New Zealand Gangs: ‘No,’ We Won’t Get Rid of Our Guns

2nd Amendment – R2KBA Authors S.H. Blannelberry This Week

When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.

This truism is on clear display in New Zealand where the leader of a notorious gang said publicly last week that he had no intention of complying with the nation’s proposed, large-scale gun ban.

“Will gangs get rid of their weapons? No. Because of who we are, we can’t guarantee our own safety,” explained Sonny Fatu, the leader of the Waikato branch of the Mongrel Mob, in an interview with Stuff.

“It’s not in our culture to inflict harm on innocent people like what happened in Christchurch,” he continued, referencing the massacre that left 50 people dead. “The attacks between our organizations are gang-on-gang, they do not involve the non-gang members.”

That said, Fatu acknowledged that sometimes there is collateral damage.

“Although there may be peripheral damage and violence that occasionally spills out into the public eye, it is absolutely and without intention for any harm to be caused to non-gang members,” he said.

The Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines, and Parts) Amendment Bill was overwhelmingly backed by the New Zealand Parliament Tuesday. Only 1 out of 120 members voted against the bill.

Per the legislation, there would be a general prohibition on importing, selling, supplying, or possessing any of the following:

  • a semi-automatic firearm (other than a pistol), with some exceptions:
  • a pump-action shotgun that is capable of being used with a detachable magazine:
  • a pump-action shotgun that has a non-detachable tubular magazine or magazines that can hold more than 5 cartridges or magazines:
  • magazines for shotguns that can hold more than 5 cartridges:
  • magazines for any other firearm that are detachable and can hold—0.22 calibre or less rimfire cartridges and more than 10 of those cartridges; or more than 10 cartridges and can be used with a semi-automatic or fully automatic firearm:
  • any other magazine that can hold more than 10 cartridges:
  • a part of a prohibited firearm, including a component, that can be applied to enable, or take significant steps towards enabling, a firearm to be fired with, or near, a semi-automatic action.

Penalties for violating the legislation range from 2 to 10 years in prison, depending on the offense. Merely possessing a banned firearm could land one in jail for five years, for example.

New Zealand Police Minister Stuart Nash had a message for Fatu and his ilk after learning about the gang president’s public defiance with respect to the bill.

“They are going to hand the guns back and if they don’t do it voluntarily, then the police are going to come after them,” said Nash according to Stuff.

Nash explained that the government is also considering expanding its police presence to target outlaws.

“Along with [Justice] Minister Andrew Little and the Crimes Act, we are looking at how we can increase the ability of the police or give police increased powers to go after these criminals,” he said.

“My advice to the gangs is hand your weapons back,” added Nash.

Citizens will have until Sept. 30, 2019, to give up their guns. The government does plan to appropriate an estimated $200 million ($135 million USD) to compensate those who comply with the confiscation scheme. Details on the “buy-back” are still being discussed.

“Owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right,” said Nash. “We need to remove the most dangerous weapons from our community.”

Similar to what happened in 1939, the moment the commie-pinko, chinese start bombing Darwin, (as was done), or assault troop transports near Auckland, these mashed-cats will be scream-pleading for American citizens to send them our firearms, and/or our finest to go fight for them. ..As the Brits took-out ads in US magazines, begging for American firearms. “Go dig-up, out of the mud, all those arms you destroyed, & buried;……maybe you can piece a few together, you fools! Don’t come crying to us! Go pound some of that surf and sand, that your are famous for Down Under! El Paladin

I have been following many New Zealand gun owner forums during this. They have no sense of guns being a right. No Constitution, no rights. Most don’t even argue, just roll over and lose everything.
The NZ government was very fast to use this crisis to screw over their own law abiding citizens. The shooter was Australian. At one point in the rampage he used a pump shotgun until it was empty.

  • Clint W. April 5, 2019, 2:14 pm

“Owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right,” said Nash. That’s New Zealand. That’s the way liberals and democrats think in this country. Keep making sure it does not become that way here.

  • DrThunder88 April 5, 2019, 1:15 pm

I am a bit shocked. Mostly because I assumed New Zealand already had most of those prohibitions.

  • John Boutwell April 5, 2019, 1:10 pm

Can knives, bats or autos be far behind with that level of shortsighted thinking?

  • AJ April 5, 2019, 12:11 pm

    RED FLAG:

Why the hell would police forces need additional powers to pursue the apprehension of criminals?

    Conclusion:

The ban is a ploy to gain control of the citizen(s). Providing police additional powers would allow an unofficial, though obvious, police state.

I foresee lots of dollar signs in smugglers eyes.
By the way, I still think she looks like AOC’s older sister.

  • C J April 5, 2019, 9:29 am

How is this even news? Some alleged journo asked the leader of a criminal organisation if the org was going to obey a new law and he said no. I’m surprised he would even answer. If it had been MS13, they would have cut out the journo’s tongue for even asking.

Hmmm, who are the bigger criminals, the gov. or the gangs? The impending firefights will tell the tale.

  • Godfrey Washington April 5, 2019, 7:57 am

So, wait… I’m supposed to trust the people who are attempting to disarm me for something I didn’t do? And if I don’t comply they will disarm me through force?!

Sounds like all the reason I need to stay armed…

  • Dr Motown April 5, 2019, 6:49 am

Sounds like some cops are going to get shot enforcing the Prime Minister\’s folly….

    • ~ Occams April 5, 2019, 11:13 am

Cops are like soldiers; ‘useless cattle’ (Kissinger), there only for policy enforcement.

Too bad cops and soldiers aren’t smart enough to figure the only laws or ‘freedom’ they’re defending is to serve the few Elites and their goals, wishes, and desires.

“We need to remove the most dangerous weapons from our community.”

It appears that the most dangerous weapon has already been removed … the human brain.

  • Erick April 4, 2019, 5:59 pm

From article: “‘Owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right,’ said Nash.”

Exchange the term “firearm” for any type of weapon (i.e. knife, sword, dagger, spear, chariot, shield, etc.) and every Tyrant the world has known has uttered a similar statement before; from the Pharaohs to the Ceasars, from Hitler to Stalin…it doesn’t end well for the common man.

    • T April 5, 2019, 1:58 pm

Driving is a privilege, and firearms ownership is a right.

Nice to live in the USA. Let these ignorant point to New Zealand…..I don’t believe they have an equal to the second amendment.

On a side note, observe the PM speaking eloquently, and observe socialist national health care single payer at work. Standing there breathing, and looks like poor dental health at a younger age – Your have to “PAY” for a dentist in single payer health care, that ain’t free.

  • Kenneth April 4, 2019, 4:44 pm

As American gun owners we should be standing with our New Zealand brothers and sisters who have been our allies and stood by our soldiers in battle and letting the world know this isn’t right, how long before the Kiwi government is killing innocent civilians to accomplish their tyrannical goals? Our government has put its nose everywhere else we should us our political and finicall power to good use and save freedom every where we can especially with our “allies”, freedom can be a fleeting thought that needs to be saved and cherished as much S possible. Gun control in any form, anywhere, is people control and a threat to us as a people and country.

  • Mark-in-Indy April 4, 2019, 3:05 pm

“…hand the guns back.” and “…hand your weapons back.” are parts of two very telling statements. “BACK”, I doubt that the firearms were “issued”. NZ calls its populace citizens, but it clearly considers them subjects.

  • Larry Myers April 4, 2019, 1:38 pm

” My right to keep and bear arms makes me a citizen. Without that right I am merely a subject.”

    • al April 5, 2019, 12:04 pm

And in fact, that is exactly what residents of Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. are. Subjects.

  • RayJN April 4, 2019, 12:17 pm

Who do these dangerous weapons threaten? Criminals and criminal politicians!

  • Zupglick April 4, 2019, 12:08 pm

  • CB April 4, 2019, 7:14 am

Thank goodness for 2A. More important thank goodness for the U.S. Constitution! “Owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right,” gave me chills when I read it, not just because of 2A, but because of the broader issue that politicians in New Zealand can make statements like that without fear, because NZ’s freedoms are not as strong or powerful as in the U.S.

Everyone needs to wake up and realize how much a lot of US politicians would LOVE to make statements like this for whatever agenda they are pushing, without worrying about having to walk it back later for fear of the backlash from free citizens!

Oh, and for the NZ police – I know they’ll never read this, but the head of what seems to be a powerful gang element in your country is not afraid to be named and give an interview and state that they will not give up their guns – and allow it to be put in print? That tells me they’re not afraid of you, and now you’re going to take away MORE defensive options from your law-abiding citizens?

And if an apparently well-spoken criminal isn’t giving up his weapon, then I suspect the next nutcase planning a mass shooting in NZ won’t either. I wish the citizens of NZ well and I’m praying for you. I am a full supporter of 2A but I also know there is no defense like God’s defense!

  • Vincent Brady April 4, 2019, 7:01 am

At no point in history has any government ever wanted its people to be defenseless for any good reason.

  • Phillip Ivey April 4, 2019, 6:30 am

What the prime minister and the minister of police are opening the door for alot of good police officers to be shot and some killed. These gangs are going to fight as there fighting a war with the police and i think some good citizens are going to join in the fight to there firearms!! This is just my opinion i know things are done differently down there but with my dealings with gangs all i can say is good luck to my brother’s and sister’s in blue !!

    • Jimbo April 5, 2019, 9:58 am

I doubt any “good” police officers will be shot while disarming citizens.

  • theguynextdoor April 4, 2019, 6:15 am

“Owning a firearm is a privilege, not a right,” said Nash. “We need to remove the most dangerous weapons from our community.”

Perhaps they should start with the politicians !
