Michigan Speaker Disarms House Staff: ‘Weapons do not belong in the workplace’

House Speaker Joe Tate, D-Detroit is a Marine Corps veteran.  One would think that given his military service, he would understand the importance of personal defense and the role that firearms play in ensuring one’s personal safety.

However, this week Speaker Tate foisted a policy on employees of the Michigan House of Representatives that prohibits them from bearing arms on all House property in downtown Lansing.

“Weapons do not belong in the workplace,” Amber McCann, a spokeswoman for Tate, told The Detroit News. “This policy helps ensure the safety of all House employees and aligns with most people’s expectation of an office environment.”

It goes without saying but House staff with concealed carry permits are vetted twice by the government.

Once when they apply for a position to work for the lower house of the Legislature. And, then again when they go through the process to obtain a pistol permit, which includes firearms safety training, fingerprints, background check, and a photo ID.

A sensible politician would argue that, along with law enforcement, these are precisely the individuals a lawmaker wants armed when they are in the workplace, especially because Speaker Tate’s policy does not impact members of the public who are visiting, House sergeants, or state lawmakers.

In short, Speaker Tate is disarming and rending helpless the very people he and his fellow colleagues should trust the most. If you can’t trust your hand-picked staff, who can you trust?

This doesn’t make any sense at all, as State Rep. Angela Rigas (R-Alto) noted in a post on Facebook.

“Both members of my staff carry to not only protect themselves, but to protect anyone in need at the House,” Rigas wrote Monday. “This new policy will effectively put ALL staff at risk, especially the hundreds of young women who work here.”

It should be clear what’s going on here. Speaker Tate is caving to the anti-gun forces that have a stranglehold over the Democratic Party. Call it cozying up to Bloomberg’s billions.

As a result of this widespread effort to curry favor, the vast majority of Democrats have taken a hostile stance toward the 2A. Even when it endangers their own well-being, as is the case with this pointless gun ban in the Michigan House.

Think about it. How else would a Marine veteran like Tate come to the conclusion that disarming good guys — the folks he entrusts to work side-by-side with him and his colleagues daily — make bad guys less dangerous?

The truth is gun ban or no ban, violent offenders can show up at the House with weapons. The only difference now is that there are fewer people with the means to stop them dead in their tracks.

So, Speaker Tate’s either gone full-blown moonbat or he’s doing the bidding of Bloomberg in the hopes that there’s some sort of kickback in the future. I’d wager on the latter.

Speaker Tate, for whatever reasons I don’t understand, wanted to create a safe space for a lunatic with a gun to work in. And he did it! No one can defend themselves. Pure genius, I tell ya!

I believe that former Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp (R-TX) put it best: “How a politician stands on the Second Amendment tells you how he or she views you as an individual… as a trustworthy and productive citizen, or as part of an unruly crowd that needs to be lorded, controlled, supervised, and taken care of.”
So this illustrates perfectly how Mr. Tate regards his colleagues and without doubt the rest of Michiganders.
By the way, is this “policy” ratified and coded into our state law or just another one of those “opinions / executive orders”? ‘Cause we all know what opinions — especially ones from uneducated / uninformed politicians — are equivalent to, and should be kept where the sun does shine.

Disarm them ? Leave them all exposed as undefended? Was this guy hit with the stupid stick? Why does he think criminals attack areas that are no carry zones? The article didn’t say that criminals would be affected by this. UNBELIEVABLY STUPID.

I would ignore his bullshit and carry anyway like I did for thirty years working for various people.

I strongly agree with your assessments of Mr Tates actions. Goes to show you that whatever military service a would be politician claims,if they are supporting the Socialist,Communist,Democrat or any other political party that is not supporting the constitution as it is now written, agreeing, donating to or supporting them in any way puts this FREE DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY AT RISK. I don’t care if thye are running for dog catcher to President, Do not support them!!

Nothing like putting up a sign for criminals to do their work! Just like a no concealed carry weapons sign on a bank door. It’s just saying no one in here is carrying a gun come on in and rob us!

“A target rich environment.” Does Speaker Tate also state that if any staff is hurt or worse by violence, that staffer or heirs have a right to sue him personably for damages?

As a Marine myself, i’m ashamed to think that this Moron ever earned the title ‘Marine’ and wore the uniform.
    Chesty would be equally ashamed.
    Communists abound these days.
