The chief of the Miami Police Department is blaming two high-profile drive-by shootings over the weekend on a supposed lack of federal gun control. The incidents left three people dead and at least 26 people wounded.
“It’s just an indication of the problem we have with the scourge of gun violence in this country that we need to do much more at a federal level to stop,” Art Acevedo, chief of the Miami Police Department, told CBS’ Face the Nation.
“We need to have universal background checks. We need to make burglarizing these licensed gun stores a federal crime with mandatory sentencing. And we need the federal government and both sides to address this issue,” he said. “Because without legislation, without certainty as it relates to holding these criminal accountable, we’re never going to get through this summer without much more death and destruction.”
On Sunday, three men with guns opened fire in a drive-by shooting at a banquet hall that left three people dead and 23 wounded. On Monday, another drive-by shooting left two people wounded while another attempted robbery turned into a gunfight.
The three men responsible for the Sunday incident are still at large. Police say they exited a white Nissan Pathfinder and opened fire on a crowd outside a banquet hall with handguns and “assault rifles.” Law enforcement do not know how the men obtained their firearms.

Police say they do not know the precise motivation of the murderers, but that it likely stemmed from a dispute between two gangs. The men waited in their car for about 40 minutes before exiting and firing on the crowd.
Several people in the crowd were armed, and they opened fire on the attackers.
The banquet hall shooting was the sixth known instance of gun-related violence since Thursday, according to the Miami Herald. County Commissioner Keon Hardemon called the string of attacks “clear… acts of domestic terrorism.”
Like most major American cities, Miami saw a sharp uptick in homicides in 2020 while the nation’s gun laws remained virtually the same. There were 272 homicides through December 24, 2020, while the previous year saw only 241, according to The Miami Times.
Federal gun control laws aren’t the only thing chief Acevedo pinned as responsible for his city’s rise in violent crime. He also called out the nation’s criminal justice system for allowing felons to operate on the streets while their cases are stuck in court.
“Our criminal court system across this country is absolutely at a standstill. They are not moving cases, thousands of felons running around, and cases languishing three to five, six years before they even go to court. We’ve got to get our system back on track,” he said.

They’re just allowed to keep roaming the streets and doing what they do. The “Soros” elected DA’s aren’t prosecuting many of them. In New York, a judge recently let a murderer walk out, without even posting bail, because their laws are so weak on actual criminals. Instead they would rather go after law abiding gun owners, as if they are the problem. We already have background checks, yet they keep whining about needing background checks.
A policeman I know told me he used to work in the jail and would often have conversations with the inmates. One time he asked them where they were able to get their guns since they weren’t allowed to buy one legally. They would laugh at him and say that they just give $300 to “Timo” on the corner and they would get their gun without any problems. Yet, liberal politicians, and that’s what this ‘chief’ is, will always feel that punishing law abiding citizens will serve their interests better than actually going after criminals. Sounds like Chief Acevedo needs to do his job instead of blaming federal gun laws and law abiding citizens.

A police chief who has come out as pro gun control, where is the story here ? They occupy a sort of no man’s land between their charges (cops) who are overwhelmingly pro gun rights, and political hacks, and their administrations who are afraid of armed citizens, and therefore oppose citizens. being armed. I’ve never seen a parallel drawn, but I’d be willing to bet that in cities where a Republican administration is solidly in control, that the police chief being appointed, as opposed to sheriffs, which are elected, is a lot more likely to be supportive of an individual’s right to keep an bare arms. Burglarizing gun stores absolutely SHOULD be a federal crime with mandatory sentencing. That’s where so many of the guns used in crimes are obtained. He also mentioned “holding criminals accountable”. Who’s against that? The universal background checks are already a federal law for FFL’s. I have no problem with selling or gifting a firearm to someone you know, but for your own protection you should keep record of who you bought from or sold to (especially if it is a stranger) because if it is ever used in a crime it can be traced back to the last registered owner. We do not need any laws that make it harder for law abiding citizens to buy a gun but we do need to keep them out of the hands of criminals who give us all a bad name and the media ammunition. Long mandatory sentences and strict law enforcement on the existing laws would go a long way to improving our problem.

When someone speaks of “Universal Background Checks”, they are talking about having background checks conducted on all private sales between individuals. (Twenty-eight states require background checks on private sales and transfers at gun shows. The only time a licensed dealer (FFL holder) performs a UBC is when the state they operate in mandates it. (Twenty-eight states require background checks on private sales and transfers at gun shows. At least 15 of those states require background checks on ALL private sales and transfers conducted within the state.)
More guns are stolen from private residences than are from gun shops. Most firearms acquired by criminals are done so through the local black market.
Unfortunately, most District Attorneys will drop gun charges during a plea deal to get a quick conviction on lesser charges.
Actually anytime an FFL holder does a transfer he is required to do a background check wether the transfer is private or not. An individual may do a private transfer in some states without a background check. Many states require a background check for private transfers also. The loophole is in many states that require background checks for private transfers, it is for “sales” only. You can legally “gift” a firearm to someone who lives in the same state without a background check.

By saying the Feds should handle this, he’s saying, “I don’t want the responsibility of handling this crime that occurred in my City”. If Mr. Acevedo wants stricter laws that he has the authority to enforce, he should be looking to his state legislature to enact the laws and pressure the Florida governor to sign it. Stop and frisk! it worked in NY under Rudy and it will work everywhere it is implemented. If your concerned about blacks being targeted by this policy then do something about the fact that 80%+ of all homicides are committed by black men. If your trying to stop murders in these black communities, then it only makes sense to stop and frisk black men in these communities to see if they are carrying an illegal firearm.

Funny how the cities with the most gun laws have the most crime, and they still want more gun laws. While not taking responsibility for their own problems, they blame neighboring counties and states without gun crime for the problem.
And that is another lie from the Left. You cannot go to another state and purchase a firearm. If I as a Florida resident, want to buy a gun from a GA dealer it must be transferred to an FFL dealer in my home state which will perform the background check.

Well Steven, that’s not necessarily true. Cops killing blacks is illegal, whites killing blacks is illegal but blacks killing blacks (or whites) is ignored so it must be legal.

These laws only affect law abiding citizens NOT criminals. These jerks will not prosecute so we the citizens are the only ones who follow the law.

Afraid to offend a major constituent group of Democratic Party voters they refuse take the necessary action to end the problem. Police chief’s are the sycophants of the Mayor, as that is who hires and fires them, so they mimic whatever the Mayor says. The problem is that you have an infestation of gangs there, and you need to go after them. But that would be preemptive police work.
Art has been banging the same drum for a long time, and it has done well for him. He started as the Chief in Austin, then moved up to Houston, and then on, presumably with a fat raise, to Miami. IN each and every post, he has castigated the lack of will to enact “tough” gun control laws that will keep dangerous firearms out of the hands of criminals. As if.
Miami police chief circumvented the problem until the last part of this article or the author got it wrong- you have the necessary laws in place. you need to get YOUR courts to act. you also need to come down hard on street/drug gangs before you whine for more gun laws that you won’t enforce anyway !!
Stop and frisk worked in NY under Rudy. It was not the average black citizen that complained, why would they, their neighborhoods were the safest they had been in decades! It was the activist who complained. Why? Because they do not want black neighborhoods to be safe.
