National Guard Soldiers punished for enabling bikini calendar shoot

Authors S.H. Blannelberry

No good deed goes unpunished. Right?

Perhaps this fits that bill, perhaps it doesn’t. But one Utah National Guard officer has been stripped of his command after permitting women and photographers to use the facilities at Camp Williams for the 2015 Hot Shots Calendar, the New York Daily News reports.

Guard Lt. Col. Steven Fairbourn told the Daily News Saturday that a 19th Special Forces noncommissioned officer who permitted the video to be partially shot at the training center south of Salt Lake City also faces a reprimand and mandatory early retirement.

Along with the officer, three other soldiers who participated in the photo shoot will be disciplined, including counseling, reprimand and a fine to the tune of $200 for fuel that was used.

“Productions of this kind are not in keeping with the values of the Utah National Guard nor its members,” the National Guard said in a statement.

Along with the National Guard soldiers, two members of the Utah state SWAT team will face disciplinary measures according to officials at the Department of Public Safety.

I cannot imagine that the officer in charge would’nt know this would end up comming back to take a bite out of his ass? Then again you think what is a little fun? But the military is not Hollywood and who would not wanted to be in a video man speaking should I say if that makes any sense. But on military property and the ever present danger of anything happening to any of that group the government would have to take care of it. A weapons malfunction, or a weapon getting loose from one of the young ladies, too bad but I understand, War is not a thing such as hollywood and when at camp you are training to live not to jack around. I loved it but I understand.

the military and politicians still regulating morality and sexuality.. sounds no different than Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, etc. No different than SHARIA LAW.

  • G I Joe May 17, 2015, 4:36 pm

I live just 15 minutes away from Camp Willams and heard nothing about this on the news. It’s too bad that some people screwed their military careers up trying to help this group but that’s Utah.

Id10ts , other than weaponry, our Military hasn’t grown up since ’72 when I was in country as an 11 Bravo, and for 13 months discovered how stupid our (supposed) leaders were ! And the same kinds of bastards are still running the show! Great spirit of the cosmos help us!

What a big bunch of bull****! nobody got hurt and a buttload of calendars get sold, big deal.
I remember a LOT of WWII posters showing scantily clad women in sailor suits, fatigues, etc… but most of all a lot of half naked women were painted on the noses of many an airplane and nobody got in trouble! why cant politicians leave well enough alone when it comes to morale boosters like this? now where is my checkbook….

  • superauto November 17, 2014, 1:20 pm

The sad part is fifty percent of the proceeds from the calendar go to help disabled and wounded warriors (men and women). My guess is Lt. Col. Steven Fairbourn of the Utah National Guard, the jagoff who initiated the investigation, is just pissed because he wasn’t invited. Stupid.

Punishing our brave soldiers is despicable.
Just our guys making sacrifices for us all.
Nothing new or anything they’re not used to.

  • Pat November 11, 2014, 11:12 am

If this is so out of line with the military then when are we going to ban the use of govt planes and facilities to fly NFL cheerleaders to overseas locations for moral visits to the troops. Add that gas price up! Wake up you political correct people. Nothing different or wrong here.

What you see here is a bunch of type “A” guys and gals doing what type “A”‘s do.
That’s why those guy’s do what they do and anybody that doesn’t like it are the types that don’t have the talent or the stones to compete with them. Hell even these gal’s have more balls than most of you!

  • Jim November 10, 2014, 6:43 pm

Tasteless and darn close to porn. Unusual for Utah, and really has very little to do with Army life, and I doubt that things are that risque on a fire base, or are they?
With all those “guns” flopping around and “loads” being shot, I am glad nobody got distracted and killed anyone.

These Kids work hard they should get to play hard.
If you haven’t endured the training, given up being a teen ager to put your life on the line so some sissy can critize you, then SHUT THE kcuF UP. If you are a high ranking officer, go to bat for you people. Just because you did’t have the balls to make a film like this while you were young, remember these are the same kids you are going to ask to go to bat for you. Your reward a new star and a few thousand more money in your retirement fund, and a pat on the head from Obama or Hillary. Their reward for standing out, worse treatment that we are allowed to give Federal Prisoners (make them sleep outside in the hot and cold, wind and rain, and carry a 60 pound pack all day and let the guards randomly shoot an equal percentage each day and see what happens). Jesse and Sharpton would have the whole country rioting. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK- When you’re released, take your talents and skills to a film company and make a real movie, you’ll be paid and appreciated.

Well duh… I don’t know how much gun safety was practiced behind the scenes, but at face value not very much, seems to be a lot of use of government resources for a private venue. I think the only thing positive would have been “raising” the national guardman’s morale. But all in all it paints a picture of the National Guard as a bunch of party animal loosers who only “play” soldiers. Not true, as many have gave their all overseas, but not a surprise higher ups took a dim view of the whole thing. I mean after all of that, they at least should have added a National Guard recruitment add.

If it had been a half black half Hispanic gay guy , they probably would have gotten a unit citation for promoting diversity

  • Andrew November 10, 2014, 11:38 am

I can’t imagine a better recruiting drive. Don’t let the pompous, self-righteous, butt-kissing do-gooders get you down! To everyone, keep up the good work!

  • nonobaddog November 10, 2014, 9:31 am

Punishment?? Really?? Who ever made that decision should be punished. Must have been made by a total brain-dead politician type.

  • DanF. November 10, 2014, 8:31 am

I rather suspect that if this had been a California Guard unit there would not have been this discipline imposed. Maybe the reimbursement for fuel costs….

  • Steven Fisher November 10, 2014, 5:36 am

As the song goes….if you can’t be good….be good at it! We’ll done anyway!

  • What I know November 5, 2014, 12:49 pm

One hell of a recruiting poster and film

    good job girls

  • Rudy November 3, 2014, 5:43 pm

Why are we, lately, only looking into minor issues, always trying to punish and demorilise our warriors? Let warriors be warriors and keep those envious pencil pushers away. They -those pencil pushers/burocrats/politicians- make worse decisions and mistakes than our warriors! There is going to be a time when we will need our warriors and few will respond because we have been experts in castrating them and I know for sure those pencil pushers wont do anything that will put them at risk! Nothing wrong with beauties and men in uniform. Remember the old Play hard, live hard!

    • DaveBlank November 10, 2014, 10:07 am

How disgusting! Where do I get a copy? I see no sexist implications. However I am not up to date on my political correctness. But I believe the punishment is way to stiff for the crime. Ladies if I am missing something please let me know.

I was a paratrooper trained at fort Campbell, Brag, and Benning for jungle warfare. I left Nam in 1967 after my 2nd tour, and never looked back. I never had any reasons for reenlisting or wanting to play soldier again. UNTIL NOW. Where do I go to sign up?? I may need a waiver because I’m 68 years old, but off set that with how mean I get if I don’t get enough sleep, Miss my morning coffee, and had to do without indoor plumbing for more that an hour and I’d be more than the equal of any 10 enemy you could put me up against. Would you check and see if any of those girls are looking for a new boyfriend? Someone three times their age, 100 pounds overweight, bad heart and no money.
Seriously I could not function in an army that did not think this was a bad idea, I think the leadership should put out their own calendar. They are exhibiting more feminine traits and are bigger pussies than the girls I saw. Their calendar would be a sell out among the Village People and all the real men (like Bill Clinton) that went to Canada got his Anti-military training and came back to be the supreme commander of our armed forces. The only people this will offend is the Wimps and Sissies that wouldn’t join a the service anyways.

If a National Guard had participated in this back in WWII — probably get a unit citation for a great recruiting project. But in 2014, in the modern, men and women Guard — unbelievably stupid idea. The leadership got what they deserved.
