Revolutionary Takedown/Barrel Swap AR D Ring Collar - Check This Out! - NRA 2017

The LEO Takedown in action.

The coolest thing I saw at NRA 2017 was the LEO Takedown.  The funny thing was, Lance Maffet, the inventor of the product, was just coming here to test the waters.  He was borrowing booth space from another exhibitor.  He had no idea his product would rouse the interest it did.

So, what is the LEO Takedown?  It’s a rapid barrel removal and attachment technology that allows you to swap out a barrel or take down a rifle in seconds with no tools required.  No lie, check out the video.

It works on direct impingement AR-15, M-4, M-16 service rifles, and direct blowback AR pistols that utilize a MILSPEC grade upper receiver.

Features

  • Patent Pending Technology
  • Made in the USA
  • Military Grade Steel
  • Black Oxide treated
  • Gross Motor Skills Operation
  • Positive Locking Technology
  • MILSPEC standard threading

A little more on how it works, from the website, “Upper Receiver Case replaces the D-Ring assembly. The Barrel Coupling is designed to accept commercially available hand guards and integrates with the Upper Receiver Case for a positive lock between the barrel chamber, the index pin, and the upper receiver. Once installed, the barrel chamber remains within headspace gap tolerance, lateral and fore & aft movement of the barrel is restricted, cycle of operation is normal, and battle sight zero remains intact.”

Made from military grade steel.

Lance is currently in negotiations with Uncle Sam on a potential contract for the LEO Takedown.  I asked him about the commercial price for us civilians and he said it should run in the neighborhood of $350.

For more information, make sure you check out the LEO Takedown website.

just ask this guy what it is made of and he cant tell you … (military grade steel) ok great that tells me nothing . gas tube failure happened @ shot show on day 1 and left him almost stranded so yes its an issue . has been showing this thig off for 2 years (before patent) and still has no stock or date of availability and has tried to partner with plenty of people but to no avail .
great concept for SOME people not everyone but to bad the guy doing all the talking is clueless . shame because the guy is a combat vet .

Absolutely crazy!!! Where do I get a couple. Go from my .223 to my .458 in seconds. WOW!

  • Mak-Attack May 2, 2017, 12:17 pm

If this new ar – platform gadget really works, then kudos to the inventor! Yes there are pros &cons, but just the fact it works, at least makes toting an ar-15 around that much more concealable, discreet, easy, etc… -&you can’t deny that bag definately looks very cool… -fit, feel &function. -I am in agreement that until the price is lowered a bit, it’s a lil more than I want to spend to change one of my ar’s over, just to carry it in that cool bag… &as like every other average joe, who’s into their firearms &loves our 2nd ammendment. .. it’s not yet a total necessity… but is def positive that it’s avail to the public &not just military &/or law enforcement. So what do you think the next new movie will be that debuts the use of this system &it’s awesome carry &deployment bag. -I think it would def make the next John Wick movie that much cooler. Don’t you? Lol!! 😉

As others have noted, this looks just like the dolos system that I built about 2 years ago at about half the price.
Also, re the head spacing, that is a function of bolt, barrel extension and barrel, none of which is impacted by this or the dolos QD systems.
There is at least one dead deer that can attest to the single shot effectiveness of the 300 aac pistol in dolos configuration.

At $350 per, I don’t see much advantage over just removing the two pins and taking your AR down just as Eugene Stoner intended.

    • American USMC May 1, 2017, 8:08 pm

I agree The AR is already a take-down rifle. Great for the inventive idea of Mr.Lance Maffet , I don’t need this ,but I hope he sells a pile of them. Good old American know how.

All I see is disadvantages with this over switching uppers such as loss of accuracy, your optics are mounted on the receiver, not the barrel so every thousandth of play you have between parts such as these, the barrel and receiver, equals inches downrange. My other magor problem is like most you guys, the gas tube, what a joke! A little bump that bends this thing 20 thousands or more is out of action! The idea is good for police needing to keep a low profile these days but other than that I can’t think of any. The caliber switching thing in my opinion is b.s. because if for instance the 300 B.O. is deployed its going to have its own platform for accurate silenced shots. A 9MM? Who wants a subgun caliber in something large as an AR these days? An HK any day. A police agency that has the budget for AR’s of any kind can afford dedicated caliber weapons. Then theirs the “Thumper” cartridges such as the .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, ect. I don’t see the point in these because the AR platform can only withstand around 1500 ft/lbs of energy so you can basically get the same results if you pick the weight of .223/5.56 bullet for the job. How do I know you should ask, well I have +25 years experience with this platform, own many calibers and configurations. Anyway nice gimmick until the gas tube issue is resolved, and until then it will be nothing more than that to me. If the D.O.D is considering this thing I hope its fixed before they buy 100,000 or so. Remember its maintenance free debut in Vietnam? We don’t want that again. That’s my 2 cents worth.

All good points – and thanks for mentioning things that hadn’t occurred to me, such as the inevitable additional play at the LEO connector after a hundred rounds or so of recoil, barrel expansion from heat, accumulated grit if you change barrels in the field – no. I hope that in the tight appropriations bill passed this week, there’s just enough money to buy a dozen of these things and send them out to a unit in the AF/PAK that won’t see a lot of action, so they have time to fiddle around with the barrels in the dirt.
As far as military use is concerned, a deployed rifle unit needs its rifles out and in soldiers’ hands, all the time. When, exactly, are you going to take these weapons down? Often enough to justify $350 and complicating what Eugene Stoner purposefully made a simple system – not to mention exposing the gas tube to damage at every take-down? The whole point of a military rifle is a weapon that can take ABUSE in the field and still function. The Kalashnikov action is ideal for irregular soldiers because while its action has so much play, anything better than 1.5 MOA accuracy is fantasy, that loose action is easy to keep clean and working and tolerates a lot of rough handling. It does what the bad guys need it to do.
Handicapping our troops with another complication impacting the gas tube (arguably the single weakest part of the AR design) so that you can take the AR down at the barrel instead of just removing the upper (which requires no additional hardware to accomplish, the AR’s built that way) isn’t bright. I hope Army and the Navy guys at Crane take a hard look at this, shudder, and pass it by on the other side of the street.

  • Bob Cochrane May 1, 2017, 12:32 pm

This would work well for carrying on a motorcycle …

  • Robert Bell May 1, 2017, 10:51 am

I’m still not understanding something… 5.56 mm Vs 7.62… How does the action and the clip, for the difference in size, make that doable?

    • Dave May 1, 2017, 11:53 am

7.62×35mm otherwise known as the 300 Blackout

    • Wayne May 1, 2017, 2:23 pm

      What clip? A magazine?

  • Barbara Fee May 1, 2017, 10:48 am

The gas tube part scares me. I think if it came with a protective cap to prevent damage to the tube it would be better (or does if and i missed it?)
Though part of me doesnt see the point when 2 pins and you can change the entire upper, thereby changing the barrel, or caliber which would include a new BCG if the caliber requires it

  • Mister Ronald May 1, 2017, 9:48 am

I just don’t see the point in this item except the gang banger will be able to hide and carry his AR’s much easier.
    Other then that. EXPLAIN ????????????

    • Barbara Fee May 1, 2017, 10:53 am

Most “gang bangers” prefer ak variants, or mac 10s. Not precision AR platform rifles

    • Dave May 1, 2017, 12:03 pm

At time 3:10 of the video he explains why

  • CDR-C May 1, 2017, 9:07 am

The DOLOS system, there is a part which attaches to the receiver, and another which attaches to the barrel / handguard. As previously stated, DOLOS requires alignment of the gas tube (just like this LEO system does). The DOLOS requires about 1/3 turn of the handguard / connector. For twice the price, I don’t see twice the value of this LEO over DOLOS.

I do like the bag, though.

  • triggerpull May 1, 2017, 8:23 am

Easy on, easy off, easy drift, easy jam.

  • Mika May 1, 2017, 7:57 am

Look at that gas tube just waiting to get bent or broke!!!! Only Cry Havoc Tacticals QRB addresses this problem. On a take down gun the last thing you want is that getting damaged. Why would anyone want to risk that on this airhose connector or the dolos spinner?

  • Rip May 1, 2017, 7:07 am

    LOVE IT, TRUE INNOVATION

  • Jim Cicconi May 1, 2017, 6:44 am

I saw this guy at the NRA Conference too. Not to take anything away from him, but Ruger already perfected the TakeDown barrel change over. What you can’t really see because of the angle of how he’s putting it together is, you have to line up the gas tube with it’s hole, perfectly, or else your going to damage the end, or bend it! In a high stress situation it’s not going to go well every time. It’s easy at a conference or show, after a lot of practice to get it just right. Besides Ruger has a much better way of getting it together, with a 1/4 turn it’s done. I own the SR556 TakeDown by Ruger, and I saw this demonstration, there is no comparing the two. This guy invented a really nice air hose coupling, and is trying to adapt it to a firearm. Also Ruger already came up with the whole carry bag thing. Just my opinion….JC

    • jeremy May 1, 2017, 10:23 am

what? I’m not sure this is meant to be a high pressure swap out….who the hell swaps out barrels mid-fight?

      • loupgarous May 1, 2017, 4:38 pm

Squad Automatic Riflemen, and they do it with squad machine guns, not ARs.
However. I’m with all the guys who are scared of gas tube damage on this one. If it can break, it will.
I’d also like some confirmation on the headspacing being right every time. That’s the other worry with high-powered automatic rifles, and I’ll take the word of an armorer who sets headspaces all the time over the inventor’s that his system works.

  • Cody May 1, 2017, 6:35 am

So, what’s new here? Pantheon has had their DOLOS system out for well over a year now. This looks like a straight copy of that besides the fact that’s it look twice the size.$350? The DOLOS runs like $185. Yep, revolutionary stuff here…

    • Rick May 1, 2017, 8:16 am

I check dolos it attaches to the rifle barrel not the receiver so you would have to buy more than one.

      • Cody May 1, 2017, 12:38 pm

You have two parts with both systems, they are no different. One part attaches to the receiver, the other onto the barrel/hand guard portion.

  • Greg May 1, 2017, 6:33 am

Interesting product. If they can make a mass production version that can continue to handle the pressure, and the price goes down I’d love to get one. For less than $350, I can get a pretty decent upper, and do the same thing.

  • Joe May 1, 2017, 5:51 am

The man took an air tool quick connect coupler and applied it to an AR platform. I call that good ole American ingenuity. I hope it’s his grand slam !!

  • Derek Tiller May 1, 2017, 3:27 am

Wow, to be able to switch between 5.56 and 300 blackout that easy, I’m sold!

  • TOM April 30, 2017, 10:16 pm

Can’t wait for a big bore AR version of this.
