Coming off a victory in Washington state with the passage of I-594, Everytown for Gun Safety is setting its sights on Nevada as the next state to push for universal background checks on all firearms sales and transfers, including those made over the Internet and at gun shows.
Working in conjunction with the pro-gun control group Nevadans for Background Checks, Everytown collected approximately 250,000 signatures, which far exceeds the 101,667 signatures required for a ballot initiative.
Citing poll data that suggests there is widespread support for background checks, allegedly eight out of 10 residents back the idea, proponents of the UBC ballot initiative believe that it’s only a matter of time.
“Clearly, Nevadans want their elected leaders to require background checks on all gun sales,” Kayla Keller of Nevadans for Background Checks told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “But if they refuse to act, the people of Nevada will have a chance to take matters into their own hands by voting for the Background Check Initiative in 2016.”
Once the signatures are verified, the UBC measure will go before the state Legislature. The Legislature will then have 40 days to review it. Lawmakers can pass it, which would then send it to the governor’s desk. However, if they fail to vote on the measure or vote it down, it will then go on the 2016 ballot for voters to decide.
In 2013, Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed a UBC bill that was approved by the Legislature. But given that pro-gun Republicans have majorities in both chambers, it’s unlikely that lawmakers will pass this latest UBC measure. So, in all likelihood, voters in Nevada will make the call in 2016.
Just like in Washington state, there’s little doubt that Everytown will be dumping more of Bloomberg’s money into supporting this cause. According to Politico, the former New York City mayor spent $40 million on the midterm elections, supporting pro-gun control candidates and ballots nationwide.
Welcome to Washington State. Now I need to go through an FFL to trade any one of my legally owned guns for any one of my wife’s legally owned guns. Tell me that isn’t about registration and fees. Since we’re both legal gun owners, and both legally licensed to carry, would they (Bloomberg, Gates, Balmer) be willing to just give us a license to trade arms with other legally licensed persons, perhaps like a drivers license? If I’m licensed to carry why shouldn’t that include being licensed to acquiring arms. We don’t have to go through an FBI fingerprint & background check each time we decide to carry, our license is good for five years. But hell no, we’ve got to go through an FFL for a fee every time we buy, sell, trade, or otherwise exchange possession (defined as holding it or having access to it). And by our new law to repeat the process again if we decide to trade back. These “do-gooders” will eventually destroy some of everyone’s freedom unless we put a stop to it. This new law has gone way overboard, it will make criminals out of those that loan a gun to their spouse when target shooting. I believe it was their intent to sneak through legislation that was over the head of the common citizen. Most of those that voted yes on I-594 never heard of the trash that was in it to harass legal gun owners. It’s was written as bad as the Affordable Care Act.

Demos just passed this law in Washington. It is gun REGISTRATION in disguise. the untold plan is 50 years from now all unregistered firearms will be considered contraband since there is no transfer record and thus considered to be transferred illegally. The NRA provided little support for the opposition initiative. Out spent by the gun grabbers by 10 to 1.
These misguided folks don’t understand the laws. 1. All internet sales of firearms must be culminated through a federally licensed dealer. Ie; I look on any number of internet gun sales sites and find a gun that I want and agree to purchase it and send the seller a copy of a local dealer’s federal license, along with payment. The seller then sends the gun to my local dealer who runs the federal background check before allowing me to take the gun home. I can’t just buy a gun from an individual or dealer in N.H. & have him ship the gun direct to me here in TX. That would land us both in jail.
You decide to sell your car & put an ad in the local paper. Your next door neighbor, Joe is looking for a car for his daughter and sees the ad. He’s known you for years and knows how well you take care of your vehicles. Joe’s daughter likes the car. So Joe buys it & you sign over the title and give Joe the keys. There are more people killed by motor vehicles every day than are killed by guns. Is it your responsibility to run a drivers license check on Joe and his daughter to make sure they don’t have any tickets before sell them the car? Of course not. I and most gun owners would not knowingly sell a gun to a mentally ill person or convicted felon, which is also against the law.
Barry, I hear ya. However, everyday, law-abiding gun owners engage in private sales to people with ill intent or severe mental illness. Every sale, private or otherwise, should go through an FFL, and the buyer should submit to the NICS. I’m not fan of a ownership database, but I am the greatest advocate for a database of felons, stalkers, and the involuntarily committed.

(1) such database exists
(2) it is a crime to sell to convicted felons
(3) Excluding the movie “Minority Report,” it is usually hard to know if someone has an ill intent. I do not think someone goes to a gun show asking for a recommendation for a gun to rob a bank
(4) Criminals have better ways to get guns. For instance, if you are a current member (no expired card, please. They do check) of one of the Mexican Drug Cartel, the US government will gladly provide a fully auto weapon. Sometimes even free of charge. See “Fast and Furious” for details. Operators standing by!
(5) Thanks to current regulation, gun owners with *any* mental illness no matter how minor (say, woman with post partum (sp?) depression) are justifiably afraid of seeking help and, as a result lose their gun rights.

(3) Sarcasm not appreciated, but yes. I would add that a Universal Background Check for private sales will help to prevent more people of ill intent from procuring firearms easily. I understand a sizable amount steal them, but come on, let’s not make it easy for them with an unregulated private sale. Theft has a chance at being stopped.
(4) Yes, some politicians make horrible decisions sometimes. I hope nothing like F&F is repeated.
(5) Do you have a source for that? And if so, is that state/federal? If that is true, that is ridiculous, and I agree it is a problem. I think the Universal Background Check, in terms of what mental illness to red-flag, should only aim for the involuntarily committed.

Hey Al, comments like “everyday law abiding gun owners….” are nothing more than self serving unsubstantiated wishful thinking by gun grabbers. Everyday LAW ABIDING gun owners DON’T sell guns to people with ill intent or severe mental illness. If they do I would like documented proof with clear examples of where this has happened. Registration of guns is the first precurser to confiscation. Once the government knows who has the firearm and where they live it’s a short hop to sending out the troopers to take it away on a whim.
Nothing in the proposed Nevada statute would prevent a mentally deranged individual or felon from acquiring a firearm if they so desire. It would only hamper completely law abiding citizens from exercising their 2nd amendment right. The acquistion of firearms by the criminal class is done by theft of a weapon from someone who has legally purchased it or the break in of a firearms dealer or sporting goods store. Criminals don’t obey laws, that’s why they are callled CRIMINALS!!

-First, I’m not advocating for Firearm Registration. I think it’s unnecessary and potentially dangerous. I only stand by my support for Universal Background Check expansion to gun shows and private sales.
