easier to carry in a shoulder holster, faster to deploy. Now, for silhouette shooting on a RANGE, I might like this.

  • Boba Fett October 10, 2016, 7:47 am

That pistol is gorgeous, and if it can really do what they say it can do, it’s probably going to be expensive as hell too. We’ll see!

  • Lyle Johnston October 9, 2016, 3:20 pm

I have been looking at the 5.7X28 for awhile, IF this came in a commander size for carry, It would be BADASS!

    • Kivaari October 10, 2016, 3:00 pm

This is a lot more than the 5.7mm. Last word I saw on price was $3000. That’s a bit much for most of us to try for a cartridge and gun that may not last a year on the market due to over-pricing.

      • Warren October 14, 2016, 4:30 pm

With prices like that….they can keep it

  • Will Drider October 8, 2016, 8:11 pm

    Dear Santa Clause,
I got good grades in firearms training this year. I have been doing all my chores. I have played nice with all my friends. I have not punched out anybody this year except the careless guy at the gravel pit who kept crossing me with his muzzle. So if you can swing it, that FK Brno 7.5 Combat model would be a great Stocking stuffer! Thanks Santa.
    Sincerly,
    Little Will

    • DRAINO October 9, 2016, 6:01 pm

Stocking stuffer????!!!…..dang, I wonder what’s on your regular list? LOL!!!

      • Jerry October 15, 2016, 2:30 pm

He requested a mint 1928 Thompson SMG with FBI case signed by J.Edgar Hoover.
        Santa.

  • DRAINO October 8, 2016, 12:07 pm

I LIKE IT!!! Wonder how long it will take before we see these sights on other pistols. Would love to try one of these. Glad to see the market is getting a shake up. Us normal Joe’s probably won’t be able to afford one, unfortunately.
